In June, 1981 the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the U.S. coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent". Until recently, clean coal has had a low selling price and satisfying the purchasers' specifications required only minimum cleaning. However, it is becoming more apparent that the increases in coalfired utility power plants forced outage rates are relative to the deterioration in the quality of fired coal. Utility companies are becoming aware of the economic value of reducing the variability of ash, moisture and sulfur in steam coal purchase orders. New contracts are currently being negotiated between electric utilities and coal producers that include provisions for increased penalties if the product does not meet specifications. With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. This paper discusses the various types and applications of nuclear instrumentation currently in use in the coal preparation industry.

Historically, the presence of methane has been a problem, mainly in and around the working areas of active coal mines, and only in these area has drainage been considered. Drainage, where practical, has been achieved through the drilling of holes forward into the coal and the surrounding strata from the working area. These holes generally have been short in length, although where methane drain- age operations around a longwall face have been undertaken, the holes have had to be longer in order to adequately drain from the center of the face into the access gate roads. In recent years, attempts have been made to degasify the coal seams in advance of mining, without disruption of the mining cycle. This is done by drilling much longer horizontal holes through the coal in advance of the working area. Under the aegis of the Federal Government, methods have also been developed for draining seams of coal of their methane content in advance of mining, but from shafts sunk from the surface, without using the active area of the mine as the location for the drill holes.

Adequate understanding of the subsurface conditions along the alignment of a planned tunnel is key for managing project risk. For achieving this understanding, geotechnical borings are conducted during design. Where their spacing cannot reduce the risk of encountering differing site conditions (DSC) in-between borings to an acceptable level, supplemental exploration methodologies or data evaluation approaches may be required to bridge the data gap. This paper compares the exploration design approaches of recent tunnel boring machine (TBM) and microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) projects in the quaternary deposits along the Eastern Seaboard, the glacial geology of the Pacific Northwest, the sedimentary rocks of the South, and metamorphic rocks in western Germany, describing their respective effectiveness of managing DSC risk.

Truck fleet dispatching plays a crucial role in reducing operational costs and fulfilling operational targets in open-pit mining operations and is subject to large uncertainty arising from the operating cycles of trucks and loading equipment. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based truck dispatching system. Reinforcement learning is a machine learning area that deals with learning an optimal sequential decision-making strategy in an uncertain environment. An open-pit load-and-haul simulation is developed that also captures the truck movements and interactions in the shared road network, and a Neural Network is successfully trained to suggest truck dispatching decisions in a real-time manner.

Longwall coal mines are frequently located in steep mountainous areas with narrow valleys. In order to protect surrounding watersheds and residential structures, support areas are left under the valleys. However, the indirect subsidence effects to the residential structures due to the potential topography effects can be a serious problem. The present study examines a longwall mine in southern West Virginia located in an area with an average slope of about 30°, or 58%, and with an overburden depth that varies from 49 to 376 m (160 to 1,235 ft). A comprehensive investigation was carried out to assess the subsidence and topography effects, as well as other ground control issues at this site. Surface and subsurface movements and deformation were predicted and their direct effects on nearby streams and structures were assessed. The potential and indirect subsidence influences of surface topography effects were assessed. The techniques and results of this investigation are presented in this paper. It shows that the direct and indirect subsidence effects on the streams and residential structures should be insignificant. The post-mining observations agreed well with this study.

The quantum of coal fines below 6 mm in run-of-mine (ROM) coal has been increasing due to progressive mechanization of mining methods which has created a substantial incentive, worldwide, to develop suitable fine coal beneficiation techniques. The majority of the efforts have been directed toward reduction in ash/sulfur contents in clean coal. The beneficiation techniques may be broadly grouped as those based on specific gravity and surface property. The processes, which use heavy medium cyclone, water-only cyclone, concentrating tables, and spirals, belong to the former group while the latter group encompasses froth flotation, column flotation, oleo- flotation, and oil agglomeration. In almost all the gravity based techniques, it has been noted that a classification step prior to beneficiation is essential for effective treatment. In general, the effect of design and process variables on the performance of these units and also the quantification of the processes have been the main areas of research and development. In froth flotation, efforts throughout the world have been mainly to understand the effect of variables and to optimize the process. Quantification of the process has been attempted through kinetic studies and mathematical modeling. The efforts have led to the development of new reagents, machine designs, and flowsheets for a specified objective. The attempts so far with the column flotation and oleoflotation processes have indicated a great potential. Extensive R&D efforts are in progress to understand as well as to commercialize the processes. The efforts in the oil agglomeration process have been toward substantiating the inherent merits of the process by developing cheaper bridging liquids and technology to recover and reuse the oil to make the process commercially viable. Modeling of the process has also been attempted to predict the yield and size distribution of the agglomerates. This paper reviews and summarizes the recent developments in the science and technology of fine coal beneficiation processes. The current trends in R%D efforts for these processes are also highlighted.

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. Silverton was the queen city of the western mining towns in the early 1900s. Located high in the San Juan Mountains, the town constantly grew and changed. Yet, it was subject to the vagaries and whims of economics, politics and disasters, natural or otherwise. Breweries, smelters and sawmills serviced Silverton's swelling mining population, which reached several thousand at its peak. Two trains a day ran from Durango to Silverton, in addition to trains running from Silverton over the top of Red Mountain on to Ironton. They ran up Cement Creek to the little town of Gladstone and up the Animas River Valley to Howardsville, Eureka and Animas Forks. During these prosperous times, construction flourished. There were plenty of wooden structures, and many of these stand today. The first brick buildings were built by bricklayer Patrick Stanley in 1877. It took quite a while for the first car to arrive. Almost 28 years passed from the coming of the first train to the arrival of the first car. It was brought over 3,840-m (12,600-ft) Stony Pass from Creede, CO, in an incredible journey retold years later by Louis Wyman. "Dad's daydreams were not the idle musings or the fantasies of a mystic," Wyman said. "They had a way of erupting into reality. He advocated and built good roads," he said. "During the summer of 1910, he was up to his sweatband in a project that took in half the state of Colorado. He envisioned an automobile highway, unheard of at that time, running southwest from Denver through the scenic grandeur of the high Colorado Rockies. The road would traverse a thousand miles or more of the state's finest recreational land finally circling back to Denver. Years later, when all of the county roads had been connected, it became known as 'Colorado's Thousand-Mile Circle Route.' Of course, Silverton and the San Juans were bright stars along the way."

All of the major raw materials (silica, soda ash, limestone, and feldspar) needed to manufacture most grades of glass are found in Wyoming. Additional advantages for the manufacture of glass include the state's geographic location, a well-developed transportation network, a favorable tax structure (no corporate or personal-income tax), and low energy costs. Inadequate local markets and prohibitive transportation costs to other markets have been the major obstacles to developing a glass industry in Wyoming, the least- populated state in the nation. The Rocky Mountain region only recently became a major market for glass, especially for the Colorado Front Range and Utah's Wasatch Front. Currently, changing costs of the production of glass, an increased market for con- tainer glass in the Colorado Front Range, and innovative production and transportation ideas (e.g., production of selected types of glass and bulk shipments of specification-glass pellets) favor developing a glass plant in Wyoming. Thus, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) and other state agencies have been conducting studies and contacting investors in an effort to attract a glass-manufacturing plant to the state. Between 1987 and 1993, three locations of silica-sand and -rock deposits were studied in Wyoming (Cassa, Plumbago Creek, and John Blue). Funding was provided by the WSGS operating budget and local and state Department of Commerce economic- development grants. The reports on these areas were released between 1988 and 1993. In 1988-89, a California-based company conducted additional drilling and feasibility studies and prepared to construct a glass plant in Cheyenne, using the Cassa silica source. However, due to losses incurred by some of their other investments, the company did not proceed. In 1997, the Wyoming Science, Technology, and Energy Administration (STEA) contracted a market study for glass manufactured in Wyoming, using information provided by the WSGS. The STEA contacted several major glass producers, and a major glass-producing company began feasibility studies in January 1998, for the construction of a glass plant. In June 1998, bids to supply brown beer bottles to the Budweiser brewery northeast of Fort Collins, Colorado, were submitted by at least two companies that were considering glass-plant sites in Wyoming.

Natural cold seepages are characterized as rapid upward transports of methane from deeper parts of geological structures to the seafloor. Thermogenic and/or biogenic methane generated in deep sediments moves up to seafloor, and major part of methane is consumed in anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and hydrogen sulfide is created in anaerobic sulfate reduction by consortium of microorganisms. Then the hydrogen sulfide is utilized by chemosynthetic communities near the seafloor, such as Acharax, Calyptogena, Bathymodiolus, and the mat-forming bacteria Beggiatoa (Fig. 1). When the supply of methane is large or rapid, remaining methane escapes from seafloor, and it is aerobically oxidized in seawater. A mass balance ecosystem model of chemosynthetic community around natural cold seepages in sediment layer and on seafloor has been created and improved by the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2005; Takeuchi et al., 2007). The model is constructed from 3 main processes as schematically shown in Fig. 2: (1) Methane supply process; (2) Ecosystem process; (3) Water column process. The part of chemosynthetic communities is in the ecosystem process. A numerical model CANDI (Carbon And Nutrient Diagenesis) was developed by Boudreau (1996) to simulate the biogeochemical processes such as organic matter, oxidant, nutrient, bi-product, and pH diagenesis in aquatic surface sediments. Then, the improved version named C. CANDI was developed (Luff and Wallmann, 2003; Luff et al., 2004). The authors created the same type carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model with calcium carbonate formation like C. CANDI (Yamazaki et al., 2005), and have added the sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes (Takeuchi et al., 2007). The sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes are connected with the carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model.

Fall of ground is a leading source of worker injury and fatality indicating a persistent need for ground monitoring technology. The HRTMM is an experimental convergence monitor utilizing a digital camera and custom software to track the position of one or more lasers across the target. Apparent laser movement is proportional to target convergence. The HRTMM was installed in an underground mine near active operations to test its response to the mining environment. This included intense blasting vibration and mine fog. Results and potential of the new monitoring technology will be discussed.

Historically two basic approaches of production sequencing have been formed in the theory of open pit mine design. The first approach implements a technological discretization of the pit space within the ultimate pit outlines where the minimum working width is the limiting technological factor. The second approach uses a pseudo-economic discretization based on the implementation of analytical methods for designing intermediate/ultimate pit outlines and the concept of pit shells generation. The paper offers an elaborate analysis of both approaches used currently for discretization of the geological medium into working benches and modelling the working zone of open pit mine. The analysis is extended with a new vision for unification of the mining systems in open pit mine design under the form of a classification. A comparison of the approaches is provided to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages with regard to the implementation of the principle of waste deferment as one of the main principles of mine planning that exploits the time effect of money.

Once considered the dowdy country cousins of the glamorous metallics, industrial minerals are shedding their old image. They are neither common nor easy and their time has come in an age of increasing specialization. Consider that of the 45 or so industrial minerals and rocks listed in [Table 1], almost three-quarters have ten or fewer significant suppliers (i.e., those individual countries contributing 2% or more of total world production); in more than half the cases, 85% of world production is accounted for by only five countries or fewer. Curiously, even materials that appear to be virtually ubiquitous like crushed rock and common salt have significant production vacuums. For example, there is a severe lack of sound aggregates along the US Gulf Coast and common salt production on a large scale is virtually absent in central Africa. These examples all underline the obvious, but acute truism that "The single most important fact about mineral resources is that they are not distributed equally over the world" (Flawn, 1966). Just as significant today is that human resources are not distributed equally over the world, and so arise some interesting commercial incongruities. In certain regions raw materials are plentiful but consumers are not, and without a market a mineral deposit is merely a geological curiosity. Elsewhere, there may be a market but no local raw material supply. For example, despite a huge market there is no or virtually no commercial production of chromite, diamonds, and manganese in the United States and Canada, nor phosphate rock, diamonds, rutile, and zirconium minerals in western Europe. In contrast, Australia with its small domestic market is the world's largest supplier of bauxite, diamonds, ilmenite, natural and synthetic rutile, and zircon; the same is true for South Africa which is a leading producer of chromite, manganese, diamonds, andalusite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon (Table 2). In the commercial world, Nature's uneven distribution is counterbalanced by deep sea international trade.

Grinding circuits employed in mineral processing operations are designed to produce feed materials for beneficiation steps such as flotation and magnetic separation, which are sufficiently fine to achieve good liberation of valuable minerals from gangue without over- grinding. In many respects, grinding is the most important unit operation in a mineral processing plant. If adequate liberation is not achieved during grinding, subsequent separation steps will yield low metallurgical recoveries and/or product grades. Grinding energy requirements and operating costs typically exceed 50% of the total expenditures of the entire plant. Because grinding is an inherently energy intensive process and grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high, it is essential that such circuits be run as efficiently as possible. In- creased efficiency in grinding usually translates to a decrease in the energy required to produce a metric ton (short ton) of product size material. It is generally accepted in the mineral industry that efficient grinding circuit performance can not be achieved without the use of some form of automatic control. This is true because all circuits are subject to random disturbances which, if left unchecked, will upset circuit performance and rob a plant of productivity. Such disturbances arise from a variety of sources including natural variations in ore characteristics (particularly hardness changes), uncontrolled water additions, feed-rate upsets, changes in crusher performance, and mechanical upsets such as blockages in pumps and classifiers. Many of these disturbances occur with a frequency which is too high for an operator to detect and react to efficiently. Disturbances which occur on a time scale of several minutes up to several hours can be effectively dealt with using automatic control.

INTRODUCTION Since the nineteen fifties, process engineers have been seriously concerned with process models for various purposes (1,2,3). Models serve as subroutines to mathematical flowsheets which simulate circuits of interest. Simulators can serve to increase process know- ledge, assess circuit performance, investigate flowsheet modifications, evaluate new flowsheets, perform off-line optimization, and compare alternative control strategies. This chapter describes a methodology to develop a simulator of a bulk Cu-Mo circuit comprised of roughers, scavengers and 3 stages of cleaning. The simulator was employed to evaluate the influence of water addition at circuit points and to estimate the optimal number of cells for each stage in the circuit. DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the Brenda Mines Ltd. (located near Peachland, B. C.) bulk Cu-Mo flotation circuit as simulated prior to an expansion/renovation which involved the installation of large, new flotation cells. Referring to the flowsheet, feed to rougher cells includes fresh feed, scavenger concentrate and 1st cleaner tailing. Rougher con, 1st cleaner (sect ion 2) con and 2nd cleaner tailing are fed to 1st cleaners (section 1). 1st cleaner (section 1) concentrate and 3rd cleaner tailing serve as 2nd cleaner feed, while 2nd cleaner concentrate is fed to the 3rd cleaners which produce a final bulk concentrate. Table 1 lists cell types and specifications important to the circuit. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS To develop flotation cell models a systematic procedure was employed (4). This involves the selection of responses and factors, proposing models to be fitted, the acquisition of raw data, the statistical adjustment of raw data, fitting models to adjusted data and testing the adequacy of fitted functions. Responses and Factors Responses of interest included recoveries, concentrate grades and concentrate solids/water flow rates for each stage. Factors that influence these responses, such as reagent addition rates, air flow rates to cells, solids and water flow rates to stages and feed grades were not manipulated during the sampling period. This paper discusses grade control of ore mined at Tennessee Copper Company. Mineral zoning and the influence of mineral zoning on production grade are discussed and illustrated. In order to make this most understandable we will first briefly examine the flow sheet at Tennessee Copper to indicate the path followed by the raw material toward its various products. Then we will discuss some of the characteristics of the ore, specifically the distribution or zoning of the minerals in the ore which cause some of the grade control problems. Finally we Will discuss same of the steps that are taken to combat these problems. The flow sheet is illustrated as plate 1. The mined ore is allied to obtain 3 usable products: Copper concentrate, iron concentrate and zinc concentrate. Copper is found in the mineral chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. The Copper concentrate from the mill contains about 20% copper. These concentrates are smelter in reverberatory furnace and Pierce-Smith converter to blister copper containing 99.2% copper. Some metal is cast into 360 lb. pigs and shipped to the refinery. Some is made into shot copper and used locally to make copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is marketed from Copperhill principally in fungicides.

Long-term monitoring is necessary to successfully develop predictive subsidence models. Thus, the Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program (IMSRP) has documented subsidence over a longwall mine in south-central Illinois throughout a 3-year period. No monitoring results of this duration have been previously published for longwall mining in Illinois. To study the effects of surface subsidence and the rate of subsidence, precise level surveying was conducted at the site two or three times a year. Level surveys were conducted at approximately the same time of year using a WILD NA-2 level with a micrometer. Second-Order, Class-I, closure errors were obtained in each survey. Survey monuments were designed to minimize frost-induced movements. At this particular site in southern Illinois, subsidence over chain pillars and the panel centerline continued 3 years after mining. Since mining in 1988, 6.67 feet of subsidence or 70% of the extracted height has been documented over the panel centerline, with almost 0.30 feet in the last two years. The area over the chain pillars has subsided a total of 1.44 feet, with 0.44 feet occurring within the last 2 years. Monitoring over the chain pillars and at the centerline shows the residual subsidence to be fairly uniform. Monitoring is continuing over both of these areas. Long-term monitoring data can be used to improve evaluation of subsidence effects on land and structures. However, coal companies will time mitigation activities depending on other factors including the threshold of structural damage, type of repair needed, and maintenance of landowner and company relations.

"SummaryFor more than a century, ground freezing has been a construction technique used in stabilization of ground by means of lowering the temperature of surrounding soil strata. This technique is used in circumstances where conventional grouting method is unable to achieve the degree of consolidation required to prevent settlement and water ingress during the execution of underground excavation. Whilst ground freezing is effective in imparting self-supporting characteristics to the excavation profile, it poses significant challenges when it comes to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) where sprayed concrete is used to support the freshly excavated ground. Sprayed concrete, if used in an appropriate manner, provides a fast, efficient and structurally-reliable means of supporting the structure, especially in underground construction. The evolvement in sprayed concrete technology is attributed to the development of concrete know-how, improvement of spraying technique with the use of automation spraying equipment, more in-depth understanding of sprayed concrete behavior and enhancement of materials used in production of high quality sprayed concrete Not only has this markedly escalated the prominence of sprayed concrete on wider perspective,. the positive development has also pushed sprayed concrete beyond its boundaries, enabling it to be embarked on area of application not considered possible decades ago. Nevertheless, sprayed concrete, for all its placement versatility, still depends largely on the technicality provision very similar to concrete to achieve the required quality. Parameters such as raw material grading composition, curing temperature and cement quality are some of the factors that can easily sway the quality of concrete from one extreme to another. Conducive ambient temperature is critical in ensuring optimum hydration of concrete. This is more important in sprayed concrete where temperature plays a pivotal role in influencing the early strength and long term strength development. The low temperature imposed by ground freezing is everything but ideal for competent hydration to take place. This paper outlines how the innovative use of sprayed concrete helps to overcome the adverse ambient temperature in the construction of a 110m underground pedestrian walkway utilizing ground freezing technique in Hong Kong."

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has undertaken the Lake Mathews Outlet Facilities project to replace the existing outlet facilities. In the late1990s, consulting engineers for the District determined that the Lake Mathews Outlet Facilities were susceptible to a catastrophic failure during a seismic event. To ensure a reliable supply of water to Metropolitan’s customers in the Los Angeles area, the District decided to construct new outlet facilities. This Project consists of excavating a large diameter junction shaft, a 6.10 m (20 ft.) horseshoe tunnel, three short 4.88 m(16 ft.) horseshoe bypass tunnels, and a large excavation within a cofferdam that were all driven in difficult rock conditions. Additionally, a new concrete outlet tower was constructed and connected to the existing tunnel by the new bypass tunnels and through the junction shaft. The J.F. Shea Co., Inc. of Walnut, California, is currently finishing the construction of the Lake Mathews Outlet Facilities Project for Metropolitan. The large diameter junction shaft is 50.60 m (166 ft.) deep, excavated 16.15 m (52 ft.) in diameter and lined with a61 cm (2´-0?) thick steel reinforced concrete lining to a finished diameter of 14.63 m (48ft.). The shaft was excavated full face with one stationary shaft three-boom jumbo, modified for the large diameter. The shaft also consists of four sets of gate guides extruding from the shaft wall towards the center of the shaft that provide the ability to operate up to four mechanical gates at any time, to open or close each tunnel. This paper will present the junction shaft excavation and concrete construction techniques, including the innovative slip form method utilized to construct the junction shaft.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers.
