Laboratory testing for flotation circuit design is carried out on a routine basis in a large number of lab- oratories throughout the world. Usually a sample of ore, assumed to be characteristic of the material to be processed in a future plant, having a mass of the order of a few kilograms, is ground in a batch ball or rod mill, in the presence of water and some re- agents (for pH control, etc. .. ); after dilution to the adequate solid concentration, the resulting slurry is transferred into a laboratory batch flotation machine, having a volume which can vary from 0.5 to 8 10 -3m3. Various types of machines are in common use, manufactured by the same companies that market industrial size flotation machines. The operation of flotation in the laboratory is carried out by an experienced technician, who uses parameters such as impeller rotation speed, air flowrate addition, froth height, froth removal rate, in conjonction with reagent addition sequence, to "test" the ore. After flotation, the froth products ("concentrates"), and the solids remaining in the cell are filtered, dried, and analyzed for the various elements of interest. For flotation circuit design, a kinetic test is usually carried out, in which the froth products obtained at various times are collected to assess the time response of the ore in the laboratory machine with the combination of reagents used. Although this description is rather sketchy, it enables to outline some of the major difficulties in using laboratory data for flotation circuit design: 1. ore sample representatively 2. feed preparation procedure (laboratory compared to industrial scale) 3. laboratory procedures (type of ma- chine, type of operation, experimental errors. . . ) 4. flotation machine scale-up 5. flotation kinetic scale-up 6. flotation circuit design using laboratory data These various points will be discussed in the present paper, in order to stress the problem areas as well as possible solutions. ORE SAMPLE REPRESENTATIVITY It has been stated many times that one of the major problem in designing a flotation circuit is the representatively of the sample to be taken. INTRODUCTION Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. I speak to you today on the subject assigned to me, "Subsidence - a Real or Imaginary Problem", as a representative of Consolidation Coal Company (a wholly owned subsidiary of Continental Oil Company). The information I relate to you is our experience in the Pittsburgh Coal Company Division of Consol and covers the Pennsylvania properties and mines with particular emphasis on the mines in the south- western portion of the State or in the immediate vicinity of Pittsburgh, Pa. Mining of Freeport and Pittsburgh seams of coal in the Pittsburgh vicinity dates back over one hundred years. Consol, or its predecessor, Pittsburgh Coal Company, has been actively engaged in mining in the area since Pittsburgh Coal Company was organized in 1900. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania came into prominence as the Steel City largely because of the vast reserves of high grade metallurgical coal readily available in the immediate vicinity and also because of its favorable river transportation. Early in the 1900's we operated over 100 small coal mines, with operations located in the Counties of Allegheny, Fayette, Washington, Westmoreland. We have also operated mines in Somerset and Greene Counties. Titles in Pennsylvania can be in three estates: (1) title in fee, (2) title to the mineral, (3) mining rights permitting the removal and extraction of the mineral with or without waiver of surface damage. Consol has over the years acquired good legal title to the coal lands purchased from individual farm owners, with good broad mining rights, and in 98% or more of its title has a complete waiver of surface damage or the right to subside the surface land. In the early days of our Company, individual coal farms were purchased from land owners. Many of these titles severed the coal estate from the in fee title and good mining rights with waiver of surface were conveyed in the original severance deed. Thus, minable coal reserves were put together by the purchase of the coal under many individual farms in an area. In the early years, the mines practiced hand dug mining - later going to mechanical cutting with hand loading of the coal. Systems used were entry driving with room and rib panels. We have practiced full recovery mining as far as practical during the years of hand loading, as well as in the later years when the mines were mechanized. Mining system layouts, methods and procedures have changed from time to time to keep pace with improved mining machinery and new inovations, such as roof bolting and rubber tired haulage.

Wollastonite is a little known industrial mineral of the silicate group. The largest and purest known deposit in the free world is being mined and beneficiated in Millsboro, New York by NYCO, A Division of Processed Minerals Incorporated. The associated garnet and diopside are separated from the wollastonite using dry high intensity magnetic separators. Beneficiated wollastonite is used extensively as an additive and filler in the ceramic, paint, refractory, and wallboard industries. Wollastonite acts as a functional filler due to its unique chemistry and physical acicularity.

Since time immemorial, Mother Nature has been transporting slurries with both air and water serving as the carrier medium. Consider for example the formation of the continental shelves off our coast lines which are being formed by rivers emptying erroded land surface and depositing it into bays and gulfs. As the erosion processes take place, the fines are suspended in water which flows in streams and rivers and deposits where the velocity of the flow reduces sufficiently to allow the fines to settle out. The same process in some crude form is provided when one hoses his driveway or patio and moves dirt so as to provide a cleaning action. These examples illustrate rather crudely how the formation of slurries allows for the transport of solids. In recent years, this mechanism has become fairly well understood and slurry pipelining of many materials is now a vivid reality. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps for the purpose. Those of us who have had some rub with the petroleum industry are familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well the circulating fluid utilized to remove chips which are cut by a drill bit from holes drilled deep in the earth is called drilling mud. This substance contrary to what the name might imply is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics which are desirable in the drilling process. The particles which have been cut by the drill bit are suspended in the moving column of fluid and brought to the surface and deposited. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits. However, it is impractical to remove the fines completely from the drilling fluid and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulatory stream.

State geological surveys promote sound procedures for evaluation of mineral resources before development-procedures that protect the environment and accrue maximum benefit to citizens. Sophisticated laboratories have been equipped for geophysical, geochemical, petrographic, and mineralogic characterization of materials to assist citizens in land-use planning and optimum development of natural resources, activities clearly within purview of the state. Proper use of these facilities in support of exploration in a competitive, free-enterprise system should be based on achieving ultimate benefits to the public, but, in general, should not entail competition with commercial laboratories.

This paper describes the development of a modified Goodman Jack method for determining the mechanical properties of rock masses in situ. The modified method consists of the basic borehole loading device and a friction-strain-gauge measuring module. The friction gauges, located in the central portion of the jack, are impressed on opposite quadrants of the borehole walls and the remaining quadrants are loaded by the borehole jack with a uniaxial self-equilibrating pair of forces. The tangential strains generated at the borehole walls are thus measured concurrently with the loading. For ideal elastic materials, the tangential stresses at any point on the borehole walls due to jack loading can be obtained from closed-form analytical solutions utilizing the complex variable method. Complete stress-strain curves for the rock material can then be directly obtained from the tangential strain measurements and the calculated tangential stresses at those points. The continuous data are considerably more significant and reliable than averaged or point data obtainable by other current in situ measuring techniques. Moreover, the advantages inherent to the original Goodman Jack method are also obtainable in the modified method. The suitability of the new method was demonstrated by carrying out a number of laboratory measurements in large specimens of reinforced concrete, aluminum and granite blocks. The results of actual field measurements carried out in sandstone and granite quarries were found comparable with those obtained in the laboratory.

Conventional underground mapping methods and diamond drilling are being applied in a study to determine the nature of the copper ore occurrences near the footwall of the Osceola lava flow top, commonly referred to as the Osceola Amygdaloid. Our work to date suggests that structures formed by relatively impermeable barriers, created by flowage and injection of still-molten lava from the interior of the flow into the solidified, brecciated crust, acted as the ore receptacles. Ascending hydrothermal fluids traveling near the footwall contact were trapped and confined in these barriers which retarded the direct upward movement of the ore fluids and caused deposition of copper. Oreshoots located near the footwall appear to have been formed spatially' independently from the hanging-wall oreshoots by fluids traveling simultaneously, but along different channelways. The barrier concept as advanced by earlier writers to explain the concentration of the ore-bearing, fluids into broad shoots con¬stituting entire ore bodies is found to be equally as applicable for the localization of smaller oreshoots within the Osceola ore body.

Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Alabama. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open-pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A. P. Green Refractories Company, were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope- stabilization problem aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.

The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. The Anaconda Minerals Company operates a molybdenite and copper producing mine and mill facility near Tonopah, Nevada. Included with the milling facility is a ferric chloride leach plant for removal of copper mineralization from the molybdenite concentrates. Discussed are the engineering and construction schedules associated with the leach plant. The chemistry associated with the process along with a description of the process flow, equipment, and operating parameters are contained in the paper.

Stability of fine quartz suspensions in process water is of concern in several mineral processing applications. In alkaline solutions, the presence of magnesium ions, arising from such sources as water hardness and magnesium-bearing minerals, leads to the precipitation of Mg(OH)2 which coats the surfaces of quartz. The conditions under which heterocoagulation or surface precipitation of Mg(OH)2 on quartz occur and the manner in which they influence the settling behavior of ground quartz was studied by means of settling tests, coating density determinations, zeta potential measurements and electron microscope observations. Coating density was greater when Mg(OH)2 nucleated on the surface of quartz than when the precipitates heterocoagulated on the quartz surface. The settling curves of quartz suspensions in the presence of different concentrations of MgCl2 exhibited a maximum of maxima which occurred at 10-3M MgC12 and pH 11. Interactions between quartz and Mg(OH)2, and flocculation-dispersion characteristics of quartz suspensions in this system are discussed.

As part of the Bureau of Mines research on the In-Situ Uranium Leaching, various geophysical resistivity measuring techniques were -evaluated to identify a rapid reliable method for detecting the underground migration of lixiviant outside of the planned limits. Surface and downhole galvanic resistivity and controlled source audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) methods were tested at an in-situ uranium mine in Northern Wyoming during start-up of a new mining area. Downhole galvanic and AMT were the most promising techniques.

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.

One of the most difficult items to justify economically on any budget is a training program. The costs can easily be identified--primarily the cost of the program and the inconvenience and cost of filling in for the men taking the training by working other personnel extra hours at overtime rates. Operating efficiency, higher productivity, increased plant availability, development of confidence, improvement in morale and less absenteeism are only a few of the benefits which far exceed the costs. A good preparation plant training program can accomplish more in 5 weeks than can be accomplished in five years of on-the-lob operation. During recent years, coal preparation plants have become more sophisticated and complex as the specification for coal used by electric utilities in their power plants have required improvements in coal quality to adhere to air quality regulations and to improve boiler performance and reliability.

Paques and Umicore have demonstrated the feasibility of biological treatment of the highly complex Hoboken wastewaters in a1 m3/h pilot plant at Umicore Precious Metals, Hoboken, Belgium. In the first step arsenic was precipitated from copper smelter effluent as As2S3using biogenic produced H2S. Other metals such as copper, lead and cadmium were also removed as MeS to concentrations well below the discharge levels. Subsequently, sulfate and nitrate were removed to low concentrations (<300 mg/l and < 5 mg/l respectively) in high rate engineered bioreactors. Sulfide produced in the sulfate reduction process was recycled to step 1 for metals precipitation. Selenite/selenate was partly removed in the sulfide precipitation step, whereas the excess was biologically reduced and removed as selenium to concentrations <0.2 mg/l.
