Cerro Colorado lies on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert in the foothills of the Andean Cordillera of northern Chile. Compañía Minera Cerro Colorado SA (CMCC) operates Cerro Colorado. CMCC, headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is wholly owned by Rio Algom Ltd., of Toronto, Ontario. Cerro Colorado is located 120 km (75 miles)east of the port city of Iquique. Access is by 30 km (19 miles) of paved highway and 70 km (43 miles) of upgraded road. The mine site is located at an altitude of 2600 m (8531 ft) on a gentle west-sloping plateau adjacent to a deep canyon (Quebrada de Parca) to the north. Temperatures are moderate, ranging from 5° to 30° C (41° to 86° F) with an average annual rainfall of 20 mm (0.8 in.). The plateau is generally covered with 20 to 30 m (65 to 100 ft) of Quatemary sand and gravel overlaying bedrock. In the immediate vicinity of the Cerro Colorado deposit, a semicircular embayment has been eroded into a steep canyon wall that cuts through the surface gravels to expose a considerable section of the underlying bedrock.

The power industry throughout the world is in the midst of a significant transition that will result in a major restructuring. Deregulation of utilities in the United States is continuing, resulting in increased competition among power providers. The traditional ways that electric power is globally bought, sold and delivered will also change. However, according to the Department of Energy's (DOE) Pat Godley, one thing is clear: "Those who provide the power during the 21 st century will be those who are willing to change - those who are willing to accept new ways of doing business and willing to employ new technologies." Godley is assistant secretary of fossil energy with DOE. Her comments came during the opening remarks at the Fourth Annual Clean Coal Technology Conference, held in Denver, CO, Sept. 5-8, 1995. The conference was sponsored by DOE and the Center of Energy and Economic Development. Under the theme "Global Opportunity," more than 300 coal and utility executives spent three days discussing the new face of the electric-power industry throughout the world and the new, mostly clean coal technologies (CCT) that will be available to power providers.

INTRODUCTION Spokane Mining Research Center (BuMines) is researching sealants for underground coal mines to: 1. Reduce sloughing of shale roofs. 2. Reduce sloughing of coal ribs. 3. Seal block stoppings against air losses. 4. Construct stoppings by spraying over jute cloth or metal lath. 5. Render incombustible in-place polyurethane foam. Originally the work was directed towards reducing sloughing of shale roofs. Many underground coal mines have shale directly over the coal which weathers severely after exposure to the mine atmosphere. Lab investigations(l, 2, 3, 4) have shown that many shales separate into layers when immersed in water or stored in a high relative humidity environment. Upon drying or after removal from high humidity, the shales continue to separate. Underground coal mines become wet in the warmer months from condensation of the ventilating air. Conversely, the mines become dry in the cooler months from evaporation. The mines experience severe shale break-up during the summer and much less break-up during the winter. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show weathered shale roofs. in underground coal mines. Fig. 4 shows fallen shale on the entry floor. Sealing the shale reduces this sloughing problem.

The McDonald gold deposit is located in the upper Blackfoot Valley in Lewis and Clark County in west-central Montana, about 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Helena and 13 km (8 miles) east of Lincoln (Fig. 1). The McDonald project area covers about 20.7 km2 (8 sq miles) of elevated terrain on the north side of the Blackfoot Valley. The Blackfoot River lies 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the McDonald deposit. East Butte and West Butte rise 300 m (985 ft) above the Blackfoot Valley to an elevation of 1,750 m (5,740 ft). They conveniently divide the area into two parts. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture (SPJV) is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Mining (72.25%) and CR Montana, a subsidiary of Canyon Resources (27.75%). SPJV controls about 83 km2 (32 sq miles) of mineral and surface rights in the Lincoln area. The McDonald project is on state-owned and private land. The joint venture has conducted exploration since 1989 at the Seven-Up Pete, McDonald and Keep Cool areas (Fig. 1).

INTRODUCTION Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cities in area with a span of 70 km between its north and south limits. The population in the Los Angeles Basin exceeds 11 million people. Los Angeles is second only to New York City in density of U.S. urban population and it operates one of the largest city bus fleets in the world, 2,500 buses. After many years of planning and many consultants' reports, it is planned to initiate a 30 km (18.5 miles) starter line subway -- the "Wilshire Corridor" (Figure 1). Construction is to start in 1985. In several locations, subway routes ultimately will skirt or cross old oil fields, which may cause gassy tunneling. Of particular note are the La Brea Tar Pits, which overlie a part of the old Salt Lake oil field. Tunneling through tar sands for about 3 km will be unique for subway construction and will occur on the starter line. Experience with previous gassy tunnels in the greater Los Angeles area shows that tunnels can be completed safely if precautions are taken. Abundant ventilation is the main solution, although other precautions are discussed herein.

This paper describes the techniques implemented at Randfontein Estates to develop twin-haulages at 'high speed'. An operation which culminated in the world record advance for twin-end multiblast cyclic development in hard abrasive quartzites. A major expansion project was planned for the mine, with the sinking of a third twin-shaft system (to be known as Cooke No. 3), to raise the level of ore production from 3 500 000 to 5 000 000 tonnes per alumm. Subsequent redesign of the proposed shaft system as a single 9 m brattice wall shaft took place, reducing the planned shaft sinking period by 12 months and saving an estimated R 250 000 (U.S. $ 330 000) in sinking costs. The advancement of the Cooke No. 3 Shaft sinking and development programme necessitated a rapid excavation schedule for two interconnecting twin-haulages from the existing Cooke No. 2 twin shaft complex to provide a second means of egress. An early holing between the two shafts would provide significant financial and technical benefits. Pre-development and equipping of shaft pillar excavations would enable a rapid shaft production build up and blocking out of at least one year's ore-reserves.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program to evaluate alternatives to sodium cyanide in gold leaching, three organic nitrile compounds were tested for their effectiveness as gold lixiviante. The organic compounds examined were malononitrile, acetonitrile, and cyanoacetamide. The reagents were tested on an oxide ore, two carbonaceous ores, and a eulfidic ore. Acetonitrile and cyanoacetamide were shown to be ineffective gold leachante. Malononitrile was the most successful of the organic lixiviants. On an oxide ore, malononitrile performed shilarlyto sodium cyanide with extractions of around 80 pct. For carbonaceous "preg-robbing" oree, sodium cyanide was completely ineffective while malononitrile extracted 24 pct of the gold. When using a resin-in-leach technique, extraction with sodium cyanide increased to 60 pct and the extraction with malononitrile increased to 80 pct. On the sulfide ore, sodium cyanide and malononitrile performed similarly with 80+ pct extraction as long as the pH of the malononitrile solution wae maintained above 10.5. Malononitrile is six times less toxic than sodium cyanide as measured by LD, levels. Therefore, malononitrile has a significant advantage over eodium cyanide, but its high cost and undemonstrated usefulnees make it unlikely to gain acceptance.

Brenda Mines, located 22 km Northwest of Peachland in British Columbia, Canada was an open pit copper- molybdenum mine which closed in 1990 after 20 years of operation. The primary concern in Brenda's tailings and waste rock drainage is molybdenum at a concentration of approximately 3 mg/L. The mine drainage is alkaline and contains little or none of the typically problematic heavy metals. Given that the waters downstream are used for municipal water supply and some irrigation, a discharge limit of 0.25 ma molybdenum was imposed with specific water quality guidelines in the receiving creek. A review of all existing and potential molybdenum removal methods was undertaken prior to mine closure. The chosen process is a two-step iron co-precipitation with clarification and sand filration at a slightly acidic pH. A 4,000 usgpm (912 m3/h) treatment plant was constructed and commissioned in 1998, at a cost of $10.5M. The successful removal of molybdenum from the drainage water is explained with details on some design innovations and operational challenges encountered during plant start-up. Investigated sludge disposal options are discussed although the long term disposal scenario has not yet been finalised.

Sedimentation in highly, flocculated suspensions of fine particles, such as clays, occurs through individual settling units (flocs) that have very open structures and correspondingly low densities (typically less than 5% solids by volume). Such settling processes rapidly lead to the buildup of a bed of flocs that are essentially close-packed, with an inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%. However, the overall solids content is no more than about 2% to 3% by volume. Consequently, the thickening process is dominated by the bed consolidation rather than by the simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate, for a given system, that consolidation rates are essentially determined by the solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical, as well as the chemical, conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore, the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of the sediment (i.e., on the bed height and the solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for the laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Diesel Controls Limited evaluated a new diesel emission control system on an underground mine vehicle. The system was a catalyzed ceramic wall-flow diesel particulate filter (CDPF) combined with an catalytic converter, or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). This paper describes the design and installation of the system on a load-haul-dump (LHD). The results of screening tests conducted by the USBM are also given. The screening tests were conducted to determine if the device's particulate collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effect on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions changed over the period it was being used. The system was removed from the LHD and evaluated in the laboratory after operating for 308 and 1200 hours. After 308 hours of operation, laboratory testing revealed its particulate collection efficiency varied from 41.0 to 93.5 percent, depending on engine operating conditions. Its regeneration temperature was about 415° C. It reduced HC emissions by up to 97.6 percent, and CO by up to 95.0 percent. When tested in the laboratory after operating for 1200 hours on the vehicle, no significant change in performance was observed.

Around the beginning of the 20th Century, annual aggregate production in the United States amounted to about 50 million short tons. Today annual aggregate production is nearly 2.5 billion tons. Over a third of the States in the country produce more aggregate than the Nation did at the turn of the century. I would like to describe some of the historical events that allowed this nearly 50 fold increase in aggregate production. You might wonder why I want to talk about history. Some of our best ideas lie buried in the past, waiting to be rediscovered in the present. Almost every issue that the aggregate industry experiences today has been recognized for at least a decade; many of those issues have been recognized for a half a century; and a few of them have been recognized for nearly a century. The main reason for this article is to save the past from the forgetful indifference of the present-to faithfully preserve the past, to illustrate the insights of our predecessors, and to demonstrate how little of what we know today is really new.

Virtually no two mines operate with the same geographic, geologic, and mining conditions. It follows chat problems vary with the conditions from mine to mine or often from one section to another in the same mine. Actual situations are described, and a technique of "stacking" maps to predict hazards is presented. Two case histories of the use of multiple overlays are de- scribed. The first deals with a property that was examined before the start of mining. The second is a property in which severe ground control problems were encountered and the relationship between the problem areas and known conditions were found to be related.

Excellent underground industrial sites and warehouse facilities have been constructed in Europe and at several locations in the United States. Many quarry and mine operators are considering, or should consider, the possibilities of the development of their mineral properties in such a manner as to make underground space that is suitable for a secondary industrial use. Before proceeding with mine or quarry development, the operator should answer the following questions: 1) Is there a need for underground industrial space in your geographical area? 2) Is your deposit suitable for development of space for industrial usage? 3) If the deposit is suitable, what methods of development can be used? 4) What are the comparative economics of the different methods of space development? An honest analysis of the first two questions may eliminate the need for proceeding to the third. Affirmative answers to questions 1 and 2 should be followed by the engineering and economic studies required in response to questions 3 and 4.

Synthetic fuels will be the first major development effort to feel the effects of a new set of opposition forces. These confrontations will not be of the same variety as those which occured in the 1970s. Instead the synfuels industry, particularly in the West, will find itself confronting a new coalition of local political, community, and state spokesmen. They will oppose synfuels because the projects will represent a threat to existing lifestyles, political structures, taxes, social life, water rights, economics, and other politically sensitive considerations. In short, they mean change -- usually dynamic, full of unknowns and always threatening. The battles themselves may be fought technically over environmental issues, law and regulations; often these will be the instruments of the opposition. The real underlying problems will likely lie much deeper. In many cases environmental groups will be enlisted as the standard bearers; however, this approach may simply reflect the fact that environmental objections are convenient or at times the only tools at hand.

Introduction Compared to the gyratory crusher, the cone crusher is character¬ized by its higher speed and a flat crushing chamber design which is intended to give a high capacity and reduction ratio for materials suitable to this type of processing. The aim is to retain material longer in the crushing chamber to do more work on material as it is being processed. A concept of how a piece of stone might flow through a secondary crushing chamber is shown in Fig. 45. The number of times material will be nipped during crushing will depend on material size, friability, and the geometry of the crushing chamber as well as its speed and eccentric throw. Cone crushers are usually specified in terms of closed-side setting (CSS) and a given quantity of material passing a particular square-mesh screen size. A criterion of product passing closed-side setting is often available. This value will vary according to the particular crusher design and the details of its applica¬tion. Essentially, cone crushers can be classified into distinct types, depending on their duty. Crusher sizes for all duties are described by terms arising out of common industry usage, such as 3-ft, 7-ft, etc., which refer to the crushing-head (mantle) diameter. At present the range of sizes available varies from approximately 2 to 10 ft diam. Weights vary in the range of 5 to 200 tons, and connected horsepowers range from 10 through 700. There are so many variations that specifics should be obtained from machine manufacturers. The crushing chambers that are fitted to various machines are also often referred to by terms arising out of common usage, such as standard for secondary crushers, and short head for tertiary crush¬ers, which refer specifically to the Symons design. Also used are more specific but equally vague descriptions, such as coarse, intermedi¬ate, and fine chambers. Some manufacturers such as Allis-Chalmers with their Hydrocone crushers refer to the model number of the machine by the feed opening and the diameter of the mantle. For example, a Model 10-84 Hydrocone crusher has an 84-in. diam man¬tle, and is capable of accepting a 10-in. diam sphere at the feed point to the crushing chamber. Rexnord and Telsmith define crushing cavi¬ties in their capacity tables as feed openings at minimum recommended discharge settings (closed-side settings). Each practice offers guidelines which should be carefully defined for the specific crushing problem. The utilization of a cone crusher depends on how well it is controlled and the features of the circuit in which it operates. Normally, it will operate in the range of 75 to 85% of the peak capacity. It is likely that industry pressures will call for a standarized de¬ applied crushing power. Experience has shown that the crushing process is more controllable if certain reduction ratios are adhered to for each stage. Technically, this is defined as that size of feed (in. or mm) of which 80% will pass, divided by the size of the product (in. or mm) which 80% will pass. Secondary Crushers These are the cone crushers which accept suitable feed size material either prepared by a primary crusher or occurring naturally, and reduce it to a size suitable for marketing in one stage, or make feed for subsequent crushing or grinding stages. Secondary crushers have feed openings of 4 to 25 in. in the larger (7-ft) models down to a 2'/a to 4 in. in the smallest 24-in. models. Reduction ratios normally range between 3:1 and seldom more than 5:1. In the 7-ft models, the cone crusher typically makes a product all passing 2 in., but this is dependent on the machine design and properties of the material being treated. Secondary crushers most commonly operate in open circuit. They also are operated in closed circuit with a vibrating screen, depending upon product requirements and conditions where the reduction ratio does not cause excessive power draw and build-up of circulating load. Screening ahead of secondary crushers is generally recommended, especially where the feed contains more than 25% material smaller than the desired closed-side setting. Tertiary Crushers These are cone crushers that normally take secondary crusher product and reduce it to a marketable product or make it suitable for subsequent comminution steps. The reduction achieved is a func¬tion of the crusher design and the properties of the material to be treated. The reduction ratio is normally in the range between 1.5 and 2 to 1, and seldom more than 3 to 1. The tertiary crusher normally operates in closed circuit with a vibrating screen and makes a product smaller than all passing 'h or 5/8 in. Fine Crushers Sometimes these machines are called sand crushers and are called by various manufacturer brand names, such as Gyradisc, Hydrofine, V.F.C., and others. A cross section of a Symons Gyradisc crusher is shown in Fig. 46. Essentially, these crushers would be used in a fourth-stage crushing operation, but could be called on to reduce a screened feed size fraction from a secondary or primary crushing operation. This type of crusher normally receives feed no coarser than 1'h in. that is scalped of all over-sized material and operates in closed circuit with a vibrating screen. For average materials, typical product is '/e in. top size, although a -10 mesh product can be produced on those materials having suitable characteristics. The crusher is nor¬mally operated in a separate circuit from the main crushing plant because of the variations in output rates that are caused by varying physical properties in the feed. The reduction ratio is generally less than 2:1, and circulating loads are generally high. More interparticle crushing takes place in these machines than with conventional cone crushers and capacities can be more sensitive to changes in moisture content, feed size graduation, and other physical properties. Design Features For the various applications, crusher manufacturers normally have a range of crushers of different sizes and power ratings to select from.

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite. The word glauconite is derived from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was mined and marketed as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of manufactured fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to a decline in the use of greensand in agriculture. The material has since been recognized as useful in water treatment. Unfortunately, despite large reserves and world- wide distribution, glauconite has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This is probably due mostly to a paucity of research on its potential commercial uses. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and a generally low potash content (viz., less than 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of as much as 22.5 kg/m2 were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 4.5 to 11 kg/m2 (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of its slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as poison, burning, or black marls. The availability of higher grade potash salts from other mineral sources and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the latter 1800s. During the mid-1800s the greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000/y. Toward the end of the century, however, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000 in value. By 19 10 there were only six or eight greensand producers grossing less than $5,000/y each (Tyler, 1934). There was a brief revival of the US industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the latter 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was used in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s it was used for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base exchange properties of glauconite were recognized for water treatment and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Mansfield (1922) does not mention base exchange even though this phenomenon was known in 1916 or earlier. From 1916 through 1922 several patents for the use of glauconite as a water softening agent were granted. A method was also patented for treating greensand to improve it for water softening and ready regeneration with common sodium chloride brine (Borrowman, 1920, Spencer, 1924, Kriegsheim and Vaughan, 1930). Treated glauconite, on contact with water containing magnesia or lime, takes up magnesium or calcium ions and releases sodium ions. This exchange is limited to the outer surface of glauconite grains, and when all the surfaces have absorbed their capacity, the grains must be regenerated. Regeneration, simply stated, consists of treating or backwashing the glauconite with a sodium chloride solution, which replaces the hard water elements with sodium, thus reviving the glauconite. The process has become more sophisticated due to competition among companies in the water softening business. Greensand products for water softening generally consisted of several different grades distinguished by the particular treatment the glauconite was given during processing. The standard greensand water softener was produced from natural glauconite that was only washed and classified. Its characteristics for water softening are given in [Table 1].

INTRODUCTION Several major factors introduce uncertainties into the assessment of radon progeny exposure to miners using time-weighted average radon progeny concentrations: uncertainty in the measurement of radon progeny concentrations in specific areas, assignment of an individual miner's time to those areas, variation in radon progeny concentration between measurements and potential human errors involved in calculating concentrations and handling data. The currently available grab-sampling methods for determining working level were analyzed to determine the magnitude of the uncertainty due to each of these factors. For all measurement methods studied, the variation in the airborne concentration with time in operational areas of a mine is the dominant factor in the uncertainty in determining annual radon progeny exposures for individual miners. Uncertainties relating to accuracy of the method and precision of measurement were found to contribute a significantly greater portion of the total uncertainty than human errors. Under normal conditions, if the technicians performing the measurements are conscientious and well trained, human error contributes little to the total uncertainty of the radon progeny exposure determination. The primary goal of radiation monitoring is the reduction of radiation exposure to the lowest reasonably achievable level below regulatory limits. Monitoring personnel in mines should be trained not only to obtain accurate estimates of miner radiation exposures but also to recognize and, when possible, to implement correction of situations which result in unnecessarily high radon progeny exposures. ESTIMATION OF UNCERTAINTY DUE TO HUMAN ERRORS Human errors affecting the assignment of annual radon progeny exposure to individual miners can be placed in two categories: those related to the measurement of radon progeny concentration in specific mine areas and those related to estimation of occupancy time for individual miners and transcribing data to permanent records. The former are specific for the measurement method used; the latter are common to all methods. Errors in Determination of Working Level All systems for determining radon progeny concentration require measurement of several parameters, which include volume of air sampled, count rate and decay time. These quantities and appropriate constants are used in a basic equation, specific to the system, which estimates working level. An unintentional random mistake in measurement of any one of these parameters or in the selection of proper constants will contribute to the uncertainty in the determination of working level. In our analysis of human error we separated each measurement method into a sequence of independent operations, with each step subject to operator error. For each operation we estimated the probability of occurrence and the consequence of errors to obtain a resulting uncertainty. Certain types of errors result in specific consequences. For example, we assumed that an error of 5 seconds in timing of a 5-minute sample results in a fractional error of 1/60 (1.7%). Other types of errors can result in a range of uncertainty. Transposing digits read from a scaler can produce errors ranging from near zero to approximately 60%. In these cases we calculated the statistical variance for the distribution of errors. We assigned the square root of the variance divided by the mean as the consequence factor for that type of error. This is essentially the same as a coefficient of variation. The product of the probability of occurrence and the consequence factor is the fractional uncertainty in the measurement due to that particular error. The total uncertainty due to human errors is calculated by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the uncertainties generated by all manual operations. Uncertainties Due to Human Error for the Kusnetz Method One of the techniques most commonly used to estimate working level in U.S. uranium mines is the Kusnetz method. A generalized way to express the equation used to compute WL by this method is: WL = (Net Alpha Counts)/(V)(ST)(CT)(E)(K) where: V = sample flow rate in liters/min ST = sampling time in min CT = counting time in minutes E = absolute counting efficiency K = Kusnetz conversion factor (dis/min-L per WL), as a function of decay time in minutes. The example of human error analysis presented here is based on the Kusnetz procedure having a timing sequence of 5 minutes sampling time, 40 minute decay time, 2 minute counting time. During the sampling procedure a stop watch is used to determine the timing interval. We assume that it is common to make small timing errors of a few seconds, but larger timing errors occur infrequently. Introduction Coal mining in Alaska's interior, specifically in the Healy area, began as early as 1918 with the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Mining was originally limited to underground operations but has expanded to entirely surface operations. In 1943, the Usibelli Coal Mine was formed and started developing Alaska's first surface mine east of Suntrana (Usibelli Coal Miner, 1984). Production from the local coal deposits has steadily increased and, in 1978, surface mining of Poker Flats was initiated (Fig. 1). Currently, a 25-m3 (33-cu yd) walking dragline strips two coal seams, using an extended bench on the second pass. In addition, a fleet of trucks and shovels are used for coal removal and some limited overburden stripping. In 1984, a contract was signed between Usibelli Coal Mine and Sun Eel Shipping Co. in 1984. Since then, production has nearly doubled to more than 1.3 Mt/a (1.5 million stpy). This article will discuss geotechnical constraints on mining within the steeply dipping coal deposits that exist within the Poker Flats mining area. Specifically, the article will describe how the mining operation retriggered an historic landslide on the No. 5 coal seam (Fig. 2). And the article tells how a mine plan was developed that allowed the coal to be safely removed without inducing additional movement. Regional geology The coal-bearing group in the Nenana coal field is of Tertiary Age. It is overlain in some areas by several thousand feet of Tertiary gravels - the Nenana Gravels. In areas mined by surface methods, the Nenana Gravels have been eroded off, and up to 30 m (100 ft) of quaternary outwash gravels overlay the coal-bearing formations. The coal-bearing group is divided into five formations: Healy Creek, Sanctuary, Suntrana, Lignite, and Grubstake (Wahrhaftig, 1969). Lignite Creek lies on the north limb of a west plunging anticline. This has brought the Suntrana coal-hearing formations near enough to the surface to allow surface mining. Mining is presently in progress on the south side of Lignite Creek in the Poker Flats area. The coal-bearing formation is cut off to the south by a fault having perhaps several thousand feet of vertical displacement, with the upthrust side to the north. South of this fault, Nenana Gravels are exposed on the surface. The Suntrana Formation contain the minable reserves at Poker Flats. This formation is a repeated sequence of poorly consolidated pebbly sandstone near the bottom, grading through a silty fine sandstone to a footwall clay unit immediately below a coal seam cap. The footwall clays are high plasticity clays to silty clays. It has been reported that they contain 30% to 50% montmorillonite (Usibelli Coal Mine Inc., 1982). There are six coal seams in the Suntrana Formation, No. I (the lower seam) through No. 6. Only the top four seams are currently exposed. No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 seams are the only mined seams. The No. 5 seam is very thin or not present. Portions of the undisturbed Suntrana Formation are overlain by up to 15 m (50 ft) of Quaternary outwash gravels or recent landslide rubble. The surface is overlain by a very thin layer of muskeg and isolated areas of permafrost. In many areas, the outwash gravels are found immediately below the surface muskeg. Numerous landslides have been documented along the north facing slopes of Lignite Creek (US Geological Survey, 1970, and Wahrhaftig, 1958). These appear to be surficial solifluction or skin flow types of landslides. In addition, deep-seated structurally controlled slides are also evident on both the north and south sides of Lignite Creek. Structural features Premining aerial photographs (Fig. 3) of the Lignite Creek slopes in the Poker Flats area indicate substantial evidence of deep-seated landsliding. The landslides noted in Fig. 3 are both inside and outside of the current mining area. Surface mapping and geologic exploration indicate that the coal seams are dipping out of the slopes within the noted slide areas. It is suspected that, historically, these landslides were triggered by undercutting of the toe of the slopes by Lignite Creek. And sliding it thought to have taken place on one or more of the clay beds underlying the coal seams (Golder, 1985). The slide areas are characterized by semicircular head scarps and slumped topography. Based on the premining photographs, these slides do not appear to have been recently active. INTRODUCTION The inactive uranium mill tailings investigated in this study are located in two mining districts, Elliot Lake and Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. The sites exhibit a mixture of surface features consisting of dry areas, with or without vegetation and areas covered with water. On the edges of the water bodies, indigenous vegetation has invaded the tailings beaches [ Typha] spp. (Tourn.) L. a dominant plant on these tailings beaches, has been studied for the uptake of radium-226 and lead-210 (Kalin and Sharma, 1981b) from the tailings. It was found that most of the radium-226 remains in the roots of the plants, and that the solubility of radium-226 in control soil differs from that in tailings. The uptake of radium226 by vegetation and other biota is related to the solubility of the element in water. Factors controlling the solubility of radium-226 in uranium mill tailings are of interest in assessing the environments effects of these wastes. Rusanova (1962) found that the soluble or extractable amount of radium from the soil is inversely related to the total concentration of calcium and magnesium in the soil. Experimental work has clarified some aspects of the leachability of radium from uranium mill tailings (Levins, et al., 1978; Wiles, 1978, and others). Halvik, et al., (1967) studied the effects of pH and chemical composition of surface water on the liberation of radium from uranium mill tailings and uranium ore. He found that an increase in pH, up to a value of pH 9, decreases the amount of radium released from the tailings and the ore. A positive effect of calcium chloride was noted on the leachability of radium. Benes (1981) reviewed the physicochemical forms of radium and its migration in water. Based on experimental work, he identifies primary factors which determine leaching of radium from uranium mill tailings. The ratio of the volume of the leaching solution to the weight of the leached sample; the composition of the leached solids and the leaching solution, and finally the pH of the leaching mixture are of importance. He emphasized that a scarcity of field data exists, which would relate experimental work to the actual situation in the tailings ponds. Inactive tailings ponds in Ontario are 16 to 23 years old, and processes which are of importance in evaluating the long term effects of uranium mill tailings in the environment can be studied. The objective of this work was to investigate the leachability of radium-226 from the tailings under field conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sample Collection A description of inactive tailings sites in Ontario, where the tailings and the water for this study were collected, can be found in a report by Kalin (1981). [Typha] spp. specimens were excavated from 16 different locations along with the tailings attached to the roots of the plants. A tailings sample from the surface area, around the plant, was secured before the excavation. Tailings samples were also collected from dry areas free of vegetation in the vicinity of the wetland stand. Surface samples (depth 0-5 cm) and samples at a depth of 20-25 cm were secured. Water was collected from the shallow tailings beaches around the vegetation stands. Sample Preparation The roots of the plants were washed free of tailings with distilled water. The resulting thick slurry of tailings was allowed to settle in the wash basin for five minutes and the supernatant water was decanted. The remaining saturated tailings were brought to 400 ml volume with distilled water in a beaker. The slurry was mixed with a magnetic stirrer for two 24-hour periods. After the first 24-hours, the slurry was allowed to settle for 20 minutes and the supernatant water was removed. The remaining sediments were suspended again in distilled water (400 ml total mixture) and leached for a second 24hour period. The tailings slurries from the different locations had a solid to liquid ratio, which ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 grams of dry tailings material per millilitre. The variations in the ratios are the result of differing fractions of coarse and fine tailings on the sites. In the final leachates, the solid to liquid ratios of the samples were 0.17 (±0.1) g/ml. The pH of the surface water and the leachate was determined with an I.L. Portomatic pH meter. All the tailings samples were homogenized in a mortar and brought to dryness at 75 to 85°C. Crushing and grinding The Crushing and Grinding Technical Committee There was substantial activity in the area of crushing and grinding with the improved outlook in the industry. The Crushing and Grinding Committee's theme of 1987's Annual Meeting in Denver was Fundamentals of Mechanical Design for Crushing and Grinding Mills. At the meeting, the concept of gearless sag mill variable speed drives was taken out of the closet, dusted off, and a wraparound motor was put on hard copy with the ordering of a 9.7- x 4.5-m, 8.2-MW (32- x 15-ft, 11,000-) sag mill. Additionally, comparisons were provided to the mill design of the gearless drive sag mill and the twin 4.5 MW (6000 hp) do variable speed drives placed on the drawing board for the Kennecott UCD Expansions. This involved a 10- x 4.5m, 8.9 MW (34- x 15 ft, 12,000 hp) sag mill. Differing opinions were also expressed in technical presentations pertaining to the need for quality mill specifications in design and manufacturing. J. Berney-Ficklin of Bechtel presented a paper outlining the need for quality design and manufacturing specifications in large scale grinding mills, and the overall cost reduction in capital and operating costs. Others presented differing specific views, but all emphasized a central theme. Quality and reliable designs in large mills should not be compromised. In-pit crushing applications continue to increase, overseas and in the US, in both mining and quarrying. Different in-pit crushing units have been classified as mobile, with integral transport systems; semi-mobile, typically modular systems that use separate transporters for repositioning; semi-stationary plants that must be dismantled before transporting and typically require earthwork and concrete foundation work; and stationary in-pit crushing plants, which remain in place for the life of the pit. The majority of equipment sales of conventional crushing and grinding circuits in 1987 were to gold mining operations. There have been two areas of end use: • conventional jaw/gyratory or impact crushing circuits preparing low grade ores for heap leaching; and • small scale sag/ball mill circuits preparing higher grade ores for classical cyanide leach/ recovery circuits. There was also continued interest in ABC and SABC circuits for both base and precious metals plants. High pressure roll crushers continue to attract considerable interest in the cement industry. There, they are used to prepare raw materials or clinker for subsequent ball/tube milling. However, they have apparently been less successful in the mineral industry where the energy savings/ capacity gains have been much less dramatic. Several papers covering the theory and application of these machines were presented in an industrial minerals session on cement at the SME Annual Meeting. The Third International Conference on Hydrocylones, held in England in October produced several papers of interest on classification and screening to the mining industry. In particular, a new cyclone apex, developed by Mt. Newman Mining, shows promise of reducing water flow to the cyclone underflow stream and, therefore, increased underflow pulp densities and reduced fines recycle in grinding circuits. A twin vortex hydrocyclone was also described and shown to give a sharper split than conventional units. Similar double cyclones were introduced in the 1950's, but failed to achieve widespread acceptance. This was due mainly to a proneness to blockage in the transitional zone. It will be interesting to see whether this latest variant can overcome this problem in the typical operation. A number of North American iron ore plants installed the capability to produce fluxed iron ore pellets. Most chose to grind the stone on site with circuits designed to grind taconite ore. Methods employed to grind this material included single-stage ball mills closed with fine screens, rod and ball mill circuits - both open and closed with cyclones - and semiautogenous mills, followed by ball mills closed with screens or cyclones. Dewatering and tailings disposal B.M. Moudgil and D.L. Sober, University of Florida Due to tightened environmental regulations and the need for more efficient land use, a greater interest in dewatering and waste disposal has developed. As a result, research efforts in flocculation, surface chemistry, and polymers science have focused on the problems related to the dewatering of solid mineral wastes. A few studies have been conducted to examine the flocculation process. Hogg et al., (1987) discussed the formation and growth of flocs.
