Under certain conditions, a molten zone can be made to move through a solid by impressing a stationary temperature gradient across the solid. This phenomenon can be utilized in fabricating semiconductive devices, growing single crystals, joining, boring fine holes in solids, measuring diffusivities in liquids, small scale alloying, and purification. Fundamentals and exemplary applications are outlined. ANEW aspect of the travel of a molten zone through a solid is considered in this paper. Whereas, in previously described zone melting techniques,'-' zones were usually caused to move by changing the position or temperature of a heat source, in the present technique a zone is made to move by impressing a temperature gradient across it. For example, a thin layer of molten A1-Si alloy, sandwiched between two silicon slabs having a temperature gradient normal to the layer, will travel through the hotter slab. One feature of temperature gradient zone melting, as this technique will be called here, is that zones of unusually small dimensions can be maintained. This leads to such diverse uses as have been listed in the abstract. In this paper fundamentals of the movement of a molten zone in a temperature gradient, and some practical applications thereof, are outlined. Assumptions The movement of a molten zone through a solid body of solvent substance in which a temperature gradient exists will be discussed. The length of the zone will be its dimension in the direction of motion. The direction of the temperature gradient will be toward the region of higher temperature. To be considered is a binary or higher order solute-solvent system in which the concentration of solute in the molten zone is sufficient to produce a lowering of the freezing temperature of the solvent which is at least of the order of the temperature range impressed on the charge. While we discuss primarily molten zones in a solid matrix, the principles are applicable to solid or vaporous zones in a solid matrix, a requirement being that the diffusivity in the zone be substantially greater than in the matrix. Diffusion of solute into the surrounding solid will be assumed negligible. In general, its presence will not basically alter the conclusions to be drawn. For illustration, a system represented by the partial constitutional diagram of Fig. la will be discussed, in which k, the distribution coefficient defined in the figure, is constant and less than unity. However, the technique is applicable to any solute- solvent system in which one component lowers the melting point of another component. Movement of a Molten Zone in a Temperature Gradient Consider, in the system AB of Fig. 1, where B is designated the solute and A the solvent, the effect of sandwiching a thin layer of solid B between blocks of solid A and placing the whole in a temperature gradient such that the temperature of the layer is above the lowest melting temperature of the system. Surrounded by an excess of A, the layer will dissolve A, becoming molten, and expand in length." As so- lution of A continues, at both interfaces, the mean solute concentration in the zone will move to the right in Fig. la, until at temperature T, the liquid at the cooler interface reaches the liquidus concentration C,. Solution of A thereupon ceases because the liquid T1 is saturated with A. The liquid at the hotter end of the zone, being at temperature T2, is not saturated with A at concentration C1. Hence solution of A continues there and concentration C2 is approached. A concentration gradient therefore is set up in the zone, causing A to diffuse toward the cool end and B toward the hot end. As a result, the liquid at the cool interface becomes supersaturated and a layer of crystalline A containing concentration kc, of B in solid solution freezes. Since a source of A

Production of crude in 1937 decreased (Tables 1 and 5) by about 2 per cent, while gas production for that period increased by about 6 per cent after a slight decrease in 1936 (0.4 per cent).' As in preceding years, drilling operations were confined principally to extensions of old oil fields in the Jaslo district (fields 1 and 7) and to some extent to such extensions in the Stanislawbw district (field 27). Deepening of old wells to horizons reached more recently by new wells gave on the average better results per well than those attained by new wells (Table 3). Reserves of proved lands have increased some by new oil fields discovered, Targowiska (field 8) and Czarna (field 19) both of which, however, have only small production. The Daszawa gas field (field 25) has not been extended, but two new gas fields were located instead— Opary, distant 25 km. (151/2 miles) northwest of Daszawa, Balicze at 12 km. (7 1/4 miles) southeast of Daszawa, and Kalusz (TESP Company exploiting potassium salts) in the vicinity of the town of that name (field 33). Drilling upon the gas area near Tarnbw and Debica, while gas-bearing sandstone had been found at depths of from 300 to 512 meters (984 to 1680 ft.) (Zdziary No. 2) and at 220 m. (722 ft.) [pressure 11 atmospheres, flow 24 cu. m. per min. (847 cu. ft.)] (Przyborbw No. l), has not as yet ascertained horizons qualified for permanent exploitation. The exploring well near Kos6w remained for the last seven months at the depth of 1420 m. because of the collapse of rotary drilling pipe. Below the 300-m. level no gas sands have been encountered at this well. Single crystals of copper and silicon-iron were cold rolled in orientations chosen to produce individually the major components of the poly crystalline deformation texture. The orientation dependence of the recrystallization kinetics was studied relative to the primary recrystallization textures of these specimens. It is not possible to rationalize the poly crystalline re crystallized textures on this basis. The results suggest an important role of the interaction of adjacent crystals during the deformation of aggregates. BRICK and Williamson1 first noted evidence that the recrystallization temperature was different for straight-rolled and cross-rolled copper given comparable reductions. Michalak and Hibbard2 investigated quantitatively the effect of rolling procedure on the kinetics of recrystallization of cold-rolled copper and found that material cold-rolled the same amount by straight-pass, cross-pass, and compression-pass techniques developed different deformation and recrystallization textures, different 1-hr recrystallization temperatures, and different recrystallization kinetics. However, the temperature dependence of the rate of recrystallization was essentially the same for all techniques. Similar results were obtained on iron. Dunn and Koh3 in studying the recrystallization textures of cold-rolled silicon-iron single crystals reported large differences in the annealing temperatures and times required to recrystallize specimens of different orientations cold-rolled the same amount. Liu4 and Liu and Hibbard5 utilized the concept of different recrystallization temperatures for different orientations of cold-rolled crystals to rationalize the difference in recrystallization textures found in various face-centered-cubic metals. Their explanation predicted a significant difference in the recrystallization kinetics of deformed (110) [112] crystals as compared to (358) [352] crystals, and, in fact, Liu4 reported evidence that this difference existed at least qualitatively. Verbraak6 who rolled and recrystallized a series of copper single crystals found that the double (112) [111] rolled orientation is related to recrystallized cube texture formation. The effect of rolling intensity on the relative amount of cube component suggests an important role of recrystallization kinetics. Walter and Hibbard7 while trying to relate the behavior of rolled and recrystallized single crystals of silicon-iron to the behavior of polycrystal-line silicon-iron again noted that differences in recrystallization kinetics were necessary to rationalize their results. The purpose of the present investigation was to obtain quantitative kinetic data on the recrystallization of single crystals of both copper and silicon-iron rolled to initial isolated individual orientations corresponding to those found in the polycrystalline deformation textures. These data might indicate the importance of the deformation orientation, i.e. the range of available nuclei, the deformed matrix orientation into which these nuclei grow, and the orientation dependence of their growth rate during primary recrystallization on this texture. THE Pittsburg coal field in western Pennsylvania, is conceded to be the most important in the world. To measure its importance it is necessary to understand the extent of its service in the various industries of the country. Probably 90 per cent. of the pig iron manufactured in the United States up to the present time has been made by using coke manufactured from the Pittsburg coal seam in western Pennsylvania. This coal field is the foundation on which the city of Pittsburg rests and is the reason for the great growth of the iron industry in the Pittsburg district. Iron ore is brought to this district, not because Pittsburgh is a. natural location, over other locations, for the iron and steel industry-as its position places the manufacturer at the mercy of the railroads-but the ore is brought 1,100 miles to meet the fuel. It can be said that the illuminating-gas industry in the United States has used this coal exclusively to the same extent that the pig-iron maker has used it. It may be also said that 20 to 25 per cent. of the fuel used on railroads in the United States conies from this coal field. The Pittsburg coal field is unquestionably the center of the industrial population of the United States, for in addition to the industries of the district and those closely adjoining, it has tributary to it all the cities and industries along the Great Lakes and practically all of Canada with the exception of the extreme western and eastern ends. It supplies the industries and population west of Duluth and Superior many hundreds of miles. This coal is floated down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, supplying the towns en route, and is delivered in New Orleans, a distance of 2,200 miles, for approximately SO to 90 c. per ton transportation cost. It is delivered on the docks of Superior and Duluth at a cost of transportation 50 c. a ton less than the cost of transporting the same coal from Pittsburg to a local consumer in Philadelphia. With other Appalachian coals it has large markets east and along the seaboard, especially for byproduct-coke making and the illuminating-gas industry. It is considered the premier railroad fuel of the world on account of the fact that this coal in a given-sized locomotive will probably haul more cars than any other coal in the

It was shown through high-pressure experiments that tin loss by volatilizatim is necessary for the degrada-tion of the superconducting transition temperature of Nb,Sn associated with high-temperature annealing. Crystallochemical analysis of the degraded Nb3Sn showed that it constitutes a new phase with ordered niobium-site vacancies, created by the migration of niobium atoms to vaccnt tin sites. This new phase was found to form when 4 pct Nb-site vacancies were present. It has a transition temperature of 6'K and a lattice parameter of 5.283A. A similar degradation effect was observed in Nb,Al. Its superconducting transition temperature dropped from 16.5" to 8" K following a high-temperature annealing. The superconducting temperature degradation in these 0-tungsten structure compounds is attributed to the disruption of the interchain d bonding by the periodic interruption of the niobium atom chains. By annealing the degraded Nb, Sn at 1000 C in nitrogen its normal superconducting behavior is restored most likely due to the incorporation of nitrogen atoms causing the elimination of the ordered vacancies. HANAK et al.' have observed low superconducting transition-temperature values (T, - 9"K) in some NbsSn samples deposited from the vapor phase. They attributed such low T, values to disorder in the 0-tung-sten structure. Much lower T values (down to 5.6"K) were reported by Reed et al.zC for NbsSn samples annealed at high temperatures. These authors also attributed this degradation effect to disorder (random occupation of the A and B sites by niobium and tin) but pointed out that such disorder could be brought about (by high-temperature treatment) only in samples containing niobium in excess of the stoichiometric composition NbsSn. Both groups reported that the normal superconductivity behavior could be rever-sibly restored by appropriate heat treatment. Courtney et al., also found that degradation in NbsSn requires excess niobium brought about by the loss of tin during the treatment. However, these investigators proposed that the degradation is due to niobium-site vacancies resulting from the migration of the niobium atoms to the vacated tin atom sites. They did not consider the reversibility of the effect. The present study attempts to establish the nature of the above degradation phenomenon. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All compounds prepared for this investigation were made from the powders or filings of the elements which were intimately mixed, cold-pressed into a cylindrical pellet at approximately 50,000 lb per sq in., and then submitted to the desired heat treatment. The samples annealed under high pressure were placed in a MgO sample container which was mounted in a pyrophyllite tetrahedron designed for a tetra-hedral-anvil press. Details of the experimental arrangement are given elsewhere. This setup allowed heating at 1800°C or above under pressures in excess of 30kbars for 3 hr. The samples annealed in a vacuum were prepared in a high-temperature vacuum furnace which could reach temperatures up to 2400°C under a pressure of 2 x lo-' Torr. For annealing in a reactive atmosphere, a quartz tube was placed in a clamshell furnace and the desired gas ambient passed through the tube. Lattice parameters were determined using a Debye-Scherer 114.6-mm camera. Cohen's method, programmed for the IBM 7094 computer, was used to calculate the lattice parameter from the measured d spacings. X-ray integrated intensity measurements were made on several samples. These samples were ground to -400 mesh and the powder mixed with a solution of collodion in amyl acetate. The mixture was poured into a depression milled in a bakelite disc. When the mixture dried, the surface of the disc was ground flat leaving a diffraction surface defined by the face of the disc. The disc was mounted in a Philips rotating specimen holder which allowed the rotation of the sample in the plane of the diffraction surface and the integrated intensity measured using a scintillation counter and a pulse-height analysis sys-tem. The superconducting transition temperatures were determined by means of self-inductance techniques.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The Role of Tin Loss in the Degradation of Super-conductivity. The loss of tin during high-temperature annealing can be effectively suppressed by annealing under high hydrostatic pressures. Accordingly, a series of experiments were performed under pressures of approximately 30kbars. This pressure was the minimum under which high-temperature experiments could be safely performed in the particular pressure apparatus employed. Experiments were also designed to test high-pressure effects on the superconductivity behavior of NbJSn. The results of the high-pressure annealing experi-ments are summarized in Table I. THE increase in the number of coal-cleaning plants employing dense-medium processes occurring since 1946 is especially interesting when viewed historically. Both sand and magnetite were introduced as material for heavy mediums at about the same time, sand in the Chance process in 1921 and magnetite in the Conklin process in 1922, but from that point on their records diverge. The Chance process enjoyed a steady growth from its inception, whereas no additional magnetite plants were built in the United States for over 20 years. Then, following the close of the World War 11, magnetite was again introduced, this time with marked success. During the following years some 47 plants employing magnetite medium were built. This rapid growth of dense-medium cleaning has been concurrent with widespread adoption of full-seam mining on one hand and a return to a more competitive market on the other. At a time when changing mining practice has provided cleaning plants with dirtier coal and changing market conditions have simultaneously demanded a cleaner product, the industry has through necessity turned to improved preparation. The inherently greater sharpness with which dense-medium processes can separate coal from impurity is thus helping to hold the line against ever-increasing mining costs and at the same time assisting materially in retaining badly needed markets. Although dense-medium cleaning unquestionably offers a distinct advantage when the washing problem is difficult, other methods can provide almost equally high efficiency when the coal is easy to wash. Moreover, fine coal cannot yet be treated by heavy medium in a proved process, although the Driessen cyclone is in the pilot-plant stage. Most of the present types of dense-medium equipment have been in use only a few years, and the dearth of information in the literature concerning their performance characteristics is entirely understandable, Nevertheless this information is necessary if the process is to be intelligently applied to individual cleaning problems. Without data on the efficiency of a process in a particular type of separation, it is difficult to assess the advantage to be expected from it. Similarly, the role of particle size in heavy-medium separation is important in some cases, yet there is little published information on this aspect. To mention only one more of the numerous points on which essential information is lacking, the bearing of medium characteristics on performance has been discussed only in qualitative terms. It was with the hope of providing information on some of these points that the Bureau of Mines built a dense-medium pilot plant for cleaning coal at its Northwest Experiment Station in Seattle in 1950. The plant has been operated continuously since that time, and over 50 runs have been made on 7 coals exhibiting a wide range of washability characteristics. An idea of the magnitude of this work will be gained from the fact that examination of the plant products has involved some 600 float-and-sink separations and about 2500 ash determinations. A laboratory pilot plant is especially well adapted to investigate many aspects of performance because close control over test conditions can be exercised and because a large number of tests can be made rapidly. On the other hand, factors such as consumption of medium and other cost items can be investigated satisfactorily only in a commercial plant. Actually, the two forms of investigation should be complementary, with the laboratory work pointing the way for confirming tests in commercial units. Pilot Plant The dense-medium pilot plant employed for this work comprises a 24x30-in. drum-type separating vessel, a 12-in. densifier, a 12-in. magnetic separator, a 26-in. x 9-ft vibrating screen, and the necessary pumps and conveyors for handling materials. Arrangement of these units corresponds with the flowsheet used in most commercial plants, except that a thickener is not provided for the feed to the magnetic separator. Coal and refuse discharge from the separating drum to the vibrator, which is divided longitudinally down the center. Medium draining through the first 3 ft of the screen is recirculated directly to the drum. Sprays on the middle 3 ft of the screen rinse medium from the products, and the last 3-ft section is for dewatering. Dilute medium from the rinsing and dewatering sections is pumped to the magnetic separator, where magnetic solids are recovered. These are pumped to the densifier, from which they return to the medium-drainage sump by gravity through a demagnetizing coil. The drum-type separating vessel is a scale model of a commercial unit. Feed enters axially at one end of the drum just below the surface of the bath, and float material overflows through a circular opening at the other end. Particles sinking to the bottom of the bath are picked up by lifting flights bolted to the inner wall of the drum, elevated out of the bath, and sluiced to the vibrating screen. Baffles suspended in the bath prevent float material from entering the sink-lifting flights. About 8 gpm of medium is used to sluice the feed into the drum. An additional 15 to 24 gpm, depending upon operating conditions, is added through two pipes dipping into the bath behind the baffle on the side where the sink-lifting flights enter the bath. The bath available for separation is 2 ft long and 13 in. wide, giving an area of 2.08 sq ft. Depth of bath from the surface to the top of the sink-lifting flights, measured vertically below the axis, is 6 in.

About 1300 members and guests attended the Seventh Annual Mid-winter Convention of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, which was held in the Engineering Societies' Building, New York, on Feb. 19 to 21. The opening session was a joint session with the American Institute of Mining Engineers, when welding was discussed. The various phases of standardization in engineering work were discussed by President Comfort A. Adams at the Thursday morning session. Thursday afternoon was spent in visiting. Some of the guests visited the Brooklyn Navy Yards, where they inspected the power plant, shops, dry, docks, etc. ; others visited the Bell System Laboratories of the Western Electric Co. The predominant orientation in both straight-rolled and cross-rolled molybdenum is the {100} [110] texture. Upon complete recrystallization, this same texture predominates, but there is less spread about the ideal orientation. A secondary orientation about the [111] direction as the axis develops in cross-rolled sheet. Compression-rolled sheet exhibits random orientation in the plane of the sheet. Some mechanical properties were measured at varying angles to the rolling direction to determine the effect of preferred orientation on anisotropy in molybdenum sheet which had been straight, cross, or compression rolled. THE development of the arc-cast process has made available large ingots of molybdenum from which it is possible to roll sheet of considerable size. It is anticipated that such sheet will be further fabricated by spinning, drawing, stamping, or forming. Anisotropy of physical properties caused by the preferred orientation developed in the sheet during rolling may be expected to affect the behavior of the metal when subjected to these fabricating operations. To produce a sheet which will be most amenable to the fabrication of a given shape by a particular operation, consideration should be given to the directions and magnitudes of plastic deformations produced in the operation. When possible, the rolling schedule should be controlled to develop a texture which favors the required deformation. The existence of preferred orientations in rolled molybdenum sheet has been reported by Jeffries,' Konobejewsky,' Fujiwara," Goss,' and Ransley and Rooksby." None of these investigators obtained sufficient X-ray data to permit the construction of pole figures; instead, they based their conclusions upon Debye-Scherrer patterns of a limited number of positions. Ransley and Rooksby devoted some attention to transcrystalline cleavage at 45" to the rolling direction, indicating that it is appreciable in polycrystalline material only when the crystals are in the ideally preferred condition, and that this condition is only approached if the metal has been rolled successively in two perpendicular directions. In a recent paper, Custers and Riemersmao introduced the first pole figures to describe the textures of straight-rolled and cross-rolled molybdenum sheet. To increase the knowledge concerning the generation and effects of preferred orientations in molybdenum sheet, an investigation was undertaken to determine the effects of variations in rolling schedule and annealing treatments on preferred orientation, and to correlate preferred orientations with some mechanical properties. The orientations of straight-rolled, cross-rolled, and compression-rolled sheet have been determined by X-ray analysis, both as-rolled and after recrystallization. Pole figures have been constructed to describe the textures produced by these various rolling procedures. Texture of Cast Molybdenum Ingots In the arc-cast process, molybdenum powder is pressed into a vertical column which is sintered to increase its strength as it proceeds downward into a water-cooled mold, where the metal is melted in an alternating-current arc established between the end of the formed powder electrode and the metal bath at the top of the growing ingot. Since the solid-liquid interface moves continuously upward in the mold, the crystal axes are not normal to the cold surface of the mold but have the curvature shown in Fig. la. X-ray analysis reveals that the cube axis is the fiber axis and that it is normal to the cold surface of the mold; that is, the [loo] direction is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ingot. The purpose of this study is to present the results of a detailed survey of the financial and operating aspects of 30 oil companies comprising a major sample of the American petroleum industry. This review supplements a previous paper entitled "Capital Flow and Capital Formation in the Petroleum Industry, 1934-1941,"a and deals not only with a longer period but also gives new and more revealing analyses of the capital movements and characteristics. The data are gathered from published financial statements of the companies, especially the annual reports to stockholders and Form 10-K to the Securities and Exchange Commission, supplemented by confidential information. The 30 oil companies covered by this study are listed on the leading stock exchanges and for the purpose of analysis are grouped as follows: 9 companiesb engaged principally in crude production, 4 companiesc with production averaging in excess of refinery requirements, and 17 companiesd with refinery throughput in excess of crude production. These samples are sufficiently broad and representative to constitute norms against which individual company performances may be profitably compared. The 30 companies in 1942 produced 54 per cent of the Nation's total output of crude oil and refined 79 per cent of the country's crude run to stills. The financial data apply predominantly to the domestic oil business, although 15 of the companies have investments and operate facilities in foreign countries. The net value of these foreign holdings amounted to 724 million dollars, or 12 per cent, of the combined net assets of the 30 oil companies at December 31, 1942.

J. A. RICHARDSON[t]-Mr. Stuckey's account of the geology of the kaolins of North Carolina suggests that they exhibit some features similar to those of the Malay Peninsula. About one half of British Malaya (some 26,000 square miles) is occupied at the surface by igneous rocks, of which granite and its associated derivatives constitute fully 90 pct. The average granite is a biotic variety. It is predominantly potassic but carries, in addition, notable amounts of soda and lime so that albite and albiteoligoclase are generally common constituents of the rock. The minor derivatives from granite "magma" likewise include potassic and sodi-potassic members. Decomposition of the granitic rocks has led to the formation of kaolin in many localities, but, in general, the deposits are rather small and, at present, none is exploited commercially. True primary or residual kaolins (as defined by Stuckey; p. 48 Vol. 173, p. 2 TP 2219) have been developed from feldspar veins, pegmatites and from other granitic differentiates which cut through the larger masses of granite; they are usually small and narrow. Kaolin has been derived from aplite, quartz porphyry, quartz micro-porphyry, felsites and microgranites belonging to a complex known as the Chegar Perah-Pulai intrusion in northwest Pahang and southwest Kelantan. The bulk of the component rocks has been more or less strongly sheared. Kaolin-like end products have been formed from both sheared and nonsheared varieties. Kaolin has been formed also by the complete breakdown of trondjemite flanking the northwestern and western margins of the complex Bukit Ranjut syenite intrusion in northwest Pahang. These trondjemites range in composition from essentially quartz-free albiteplagioclasites to quartz-free microcline rocks; they are, in effect, the syenitic homologues of white sodic and potassic granite-aplites. The granites in Malaya have generally undergone more or less severe surficial weathering leading to the production of a spongy and rather cellular or a soft "mealy" material (sandy clay) down to depths of about 100 ft; in places the granite is strongly decomposed down to 150 ft. There has occurred, therefore, widespread partial kaolinization, but, in general, no extensive deposits of good quality kaolin seem to have been formed by these processes of decay. Frequently, the katamorphic processes of desilicification have advanced beyond the production of kaolin towards the formation of lateritic end products. The more important Malayan kaoiins seem to be confined to the western alluvial plains, particularly in areas either where granite crops out at surface, or where it forms the bedrock of the alluvium. There are numerous excellent examples around Gopeng and elsewhere in the Kinta Valley of Perak. Such kaolins belong to Stuckey's groups of secondary deposits, and, like them, these also may be bedded. Field observations have established the existence of what for want of a better name is referred to by the Malayan Geological Survey as "granite wash." It is believed that granite, undergoing extensive deeply penetrative and probably rather rapid destruction under humid tropical weathering (temperature around 90°F; rainfall about 100 in. per annum; high humidity) "flowed," was moved by "creep" and, in addition, probably slumped in large waterlogged masses of sandy clay from topographic salients onto the adjacent flats. The density of liquid plutonium was determined, by a pycnometm'c technique, from 664 to 788°C and exhibited a temperature dependence, which could be expressed as:. P= C17.63 - 1.52 x 10-"t] +0.04 g per cc where t = OC. These density values compare favorably with the values previously obtained by a technique utilizing Archimedes' principle. The apparatus and method were evaluated when the densities 0.f molten tin and bismuth were measured and found to be in agreement with accepted literature values. PLUTONIUM or an alloy of plutonium in the liquid state has been proposed as a fuel for a fast-breeder type nuclear power plant.' Since knowledge of the liquid density of plutonium is required for the proper design of such a system, this study was undertaken. In addition, the density and volume expansion coefficient of liquid plutonium are of interest for comparison with these same properties of the six allotropic modifications of the solid metal. Comstock and GibneyZ were first to report a value for the density of liquid plutonium. The value for only one temperature, 665"C, was calculated from data obtained by the radiography of the meniscus, Fig. 3. Recently, the density at a series of temperatures has been reported by Knight,3 who obtained his values by using a differential volumeter, and by 01-sen, Sandenaw, and Herrik, who obtained their values from measurements of the loss in weight of a tungsten bob immersed in the liquid. Many published forecasts have since been made. NO STRANGER phenomenon exists in the American mining industry today than the so-called bootleg anthracite industry in Pennsylvania which now produces probably close to 15 per cent of the total hard coal out- put of the State. Instead of being what - was first thought to be a temporary condition, countenanced because of the desperate condition of some of the miners at the depth of the depression. it is thriving now as never before. Re- ports of it have penetrated all over the world, as exemplified by inquiries concerning it in Durban, South Africa mentioned by John C. Cosgrove in his article in the July MINING AND META LURGY.

IN recent years interest has been aroused in flotation rate studies both from a technical and a more practical aspect. With increasing fineness of grind becoming a necessity in treatment of low grade ores, difference:; in flotation rates of various size ranges will assume importance in the evaluation of overall recovery results. Theoretical analysis of flotation kinetics was initiated by Schuhmann,' who sought to define flotation rate of a given mineral and specified size range in terms of certain physical variables of the flotation system. Using as a basis for his analysis the bubble-particle encounter hypothesis previously advanced by Gaudin,' Schuhmann writes for the rate of flotation (R,.) of particles of average size x, Rx = PcPa(x) V F. [1] In this relation Pc and Pa represent, respectively, the probability of collision between particle and gas bubble in a given time interval and the probability of adhesion of particle to the bubble after collision. Rigorously speaking, the term PC does not have the significance of a probability factor, since it depends on the time interval and therefore can be numerically greater than unity. The term c(x) expresses the concentration of particles of an average size x in the flotation cell in weight per unit volume of pulp, and V denotes the total volume of pulp in the cell. The product, P,c(x)V, defines the frequency of particle-bubble collisl.on, and when it is multiplied by P,, the number of collisions per unit time resulting in successful adherence is obtained. The factor, F, measures the froth stability and is introduced because after fruitful bubble-particle contact some particles may still riot reach the froth launder. Coalescence of bubbles in the froth column or too short a bubble life could account for this effect. Schuhmann also introduced the concept of "specific flotation rate" (Q) to allow for the relative abundance of different mineral species in the flotation pulp. The specific flotation rate, having the dimension of reciprocal time, is defined as Eq. 2: Qx =Rx/c(x)v [2] and it also follows from Eq. 1 that Qx = PcPaF. [31 The theoretical aspects of flotation kinetics were also considered by Sutherland,3 who tried to improve Eq. 1 by expressing the probability factors in terms of such physical variables as particle radius (x), bubble radius (X), velocity of bubble relative to particle (v), the number of bubbles per unit volume of pulp (N) and the induction period (A) necessary for air-mineral adhesion. SINCE the time of the early Egyptians, the use of copper has been a boon to the life of most of the civilized world. Its use has been varied; in many connections, the art by which it attained its greatest usefulness has been lost. In this paper an endeavor will be made to take into consideration some of the many changes that have occurred during the last 40 years of copper-smelting operations. During that period the copper blast furnace has been almost forced out of existence by new methods of ore concentration-first, gravity concentration, and then flotation. These new methods of concentration introduced many new factors into the metallurgy of copper. The product was wet, it was fine and it was high grade. To overcome all these factors many changes have been necessary throughout the smelting agenda. New equipment has been necessary for transportation, unloading, sampling, bedding and moisturing in all smelting plants, especially the custom smelter. During the early days of "flotation," little was known about filtering or the use of an alkaline circuit; often the concentrate going to the smelter contained 20 to 25 per cent moisture. It is easy to imagine the difficulty arising with a product of this nature when it had to be shoveled by hand labor. To meet these conditions, mechanical unloading and sampling devices were soon developed. In many instances such good progress was made that actual costs for handling this unfavorable product were lower than those formerly incurred on the old product. Today most sampling of copper ores and concentrates is being done by mechanical sampling, pipe or augur sampling, or shovel sampling. Where concentrates are uniform in metal content, a great many of the plants now use pipe or augur sampling. For spotty ores, the old shovel sample with cone and quartering during the final stages is still in use. Where big tonnages are handled, mechanical sampling of concentrates is being done, with satisfactory results. To curtail slow and tedious cutting and mixing procedure, mechanical mixing boxes, splitters and cutters are used to cut down labor costs. MILLING As crude ores become scarcer, the use of milling operations increases. The few crude ores that are still smelted are used as fluxing types. To use these ores finer grinding has been found advantageous. This has made for better bedding and fluxing conditions, which in turn makes for faster smelting, lower fuel consumption and better metal recovery. The degree of fineness is more or less determined by the nature of the product. Most plants have set a standard of through ¾ -in. mesh screen for roaster- reverberatory smelting and through ¾ in. mesh screen for converter fluxes. For some refractory ores; even finer grinding has been found to be advantageous for good reverberatory smelting.

THE system of pitwork used with the Cornish pumping engine, and which, for want of a better name, we may call the Cornish system of pitwork, consists essentially of a series of plunger-pumps, situated one below the other, in a shaft or incline, the plungers being operated by a rod called the pitman or pump-rod, which must, therefore, extend from the motor at the surface to the lowest pump. The subject will be best understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which k may be taken as typical of the ordinary plunger-pump, in which S is the suction pipe, u, the lower valve situated in the H piece T; v, the upper valve situated in the valve-box O; I, the mounting-pipe or column through which the water is carried to the surface; L, the plunger-barrel, and P, the plunger working through the stuffing-box, and actuated by the branch rod r, which is attached to the main pump-rod, R. The action of the pump is as follows : On the ascent of the plunger, acting now by suction, the water flows from the reservoir through the valve u, into the barrel, L. On the descent of the plunger, the water is forced up through the valve, v, which acts merely as a check valve, into the pipe, I, through which it is, at each successive down-stroke of the plunger, forced upward until it reaches the next reservoir, from which it is taken by another similar pump, and so on until it reaches the surface or drain-tunnel. The pump is obviously only single-acting, i. e., it acts only during one-half of its entire stroke. The weight of water raised during the up-stroke of the plunger is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base is the area of the plunger and whose height is the mean distance between the plunger-face and the surface of water in the lower reservoir, a distance not usually exceeding 12 or 15 feet, and which obviously cannot under the most favorable circumstances, exceed 25 or 30 feet. The water forced up during the down-stroke is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base equals the area of the plunger and whose height equals the length of the mounting column above the mean position of the plunger-face, say from 150 to 300 feet. In Au-Ag alloys the critical resolved shear stress Tc. at room temperature is essentially a parabolic function of atomic concentration:' the 50 at. pct Ag-50 at. pct Au alloy is about 10 times stronger than the pure metals. This strengthening occurs in spite of the similarity in valence and atomic size. Solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals is characteristically greater at low temperatures than at room temperature. In Ag-10 at. pct Au and Au-10 at. pet Ag; r, (20.4K)/Tc (300°K) is 2.3 and 2.5. respectively.- compared to 1.2 in pure silver.3 Suzuki' and Flinn5 explained the alloy strengthening at room temperature as a combination of Suzuki locking and short-range order hardening. The agreement between the computed and measured strengthening was very good: however, in Ag base-A1 alloys Hendrickson and Fine6 concluded that Suzuki locking resulted mainly in a yield drop effect. Recent reviews of the solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals by Fleischer2 and Haasen8, 9attributed the strengthening at room tenl-perature to the combined effect of atom nlisfit and change in shear modulus 011 the long-range stress field surrounding a dislocation. The parameter used by Fleischer was The shear tnoduli of Ag-0 to 6 at. pct Au alloys were measured by Pur-wins. Labusch. and Haasen.In While addition of 4 at. pct Au caused an appreciable increase in the C,, elastic constant. there was a decrease on increasing the solute to 6 at. pct Au: C,, and C :: were not measured in the 6 at. pct alloy. The greater solution hardening at low temperatures implies the presence of short-range interactions between the solute atoms and dislocations These include size and electronegativity effects. Whether the extra alloy strengthening at low temperatures is due to locking or friction hardening is still a controversy."".' In the present research the stress-strain behavior of Au-Ag single crystals containing 1 to 5 at. pct Ag and 1 to 5 at. pct Au was measured vs strain rate and temperature down to 4.2' K. Particular attention was paid to yield drop effects. These have not been previously reported. PROCEDURES The alloys were supplied by the Engelhard Industries. Inc.. as strips 0.050 by 0.250 by 12 in. The compositions are given in Table I. Single crystals were grown under static vacuum using a traveling molten zone technique.
