Sulfuric acid mist is an undesired by-product of the copper electrowinning process, caused by oxygen evolution at the anode which entrains droplets of the acidic copper electrolyte solution. As the oxygen moves to the surface of the cell, these droplets become aerosolized resulting in acid mist. The addition of chemical anti-misting agents to the copper electrolyte is a common mitigation technique. This paper details Syensqo’s laboratory development of a new environmentally friendly acid mist suppressant, ACORGA® EW98. The product exhibits excellent acid mist suppression and it is fully compatible with the adjacent solvent extraction process. Lab and pilot test results are reviewed ahead of future planned industrial trial testing.

Once mining compromises the stability of a rock mass, the dangerous task of roof bolting begins. Many attempts have been made to automate this process, but there are still many refinements that need to be made. In the past, roof bolting modules were designed around the abilities of a human operator. Currently, researchers are taking a new approach that focuses on designing modules that can utilize bolting methods that are easily automated. A non-rotating anchor that is locked into position by a linear force (as opposed to a rotational force) was designed by researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Once the bolt is secured in the bolt-hole by the anchor, the bolt is tensioned and a collet is used to secure the other end of the bolt. This process replaces the traditional bolt-nut fastening method. This program is part of an effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to automate the coal mining process.

Constructed by stonemasons over 120 years ago, a portion of the Trout Brook Storm Sewer Interceptor (TBI) owned and operated by the Capitol Region Watershed District in Saint Paul, Minnesota, needed rehabilitation. A routine inspection of the 10-foot limestone block tunnel revealed degraded and missing mortar between the blocks, allowing significant infiltration and soil migration through the tunnel joints. Conditions, including damaged and missing blocks, were considerably worse in a 250-foot-long segment beneath a busy mainline railroad corridor. Barr’s solution included tuck-pointing to repair the mortar joints, shotcrete overlay, and construction of a hybrid cast-in-place/shotcrete “tunnel within a tunnel” to support the mainline railroad loads.

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. Differential reduction and expansion or shrinkage of hematite under the influence of intimately associated foreign oxides may be a source of stress formation and sinter degradation during blast furnace reduction. To study specific effects, synthetically pre-pared hematite powder evenly doped with 1% by weight of several elements present as oxides, was pressed into tablets and sintered at high temperature prior to reduction. Continuous thermo-gravimetric and dilatometric analyses were per-formed on the sintered tablets as these were being subjected to reduction under simulated blast furnace time/temperature/gas composition conditions up to 1183 K. These findings were coupled with observations on the microstructure of tablets removed from various stages of the reduction process.

environmental and social/political changes the world is currently experiencing. Three of major challenges facing the mining industry today are: water scarcity, unpredictable weather conditions that generate a risk of tailings dam failures as well as the correlating social pressure and government regulations that prevent the development of new or expanded tailings dam projects. It is estimated the total number of active, inactive and closed storage facilities globally is over 8,500 containing over 217 km3 of tailings (46% are from copper mining)1 which at some point will need to be addressed. Technologically, there are several solutions for tailings management, including conventional ponds, thickened tails, paste backfill and filtered dry stack tailings. The use of pressure filters, for tailings dewatering is currently being evaluated and often selected as the preferred technology where dry stacking is the chosen solution for residue disposal. This is mainly due to the pressure filters ability and flexibility to address and achieve the current challenging aspects of tailings processing including: • Extremely high capacities of >80,000 dry tons/day • Lower ore grades which require finer grinding and result in a higher amount fine fractions and clay content • Residual moisture targets required for the geotechnical specifications for dry stacking

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral. It has unique properties, which combined with its low cost, make it suitable for use in a wide variety of products. Kaolin is defined as "any of a group of clay minerals, including kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and anauxite, with a two-layer crystal in which silicon-oxygen and aluminum-hydroxyl sheets alternate; approximate composition is AlZ03-ZSiOZ-1/ ZHZO".-The kaolin discussed here is composed chiefly of the mineral kaolinite. Kaolin is also commonly referred to as "china clay". Approximately 4.9 kkg (5.4 million short tons) of kaolin was sold or used in the United States, and .8 million kkg (.9 million short tons) was -exported in 1974. In domestic usage, paper coating and filling accounted for 43% of the total, fol-2/ lowed by refractories, rubber, and ceramics.-Figure 1 shows the amount of kaolin sold or used by domestic producers for specified uses for the years 1963-3/ 1973.- Kaolin was produced at mines in 14 states, but Georgia accounted for 75% of the 1974 domestic production. The average value for all grades was $36.00/kkg 4/ ($32. 67/ton) .-

Compagnie Minière Espérance mines a primary gold orebody in an openpit. The ore is processed through crushing, primary gravity concentration, grinding and secondary gravity separation, generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analysis of the material in the pond has indicated a residual gold grade sufficient to justify a chemical treatment process to recover the gold. However, direct cyanidation would require a prohibitively large installation for the site, which is located in a remote rainforest environment. It was decided to test the feasibility of preconcentration using flotation. As lab tests proved up the technical feasibility of the flotation process, an on-site pilot operation was carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for industrial circuit sizing. Data collected during the pilot campaign was used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM? PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain an acceptable fine gold recovery from a small amount of concentrate.

The long hole open stoping (LHOS) method is widely used in underground mining. While methods to predict stable stope geometries are well established, the ability to maintain a stable back often assumes effective ground support across the full stope span. The efficacy of the support strategy is dependent on rock jointing, quality, density, top cut width and height, and the type, amount, and orientations of bolts installed. However, it is becoming increasingly common for operators to assume narrow top cuts in service of wider stope spans with minimal bolting coverage. Failure to account for the required top cut drift size and support requirements can ultimately lead to raveling type instabilities along stope shoulders that result in back collapse. A new method has been developed to evaluate the minimum top cut dimension necessary to accommodate wider stope spans with various rock bolting configurations. Due to the economic impacts of top cut development and support, this is a critical consideration in the accurate costing and scheduling of a LHOS operation. Tables 1 lists the acronyms are used throughout this paper.

The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

A major problem in future discoveries of base metals is their "explorability". By this I mean an exploration program must be designed that assures accurate assessment of the potential for ore, but is within reasonable budgetary constraints. As we are compelled to depend more and more on non-outcropping prospects, "blind" deposits, and as drilling costs multiply, the costs of exploration increase significantly. Solutions to the problem of defining exploration targets are influenced by our conceptions of the origin and recognition o f conditions that localize ore. The maxim that "elephants should be sought in elephant country" presumes we can recognize elephant country. This paper presents a suggested origin for some mineral deposits, and their controls; particularly those termed ?Mississippi Valley type". Tennessee is used as an example of the ideas offered. Mining districts designated "Mississippi Valley type" are, and have long been, the principal sources of barite, fluorite, lead and zinc ores in the United States and elsewhere throughout the world. A large volume of literature is available describing this class of ore deposits, explaining their habitat, and invoking genetic models for them. The quality of this literature is notably uneven, some of it demonstrably erroneous, and much of it is restricted to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to a single mine, or even a single stope. Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

"In oil fields that have been depleted with conventional surface oil wells but still contain significant reserves, an extraction alternative that has been constructed recently consists of a drilling gallery below the oil-bearing formation at the bottom of a 1,200-ft deep shaft where upward sloping wells are being drilled to allow oil collection by gravity. The gallery is 92-ft diameter with a flat ceiling supported by rock bolts and shotcrete structurally connected to the shaft liner, which doubles as a large tension support element. A special excavation sequence was implemented for the gallery to maximize arching in the stress above the large diameter gallery. The gallery was located in competent sandstone, constructed with sequential excavation methods, and designed with a 3D finite element model. Special consideration was given to optimizing the gallery location to take advantage of the geology for construction and support while giving good positioning to the well drilling equipment. BACKGROUND Brierley Associates was contracted to provide both design and construction management services for an approximately 1,165-ft deep, 18-ft excavated diameter vertical shaft that opens to a 92-ft diameter flat roof gallery. The geotechnical data for the site was based on information available from literature and from data obtained during core drilling and from in-situ testing in a 1250-ft deep borehole. Wire line coring was conducted using a HQ, 10-ft long core barrel with a mud-rotary drilling method through sedimentary bedrock. The geometry of the shaft and the bottom gallery is shown in Figure 1(a). GEOLOGIC SETTING AND STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY The stratigraphy at the site includes a series of interbedded marine limestone, shale, claystone, siltstone, sandstone, and chert units. Limestone and shale are the predominant lithologies in the upper approximately 675 ft, while the lower portion contains five distinct sandstone units and more abundant shale, claystone, siltstone, and coal than the upper zone. A cherty sandstone at a depth of 1,130 below ground surface (bgs) was encountered. At a depth of about 1,000 ft to 1,116 ft bgs, a non-marine sandstone unit was encountered. This sandstone is the hydrocarbon bearing layer. Joints and fractures observed in the limestone had dips ranging from 0 to 90 deg. from horizontal with joint and fracture surfaces that ranged from planar to irregular and smooth to rough. Several, near vertical shear planes with slickensides were observed with surfaces that were generally smooth and planar. RQD values for the limestone ranged from 0 to 100 percent but in general were good to excellent."

The remarks that follow are based substan¬tially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which have been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more-difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1 ½ . The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present.

In the production of Pig Iron - Limestone, Coke and Iron Ore pellets are changed to the blast furnace and reacted at approximately 2,800 degrees F. The resultant products are molten iron and a molten slag - not unlike lava. The molten slag stream is channeled into open pits, cooled with water, crushed and sized for various industrial applications. The production of steel from pig iron in open hearth, B0P, BOF and electric furnaces results in somewhat similar slags: but since free lime is normally the flux, the resultant slags are not satisfactory for use in cement pastes. When exposed to water, the lime slakes, expands by 250% and ruptures the concrete. Thus, the slag discussed first is Blast Furnace Slag composed of 30 to 40% Silica (SiO2) Alumina (AL202) 7 to 16% Lime (CaO) 32 to 45% and Magnesia (MgO) 5 to 15%. The oxides do not exist as free oxides but rather as silicates and alumino silicates which are chemicall inert. Since transportation costs limit the area of use, blast furnace slag can only be found in concrete products produced within 60 to 100 miles of a blast furnace operation. Even within these areas where slag is in heavy supply, quite often the use of slag is minimal for concrete aggregate and the major outlet is road base.

Solvent extraction as a method of purifying and concentrating metal values from solution has become a standard hydrometallurgical operation for recovery of both uranium and vanadium, and within the past two years it has been put into operation in a commercial plant for recovery of copper from leach solutions. In this first full scale solvent extraction plant for recovery of copper operated by Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation near Miami, Arizona, a kerosene solution of an organic compound, LIX-64® is used to selectively extract the copper from the dilute acidic copper sulfate leach liquor obtained from heap leach operations. The copper is back extracted from the solvent into a stripping solution which is fed to an electrolysis circuit producing cathode copper for sale.
