Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

Ore from Henderson’s 7700 Southwest panel cave is transported between the production and truck haulage levels through a series of orepasses. A typical orepass complex consolidates dump points from four production drifts into two long bored raises feeding into a single truckloading chute. The system typically covers a vertical extent of 200 m and a lateral extent of 90 m. In the process of commissioning several initial orepass complexes, challenges with preferential draw in the long bored raises were observed. Preferential draw occurs when one long orepass mobilises much sooner and/or flows significantly faster than the other orepass. This has negative implications for orepass availability in the production drifts. As future mining at Henderson relies on the construction and use of such orepass systems, the development of appropriate design criteria and practical solutions to existing flow problems was necessary.A series of PFC3D numerical models were developed to assist in identifying the factors influencing preferential draw and possible corrective measures. The models helped to identify two primary factors that caused the preferential effect: the relative elevation of the brow at the bottom of each long bored raise, and the location of the bin used to funnel fragmented rock from both raises into the chute. This paper covers the initial design of the orepass complexes at Henderson, results of the numerical models, mitigation work done to date on existing orepass complexes, and design criteria for future construction.CITATION:Gresham, J and Turichshev, A, 2016. Although mining companies have made broad corporate-level commitments to adopt sustainability, there continue to be problems when attempts are made to adopt higher-level sustainability aspirations and translate them into appropriate targets and methods at the more-specific operational level. The integration of sustainability principles into minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies, yet impacts from operational decisions can have longer-term effects realised at closure and rehabilitation.This paper describes a proposed methodology to achieve the integration of sustainability at the operational level through a systematic and rigorous process of identifying and qualifying sustainability issues and opportunities in an operation. The methodology, starting from a sustainability point of view rather than an operational one, guides the identification of process issues and opportunities by examining the operation, unit-by-unit, similar to a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) process. Each issue or opportunity is qualified according to its measurability, scopes of impact and consequences so that it may be understood fully and the correct engineering problems are formed. Through improved decision-making to account for broader sustainability factors, operations can better address environmental and social expectations and pressures (both corporate and community, as well as immediate and in the longer-term), whilst still delivering on operational and business goals.The methodology has been tested with two case studies at minerals processing operations. At one site, the methodology identified a dust issue which had considerable business risks (loss of valuable product) compared to conventional engineering analysis processes. The other site also benefited from using the methodology as an opportunity to improve the operation of the milling and flotation circuits was identified. The opportunity not only showed a potential to improve operational efficiency, but also potential improvements in water and energy efficiency and a resulting increased resilience against water and energy supply risks. It was important to utilise the holistic approach of the methodology in the identification of opportunities at this site; the goals of the operation showed a strong coupling between water and energy issues which would be difficult to overcome using the operationÆs current organisational model, which deals with such issues separately of each other.CITATION:Tuazon, D, Corder, G D, Powell, M and Ziemski, M, 2012. In the Mesel sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit, the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration is controlled by steeply dipping faults and shallowly dipping lithologies. Hydrothermal alteration of carbonate rock is characterised by decalcification, dolomitisation and silicification. Intense argillic alteration occurs in a laccolithic andesite intrusion adjacent to decalcified and silicified carbonate units. Sulphide minerals (pyrite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite and cinnabar) accompany hydrothermal alteration and precious metal mineralisation. The trace elements Ag, As, Sb and Hg are zoned spatially throughout the deposit. Mesel contains a mineable gold reserve of 7.8 million tonnes at 7.3 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is preferentially localised in carbonate rocks adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion. The ore body consists of a central, near-vertical, high grade 'feeder' system flanked by tabular, inward dipping, moderate grade 'ouflow' zones. Mineralisation is controlled predominantly by two steeply dipping faults with high grade (=10 g/t) gold zones centred about structural intersections and fault splays. Gold is submicron size and locked in very fine grained (<10 microns), disseminated and fracture-controlled arsenical pyrite. The Mesel deposit developed where high angle faults guided ascending, sulphidising fluids into reactive carbonate stratigraphy adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion and during subsequent migration of the auriferous fluids along 'outflow' channels. Early decalcification and dolomitisation enhanced porosity and permeability prior to silicification and sulphidation. Gold deposition occurred late in the genesis of the deposit.

Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870s-early 1880s, shortly after the initial discovery of mineralisation at what is now the Martha Mine. Indeed, early recovery problems associated with the Martha mineralisation led to the preferred development of ore bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, and Union to name a few. Gladstone Hill forms the basis of the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture managed by Au-Ag Resources Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd), and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Mine. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Mine, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with a number of vein sets throughout the tenement including the Gladstone Vein set, the Moonlight Lode and more recently along a north-easterly trend towards the historic Favona workings. A wide range of vein styles is apparent, ranging in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz and have been interpreted as representing multiple phases of emplacement. At shallower levels mineralisation is often hosted by vein clasts within vent breccias. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. Percentage levels of combined sphalerite-galena-(+/- chalcopyrite) have been intersected at depth however these have been gold poor to date. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area remains to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.

Good morning and thanks for the chance to talk to you. It's really pleasing to see so many industry representatives here I want to spend a few minutes talking about issues relating to your industry. At the end of today I would like to leave you with three strong messages from government. The first is that this government supports environmentally responsible mining and the endeavours of the mining industry. The second is that explorers and developers are wanted and welcomed in New Zealand. And the last is that it is up to the industry to keep the public properly informed about how your industry and to constantly work on improving your public image. The mining industry is a high-tech industry which fits snugly with our concept of a growing knowledge-based economy. It has particular value for regional development, the gold mining industry alone provides more than 4,000 jobs û mostly outside of the main cities. The industrial minerals industry is twice as large as that. As well as those people directly employed by the industry there are greater downstream effects for the community. One example from the broader extraction industry of this is of the local pie shop down the road from one of Taranaki's petroleum industry locations. The shop sells over $4,000 worth of pies a week to workers in the industry. That's just one example of the positive benefits the industry brings to its local community and is the sort of real positive benefit you need to be telling people about

The emission of seam gases into underground workings in coal mines is acknowledged as a major hazard, particularly methane due to its possible ignition. Acknowledge of seam gas parameters is important for the prediction of gas emission rates into the ventilating air current. They are also important as the basis for the evaluation of the likely contained gas as a possible energy source.   Gas content determinations for the Kupakupa seam have been made at the Huntly West Mine.  Applying the method of Creedy (1986) to face samples, gas contents of 1.80 and 1.66 have been determined. Using desorbed and residual gas content data a content of 1.92 m3/t has been derived. These are on an ash included basis. Calculations using the adsorption equation of Kim (1977) and coal quality have given a gas content of 2.19 m3 t. Long-hole exploration drilling at Huntly West Mine has provided information on gas pressure. A pressure rise test has given a reading of 500 kPa (absolute); this is low compared with the pressure given for the determined gas content from theoretical adsorption isotherms.

Changes in feed size distribution can have significant effects in rod mill grinding. The product sizing resulting from wet batch milling of a tin ore showed little influence on fines production after truncating the feed at either the coarse or fine end. The addition of fine material caused a less amount of fines to be produced and a possible increase in grinding at coarse sizes, although this is complicated by the changing feed size distribution. The changes in feed size distribution caused no tendency for preferential grinding of the cassiterite.

It is now becoming mandatory in Australia to rehabilitate ponded fine grained coal mine tailings, which may well have been deposited initially with no consideration as to how or whether this could be done nor to the costsinvolved. Of prime importance to the rehabilitation of tailings ponds are the bearing capacity and deformation characteristics of the tailings. Since the tailings are fine grained, time effects will govern the self-weightdeformation of the tailings initially deposited as a slurry and the subsequent deformation of the deposit under the weight imposed by rehabilitation fill. The engineering properties of a particular deposit of ponded tailings havebeen investigated and its response to the placement of fill monitored and analysed.

Sulphur-rich minerals such as authigenic pyrite (FeS2) are commonly associated with coal mine workings. Metallic elements such as arsenic (As), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are enriched in the pyrite relative to their concentrations in the surrounding environment. Exposure of pyrite and coal to air and water results in a series of oxidation and hydrolysis reactions that are commonly catalysed by species of Thiobacillus bacteria. These reactions lead to a lowering of the pH in the drainage waters (acid mine drainage, AMD) and subsequent mobilisation of trace metals in environmentally significant concentrations. This study assesses the spatial distribution of As, Zn and Cu concentration in water in relation to pH and Eh (redox potential) downstream from the tailings at the Wangaloa opencast lignite mine in southeast Otago. This mine was abandoned in the late 1980s due to a decrease in the economic viability of mining the lignite. The area is showing the characteristic symptoms of AMD, which is detrimental to the health of several Pinus radiate growing on some of the tailings. The pH of the drainage waters can get as low as 2, and in some instances, lower, but it returns to near neutral (pH 6.5) up to 200 metres down stream from the base of mine waste piles. It is well documented that the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is catalysed microbially, causing a substantial decrease in the pH of the drainage waters. Acidification is then counteracted predominantly by natural abiotic remediation processes occurring downstream.

Northparkes Mines is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Sumitomo group and is operated by Rio Tinto to produce copper concentrate from ore sourced from open cut and underground. Underground ore is mined with an owner operator workforce using the block cave method from the E26 deposit, with the first lift of the cave now completed. Development of the Lift 2 block cave commenced in March 2001 using a contract workforce. The Lift 2 Project required the mining of 14 700 m of decline and lateral development to establish a new mining horizon at the 9450 level and to develop two new conveyor declines. Also included in the scope was the excavation of a Crusher chamber to house the jaw-gyratory crusher. This paper describes the excavation of the hydroset chamber and orepass that sit immediately underneath the Lift 2 Crusher chamber. It includes risk assessment, planning, development of method statements and standard operating procedures, through to the excavation of the orepass and the installation of ground support in seismically active ground. There was a major ground failure in the backs of the conveyor feeder chamber during its excavation, which affected the excavation of the orepass due to its proximity to the breakthrough site.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. Poor standards of electrical installation and maintenance continue to contribute to electrical related fatalities and injury risk in the mining industry. Electrical isolation has the potential to initiate major unwanted events (MUEs) and as such requires thorough analysis to demonstrate adequate management. There have been 719 incidents related to accidental contact with electricity over the past five years in the Queensland mining industry (Queensland Government DME, 2012a, 2012b) with the last fatality being recorded in 1997 (MESA, 2012).A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has developed a form of a safety case using the four-layered æCoal Mine Safety Regime (CMSR)Æ approach. The CMSR is transparent and robust as it includes full site risk assessment and special issues risk assessment to be demonstrated as part of the process.The practical application of the CMSR has been demonstrated using a longwall mining case study site, where a unique 11 kV armoured face conveyor (AFC) is in operation. The case study has involved progressive application of the requirements of each layer of the CMSR (see Figure 1) to high voltage (HV) electrical isolation related issues. The project has specifically concentrated on understanding and analysing two high priority MUEs, electric shock and unplanned movement of equipment, through Layer 1 analysis. These two MUEs are an important part of the project as they have demonstrated the steps that may be taken to satisfy the risk management processes at Layer 1 of the CMSR and have contributed to resolving issues at the other three layers of the CMSR.The analysis of HV electrical isolation has been used as an exemplar to demonstrate the CMSR process and its practical application. The CMSR is applicable to major/principal hazards management as identified by the New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.This paper provides an overview of the development of a form of safety case using the CMSR and introduces the case study application for HV electrical isolation risk management at underground coal mines focusing on the major unwanted event of electric shock.This project provides the mining industry with a documented, publicly accessible, form of safety case using the CMSR approach for the first time.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Griffiths, D, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garcés, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Meléndez, M, 2016. TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. A 1600 L/s pumping system will manage drainage from the mine.Other key facilities include separate shops for rail and rubber-tired equipment, warehousing, a powder magazine, a main control centre and an underground concrete batch plant.CITATION:Brannon, C A, Firdausi, H H, Pascoe, N D and Yuniar, A T, 2016. The Julius Kruttschnitt semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill model was developed by Leung in the 1980s and extensively updated to the variable rates model by Morrell and Morrison in 1996. Since then only minor upgrades have been incorporated in the version distributed in the JKSimMet simulator. A number of improvements, developed over the course of the AMIRA P9 project and in recent independent work, have now been incorporated. These improvements are based on a power-based model that directly relates the degree of breakage with energy consumption. The new size-dependent breakage function has been incorporated. The upgrades include more accurate predictions for a wide range of mill fillings (ten - 40 per cent), slurry hold-up in the mill, pebble discharge rate and the influence of changes in feed size and ball load.The paper presents the status of progress in the model development. An important consideration in any mining operation is waste disposal management. Tailings management at Macraes gold mine allows for the disposal of tailings into fully engineered embankment dams and overburden material to be incorporated as construction material into those embankment dams. This paper outlines the current tailings management practices.
