microscopic ohservations on alloys of organic trzaterials show that dendrite arms can melt off under normal conditiorzs of growth. This occurs because of the interactiorz of' heat and matter fluxes during dendritic growth. The re melting occurs where the den-drite arms are joined onto the main deizclrite sterrz. Many detached crystals can be produced in this fashion. It is postulated that this remelting phenornenon occurs in metal alloys, giving rise to the equi-axed region in castings. Experiments peyformed orr castings of transparent materials support remelting as a primary source of detached crystals. Ob~ervations an equiaxed tones in metal castings are discussed in terms of this and other mechanisms. It is concluded that the partial remelting of dendrites is on important mechanisnl for producing the equiaxed regions in castings. THE freezing of a casting can be divided into three regions: a chill zone formed near the mold wall, a columnar region, and a third region, at the center of the casting, which is called the equiaxed zone. The origin of the grains that comprise the equiaxed region is the subject of this paper. We will first outline the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the origin of the equiaxed region and discuss some recent experiments which cannot be explained by these theories. We will then present some microscopic observations of dendritic growth which have led us to conclude that the equiaxed zone in castings can arise from partial remelting of dendrites. This proposal is supported by observations on transparent castings. Finally, we will discuss several observations on metal castings which could not be explained previously, and which can be accounted for by the present proposal. Previous Mechanisms. Winegard and Chalmers3 pointed out that the molten central region of an ingot could be constitutionally supercooled, because of the solute layer at the growing interface. In this supercooled region, nucleation on particles could occur, giving rise to the equiaxed crystals. Another mechanism has also been suggested,4y5 that the nuclei originate in the chill zone then float or are carried by convection to the center of the casting, where they grow to produce equiaxed crystals. In this case, all the crystals nucleate immediately on casting, so this mechanism will be termed "big-bang" nucleation. Walker's Experiments. J. L. Walker has made observations on the solidification of nickel and Ni-Cu alloys which cannot be accounted for by either of the above mechanisms. In studying the grain size resulting from freezing of nickel at various undercoolings, walker6 found that at large undercoolings the grain size was small, due to mechanical nucleation, as discussed by walker7 and Horvay.' At small undercoolings, the grain size was large, and the growth dendritic. In Ni-Cu alloys, however, for initial undercoolings starting from just below the melting point and extending for a hundred or so degrees of undercooling, fine grains were also observed. Samples were undercooled 200 Centigrade degrees without nucleating, and were then heated 130 Centigrade degrees so that the undercooling was 70 Centigrade degrees, and nucleated. The samples had a small grain size, indicating multiple nucleation. There were no heterogeneous nuclei in the liquid which could operate at the temperature of growth. Constitutional supercooling could not have been greater than the supercooling of the initial melt, since the temperature rose as the freezing continued. walker -as also shown that a Ni-Cu alloy which can be undercooled to below its solidus will produce typical columnar and equiaxed regions when cast into a cold mold. This alloy could not reach a temperature below its solidus by constitutional supercooling. It could not, therefore, have nucleated heterogeneously. IT is now just a quarter of a century since Fred W. Taylor§(23) pub-lished his classical paper On the Art of Cutting Metals, describing -his researches in which he, in cooperation with Maunsel White, had developed what is essentially the modern method of heat-treating high-speed steels. Regarding this research, Dr. Sauveur, (22) in his address on Steel Wizards, Past and Present, at the annual banquet of the American Society for Steel Treating in Philadelphia in 1920 said, "The discovery of high-speed steel, or if you prefer, of the treatment imparting high-speed properties to certain steels by Taylor and Maunsel White I am inclined to consider as our one epoch-making contribution to the metallurgy of steel." It was at about that same time (1900) that Taylor exhibited high-speed steels, heat-treated by the improved process, at the World's Exposition in Paris and attracted much attention by showing that the steels would operate at such feeds and speeds that the tips of the tools were visibly red hot. This observation must have started metallurgists to wondering regarding the relative hardness of the various steels at red-heat temperatures. Considerable work has indeed been done in an effort to measure the hardness of high-speed steels and. related materials in the red-heat range, using various methods. . The results, however, have been only partly satisfactory, owing to experimental difficulties. The present investigation had as its immediate inception an address by J. V. Emmons, of the Cleveland Twist Drill Co., to the Columbus Chapter of the American Society for Steel Treating in 1931, in which he deplored the fact that comparatively little was known with regard to the hardness of high-speed steels at elevated temperatures, in spite

SINCE the observations of Heyn,1 relative to the embrittlement of copper after having been heated in hydrogen, this subject has received considerable attention from later investigators. The published works of Archbutt2 and of Bengough and Hill3 give the reasons for this embrittlement-the formation of steam by the reaction between cuprous oxide and hydrogen. From Ruder,4 Pilling,5 Moore and Beckinsdale,6 Bassett and Bradley,7 and from Smith8 can be obtained quantitative data concerning the action of hydrogen and other reducing gases on copper samples having various oxygen contents. This problem has been discussed from a practical standpoint by Fuller9 who calls attention to some of the instances of this embrittlement encountered in the manufacturing field. The examples he cites may be considered typical cases of copper embrittlement which were incident to the process of manufacture. In many cases, such difficulties are overcome by changes in the manufacturing process.

INTRODUCTION Data available on prophyry copper occurrences in the Andean, Caribbean, Appalachian, and Cordilleran orogens may be categorized in a manner to suggest a hypothetical evolution for deposits that occur in the western hemisphere. A classification of de- posits is also suggested. A classification dependent on internal structure of a porphyry copper deposit would lead to two broad categories, breccia pipe and stockwork models. A classification of this type is examined herein but it is not universally accepted in the literature. Modeling based on igneous petrography as well as metasomatism attendant with the sulfide mineralization is more widely accepted by economic geologists whose evaluation of porphyry systems is influenced by the presence or absence of a phyllic zone. Lowell and Guilbert model deposits ordinarily include a phyllic zone, whereas those of the diorite model do not. Position of the phyllic zone in the alteration sequence is a significant ore guide. Should the phyllic zone be absent, dependence on alteration zoning to identify metallization is weakened. Presence or absence of the phyllic zone therefore is a significant parameter in the economic evaluation of a porphyry copper deposit (Hollister. et al., 1975). The Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model commonly includes a phyllic zone in quartz- bearing rocks. Parameters of both calc-alkalic and the quartz monzonite models mentioned elsewhere in this volume are sufficiently close to the Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model that it should be expanded to encompass them. The diorite model remains separate and distinct because deposits of this type are characterized by an absence of quartz in the pluton, commonly highly gold: copper ratios, low molybdenum content, and regular absence of sericite in the alteration zones. A new technique facilitating the rapid determination of the three-dimensional morphology of phases suspended in an opaque matrix is described. The vapidity of the technique is based upon continuous cinephotomicrographic recording of specimen microstructure as the specimen surface is removed under controlled conditions in an electrolytic cell. The advantages of the technique for determining spatial morphologies in opaque materials are illustrated by application of this method to the study of the configuration of faults in a specimen of directionally solidified CuAl2-Al eutectic alloy. A spatial model of the eutectic fault network deduced in this manner has substantiated the facts that faults in this alloy tend to lie parallel to one another in a direction close to that of the specimen growth axis and that the majority of faults tend to bridge lamellae rather than run parallel to them as growth proceeds. For the specimen studied fault density decreased as growth proceeded. ALTHOUGH metallographic observation is a powerful tool for investigating the correlation between structure and properties in metallic alloys, ordinary metallographic methods suffer the fundamental limitation that any conclusions concerning the three-dimensional structure of these opaque materials must rely upon inference from two-dimensional microsections. For this reason it is frequently impossible to make valid judgments regarding the true spatial distribution of the micro-constituents in specimens under investigation. Several techniques have been devised to circumvent the basic limitation of planar microsec-tioning and employed with varying success. These include construction of three-dimensional models of alloy microstructure from sequences of photomicrographs,1-3 quantitative deduction of spatial features based upon statistical studies of data from random and/or selected plane microsections,4-6 and selective dissolution of one phase in a two-phase alloy to reveal the topography of the phase remaining.' However these techniques also have certain obvious disadvantages. Construction of three-dimensional models is a very time-con- suming procedure due to the tedious polish-etch-photograph cycle needed to obtain the necessary photomicrographs to portray the spatial microstructure. Statistical methods by their very nature give only average values of the quantities being studied and cannot therefore give a detailed physical picture of the microstructure to be observed. Finally, the technique of selective dissolution is only applicable in systems where the phases are of vastly different chemical reactivity; it is of little use in the study of single-phase alloys. Since the determination of the three-dimensional structure of opaque materials is hindered by two facts—the materials are opaque to radiation in the visible spectrum and construction of spatial models of microstructure is quite laborious—two solutions to the problem suggest themselves: 1) use radiation of energy great enough to render the alloy transparent, i.e., some microradio-graphic method, or, 2) devise a rapid means to section and record alloy microstructure. Stereomicroradiography has indeed been used to study internal arrangements of phases in several materials8,9 but the method, in general, is limited to very thin specimens (due to X-ray absorption) and simple microstructures. It would seem then that development of a rapid, simple, and generally applicable technique for studying the details of alloy microstructures in three dimensions can best be undertaken by following the second approach above. Using this idea a new technique for rapid evaluation of spatial microstructures was developed based upon cinephotomicrographic recording of the micro-structure of a specimen undergoing controlled electrolytic dissolution. It was further felt that application of this technique to the careful study of the spatial configuration of faults in a CuAl2-Al eutectic alloy would yield information that could be correlated with the extensive data3,6,10-12 already compiled concerning the solidification and crystallography of this eutectic. The practicality and usefulness of similar methods for studying three-dimensional features in alloys has recently been illustrated by the study of dislocation loops in zinc13 and spheroidized structure in steel.14

Nationalization of the coal mining industry in Great Britain was one of the first pieces of major legislation enacted by the post-war Labor Government in 1964. It followed a long period of economic depression with high unemployment and bad industrial relations in the coal mining industry during the 1930's, and shortages of coal during the last war. Upon nationalization, the National Coal Board took over control of the industry in 1947 and so became the biggest single employer of labor in the western world. As well as the coal mines themselves, it assumed responsibility for a great variety of other assets including coke ovens, byproduct plants, land, houses, railways and shipping wharves.

Mineral raw materials, because they are essential to our industrial prosperity and military strength, must be made available in substantial quantities. regardless of cost. Variations in the cost of procuring minerals, as compared with the cost of obtaining other commodities, and changes in the cost of production of different minerals relative to one another, will naturally influence the quantities of a given mineral item that can be marketed readily. However, in the last analysis, the cost of winning minerals from the ground usually constitutes only a small fraction of the value of the end-use products and services derived from them. The miner's share of the cost of a typewriter, telephone circuit, or even a modem office building, is almost insignificant. Far more important to the ultimate consumer, therefore, than any minor saving in cost is the assurance of ample supplies of the minerals needed to aliment our expanding economy. To create a successful metal mining operation involves ( 1 ) the discovery and systematic development of a mineral deposit, (2) extraction of the ore, (3) the mechanical and metallurgical processing to eliminate worth- less or harmful impurities, and (4) the profitable disposal of the product. The first step of the technological process belongs chiefly in the realm of the geologist, the second is a mining engineer's job, the third is mainly up to the millmen and extractive metallurgists; whereas the fourth and equally important step poses a commercial problem that has aspects in common with the marketing of other products. Ore finding is far from being an exact science. There is no mathematical criterion for evaluating the efficiency of prospecting and exploration. Lady Luck shares the honors or assumes part of the blame along with the prospector and geologist. Marketing like- wise involves factors that seemingly defy engineering analysis. HIS investigation originated as a result of a pre-vious experimental study' of the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloys fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique. Densities of powder compacts prepared for the magnetics investigation varied from 7.45 to 7.70 g per cu cm or from 93 to 95 pct of the experimental value of 8.08 g per cu cm for a fused alloy of the same composition.' While this range of density is considered sufficiently high for most applications, the highest possible density is to be desired for maximum magnetic properties. By applying a technique similar to the one described above to a pure electrolytic iron powder, Rostoker³ was able to achieve a density of 7.895 g per cu cm, which is the highest density ever reported for sintered iron. While Rostoker's work involved the sintering of an elemental powder rather than a mixture, it was believed that higher densities should also have been obtained for alloys using the above technique because of the recoining operation and the high sintering temperature. Consequently, it was decided to investigate the various factors affecting the density of this alloy with the idea that such a study might lead to higher densities and, as a result, powder alloys having magnetic properties identical with those of the fused alloys. It was believed that the principal reason that near-theoretical densities for the powdered alloy were not obtained was the interference of gases with the normal sintering mechanism. When present during the sintering operation, gases can exert several harmful effects: they can remain on the particle surface and interfere with surface diffusion and plastic flow; they can be released and, under certain conditions, expand the void spaces through gas pressure; or they can remain trapped in the pores and exert a hydrostatic pressure that retards elimination of the pores. Jones,4 Rhines,5 Goetzel," and others have given the effect of gases in the sintering of powder compacts an extensive treatment. Among the more important sources of gases in the sintering process are dissolved gases, adsorbed gases, air entrapped during pressing, and gaseous products of chemical reactions. During sintering adsorbed gases are partly released at a relatively low temperature, while those gases entrapped during pressing cannot escape until their pressure is increased sufficiently through increasing temperature to expand the interpartjcle openings. The remaining adsorbed gases, gaseous reduction products, and dissolved gases produce a similar effect at the higher temperatures. If, in the sintering process, gas evolution occurs after the interpore channels have been sealed, an exaggerated expansion of the void spaces results. This is particularly true if the temperature is high enough for extensive plastic flow. In his fabrication of powder bars from tantalum, Balke7 had to consider the effect of adsorbed hydrogen and provide for its escape during sintering by limiting the compacting pressure to a maximum of 50 tons per sq in. The effect of gases entrapped during pressing was first noted by Trzebiatowski8 when he found that gold and silver powders decrease in density with increasing sintering temperature if pressed at 200 tsi, while they exhibit the usual increase when pressed at 40 tsi. Recent investigators9-11 have also noted that entrapped gases have an effect on the expansion of copper compacts during sintering. Proper provision for the escape of gaseous products of reduction must be made in order to avoid deleterious effects. Myers" states that in the sintering of electrolytic tantalum powder, the temperature was gradually raised to 2600°F with a pause at 2000°F to permit reduction of the oxides. Experimental Details For the present study, 50 pct Co-50 pct Fe compacts in the form of circular disks 1½ in. in diam and 0.15 in. thick were fabricated by the pressing and sintering of a mixture of the elemental powders. It was decided to follow the sintering process by means of liquid permeability measurements, because it was thought that such measurements might serve as a measure of relative pore sizes, as well as a possible indication of the point at which most of the interpore channels become sealed. However, since the permeability as measured by the flow of a liquid, such as ethylene glycol, does not give an absolute indication of the point where the pores have become isolated, a method for determining the percentage of pores connected to the surface was set up. As an additional cross check on the permeability measurements, metallographic methods were used to study the relative pore size. Finally, the property of ultimate interest, the density, was measured. Raw Materials: The powders used consisted of an annealed, 99.9 pct pure, —150 mesh grade of electrolytic iron powder, and a 98 pct pure, —200 mesh grade of reduced and comminuted cobalt powder. The cobalt powder was not further processed either by hydrogen reduction or annealing. The screen analyses for the iron and cobalt powders are given in Table I, while the chemical analyses for each type of powder are listed in Table 11. Table 111 gives the hydrogen loss measurements for the powders according to the M.P.A. Standard Method and for a higher temperature as well. He also represents the Coal Division, in which industry lie has actively participated- for nearly twenty years. Dr. Young was horn in Topeka, Kan., Oct. 1, 1873, received mining degrees from Penn State and ,-Iowa. State, and a Ph.D., from Illinois. The first part of his professional life was spent in teaching first as instructor in mining at Iowa State, second .as professor of mining at the Colorado School' of Mines, third as director of the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Mo., and finally he taught business

FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,400. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service. "It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. INTRODUCTION Comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages; exceptions being when a final product such as aggregates, specification sand, Portland Cement, and similar products is produced. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding -- primary and secondary), natural or manufactured non-metallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media -- steel rods, steel or iron balls. This chapter will discuss general mill design and the specific design and application of the following types of tumbling grinding mills. Liners The interior surface of grinding mills exposed to grinding media and/or the material being ground are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic, a combination of rubber and metallic, or non-metallic wear resistant materials. B. Drives Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simplest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinion-shaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling.

THE time-honored description of the growth of metal crystals to form polycrystalline aggregates is one in which two important steps are con-sidered: (1) nucleation, and (2) dendritic growth, each dendrite starting from its individual nucleus and resulting (upon slow cooling, assuming no solid phase changes) in a macrograin. This picture of the process of crystallization is incomplete, and it is with the hope of enlarging upon it that the following summary and correlation of experimental results are given. MOSAIC STRUCTURE For an exact definition of the mosaic structure of metal crystals-if, indeed, one can be found that will hold for all metals-one must await the results of much experimental work in this field. The writer's investiga-tions have been confined almost entirely to copper and a few of its alloys. The following terms are proposed, and will be used in this report: Macromosaic Structure l.-Large-scale mosaic structure; more specif-ically, mosaic structure of a scale large enough to produce splitting of Laue spots on back-reflection Laue X-ray patterns2. The thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutions of copper, silver, and gold in liquid tin is not explained by current solution theories.1-3 The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpies, or heats of solution, of silver, gold, and platinum in liquid lead at 623°K have been measured in the investigation reported here. Their interpretation requires a modification of the regular-solution theory although lead-rich solutions may be expected to be simpler than tin-rich solutions. The liquid metal solution calorimeter used has been described.4 At the start of a run the bath consisted of 621 g of reagent-grade lead. Several calibrating additions of lead were made during a run; a value of 3.48 kcal per g-atom5 was taken for H623°K - H273°K Two runs were made with each of the solutes silver, gold, and platinum. Annealed wire samples of 99.999+ pct purity were used. Four to six samples each weighing 0.5 to 1,0 g were added from 273°K to the bath at 623°K and the associated heat effects were measured. The samples dissolved in approximately 3 min. No serious experimental difficulties were encountered. The heat effects of the additions in a run plotted against the average atom fraction of solute before and after each addition314 were linear functions of the concentration in lead of silver, gold, and platinum, respectively. By subtracting the difference between the heat contents of a solute element at 623° and. 273°K5 from the measuredheat effects, the partial gram-atomic enthalpy relative to the solid solute was obtained. The relativ: partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution and the concentration dependence of the partial gram-atomic enthalpies obtained from the plots of vs atomic fraction x are listed in Table I. The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of silver in lead of 5.46 kcal per g-atom at 623°K compares with values at 723°K of 5.74' and 5.765 kcal per g-atom. These data yield a temperature coefficient of 3.0 cal per g-atom-OK. The partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of gold in lead at 623°K is 0.89 kcal per g-atom compared with 0.85 kcal per g-atoms (obtained by extrapolation) and 0.95 kcal per g-atom.5 By combining these values for 623°K with those for several other temperatures5" the temperature coefficient of was found to be 3.2 cal per g-atom-OK. IN previous studies on the effect of orientation on the rate of anodic oxidation of A1-3 pct Mg mono-crystals of high purity, certain anomalies were observed on the cold-worked metal. These anomalies were shown to correspond to regions of changed orientation within the grains resulting from plastic deformation.' In fact, they are deformation bands revealed by differences in rate of oxidation and produced by more or less continuous bending of the lattice about a [Ill] axis common to the original crystal and the band.2,3 Preliminary observations made after relatively large degrees of cold working revealed an approximate twin relationship between the bands and the surrounding crystal. Fig. 1 shows the etch figures formed on such a band and on the original monocrystal after a 67 pct rolling reduction. It is evidently not a true twinning, since there is a broad transition zone between the two systems, however the two extreme orientations are nearly in a twin relationship. It was decided to investigate these preliminary observations by progressive rolling-reductions on monocrystals of varied initial orientation. From these studies, which form the subject of the present article, it became apparent that the initial observation of an approximate twin relation between the bands and the monocrystal was simply a special case. Our experiments show that deformation in rolling proceeds by a mechanism analogous to those which have already been observed in the simpler cases of tension and compression. Micrography—in particular, the formation of etch figures—has been applied to the quantitative study of these orientations. In addition, observations have been made of slip lines, of thin oxide films yielding interference colors, of thick films in polarized light, and of etchants giving "engraving." These micrographic methods for studying orientation have established the orientation relationship without any ambiguity, whereas X-ray methods would have given only a statistical result because we were often dealing with thin bands (2 to 100 microns) and even narrower connecting zones covering a maximum of 20 microns. Specimen Preparation and Methods The Al-3 pct Mg alloy was prepared from 99.95 pct A1 and is of the type used industrially in France for brilliant anodized finishes under the name of Brillalumag. This material combines the normal commercial properties with an enduring brilliance due to the protection of a thick, but perfectly transparent, film of alumina.' The monocrystals were prepared by the method of critical deformation followed by prolonged annealing. Great care was taken to insure perfect homogeneity of composition, to eliminate included crystals,6,7 and to avoid the formation of undulations during oxidation. The critical deformation for this alloy is about 1.2 pct (1-l0/10x100) and the subsequent annealing was for one week at 500 °C after gradual increase of temperature (35°C per hr). The crystals thus prepared had a section of 10x5 mm and a length of 20 to 40 mm. Each of these crystals was polished electrolytically and etched for the formation of etch-figures with the classical reagent.' The orientation was then calculated from their angles, as measured with a goniometer microscope.

The centrifuge has been found to be an extremely useful tool for determining capillary pressure curves and for establishing connate water and residual oil in small core plugs. The use of the centrifuge for determining the properties of small core plugs has been discussed in the literature,',' but practically no experimental evidence has been presented justifying the use of this method in preference to other methods (mainly disc method) now in use. Data have been accumulated and are now presented demonstrating the advantages of the centrifugal method, some of which are: (1) rapid establishment of equilibrium, (2) excellent precision yielding very reproducible results, (3) availability of high pressure differences between phases, (4) simple operational procedure, and (5) ability to establish connate water, residual oil, or to obtain complete capillary pressure curve in one day or less. A commercially available centrifuge capable of speeds up to 3,800 rpm, and a high speed attachment providing a maximum rate of rotation of 18,000 rpm were used in this work in conjunction with core holding tubes designed specifically for this application. In view of the outstanding advantages associated with the use of the centrifuge the conclusion has been drawn that this method should be used in place of the more tedious, slower, and less reliable disc method for determining capillary pressure curves and for establishing connate water and residual oil in small core plugs. Several investigators1,2 have used centrifugal forces to develop pressure differences between phases. As a result of the first work' in this field the conclusion was reached that "the more rapid centrifugal method for measuring irreducible saturation may have equal value, (compared to use of discs) but more work is required to establish this point." This work was followed in 1945 by a more detailed study2 in which the concepts of this experimental work were more clearly enunciated. A method for calculating saturation for any given speed of rotation based on the observed volume of water displaced was developed and a wider application of the method was suggested. The absence of any subsequent pertinent literature on this subject is interpreted as indicating that no additional work has been completed to substantiate or deny the earlier claims and suggestions of promise contained in the original papers on this subject. One purpose of this report is to provide evidence designed to establish the practical value of centrifugal methods in determining core properties such as connate water and capillary pressure curves. It is also our purpose to suggest a broadening of the scope of this tool to include determinations of residual oil by gas or water drives. BEFORE direct or wet smelting of copper concentrate was adopted at the McGill smelter, in November 1932, actual furnace smelting tests had indicated the possibility of smelting between 400 and 500 dry tons of wet concentrate per furnace day. Under calcine smelting practice, solid charge up to 1165 tons per furnace day had been smelted. It was realized that in order to smelt wet tonnage in equivalent amount per furnace day, a higher combustion rate and higher temperatures would be neces-sary within the furnace. The reverberatory furnace considered in the following history of wet-smelting de-velopments is a unit 127 ft. long and 28 ft. 8 in. wide, inside dimensions (Fig. r). This furnace was in operation through all the years from 1934 to date. During 1933, the first complete year of direct or wet smelting, the plant was on a curtailed copper-production basis and the available concentrate tonnage to be smelted was limited. The average coal-firing rate in the reverberatory for that year was 124 tons per furnace day. This rate was lower than the average for years immediately preced-ing under calcine smelting practice. With this coal-firing rate, an average of 391 tons of new metal-bearing material (N.M.B.M.) was smelted per furnace day. The following year, 1934, the coal-firing rate was in-creased to 139 tons and the smelting rate increased to 448 tons N.M.B.M. per fur-nace day. In succeeding years production required that either more tonnage be smelted in the one furnace or an additional furnace be placed in operation. With this situation confronting the smelting depart-ment, it was determined to continue the program of increasing the coal-firing rate and also to intensify the temperature in the smelting zone of the furnace. In order to accomplish this, various improvements were made to aid combustion within the furnace. The burners were enlarged, in-creased primary air was supplied to the burners, and changes were made in the furnace to enlarge and streamline the out-let, thus increasing the furnace draft.

Carbon which is present as insoluble carbides in austenitic stainless steels can be measured quantitatively by dissolving the steel in iodine-methanol and analyzing the residue for carbon. Severe sen-sitization was observed in Type 302 due to precipitation of only 0.003 pet carbon. Both cold work and the presence of delta ferrite caused a marked acceleration in rate of carbide precipitation. Carbide precipitation rates in 17-7 PH were stzulied for the austenite conditioning and also the aging heat treatment. CARBON and its compounds exercise a major influence on the properties of stainless steels and their response to thermal treatment. Sensitization in 18-8 type stainless steels has been the subject of numerous investigations throughout the years. Bain, Aborn, and utherford," and Binder, Brown, Frankss all studied the effects of heating austenitic stainless steels in the temperature range of 1000° to 1500°F. The primary purpose of most of these studies was the investigation of susceptibility to in-tergranular attack in acids due to these sensitizing heat treatments. Intergranular precipitation of carbides was always associated with intergranular attack but it was recognized2 that severe attack could occur with but minute quantities of precipitated carbide. Mahla and ielsen utilized the electron microscope to make a significant contribution in illustrating the appearance and method of growth of chromium carbides during sensitizing heat treatments. However, as they stated, their studies of residues could not be used to obtain a quantitative measurement of the amount of carbon which was actually precipitated. The aim of the present investigation was to devise a relatively fast, simple method for the quantitative measurement of carbides in stainless steel. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The initial investigations were made to determine the best means of separating carbides from the matrix. A number of dissolving media were tried using both chemical and electrolytic attack. Qualitative examination of the extracted residues by X-ray diffraction indicated that solution in iodine-methanol would furnish a good means of separation. Consequently, further work was pursued along this line. The method is quite simple. The sample in the form of millings or nibblings is dissolved in iodine-methanol solution at room temperature (6-g iodine, 25-ml methanol per g of sample). The insoluble residue containing the carbides is separated by suction filtration through an ultra-fine glass filter disc. This is a very fine filter medium that will retain particles as small as 0.1 to 0.2 p in diameter. After washing with methanol and drying, the filter disc and residue are placed in a conventional combustion carbon-tube furnace and the carbon determined gravimetrically. Using this technique it was found that reproducible insoluble carbon values were obtained. However, since such small amounts of insoluble carbon were obtained on Type 302 after sensitizatipn at 1250°F and 1500°F, the values were confirmed by a second method. In the second method the sample was dissolved with copper potassium chloride and filtered through a millipore paper. This treatment dissolves the matrix but leaves undissolved practically all of the carbon irrespective of how it is present in the steel. The amount of insoluble carbon present as chromium carbide is determined by calculation from the analysis of the residue for chromium and iron. The derivation of the formula used for this calculation is discussed later. The values obtained by the indirect copper-potassium-chloride method were in agreement with those obtained by the iodine-methano1 method. See Table I. It should be pointed out that the sensitivity of the direct combustion method is not too high when the amount of carbide present is small. This is due primarily to inherent blanks and to analytical errors such as weighing. For this reason it cannot be stated with any degree of certainty that there is a significant difference between values of 0.002 and 0.005 pct. Having confirmed that the iodine-methanol extraction gave a quantitative measurement of the precipitated carbides in Type 302, exploratory tests were conducted on Armco 17-7 PH stainless steel. Samples from commercial Heat 54807 were solution annealed at 2000°F, water quenched and heated at 1250" and 1500°F, and water quenched. The analysis of Heat 54808 is as follows:
