The topic of this paper is to demonstrate the development of mobile crushing installations from throughput capacities of 200 tons per hour, to mobile and semi-mobile large- scale crushing installations with throughput capacities of 3,500 up to 10,000 tons per hour. Basis are approximately 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations which have been built since 1956 or were on order in 1987. [FIGURE 1. Total Number of Mobile or Semi-mobile Crushing Plants] Sixteen of these approximate 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations have a throughput higher than 3,500 metric tons per hour. Mobile crushers were developed more than 25 years ago in Europe for the quarry industry, which had special requirements - fairly low capacity, mostly softer and less abrasive material (limestone) and full mobility. So the majority of the units up to about 1980 were fully mobile, having a fairly small capacity and utilizing mainly hammermills, double roll and impact crushers. It was only when the mining industry and large quarries picked up the concept in the early 1980's that a drastic increase in capacity took place. Even though the first mobile crusher in a true mining application went into service in 1971, it took another 10 years before it proceeded in a larger scale. This trend was obviously supported by the drastic fuel price and energy cost increase in the mid 70's. Since the cost of conveying material is substantially cheaper than trucking it, the increase in energy cost, combined with increasing haulage distances provided a strong incentive. Figure 1 shows clearly the throughput distribution of all crushing installations and it also shows the sharp increase in the throughput capacities within the last few years.

Long-term production scheduling design is a very important part of mining because it determines the economic outcome of a project There have been many attempts to solve the optimum pit scheduling problem, but there has been no success in developing a scheduling method to give optimum results in maximizing net present value of a mining project. Open pit production scheduling problem can be formulated as a mathematical programming problem and solved using Mixed Integer Programming technique. However, it is not possible to solve the formulation within a reasonable time since the number of integer variables required for the mathematical model is too great to do that by today's available computer technology. There- fore, a methodology is required to combine, or aggregate, the mining blocks and to decrease the number of integer variables in scheduling without losing the optimality. Therefore, the fundamental tree concept was developed in this paper to combine the blocks. A fundamental tree is defined as any combination of blocks such that: 1. the blocks can be profitably mined, 2. the blocks obey the slope constraints and, 3. there is no subset of the chosen blocks that meets 1 and 2. A Linear Programming (LP) formulation is developed as a mathematical model to find a set of fundamental trees that exist for a deposit. Since the blocks are combined to form the fundamental trees, the number of variables required for the scheduling model is decreased significantly. This decrease in the number of variables makes it possible to mathematically formulate the multi-time period scheduling problem as a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model. A case study is performed on a multi-mineral copper deposit in Peru, South America. NPVs of annual after-tax cash flows generated based on the schedule provided by the "Fundamental Tree Algorithm" is compared with NPVs resulted from the schedules coming from three of the computer packages presently available to the mining industry. These are Mintec's M821V, Earth- work's NPV Scheduler, and Whittle's Milava open pit mine schedulers.

In the mining and processing industry, the maintenance plan has often evolved rather than being consciously set up resulting in an overreliance on breakdown and fixed-time maintenance (planned maintenance). Historically mining and processing plant equipment has been robust and less automated than modem equipment, making it relatively easy to work on. Mining and processing plants have relied on large and expensive maintenance departments to enable rapid attention to breakdowns. Maintenance itself can result in excessive downtime and costs. This results from the requirement to take the machinery off-line to carry out (possibly unnecessary and invasive) maintenance. The danger of infant mortality after it has been put back on line again and also the cost of the maintenance action itself contributes to costs. A goal of any well-run maintenance program is to have the lowest cost while providing 100% capacity 100% of the time to operations. When maintenance investments are at a minimum, the cost of lost production is at its highest. As maintenance effort and investments are intelligently increased, the production loss gradually decreases until the lowest combined cost is achieved. This is the maintenance goal. A road map is needed to achieving maintenance excellence. This article addresses a "Road Map" to achieving maintenance excellence. Table I contains the production figures for each of these commodities in the United States and the world. Specifications for concentrates or final mineral product are also summarized as well as prim for them at the time the section was written. In each chapter an attempt has been made to provide the reader with information on the common commercial mineral or minerals involved with the commodity, some of the uses. the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these process are utilized.

Introduction Project scheduling . . . . • What is it? • Why is it done? • Who does it? • How is it done? • When is it done? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this paper. It is intended that by exploring these questions, an understanding of project scheduling, its purpose and benefits can be achieved. The purpose of this article is not to describe in detail "how to schedule", but rather to give an overview of the scheduling function on a project. A successful scheduling effort is dependent upon the people responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the schedule, and the tools and procedures that are used. These three elements are integral components of project scheduling. What is it? A schedule is the integration of network relationships, resource constraints and the calendar. The schedule identifies when the activities "will" be done, while the network states when they "must" be done. Networking techniques are the most widely accepted scheduling tool for complex projects. The benefit of the network is the simplicity in illustrating, presenting and analyzing the dependency relationships of a project. The logic network is the foundation of the schedule. When calendar dates are applied to the logic network, it becomes a schedule which provides the basis for evaluation of project status, forecasting the occurrence of events and controlling the project. The sequence of activities that requires the longest time to complete determines the overall duration of the schedule. This longest sequence of activities is called the "critical path". The "critical path method" (CPM) is used to describe this particular schedule network methodology. The two common conventions of CPM networks are the "arrow diagram met hod" (ADM) and the "precedence diagram method" (PIM). There are arguments in favor of each of these two methods, and usually the one that is used is a matter of personal preference, project directive or corporate procedure.

The Clean Water Act, as administered by the Environmental Protection Agency, has mandated industry, government and the public to comply with potentially conflicting and vague water quality statutes, regulations and guidelines. Universal regulatory strategies have been developed which have introduced and have created regulatory, compliance and institutional conflicts. Conflicts have been created because National water quality performance goals and design standards are vague, and, in many cases, cannot be scientifically justified. Because of regulatory technical requirements to define background and environmentally impacted water quality characteristics, the ability to achieve regulatory compliance is difficult. Difficult issues requiring resolutions includes but are not limited to site specific surface and ground water quality classification systems, water quality standards and guidelines, point and non point pollution sources etc. Because of these statutory and regulatory complexities, a confrontational regulatory system has been created as it relates to: - defining performance criteria in relation to design criteria; - resolving water quality statistical compliance conflicts; - defining laboratory precision requirements; - determining background groundwater characteristics; and - locating a representative point of compliance. Because of these complex regulatory issues, the ability to balance goals, needs and economics has not been achieved or in many cases has not been attempted, without legal intervention. A few examples illustrating where water and waste management compliance conflicts have been experienced.

Agriculture in the United States today is becoming more and more a business, rather than a way of life. In the light of this, it behooves the farm-supply industries that provide the American farmer with his tools of production--feed, fertilizer, machinery, and the like--to give even greater attention than they have in the past to meeting the needs of the farmer-businessmen they are serving. Increasing competition among the companies that make up these industries merely accentuates this need for better service. An opportunity for such improved service, not yet fully realized, exists in the fertilizer industry today. That opportunity lies in the increased transportation of fertilizer ingredients by water. However, before the benefits inherent in this increased water movement of fertilizers can be fully realized, certain obstacles must be met and overcome. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the nature and magnitude of this opportunity, to point out some of the roadblocks and the steps that can be, or are being, taken to remove them, and to indicate some of the rewards that would logically stem from success in these efforts.

The Vesta Preparation Plant of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation is located on the Monongahela River, eight miles south of Brownsville, Pennsylvania. This plant is capable of cleaning 2400 NT/hr of a mixture of Pittsburgh seam high volatile coals from the Vesta and Shannopin mines to produce a metallurgical coal of 6.75% ash and a steam coal containing 14% ash. Heavy media vessels are utilized to upgrade the coarse coal while launders and tables. handle the -1/4" fraction of the raw coal feed. Cleaned -coal goes to boot classifiers where the +48 mesh material settles and is removed by bucket elevators. This 1/4 x 48 mesh material is then sent to centrifugal driers for dewatering. As designed, the minus 48 mesh fraction overflows the boot as a 7 to 8% solids slurry and is recovered by cyclones and a thickener and dewatered by filtration. The-products of the heavy media circuit, the launder-table-boot-drier circuit and the cyclone-thickener-filter circuit are combined to constitute the shipped metallurgical coal. This Vesta-Shannopin mix is combined at J&L's Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works with purchased low and medium volatile coals for the production of metallurgical coke.

Uranium exploration in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming has been intensive since 1966 and in 1968 produced significant discoveries of reduced uranium ore by Humble Oil & Refining Company and others. Substantial reserves have been established in the area. High-grade carnotite ore was discovered in 1951 near Pumpkin Buttes in the central part of the basin (Fig. 1). Other mineralized areas were soon established from Pumpkin Buttes south to Monument Hill and Box Creek. Total production from these shallow oxidized deposits in the lower Eocene Wasatch formation was small. The AEC reports total production of 520,000 tons of ore averaging 0.19% U3O8. The authors are indebted to many people within Humble Oil & Refining Company and Esso Production Research Company for their assistance and guidance. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS The Highland ore deposit, discovered in 1968, is a large uranium occurrence located in the southern part of the Powder River Basin. Uranium mineralization consists of sooty, black uraninite and coffinite coating sand grains and is concentrated along the margins of Tertiary fluvial sandstones. Uranium was transported by oxidizing solutions roving through the buried sandstones and spreading into less permeable channel-edge sandstones to form typical rolls and tabular deposits. Unaltered sandstones are light gray to gray-buff where the sandstones have been oxidized, the colors are various shades of red, yellow, and yellowish brown. An Oligocene tuffaceous source for the uranium is proposed; however, leaching of the arkosic and tuffaceous host sediments may also have provided a source.

"Experience from Australia has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence”, and far-field horizontal movements – even occurring beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behaviour recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 – 720ft. Investigations (including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program) found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and far-field horizontal movements may have occurred resulting from the adjacent mining. The paper discusses the phenomenon of non-conventional subsidence behaviour and the Ryerson State Park case study, including an assessment of mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioural mechanisms. INTRODUCTION Non-Conventional Subsidence The conventional understanding of coal mine subsidence on which most current subsidence understanding and prediction techniques are based, includes the concept of angle of draw which effectively limits the lateral extent of subsidence effects and impacts. Within this zone – above and marginally beyond the boundary of mining – downward vertical subsidence is the dominant component, together with localised horizontal movements towards the mined region, with related tilts and strains. However, more recent experience from Australia over the last two or three decades has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This is found to occur in areas of irregular surface topography or variable terrain, and is characterised by phenomena such as valley closure, valley floor uplift or upsidence, and far-field horizontal movements, all of which can occur beyond the conventional angle of draw limits. A study has been made of the reaction mechanisms occurring during the salt-roast process to form water-soluble sodium vanadate compounds from the vanadium oxide compounds present in vanadium-bearing ores and concentrates. Two reactions have been identified, either of which lead to water-soluble compounds--oxidation of sodium chloride by water vapor and. oxidation of sodium chloride by oxygen. The former reaction has been found to be predominant in the salt-roast process. A kinetic treatment of the data has shown that for the formation of sodium metavanadate the rate-controlling step in the reaction, in which sodium chloride is oxidized by water vapor is the decomposition of a species containing water and sodiumm chloride, on the surface at the gas-solid interface. For the formation of sodium pyrovanadate, the rate-controlling step is the decomposition of a species containing water and sodium metavaradate on the surface. The transportation of water through the system, perhaps as a sodium chloride-water complex or a sodium metavanadate-water complex, and the actual chemical reaction are relatively fast compared to the initial surface decomposition step. A similar treatment on the data for the oxidation, of sodium chloride by oxygen has shown that the rate-controlling step, is the actual transportation of oxygen from the gas-solid interface to the reactive site. This transportation is by a sequence of two diffusion processes. Transportation during the early stages of the reaction is by the diffusion of oxygen through a continuous layer of reaction product. After, the first few minutes of reaction time a second diffusion process begins and is continuous for the remainder of the reaction. This second diffusion process involves the diffusion of oxygen, through a layer of reaction product that has developed voids around which the oxygen must diffuse. The hindering, nature of this latter process causes the rate of transportation of oxygen to the reaction site to be considerably slower than by the simple diffusion mechanism initially followed. A thermodynamic treatment of the data has shown that the energy of activation for the decomposition of the water-sodium chloride species on the surface is -12.1 Kcal. per mole. For the decomposition of the water-sodium metavanadate species on the surface' the energy of activation is -15.1 Kcal. per mole. The results of this study indicate the limiting mechanisms of the basic reactions occurring during the salt-roast process. These results suggest what variables should be examined in applying this information to actual plant operations.

Before we can attempt to answer the question of what can be expected from coal research, let us examine why research is done in other fields and what others expect for the money they spend on research and development. Up to 1900 almost all organized research was carried out at universities. Most of the support came from the university, and by present standards the amount of research was extremely small. The motivation for university research was basically discovery of new phenomena, with the objective of advancing knowledge. Side by, side with this organized effort was that of individual inventors who were primarily responsible for applying this new-found knowledge to useful purposes. During this period inventors were rarely supported by anyone, and experimentation was carried out either in their spare time or at the expense of earning a living. Men like Edison, I believe, were the first to demonstrate on a large scale that one could systematically apply newly discovered scientific principles to inventions that would serve useful purposes and would return a profit to those engaged in the effort. The tremendous expansion in research therefore began with the realization and demonstration that the scientific discovered could be applied in such a way as to return a' handsome profit to those who invested in it. The motivation of many of the research personnel however, remained the satisfaction associated with new discoveries, The money to support their efforts came from those interested in a return on their investments. Since the First World War and a rapidly accelerating rate since the Second World War another important motive for supporting research has appeared--the needs associated with national defense; this type of research has been supported almost exclusively by the Government.

In world-wide mining circles countries become known by the principal minerals they produce. The production of iron, copper, phosphate and sulphur in the United-States-has-been particularly significant and has provided the base for aggressive developments in heavy industry, agriculture and chemicals. Mention diamonds and gold-and you will think--South Africa; silver-Mexico; nickel and asbestos--Canada. The main purpose of this paper is to point out that potash mast be added to the list of minerals by which Canada is known in the mining World. The potash deposits of western Canada must be classed as a major world source of chemical fertilizer raw material. We believe that they are both the largest and the richest of all known deposits in the world. The most knowledgeable people in the industry avoid making estimates of reserves because even where the arithmetic is correct the total is so large that it appears to be ridiculous. In 1957 Marion Goudie made a carefully qualified estimate of 6 billion tons of recoverable potash above 3,500 ft, and grading 25 per cent K20 or better. This figure can now be increased by the amounts available through solution mining. No one has bothered to estimate how much this is because it is so large that the actual amount is not significant.

This paper presents a new algorithm for solving the Controlled Flow Mine Ventilation Problem in an optimal manner - minimum power consumption. The use of booster fans and restrictions on the locations of ventilation regulators are dealt with in a straightforward manner. This new approach is based on a common Operations Research algorithm for which there are many fast computer programs available.

In recent years increasing attention has been given to improving both the chemical and physical properties of sinter. The first step toward this goal was the production of a self-fluxing-sinter. More recently, blast-furnace operators have found that significant improvements in blast-furnace performance can be achieved by improving and controlling the physical size of the sinter. The results of full-scale blast-furnace tests have shown that blast-furnace production can be improved by using a closely sized agglomerate. The improvements obtained by the use of pellets, a closely sized agglomerate, are well known. In contrast, blast furnaces charged with sinter having a wide size spectrum have generally not yielded results as satisfactory as those from furnaces 1) * charged with pellets. Beginning in 1958, Appleby-Frodingham charged plus 3/8-inch sinter to their blast furnaces. Further tests by other companies in Canada, 2) the United States, 3) and Australia showed that blast-furnace production could be improved by about one percent when the plus 3/8-inch material in the burden was increased by one percent. Because of the promising results obtained with screened sinter, an extensive test program was initiated to determine an effective means of producing sized sinter in U. S. Steel's sinter plants. This paper describes the work done by the Applied Research Laboratory in this program.

The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

To mine safely and efficiently the working conditions must be systematically de¬fined. Their uniqueness distinguishes mining from other engineering professions. The worst case in underground mining is delineated and termed "encumbered space'", since it "seriously impedes motion or action." Working space is inherently hazardous, transitory, and expensive, inducing it to be of low quality, tight and congested, vulnerable and deteriorating, and isolated and inaccessible. These adverse conditions, are damaging to cumbersome, mobile equipment, and affect all activities, including surface work. The conditions are reorganized using the fundamental engineering dimensions: space, matter time, people, and money. Comprehensive tables are presented with attention paid to "disaster potentials". Examples are cited.

Mine planning at Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) Glenharold Mine in North Dakota is being constrained by environ¬mental concerns that did not exist when the mine opened in 1965. One such concern which developed in the mid-1970's is the impact of mining on woodlands that are considered impor¬tant wildlife habitat. To better coordinate mine planning with permitting, a cooperative task force was created to evaluate woodlands for their wild¬life habitat potential. The task force included representatives from Consol and state and federal agencies. This cooperative process is seen as a method of communication between industry and government and as a way of developing decision-making tools for mine planners and regulatory agencies.
