Recent research into the mechanisms of crushing processes has led to the establishment of new criteria for the effective design and operation of comminution plants. This paper reviews this work and gives examples of the productivity gains and cost benefits that have been achieved in the practical application of these findings.

The 2014 George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center, City University of New York in New York City was presented under the theme, ?21st Century Challenges for the Tunneling Industry. Bruce Grewcock, chief executive officer and president of Peter Kiewit Sons? Inc., opened the conference with a keynote address in which he set the tone for the rest of the day by touching on the many challenges the industry is facing, which are plentiful and complex. Covering the breadth of the industry, he spoke about everything from the technical challenges that come from working beneath the streets of some of the most densely populated regions in the world to the challenges that come from working with the people who live in those areas. ?My observation is that we, as an industry, are being asked to put structures in places where they are needed, but are complex environments to work in,? said Grewcock. ?We work in an industry that relies on some of the most technically challenging engineering in the world, and when we are done with a project, we cover it up and no one ever sees it.? Despite these issues, Grewcock said that, in his opinion, the biggest challenge the industry is facing is that of people; more precisely, where to find the next batch of people. Looking out at the conference-record crowd of more than 400 registered attendees, Grewcock quipped that he saw plenty of gray beards and asked aloud, ?Where will we find, educate and train the people to tackle the issues that this industry will face in the future??

The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner's existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

The need for dimensionally stable filled polymer composites has spurred the quest for materials that possess a negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Finding minerals and materials with a negative CTE large enough to counteract the substantial CTE found in polymers proves challenging. Much research has been per-formed over the last decade to uncover various materials that possess this unusual behavior. A list of materials that have demonstrated negative properties are discussed, as well as the experimental use of one such material (ZrW2O8), in a polymer matrix composite. Underground mine fires are a threat to the safety and health of mine workers. The timely determination of the location and size of an underground fire is of great importance in developing firefighting strategies and reducing the risk of any injuries. Machine learning was used in this paper to develop a predictive model for fire location and fire size in an underground mine. The ventilation data were obtained by simulating different mine fire scenarios with MFire. The ventilation data of all airways were used as features to predict the fire location. Based on the feature importance, five airways were selected to monitor, and the airflow data of the selected airways were used to predict the fire location and fire size. An accuracy score of 0.920 was obtained for the prediction of fire location. In addition, in-depth analyses were conducted to characterize the wrong predictions with the purpose of improving the performance of the random forest model. The results show that the occurrence of fire at closely connected airways at some locations can generate misleading ventilation data for each other and the model performance can be further improved by grouping them. Fire size is another factor affecting the model performance and the model accuracy increases with increasing fire size. The result from this study can help mine safety personnel make informed decisions during a mine fire emergency.

The fluidized bed is an effective method for investigating retorting phenomena and possibly a commercial means of retorting oil shale. Both were examined by Sinclair Oil Corp. (now part of Atlantic Richfield Co.) in the period 1.965 to 1968. The results of the work show that presence of an oxidizing environment during retorting results in loss of oil yield which indicates that vapor phase oil burns in preference to combustion of coke on spent shale. This has implications for several types of retorts. Correlation of the results of this work with that of other investigators shows that the partial pressure of retorting products in contact with oil shale during retorting has an effect on yield. Consideration of hardware indicates that there are several possibilities for commercial embodiment. As a companion to shaft-type retorts the fluidized bed could have good potential. Realistic assessment of costs suggests that further development may have to await commercialization of another process. The existence of a plant in which to test prototype size would markedly reduce such development costs. Results Preliminary development work with the apparatus was carried out using a fluidized bed of sand, as explained later, with the entire system brought up to temperature and flows stabilized. The shale was injected rapidly in a slug (batch) which had small mass compared to that of the high temperature system to make the reaction approach isothermality with reasonable approximation of instantaneous preheating. Typically, the temperature in the center of the bed dropped from 900°F to 600°F one minute after batch addition. It returned to 750' within three minutes and 900° within seven minutes. Obviously, the bed was quenched but it recovered rapidly. Average bed temperatures of 700' to 1020°F were examined to compare the effect of temperature with published results. Yields In the 700°F range were only 10 to 15%, of Fischer Assay (FA). Above about 950'F, oil yields decreased and gas yields increased. Nitrogen was used first as the fluidizing gas to provide a chemically inert medium. Incept for an insignificant dip at 895"F, Figure 1, oil yield was not affected by retorting temperature in the 800° to 900' range as long as residence time was adequate (16 minutes). At 925°F, the oil yield was some 103% FA. With further increase in temperature, the yield decreased to 86% FA at 1015°F. There is no increase in carbon on spent shale, the lost oil goes to Increased gas make.

This study was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to better understand rock-mass behavior in longwall coal mines in highly stressed, bump-prone ground. The floor-heave and nofloor- heave phenomena at a western US coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria (i.e., Mohr–Coulomb or Hoek–Brown failure criterion). The previous numerical study demonstrated these phenomena using a user-defined model of the s-shaped brittle failure criterion in conjunction with a spalling process in the FLAC3D numerical modeling software. The results of the FLAC3D modeling agreed with the observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system. However, the FLAC3D model adopted many assumptions and simplifications that were not very realistic from a physical or mechanical perspective. To overcome the limitations of the FLAC3D model, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. The effect of stress rotation in the mining-induced stress field was considered by using a different geometry of rock fractures in the coal seam. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) were also considered by using Monte Carlo simulations. Consequently, the 3DEC models using the DFN technique resulted in predictions of floor heave that agreed with observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

Recently, the President of the Portland Cement Association, Robert D. Maclean, gave the keynote address at the Rock Products Eighth International Cement Industry Seminar. He said, after listing the seven plagues our industry is suffering, "none of these items I have listed is a sales or marketing problem. Further, none is a problem that can be relegated to long-term study by public or private research agencies. They are here-and-now problems to be faced daily by producers, researchers, equipment manufacturers and consultants. THE DAY OF THE PRODUCTION MAN IS HERE." (1)

The pandemic emergency is forcing transit agencies to define strategies allowing social distancing, which are more challenging in underground interchange stations in crowded downtown cores. Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Yonge Station Capacity Improvement Project in Toronto was approved to meet increasing demand and represents an opportunity to fight COVID-19. This paper discusses cost-effective solutions in expanding the cut-and-cover station box over the existing Toronto Subway Line 2 and connecting it through ventilation openings in the cast-iron tunnel liner. Potential uplift risks and structural damage due to minimal vertical clearance were analyzed via three-dimensional finite element analyses with advanced constitutive laws to simulate the multi-stage construction process. Based on the simulation results, a series of countermeasures, including excavation support systems, king posts, ground-consolidations, and liner reinforcements were integrated into comprehensive design options to ensure the serviceability and structural integrity of the subway tunnels.

The Upper Hidden Basin Diversion (UHBD) tunnel was driven approximately 1.2 miles by the drill-and-blast method primarily through massive granite bedrock geology for the Kodiak Electric Association, Inc. (KEA) in Kodiak, Alaska. The tunnel was driven from both portals with a constant 11-ft straight-leg horseshoe cross-section. The design and construction of the tunnel was driven by logistics and weather conditions due to its remote location and the rugged terrain of the project setting. This paper will discuss the successful completion of a challenging project over a ve-year period from preliminary planning through the design and construction phases.

"While mines generally focus on achieving operational efficiency, creating shared value for all stakeholders is also a management goal. This includes taking a holistic view of their supply chains and increasing local participation. This paper examines the role of supply chain management in mine management; in particular the effect of a strong local supply chain on regional economic impacts. Using input-output analysis, the impact of a local supply chain on a mining sector’s regional economic impact is examined by increasing local sourcing (increasing local purchase percentage -- LPP) for 10 key commodities. An approach, based on multipliers and excess local capacity is used to identify key commodities. The impacts examined are sales, employment, labor income, and value added. The work is illustrated with stone mining and quarrying in Missouri. Ten percent increases in LPP of the key commodities, in this example, result in $4.1 million additional impact on the Missouri economy. This work can provide insight on how to better create shared value for all stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Little research has been published on improving mine supply chain management (SCM) to enhance regional economic impacts. Although some extensive academic research has explored the importance of an industries’ supply chain, not much is known about how a locally-based supply chain increases shared value in the resource sector. Across industries, traditional SCM is getting more and more complex. This is true of the mining sector as well. However, this increased sophistication is not directed towards increasing shared value for all stakeholders, particularly, the local communities. Further research is required to develop new SCM strategies that enhance local participation. One major point of difference between this work and traditional supply chain management is the inclusion of stakeholders’ shared value as a goal in SCM. Creating shared value has become a business goal in recent years (Porter and Kramer, 2011). The authors use input-output analysis (Leeuw, 2012) to evaluate the regional economic impacts of supply chain decisions, which is not part of traditional SCM. Although input-output analysis has been applied to SCM for decades, most of the research uses input-output analysis as a tool to advance an industries’ own operational efficiency (Accenture, 2014)."

Gypsum is the crystalline chemical compound CaS04?2H20. A close chemical relation - and frequently occurring with Gypsum ? is Anhydrite which is Cask. Gypsun has wide commercial use because relatively simple heat processing reduces it to Plaster of Paris. While Anhydrite can be converted to Gypsum and thence to Plaster of Paris, the procedure is not simple and is quite costly. Anhydrite, however does have use in the agricultural field and in the Portland Cement industry. Occurrence of Gypsum in the earth structure is usually near or at the surface. Most underground mining is at 60 to 100 feet although one mine in southwest Virginia reaches a depth of 1300 feet. Gypsum is one of our softest minerals, rating only 2.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Specific gravity is 2.3 to 2.4. It is soluble in water but only slightly so. Interestingly, it is more soluble in cold water than in hot. For example, one part Gypsum dissolves in 370 parts water at 106° Fahrenheit while at 212°F. the water requirement is 452 parts. Compressive strength of massive Gypsum runs about 3000 lbs. per square inch. Color ranges from grey and brownish-grey to white.

Before getting into the subject of packaging and materials management, please permit me to introduce you to MICRO SWITCH. MICRO SWITCH, A Division of Honeywell Inc. is located in Freeport, Illinois. We manufacture and market thousands of types of precision snap-action electrical switches. Most of them are used as components by other manufacturers in industrial and commercial products. MICRO SWITCH also offers a broad line of industrial control devices including heavy- duty limit switches, relays, manual controls and proximity switches. Other product lines are solid state keyboards for the computer industry and high-performance d.c. motors used in computer related equipment. So you can see that we are a component manufacturer. With the exception of the keyboards, every one of our products would "fit comfortably into a breadbox." Some are so tiny that one could easily fit several thousand into a man's hat. In my position as supervisor-packaging. package design, and materials handling engineering, I am actively involved in package design projects, parts handling design projects, and numerous activities involving departmental layouts, storage facilities, and material handling equipment. Compared to the traditional method of holding coal in railroad cars at the ports for dumping their contents into vessels, it provided for: a. The Similkameen Copper Project located near Princeton, British Columbia, is operated by the Similkameen Mining Company Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Company. The orebodies for this project are located on both sides of the Similkameen River for which the project is named. The project involves the processing of an average of 15,000 STPD of andesitic ore, mineralized largely with Chalcopyrite, at an overall plant availability rating of 90 percent. Project life is nominally 15 years. Design for the plant and its ancillary facilities was undertaken by Bechtel Corporation with procurement and construction management by Canadian Bechtel Limited. Construction began in June 1970 and first ore was introduced into process in March 1972. This paper concerns itself only with the project tailing system. The processing plant is located on a bench of glacial stream gravels which overlooks the river canyon. This site represented the only relatively flat area of sufficient size to accomodate processing facilities near to the ore- bodies. Reference is made to Figs. 1 and 2 showing the relationship of project features in plan and profile.

Continuous monitoring of carbon monoxide and other fire-related parameters by means of an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) has been used by the mining industry for early fire detection in underground mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a project to integrate real-time AMS sensor data with NIOSH’s mine fire simulation program, MFIRE 3.0, to simulate and predict the spread of smoke that would provide assistance to mine fire emergency response personnel. Determining the heat release rate of a fire using the monitored sensor data was a critical component of the successful completion of this project. NIOSH researchers developed a direct method to calculate the heat release rate when a fire is within close range of sensors. However, this method is only applicable to the case where a fire occurs in AMS-monitored airways. This paper presents an improved method for determining the fire heat release rate for complicated scenarios where a fire is distant from sensors and airflow splits and merges are present. The method was validated using a fullscale diesel fuel fire test conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division and can help mine operators and safety personnel make informed decisions during a fire emergency.

Fire hazards can cause severe and irrecoverable damage to reinforced concrete (RC) tunnel linings, threatening the serviceability and resilience of transportation networks. This paper first examines the existing methodologies that are used to classify damage to tunnel linings from fire. These approaches are then supplemented with the results of advanced modeling and inputs from industry experts to propose new fire damage/ repair classifications with the associated thresholds. The results of the presented research can be used to guide fire risk assessment as well as the performance-based design of tunnel fire protection.

Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterizations of gold ores. However, this is not a simple tusk due to low gold grade, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. Using the same sections of a gold-rich ore, a critical test was performed using an optical microscope (OM) and an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences, such as the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM. This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel's Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.
