With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel framework buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements became more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as compared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft. Geology Perlite is one of the large family of rocks originating from a granitic or acidic magma and generally has a "rhyolitic composition with a marked perlitic structure."² The name "perlite" is a derivation from "perlstein" originally given "to certain glassy rocks (hyaloliparites, hyalo-rhyolites) with numerous concentric cracks, from the fancied resemblance of broken out fragments to pearls."3 The cause of the perlitic texture is somewhat controversial. Johannsen attributes the texture to strain set up in the glass by cooling and describes the finding of peculiar, glassy balls, called marekanite, more or less rounded and showing concave indentations, which may be left when perlite is broken. Frank Rutley, on the other hand, in 1881, while working on vitreous rocks from Montana, observed that there was incipient or partially started crystallization with segregation of water toward the un-crystallized portion in all specimens of perlite examined. Further he observed evidence of strain around focii of crystallization to which he ascribed the development of the spherical cracking which gives the rock its perlitic texture.4 Widespread over the western and southwestern United States where Tertiary vulcanism is exposed, perlite commonly is associated with andesitic, basaltic, and rhyolitic lavas with inter-bedded tuffs and ash of Eocene age although some deposits are associated with rocks assigned to the Pliocene age.5, 6 n nearly all cases the perlite overlies water laid tuff beds or agglomerates or breccias of explosive nature, an outstanding exception being the occurrence of perlite as the chilled selvage of andesite intrusions.7'8 Available chemical analyses of per-lites from the western and southwestern United States indicate that they are varieties of leucorhyolites rather than of normal rhyolites, leucorhyolites having less than 5 pct of dark minerals, normal rhyolites having more than 5 pct. This conforms with Johannsen's observation that leucorhyolites are the prevailing kind in North America.9 Tables 1 and 2 give

Single-crystal wafers of zirconium have been exposed to 680°F neutral water. The single crystals were of known orientation and weight-gain data as a function of crystal orientation were obtained. These data show that all the crystal faces studied obeyed a cubic rate law out to the time of transition whereupon the crystals corroded at an approximately linear rate. The time to transition varied from 114 days for (1074) crystals to about 325 days for the (2130) faces. The epitaxial relationship be-tween metal and monoclinic oxide was found to be (0001) H (111) and [1120] 11 [101]. A black tight adherent oxide layer was formed on the crystals in the pretransition range. This black oxide was found to be monocrystalline. The white corrosion product produced after transition was found to be polycrys-talline but highly oriented. X-ray line-broadening studies found that the black oxide was a highly strained structure whereas the white oxide was relatively strain-free. These results indicate a strain-induced re crystallization or fragmentation accompanies the change from protective black oxide to nonprotective white oxide. ZIRCONIUM alloys have been used quite extensively in high-temperature aqueous environments. Alloy additions can be made to commercial sponge zirconium which enhance the corrosion resistance of the zirconium in both water and steam media, which raise the tolerance limit for certain impurities detrimental to corrosion resistance, and which reduce the amount of free hydrogen pickup during corrosion. The development of the corrosion-resistant zirconium alloys has been a long and tedious job involving trial and error methods. This technique has been necessary because of a lack of fundamental data and hence understanding of the corrosion mechanisms. The objective of the work described herein was to provide some fundamental data with respect to the aqueous corrosion of zirconium crystals as a function of the orientation of the exposed surfaces. Hg. The zirconium chunk was then cooled to below the transformation temperature (862°C) and reheated to 1200°C for 8 hr. The ultimate size of the zirconium grains increased with the number of cycles. Rapid or even furnace cooling through the transformation temperature produces a considerable amount of substructure which was intolerable in corrosion experiments as it would be in the study of any crystallographically dependent property. It was found that a high-temperature a-phase anneal for approximately 4 days reduced the substructure below the limits detectable by visual or X-ray means. Crystals so produced were carefully cut from the massive zirconium chunk and oriented by standard back-reflection Laue techniques. The crystals were then mounted in a goniometer head and, by using the three degrees of freedom available, slices on the order of 0.015 to 0.020 in. were cut parallel to any desired crystal plane. These slices were then carefully polished on both sides to produce smooth flat faces, pickled to remove about 0.002 in. per face, annealed for 1/2 hr at '750°C in a vacuum of approximately 10"5 mm Hg, flash pickled, and checked for orientation. The pickling solution was 45-45-10 vol pct HN0,-H20-HF and continuous agitation was provided to eliminate pitting of the slices. Any slice that was not within 2 deg of the desired orientation was discarded, and any evidence of substructure as indicated by the Laue spots was also grounds for discarding the sample. Thin slices were used for the corrosion tests because weight gain per area data could be obtained with only a minimum area exposed to the corrosive media that was not of the desired orientation. The thin single-crystal slices were of irregular shape and as a result the areas were determined by placing a crystal inside an inscribed square of known area, enlarging a picture of this assembly about X5, and tracing both the enlarged square and crystal with a planimeter. The zirconium used to produce these single crystals was crystal-bar grade, a typical analysis of which is given in Table I. An oxygen analysis on prepared crystals gave a concentration of 205 ppm. The hydrogen concentrations are believed to be less than 15 ppm due to the dynamic vacuum anneal given each crystal. Typical nitrogen values for zirconium treated in this manner are about 10 to 20 ppm. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Single-crystal wafers have been exposed to de-oxygenated, deionized water in static autoclaves.

Production of crude oil in the U.S.S.R. during 1940 is estimated at 222,600,000 bbl., as compared with the revised figure for the preceding year of 220,866,000 bbl., an increase of 0.79 per cent, and at least 20 per cent under the planned output. Baku district (Transcaucasus) remained the outstanding producing area, accounting for 72.33 per cent of the country's production, and this relative importance of the Apsheron Peninsula oil fields will probably continue lor many years to come. In the North Caucasus the Grozny-Dagestan area further extended its decline and the current production in this district amounts to only 6.06 Per cent Of the total U.S.S.R. output, as compared with 35.76 Per cent in 1931 The production of the Kuban-Maikop district remained virtually ullchanged from the preceding year, amounting to 7.64 per cent of the country's total. The Caucasian Province, therefore, in I940 produced 86.03 Per cent of the total production of the U.S.S.R. The promising new Permian Basin district, called Ural-Volga, and referred to sometimes as the "Second Baku," increased its production appreciably during 1940 and the output of that area amounted to 8.31 per cent of the country's total, as compared with 6.35 per cent during 1939. Production in the secondary districts of Russia continued unchanged though some new discoveries in the Emba salt-dome basin suggest that the output of that district may show some increase during the coming years. The drilling operations in Russia during 1940 reached a stage of virtual breakdown and the original footage plans were fulfilled only to the extent of around 50 per cent, while exploration drilling schedules were fulfilled only to the extent of about 25 to 35 per cent. This condition was due to the obvious lack of modern drilling rigs, of good drill pipe and of strong casing. Extended breakdowns occurred with deeper drilling, particularly because with few good drilling rigs available speed was being attempted with rotation rates that the inferior drill pipe and bits could not stand. Twistoffs and endless fishing jobs resulted. The difficulties became so serious a handicap to the Soviet oil industry that it was found imperative to order American drilling equipment and pipe in quantity, a policy that was never favored in the U.S.S.R because it requires expenditure of gold or exchange in major volume, and such exchange usually is reserved only to less bulky key items or to orders directly connected with armaments; also, oil-field machinery is very bulky and the prevailing lack of bottoms makes the transport of the indicated equipment a major problem. But little progress was similarly made in other branches of the Soviet oil industry. NO new major pipe-line construction work was undertaken, consequently the railroads continued to be overburdened with traffic that could be much more effectively handled by pipe lines. No new refinery construction of any magnitude was initiated, though several plants that had been in course of construction for several years were completed during 1940 and operation 554

Up to the present time few attempts have been made to produce hard nonmagnetic materials by heat treatment of austenitic steels. The usual result has been to cause them to pass into the martensitic stage, thus destroying to a great extent the typical austenitic properties, since this involves a transition of a portion of the iron from a face-centered to a body-centered type of atomic arrangement. High-strength nonmagnetic materials such as might be provided by properly hardening austenite are required in the electrical industry for different machine parts. In Europe nonmagnetic retainer rings for restraining the end-turns of the rotor windings in turbo-alternators have been developed as a special application of high-strength austenite. In testing1 a 28,000-kva. three-phase Siemens turbo generator running at 3000 r.p.m. at full load current, the losses in the short-circuit test were 450 kw. for the magnetic ring and 286 kw. for the nonmagnetic, and the difference should be attributable to the magnetic ring. The differences in temperatures during the same test are given in Table 1 and these show the advantage of a nonmagnetic over a magnetic retainer ring.

DESPITE the fact that its membership is spread over every continent of the globe, the Petroleum Division was able to report a very substantial attendance at its meetings. Careful planning on the part of its chairman, J. B. Urnpleby, and his associates resulted in the presentation of a program that was of timely interest -and led to discussions that will unquestionably prove to be of major value to the petroleum engineer and to the oil industry in general. Scheduling of meetings so as to avoid all conflicts made it possible to obtain a higher average attendance at the several sessions* than in previous years, and gave everyone a chance to hear all of the papers that he was interested in. The chairmen of the various meetings are to be congratulated especially for their skill in handling them so that at .no time was there the least indication of lagging interest.

Professor Sir John Cadman, K. C. M. G. (1918) D. Se., F. G. S., M. Inst. C. E., was for two years Technical Adviser' of the Chemical Warfare Department and Liaison Officer between British and French Forces. The Cross of Officer of the Legion of Honor was awarded him in 1917 by the President of the French Republic "in recognition of valuable services rendered by him in the cause of the Allies." At the moment, Sir John is Director of the Petroleum Executive and Chairman of the Inter-Allied Petroleum Conference. In 1915, he was Technical Adviser of the Trench Warfare Supply Department and was awarded C.'M. G. in 1916. J. Edwards-Leckie, C. M. G., D. S. 0., went to Valcartier as second in command of the 72d Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, with rank of Major, and later sailed for France as second in command of the unit now known as the, 16th Battalion, the Canadian Scottish. He was promoted to Lieutenat-Colonel on Aug. 14, 1915, and returned to England to take command of the 2d Canadian Reserve Training Brigade at Shornecliffe. On Jan. 2, 1916, he was promoted to Colonel. R. G. Edwards-Leckie, Lieut.-Col. of the 72d Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada (which unit later became known as the 16th Battalion, The Canadian Scottish, and under that name distinguished itself in France), left Canada for "Over There" on Sept. 14, 1914. He was promoted in France to the rank of Brigadier-General on Aug. 14, 1915, and served until severely wounded in February, 1916. He was Acting Chief of the General Staff, Canadian Overseas Forces in England from September to December, 1916. He returned to Canada in May,

THE ORDINARY well log is subjected to a great deal of criticism, much of which is well founded. Sometimes, though, the difficulty in interpreting the log is due to the fact that the geologist or engineer using the logs does not know the limitations of the drilling method used. The rotary drill, especially, has inherent limitations that make it difficult, to secure .definite information at all times. The identification of well-defined key beds is about all that can be expected from the rotary log. The formation in a drilled hole, as reported by the driller; has a direct relation to the speed with which the drill makes the hole or to the reaction of the various strata on the bit, called the "feel of the bit." When this is not thoroughly understood by the geologist or engineer endeavoring to interpret the log, the result is an erroneous correlation with other wells or a discarding of the log as worthless. GENERAL TERMS Hard and Soft.-Hard and soft are relative terms. In the case of well logs, they are very misleading as they are used in connection with both resistance to abrasion and resistance to percussion. In technical rock classification, hardness is relative resistance to abrasion. The term brittleness is used in connection with resistance to blows. These terms are misleading to the geologist or engineer who is not familiar with both the cable-tool, or standard tool, method of drilling and the rotary method. In the case of the standard tools, the driller's report of the hardness of the formation is in terms of its resistance to blows. For instance, a cable-tool driller might be able to make from 30 to 50 ft. a tour in a brittle limestone, which he would call soft and at the same time he might call a relatively soft (from a purely mineralogical standpoint) gypsum hard, because it is somewhat elastic and is not readily broken by blows. The rotary driller would reverse the terms. The limestone is hard in that it resists the abrasive action of the bit, while the gypsum might be soft in that it is readily cut by the rotary bit. In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such subprocesses as: transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed; the stressing of particles to a level high enough for breakage; removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone; and prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. Breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult subprocess to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. Two important features of the "Science of Communition" are discussed: the fracture physics and crushing under controlled conditions with special reference to single particle crushing, packed bed crushing, measurement of energy needed for fracture, fragment size distribution, and new surface area produced. The important features of these aspects are detailed, namely, energy balance of a crack, influence of environment, specimen size problems, and energy utilization in single particle crushing.

HOISTING is one of the earliest endeavors of man with machinery, for hoisting was probably used by the early Egyptians. Treadmills were used for general hoisting until early in the nineteenth century and it was a short step only to attach a Watt steam engine to the rope drum of a hoist. One of the earliest steam hoists was built for a coal mine at Frisne, near Valenciennes, France. It was a remarkable piece of engineering created by James Watt in 1811, using a wooden drum on a vertical shaft. This followed the crude hoist by Holtzhausen in 1803, which used a drum of wood on a horizontal shaft.1 In this country there were examples of crude mine hoists, which have been developed into the efficient machines in use today. African and Australian mines show examples of both extremes, and have an array of fine hoisting equipment exemplified in those built by British manufacturers. The influence of both English and American engineering in hoisting is interestingly evident in Canada. The information available to the writer does not reveal this to be true of South Africa, although American-built hoists have been furnished. Mining camps develop their own style of equipment, adapted to local conditions. For instance, the Butte mining district adheres to the straight drum with friction clutches, because of the great number of levels from which hoisting is done or to which men and material are lowered and the necessity for hoisting or lowering unbalanced. The north Michi-gan copper country uses both straight and cylindroconical drums and hoists continually in balance, so that the drums are not clutched to the main driving shaft. The Joplin mining district, Missouri, has its own peculiar small hoists. Other individual mines or localities in which a number of mines have been developed show individualisticc types of hoists, depending upon their particular problems. In each instance, however, the particular problem must be carefully analyzed, as conditions are seldom so near the same that a number of identical hoists can be used to advantage.

A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from. Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Chino mine. The grindability of the various samples was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from diflerent locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale nonhomogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully. In the past 15 years, comminution by primary autogenous grinding has been investigated and applied economically in the minerals industry, particularly in iron-ore processing. Successful application of primary grinding is described by A. A. Dor,l.' P. B. Dettmer,334 R. R. Turner, and W. F. McDermott." other authors describing the advantages of primary grinding include H. Hardinge,' R. T. Hukki,' D. S. Coyle" and F. C. Bond,"," to mention only a few. For the past several years, Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Metal Mining Div. Research Center has been investigating primary grinding of disseminated copper ores. Both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding has been explored. Ores from three of Kennecott's western operating properties and from several development properties have been tested. Host rocks include diabase, schist, silicated and argillaceous limestones, shale, granite porphyry, quartzite, and granodiorite. The object of this paper is to supplement the general knowledge in the field of primary grinding by presenting information gained from the studies with the various disseminated copper ores. Data are presented which show that carefully considered test programs are required to determine the practicality of applying autogenous grinding to a specific mining-beneficiation operation. Particularly this is so if more than one rock type occurs within an ore body or if there are wide variations in the degree of rock alteration within a deposit. Extensive sampling and subsequent testing of the ores within a mine are required if serious pitfalls are to be avoided and good engineering data acquired. We hope that this presentation will stimulate studies to increase the understanding of the fracturing process applicable to large pieces of rock, a factor which is important in autogenous grinding. Test Facilities and Procedures Both pilot-scale and full-scale test facilities were used to investigate primary grinding characteristics of the disseminated copper ores. A 6-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, a 24-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, and a 5-ft Aerofall mill were used in the studies. The Cascade mills were operated wet, while the Aerofall mill was operated both wet and dry. The Cascade mills were operated both for fully autogenous and for semi-autogenous grinding; the Aerofall mill was operated only semi-autogenously. Fully autogenous grinding, as the term is used in this presentation, is defined as the direct grinding of coarsely crushed rock by the action of the rock mass. Semi-autogenous grinding is defined as the grinding of coarsely crushed rock with the rock mass supplemented by a steel ball charge. Most of the test work was done using the 6-ft Cascade mill, operated under fully autogenous grinding conditions. Only limited testing was conducted with the 5-ft Aerofall mill and only one ore was tested using the 24-ft Cascade mill. This presentation is concerned, therefore, primarily with fully autogenous, pilot-scale grinding in the Cascade mill. Fig. 1 presents a diagram of the test facilities used with the 6-ft Cascade mill. Principal test equipment consists of a 6-ft Cascade mill, an 18-in. spiral classifier, an elevator, a 2 x 9-ft belt feeder, a conventional integrating kilowatt-hour meter, and a recording wattmeter. In testing, feed charges, adjusted as to weight, were deposited as evenly as possible on the belt feeder every 15 min. The weight of each charge was adjusted to maintain a mill charge of 27 to 30% of mill volume. The classifier was adjusted to obtain the desired size-consist of the final product, generally at 20% + 100 mesh. After equilibrium was established in the circuit, the feed, mill discharge, classifier sand, and classifier overflow were sampled and their size distributions determined. During the sampling periods, the power drawn by the mill was measured to determine the energy consumed in the reduction of the size consist of the ore solids. Fully Autogenous Pilot Grinding Tests on Various Kennecott Ores Typical test results obtained in the 6-ft Cascade mill with samples from Kennecott's Ray Mines Div., Chino Mines Div., Utah Copper Div., and a development property designated as Mine A are presented in Table 1. K. Baumgarten has returned from active service in France. He reports that he saw C. W. Campbell, formerly with the 2d Engineers on the Chateau Thierry front, and believes that the latter returned to the United States on August 1. He also saw J. J. Croston; G. J. Sielaff, recently transferred to the Gas Service; Thomas M. Smither, survivor of the Tuscania after a 10-mile swim to Ireland. While in Paris he en-deavored to see Prof. Sauveur, but was unsuccessful. F. K. Borrow was given a commission as Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1914, but had to relinquish it, on account of ill health, in August, 1915. His health has much improved and he hopes to resume active work toward the end of this year. Davis, A. W:, see British Columbia Engineers, below. Alfred Fox, Jr., enlisted in the Public Schools Brigade, Royal Fusiliers, in September, 1914; was gazetted Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in December, 1914, promoted to Captain in November, 1915, and Adjutant to 78th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, in January, 1916. He was appointed Staff Captain of the 12th Divisional Artillery in November, 1917. He has served continuously in France since July 1, 1915. He was awarded the Military Cross in January, 1917, and four times mentioned in despatches. E. Fraser-Campbell writes that he joined the London University 0. T. C. in January, 1918, for five weeks; enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in February, 1918, and attended a training course for officer cadets at Chatham for six weeks. He was commissioned 2d Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, in April, 1918. After two months on home training at Chatham, he landed in France on June 23, 1918, posted to 180th Tunnelling Co., R. E., and is now with his unit up on the line.

ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility. A long the mighty Andean Cordillera, there is splendor beyond imagination-in the natural beauty of the mountains and in daring engineering and lavish investment in the mines. This is the story of the great copper mines of Chile and Peru. Each mine has a special quality which has tested the physical and spiritual resources of the founder. In the early days of the older mines, the mining engineer of song and story was more the rule than the exception. He was physically tough, ingenious and a leader of men. In the current political and social environment of Chile and Peru, the foreign contract mining engineer is still needed; but he must be a different type of man. To John J. Selters at Cerro's Rio Blanco, the principal ingredient is still "toughness," but it is "toughness of mind" that is needed. "He probably should be a teacher." The copper mines are not new. They were, almost without exception, worked by Indians (La Exotica might prove the rule), and later by the intrepid Spaniards. Modern mining began after the turn of the century. In Chile, the first of the big ones was the Braden Copper Co. founded on the El Teniente deposit. This development was followed by Chile Exploration Co. at Chuquicamata and Andes Copper at Potrerillos. These properties have been developed over the years by vast expenditures of money and a monumental amount of labor. None was free of technical problems-metallurgy at Chuqui, marginal grade of the old mine at Andes, avalanches and the great fire at El Teniente. The evolution which has brought the established mines of Chile, and the new ones coming on stream, to their present state of development is in reality the work of wonders of input-money, engineering and responsible management in an atmosphere of political stability. Without any one of these, the result would have been failure.

An aluminum single crystal cold-rolled from (110) [1121 essentially retains its initial orientation after 99.6 pct reduction in thickness. The orientation of the recrys-tallized grains of this material can be described in terms of crystallographic rotations about principal poles of deformation texture. DURING the study of the recrystallization of a copper single crystal cold-rolled from a (110) [112] initial orientation, the orientation of the re-crystallized grains could be derived by a 30" rotation of the orientation of the cold-rolled matrix about its <111> poles.&apos; The present investigation was undertaken to extend the work done on copper&apos; to an aluminum crystal also cold-rolled from a (110) [112] initial orientation. Experimental Procedure The procedure of this experiment was similar to that reported for copper.&apos; An aluminum (99.998 pct) single crystal rod* 1 % in. in diameter was grown in back-reflection technique.&apos; The specimen (1.20x 1.004x0.6787 in. thick) was then rolled along the [112] direction. The final thickness was 0.0028 in., giving a reduction in thickness of about 99.6 pet. Specimens were cut from the rolled strip with scissors, and approximately in. of disturbed metal was removed with Tucker&apos;s reagent. The rolling edge remained intact. The specimens were sandwiched between two graphite plates and annealed in a lead or lead alloy bath which was electrically heated. Pole figures were constructed using the techniques previously described.&apos; Specimens were electrolytically polished4 and etched with 47 pct HNO8, 50 pct HC1, and 3 pct of 48 pct HF. The electrolytic polishing method and etching reagent employed for aluminum specimens were not entirely satisfactory and the microstruc-tures could not be studied in any detail. Results and Discussion The octahedral pole figure of cold-rolled aluminum strip is plotted in Fig. 1. The <111> poles spread in the transverse direction approximately 8" for the highest intensity areas. The spread in the transverse direction can be related to a rotation about two <110> directions lying in a plane containing the rolling direction and rolling plane normal. The two <110> directions and a scale of rotation for the <111> poles are shown in Fig. 2. The amount of rotation is consistent for three of the four <111> poles, about 35" to 40". The discrepancy for the fourth pole is believed to be due to limitations of the film technique. Alternate inter-

INTRODUCTION The Henderson Mine, located near Empire, Colorado, utilizes a continuous panel caving system to extract ore as one of the world&apos;s major producers of molybdenum. Any mine using a caving-by-gravity technique of mining must rely on closely controlled draw of the caved ore. This control is essential to insure proper caving action, to avoid damaging load concentrations of weight and to minimize the dilution of ore with waste material. Henderson is no exception. Draw control is a major factor in all production planning, from long- range plans to short-range and day-to-day ore scheduling. Draw control is reviewed constantly and administered daily in an effort to optimize production efficiency, ore recovery, and cave management. MINING METHOD The cave at Henderson is massive, moving slowly through large panels that are 244 m (800 ft.) wide by 610 m (2,000 ft.) long. Generally two cave areas are drawn at one time. The areas under active draw vary in size but can be as large as 244 m (800 ft.) by 244 m (800 ft. ) containing 400 draw points. Each draw point contains 45,360 mt (50,000 st) on the average and takes about two and one half years to exhaust. A complete panel is worked for seven to ten years. No pillar exists between panels, but rather a buffer zone of broken ore, or "static face," is left in each panel to be drawn with the adjacent, yet-to-be-caved panel in efforts of minimizing dilution of a working area from an exhausted one. (Figure 1) Production drifts are driven on 24.4 m (80 ft.) centers through the ore body. Between the production drifts are funnel-shaped draw bells on 12.2 m (40 ft.) x 24.4 m (80 ft.) centers to receive ore from the cave. Each bell is accessed by two draw points, one from the production drift on either side, thus forming a 12.2 m (40 ft.) x 12.2 m (40 ft.) draw pattern. Extraction of the ore is by rubber-tired, 3.8 m3 (5 yd3) load-haul-dump equipment. The LHDs then tram the ore a maximum of 49 m (160 ft.) to ore passes. Cave initiation and bell development are done from the undercut drifts which are parallel to and 17 m (55 ft.) directly above the production drifts. Longhole rings are drilled and blasted from the undercut drifts to define the bells and establish the undercut for caving. (Figure 2) DRAW CONTROL Since the cave line at Henderson is constantly advancing, it is necessary to be continually initiating new cave at one end while exhausting it at the opposite end. There must exist, therefore, an angle on the ore-waste contact in the broken rock from initiation to exhaustion. The basic concept of draw control is to keep this angle as smooth and even as possible, particularly at the time of exhaustion. If this is achieved, draw points are exhausted more or less in a line, avoiding pockets of remaining ore surrounded by exhausted areas. These pockets would cause spotty ore extraction at the time of exhaustion, increasing the amount of dilution occurring while introducing the potential for significant weight problems in the production area. To arrive at the desired angle on the ore- waste contact, maximum tonnage percentages are assigned to each row of draw points increasing at 10% or 15% increments (depending on cave size and velocity of draw) working away from the cave line. The available tonnage indicated by these percentages is the maximum allowable tonnage to be extracted from each draw point until the available tonnage percent- age is increased. As the cave moves, these percentages increase for each draw point regularly. However, in general the tonnage drawn from each draw point is kept at about 50% of this allowable maximum in order to maintain adequate available tonnage in the cave to sustain production for seven months if cave initiation were to cease. This available tonnage cushion is a safeguard built into the draw control program at Henderson to accommodate fluctuations in the rate of cave advance. When draw points move past the row of 100% tonnage availability, they are drawn past the desired 50% at the same increments per row until exhausted. Over 200 billion tons of coal reserves lie locked up in deposits west of the Mississippi River-and of this, well over 100 billion tons are recoverable only by underground mining methods. Yet, because of the associated problems of unfavorable economics and inadequate technology, western underground mines contribute less than 2% to the annual US coal production. In order to reach the billion-ton coal production level called for by President Carter, it a pears the majority of new coal development will come from the West. But for this to be possible, new mining methods and equipment must be designed to match the unique thick seam conditions.

IT is no longer necessary, if it ever was, for your annual lecturer to apologize for including in his remarks frequent references to the arrange-ment of metal atoms in crystals and for basing his arguments that metals behave as they do upon their crystal structure. Neither will any objec-tion be raised because the large metallic crystals of which we will speak are hard to prepare and of negligible commercial interest. The particular set of physical properties we propose to discuss-ferromagnetic proper-ties-may require more justification. Very few in this audience are primarily, or even remotely, interested in the ferromagnetic behavior of the metals they handle. By no means all of you ever deal, by choice or by necessity, with metals which display any ferromagnetism at all, and even those who study or control ferrous metallurgy must usually depend upon electrical engineers for assistance in ferromagnetic applications. My excuse for talking about such an obvious specialty is, like all Gaul, divided into three parts. In the first place, the members of the com-mittee who select the annual lecturer must wish the speaker to confine himself to matters he has at least thought about before he prepares his speech. In the second place, the study of ferromagnetism in crystals has, as you will soon realize, suffered in the not-too-distant past from inade-quate metallurgy. Further progress probably depends upon proper use being made of the skill and knowledge of some members of the Institute of Metals Division who have not, before today, been asked to think about the problems presented here. Finally, there is at least a sporting chance that the ferromagnetic properties of a few metal crystals will give some insight into the more generally interesting properties which they share with nonferromagnetic metal crystals.

As THE years go by, names of distinguished metallurgists will be added to the list of Henry Marion Howe lecturers, and now and then an illustrious one, for to be chosen to deliver the Howe lecture will be, I do not hesitate to predict, a highly coveted honor. I pray, therefore, your indulgence, if I confess to a feeling of gratification in having been appointed the first of these lecturers. It does not follow, however, that I am losing all sense of proportion and that I have an exaggerated idea of the little I have been able to contribute to our knowledge of iron and steel. Indeed, I fully realize how small were my claims to so great a distinction. I realize, also, that those entrusted with the task of selecting a lecturer were actuated, in coming to a decision, by their knowledge of the long and intimate friendship that had existed between the leader we have lost and myself. For their generous impulse, I thank them from the bottom of my heart; and with becoming modesty, I take up my task as the first Henry Marion Howe lecturer. It would be pleasant and indeed most appropriate to devote this entire lecture to a eulogy of Henry Marion Howe and his work, but how short the time for so large an undertaking and how inadequate my qualifications! On Aug. 28, Sept. 4, 11, and 18, 1875, a series of articles appeared in the Engineering & Mining Journal entitled "What is Steel?" With one exception, these constitute the first professional paper of Henry Marion Howe. That was nearly fifty years ago, three years after graduating from Harvard University. He was then but twenty-seven years old and already his keenly inquisitive mind was actively at work. There is a touch of romance in this young metallurgist who, on entering his. scientific career, destined to be so brilliant and so fruitful, on the very threshold of it, seems to have selected as his motto "What is Steel?" Like a knight-errant of science, he started on his quest for an answer to that question, a quest which was to last forty-seven years and which death only brought to an end. And while thus engaged how many wonderful messages we received from him, each one bringing us nearer to the goal! How illuminating, inspiring and encouraging were those messages! How well-equipped he was to wrench from nature some of the secrets she so jealously guards! How broad his learning and how clear his

Discussion of the Paper of Albert R. Ledoux, read at the Atlantic City Meeting, February, 1904. ARTHUR JARMAN, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia&apos; (communication to the Secretary*): Some remarks upon. Dr. Ledoux&apos;s interesting paper from one who has not visited America may, I hope, be of interest to members. It appears to me that there is considerable difference between the training of the American and of the British mining engineer. Not that the subjects are different, but rather in the way in which they are handled, the illustrations being, as far as possible, mining in character. Colloquial instruction is unknown in English curricula, but could be introduced with advantage. Students here assure me that an hour of conversation is of tar more use to them than an hour of the best lecturing. In England a school-year of 6 or 7 months would be considered very short indeed; but Americans do not consider it so, for the reason that the rest of the year is mostly spent in acquiring practical acquaintance with their subjects in works or in the field, and the shorter courses, when coupled with this large amount of outside expe¬rience, produce an essentially practical-minded engineer, who is also more of a business man; whereas the English system, though excellent from a scholastic point of view, produces the theoretical rather than the practical man. British schools are waking up, however, and the practical aspect of the engineer&apos;s training is receiving greater consideration. Once launched upon his career, the American engineer is immediately called upon to exercise his self-reliance and ingenuity, if he is to retain the confidence of his employers; but what can we say of English directors? In how many cases is the engineer allowed to guide the destinies of his company?
