In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Flowsheets of typical U.S. cement plants are shown in Chapter 13. Chemical Composition and Physical Properties It is generally accepted that portland cement clinker consists of a mixture of compounds or synthetic minerals. The four principal compounds are:

In this chapter, the principles that determine the procedures selected to transform minerals in the ground into usable commodities are re¬viewed.a I argue here that straightforward mod¬ification of the modern general economic theory of production suffices to meet the practical needs of a mineral economist. Therefore, the chapter is largely a review of the general economic theory of production to which is added discussion of the special prob¬lems of the exhaustibility of mineral resources and the economics of finding and developing economically recoverable minerals. In many cases, propositions applicable to all industries are reviewed because they are not treated ade¬quately in prior texts. In the discussion, use is frequently made of basic concepts of differential calculus widely used in economics. However, this is supple¬mented by simpler verbal and graphical treat¬ments, so that those either untrained in the calculus or, as is often the case, whose skills have grown rusty, can still follow the discus¬sion. Where the argument depends critically on the mathematics, this is noted and the justifi¬cation for including the material is provided. In addition, an appendix outlines the critical mathematics and reviews some of the numerous books published that provide the most readable available introduction to the subject. Further¬more, mineral industries examples are used to suggest the relevance of the theory. THE RELEVANCE OF THE ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION Three basic steps are involved in establishing the relevance of economic analysis to mineral ¬industries decision making. First, the general theory of production must be defined, and its relationship to the simpler models of production stressed in economics textbooks must be noted. Second, the critical modification-considera¬tion of the problems of discovering and devel¬oping mineral deposits-must be developed. It turns out this too involves a special case of the general theory of production. Third, the concept of an economics of exhaustible resources must be explored sufficiently to suggest why its practical relevance is doubtful (or at least far smaller than the numerous writers on the subject seem to believe). The present approach is heavily influenced by post-1945 developments in economic anal¬ysis. Particularly since World War II, economic theory has drastically changed its scope. First, stress has increased greatly upon viewing the economy as a network of intertwined markets known technically as the general equilibrium system.b In this view, not only is the economy viewed as an integrated system, but critical con¬cepts are viewed somewhat differently than was previously fashionable. The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.

The effects of particle size, particle shape and degree of aggregation on n-dodecylamine flotation of -20 µ m quartz and glass beads were studied. A microflotation cell suitable for use with very fine particles was used in the flotation experimentation. Degree of agglomeration of particles was estimated by comparing size distributions of the quartz and beads in a dispersed system to size distributions in systems in which the collector was present. Results obtained show that in such flotation systems the fine particles are not generally present as individual particles during flotation but rather as aggregations. However, the quartz floats more readily than the beads indicating that there are some shape effects in the systems, considering the large specific surface areas of the materials it also appears that substantial amine consumption in the systems may limit flotation or lead to a requirement of greater reagent dosage for equivalent flotation to that tor larger particles.

Signal Corps contracts beginning in 1946 with the Clevite Corporation (as the former Brush Development Company), Bell Telephone Laboratories, Antich College, and others. The technique of growing crystals from the melt, such as KI, NaBr, was already commercially inuse Quartz could not be so grown, since its utility depends on the form stable below 573°C, and, even if it could be grown from an extraordinarily viscous melt, the higher form passing through this transition becomes twinned. Again, several crystals were being grown commercially from water solutions; quartz, however, is listed in the common literature as being insoluble in water. Fused quartz, or vitreous silica, was chosen as raw mater¬ial by the European experimenters because of its thermodynamically lesser stability than quartz, and various alkaline solutions were tried for the purpose of enhancing the solubility.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels at Cyprus Sierrita. The predictive program was initiated by Cyprus Sierrita and P&H Mining Equipment at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine in Tucson, Arizona during August of 1996 on the P&H model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

This paper reported the calculation of the reaction heat in titanium-bearing blast furnace slag (abbreviated as TBFS)-H2SO4 system based on estimation of thermodynamic data of CaTiAl2O6 by mechanical mixture model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that CaTiAl2O6 was more stable than the corresponding ternary oxides as CaO·TiO2, CaO·Al2O3, and Al2O3·TiO2. TBFS-H2SO4 system was highly exothermic since all of the reactions involved in the system were exothermic. For example, the increase of temperature from 25 to 200°C led to the increase of the release of the reaction heat in TBFS (100.0g)-H2SO4 system from 181.28 to 189.73kJ. Eighty-five to 90%of the reaction heat in TBFS-H2SO4 system was contributed by the reactions among CaTiAl2O6, CaTiO3, CaMgSi2O6, and H2SO4.

"At a distance of 10 years from the first application of the Nazzano Method, the widening under traffic of a tube of an existing motorway tunnel was realized near Ancona, along the A14 Motorway in Italy. This paper describes the works for the enlargement with conventional method of the second tube, very close to that already widened under traffic.This enlargement was realized very fast, taking into account the advantages of some interesting technological improvements of the Final Design proved in the first tube.INTRODUCTION TO THE WIDENING OF EXISTING MOTORWAY TUNNELSThe widening of a twin-bore motorway tunnel usually considers the double option of creating a third bore as an alternative or closure to traffic of one of the two bores with the resulting reduction in the level of service for users.On the contrary, the extension in situ of a road, motorway, railway or underground tunnel in the presence of traffic, made possible by an inspired idea of Prof. Pietro Lunardi, enables the level of service of the infrastructure to be maintained without the need to resort to alternative routes to create new permanent or temporary bores, not always feasible because of the lack of the necessary space.This construction technique, known as the ‘Nazzano Method’, is part of the technologies refined and offered by the ADECO-RS approach to tunnel design and construction (Lunardi P., 2008) which is increasingly used in the world, leading to the industrialisation of tunnelling (meaning respect for the times and costs set out during detailed design) both in conventional and mechanised (through TBM) excavations.The first true experimentation of the ‘Nazzano Method’ was carried out between 2004 and 2007 to enlarge the two-bore ‘Nazzano’ tunnel (Italy, Milan-Rome A1 motorway) in the presence of traffic, widening it to house from two to four lanes in each direction (Lunardi P. et al., 2007). Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."

Geostatistical estimation techniques were customized to enable forecast of production figures at the Silver Bell uranium mine (Uravan District). Surface drill hole data were used to provide a block model of kriged estimators of average uranium grades. The recoverable figures, such as ore-waste ratio and ore grade, are then deduced from regressive curves previously obtained from underground information and production data. Cross-validations of the entire model were performed and were found positive.

This paper presents technical issues in the design and management of a retorted oil shale disposal site. Major physical and geochemical mechanisms which affect the disposal are: heat transport, moisture migration, chemical species transport, auto-ignition, and mechanical behavior alterations of the retorted oil shale pile. The interaction of these mechanisms and their relative magnitude will affect the environmental behavior of the pile. The paper discusses the coupling between the mechanisms, presents a framework to quantify the processes by laboratory and field measurements, and in addition discusses the use of mathematical models to provide quantitative predictions.

Excessive emissions of methane from the coal seams can have a serious adverse effect on both safety and productivity of longwall coal faces. Mechanization of coal faces has increased production possibilities to the extent that normal ventilation systems may not be able to ventilate coal face areas in order to lower methane content in the air to within legal limits. Production increases may therefore be prohibited for this reason, especially in gassy seams. Methane drainage from the coal seam by means of long holes and before production starts can act as a useful remedial action. In this paper a two dimensional mathematical model has been produced. The model that is based on finite elements, simulates a methane drainage system where the resultant risk is linked to the coefficient of diffusion, coal permeability, holes pattern and the duration for which the seam is subject to drainage. It is concluded that methane drainage of this type can assist in achieving production increases in many coals seems, especially where high gas content is a virtue of the seam.

"The process of coal mining, as indeed of the mining of any stratified mineral, is inevitably followed by some degree of sinking of the superjacent strata and consequently of the surface." Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence, Second and Final Report, London, 1927. INTRODUCTION The above statement was used to describe mining subsidence in the classic report of the "Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence," published in 1927. In fact, this phenomenon has been recognized in Britain since the early fifteenth century, as revealed from court records of disputes and litigations related to property damage above mine workings (Shadbolt, 1978). The first attempts to investigate and analyze the mechanisms associated with mining subsidence, however, date back to the 1800's and were pursued by Belgian Engineers. This research effort was initiated as a result of the widespread movements and subsequent structural damage suffered by the City of Liege in the 1820's. The most notable achievement of the Belgian school of that era was he publication of Gonot's treatise "Loie de la Normal" in 1871 (Gongt, 1871).

The block cave mining method utilized by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) generates fines and allows the inflow of water. Both constituents have contributed to unfavorable characteristics: an increase in ore material plasticity and fluidity. Unfavorable material needs to be monitored and managed as it passes from intermediate ore stockpiles through feeders and then to milling operations. We describe an implementation of several Video Data Analytics (VDA) algorithms on smart cameras to quantify the potential fluidity and plasticity by measuring the apparent velocity and agglomeration of material flowing through ore feeders. This approach to VDA on smart cameras is a cost effective, self-contained, solution to identify these unfavorable characteristics. The solution allows the operators to manage the related operational risks, maintain safe production and govern feeder rates when material is unfavorable, which is expected as PTFI proceeds deeper into the underground orebody

According to international projections and future energy scenarios, coal will continue to be a prominent fuel for the next 25 years. In fact, in many regions around the world, coal is expected to dominate the electricity sector until the year 2030. At the same time, with instability and volatility of oil prices, coal is also positioned as an alternative feed stock for conversion into liquid fuels. Energy economists maintain that coal liquefaction is viable at crude oil prices of $35 or more per barrel. Depending on technology and coal composition, 1 ton of coal can produce 1 to 4 barrels of oil. Increased coal production and the expanded utilization of coal also raise environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gases and the problem of handling CO2. Carbon sequestration research, currently conducted in many parts of the world, has demonstrated considerable potential for C-storage in unminable coal seams. Such geologic storage, when possible, can also be integrated into an enhanced coal bed methane recovery process Can coal fuel power plants and industrial facilities, provide diesel and other liquids and, at the same, also be used as a medium for permanently storing CO2? This presentation will provide a global perspective on these questions and stress on the need to reconsider, or even redefine, coal as the fuel for the future.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. Nino study demonstrated (Hale and Govett, 19677 Govett and Hale, 1967) the feasibility of geochemical prospecting relative to other exploration methods for the location and delineation of disseminated copper occurrences, the major source of metal in the expanding mineral industry of the Philippines. A ferrous chloride-oxygen leaching system was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a means of re-covering copper and silver from a sulfide concentrate that had been pretreated to remove a majority of the antimony. The pretreated concentrate contained Cu, Ag, Pb, Zn, Sb, and As. Parameters affecting metal extraction, such as temperature, pressure, amount of ferrous chloride, and initial hydrogen ion concentration, were studied. Copper extraction of 98 pct was achieved by leaching 4 hours at 40 pounds per?square inch gage (psig) and 1000 ?C. Copper was recovered from leach solutions by cementation with iron, and the resulting ferrous chloride was recycled. Leaching the residue with cyanide followed by electrowinning recovered 99.7 pct of the silver. Iron, Sb, As, Pb, and S reported to the tails.

The leaching of gold and silver by ammonium thiosulfate solutions in the presence of copper has been actively studied in recent years. Newmont Gold Company has successfully tested the ammonium thiosulfate for gold extraction following biooxidation pretreatment of low grade refractory carbonaceous/sulfidic ores. In this paper, the chemistry of the copper catalyzed leaching process is reviewed. Factors affecting both the leaching reactions and the stability of the lixiviants are reviewed and discussed from a solution chemistry perspective.

We have developed first a conveyor belt for transporting large lumps, i.e. Rock Belt successfully, in June 1976. The First Rock Belt had been delivered to Myodani site of Kobe City Developing Board in Japan, and its' successful operation has attract keen interests in customers from over the world as well as Japan. However, this First Rock Belt was removed in arch '81, viewing it has satisfactory expired its service life of about five-year, and also original location of this belt become to be far from the site due to long-years earth collecting work.
