CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, are upgrading their existing particle accelerator for the next generation of experiments and have three major packages of underground construction work in progress. Each package involves the construction of shafts, cavern, tunnels and surface buildings. This paper gives an overview of CERN, the LHC Project and a more detailed discussion of design process, design review and construction works of Experimental Point 5. The LHC works at Point 5 include two large shafts, two major parallel caverns with a total span of 50 m, which are separated by a 7 m wide and 28 m high concrete pillar, and a system of secondary tunnels and caverns. The overburden ground consists of around 50 m of water bearing moraine (silty, clayey gravels and sands) overlying 20 mof molasse, which consists of horizontally bedded marls and sandstones. The shaft shave been constructed with ground freezing, primary concrete lining, membrane and secondary slip formed concrete lining. The concrete pillar was then excavated and concreted in advance of excavation of the two caverns. Cavern construction includes primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by waterproof membrane and primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by water proof membrane and insitu concrete secondary lining.

Laboratory testing was completed to determine the effectiveness of a fiberglass cable bolt (FCB) as a cuttable rock support for a continuous, hard-rock mining method. The FCB consists of four Polystal tendons combined in a node/antinode fashion, with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) spacers forming the anti-nodes. The largest ultimate pull-out load achieved by the FCB was 22 t (48,400 lb) at 89% of the tendons' theoretical pullout load. This premature tendon failure is accredited to: • differential stresses within the tendons and • differential tendon displacement. An increase in pull-out resistance for a given embedment length is due to: • increased bond area, • reduced interfacial shear and • "wedge" effect. The critical embedment length was found to be 40% less than for conventional steel cable bolts (SCB) at a 127-mm (5-in.) node spacing. An FCB can have up to a 92% increase in load-carrying capacity over a conventional SCB at equal embedment lengths. The load carrying capacity is equivalent to SCB at a 960-mm (37.8-in.) embedment length. Though the FCB is 7.5% more expensive than the conventional SCB (installed), this cost may be offset by increased performance. FCBs are a potentially viable support alternative for continuous hard-rock mining.

The Homes take Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota has a yearly production of 1,868,741 tons of ore produced from horizontal cut-and-fill stopes and timber cut-and-fill stopes. This production, in addition to the necessary development (drifts and raises), requires 5,168,271 feet of drilling annually. The rock for the most part consists of quartz; mica schist; and cummingtonite schist; and must be considered as relatively hard. Penetration rates average about 15 inches per minute using an operating air pressure of 100 psi. The rock is tough, rather than brittle, and dulling occurs quite rapidly. The average regrind period is approximately 19 feet per regrind using a 1-7/16 inch carbide bit. At the present time, all drilling is accomplished with 2-5/8 inch bore airleg mounted drills, and 2-3/4 inch and 3-inch diameter bore -stopers (raising only). These machines are all direct striking, with 4-1/4 inch chucks. 7/8-inch hexagonal carbon drill steel with forged collars are used in conjunction with 1-7/16 inch multi-use, threaded, carbide bits. 62,793 rods, and 16,234 bits are used to maintain the yearly production. The number of rods noted are the rods that were sent: underground, both new and reconditioned.

Dundee Cement Company was incorporated in 1958. The equity capital for the venture was supplied by a Swiss firm called Holderbank Financier and a group of its principals. Holderbank Financier, a holding company, is a direct outgrowth of Holderbank Cement Company, a company founded in 1912 by the father of Dr Hans Gygi who is the president of Dundee Cement Company and a member of the Board of Holderbank Financier. From one plant in 1912 located in Zurich, Switzerland, Holderbank grew to its present size of 32 plants in 17 countries, having a capacity of 90 million barrels of cement per year. Dundee Cement Company constructed its first cement plant near the little town of Dundee, Michigan. This site was selected because there is an abundance of limestone and clay of the correct chemical composition for cement manufacture and the deposit was advantageously located near the large population centers of Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, and Chicago. Construction of the 5. 5 million barrel, two kiln, plant was completed and the plant started up in the fall of 1959. After a year or two of the usual problems in a new plant and the expected difficulty of breaking into a nearly saturated market, Dundee began to prosper.

From laboratory research activities during the past five years, it is now evident that effective flotation separations can be achieved with the high-capacity air-sparged hydrocyclone. The effectiveness of the equipment has been demonstrated on a pilot-scale basis (1 tph) for a number of mineral commodities including coal, copper, gold, and industrial minerals using a nominal 5-cm x 50-cm system with separation efficiencies equivalent to those achieved by conventional flotation machines. The high specific capacity of the air-sparged hydrocyclone (100 to 600 tpd per cubic foot of cell volume for a nominal 5 cm x 50 cm system compared to 1 to 2 tpd per cubic foot of cell volume for conventional columns and mechanical machines) makes it especially well-suited for the pro- cessing of low-grade ore. As a result of these pilot-scale successes, a number of plant-scale test programs are planned for larger-diameter units to establish wear characteristics and scale-up relationships for design purposes. The status of the air-sparged hydrocyclone technology is reviewed in the present paper, including a description of the system, fundamental considerations of flotation mechanisms, general discussion regarding the effect of control variables, and the significance of feed characteristics.

The hydrochemical method, which is based on the separation of aluminium oxide and silicon oxide by the hydrothermal decomposition of aluminosilicates by alkaline solutions in the presence of calcium oxide, can be effectively used for the complex processing of high-silicon aluminium ores. In this case, the silica is bound to a slightly soluble compound: Na20.2Ca0.2Si02•H20 (under the conditions: [&k]= 9, CaO/SiO2 = 1.05, alkali concentration in the solution: over 300 g/l Na20, T = 240...300 °C). If alkaline solutions of 100...150 g/l Na20 concentration are used, Ca0•SiO2•H20 or 2Ca0•Si02.0.5H20 compounds, depending on calcium oxide dosage, are formed at 280...320 °C. New methods for the crystallization of Na20.Al203.2.5H2O from concentrated alkaline solutions rand low-concentration solutions are proposed to isolate aluminium from solutions. The hydrochemical method, which involves no sintering process allows one to decrease the expenditure of heat by a factor of two, to reduce the investment and to exclude the pollution of the ambient air by dust-laden gases. Semiautogenous (SAG) ball mills are being increasingly used today for the coarse grinding of a range of ores, including gold, copper and iron. Larger mines are demanding mills with larger throughputs. This has led to some remarkable developments in mill diameters and installed powers. Conventional design principles - mills with trunnion bearings - have reached their limitations. This article describes one SAG mill with a slide-shoe arrangement and Krupp Polysius' Combiflex twin drive. In August 1997, the world's largest SAG mill with a slide-shoe arrangement was commissioned in Queensland, Australia, operating as a wet mill. The inside diameter is 10.4 x 5.1 m (34 x 17 ft) effective grinding length. The 1.36-ktlh (1,500-stph) SAG mill is driven by two Combiflex drives (twin drives with 2 x 5,500-MW or 7,375-hp installed motor power) in conjunction with a girth gear (outside diameter 11,890 mm or 468 in.). Commissioning of the SAG mill was completed with no notable technical difficulties. The plant runs continuously except for planned maintenance stoppages and process-specific reasons. As this article is written, the machine has been in operation for about 8,000 hours without major problems.

Areas of bubble contact were delineated for topaz and tourmaline in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulfate, phosphate, oxalate, and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique. Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 5.6 for topaz and 6.6 for tourmaline, in the presence of chloride ion. Flotation below the p.z.c. was, however, extended by citrate, oxalate, phosphate, sulfate, and fluoride ions. Oxalate, citrate, and fluoride ions displayed the greatest pH range of activation, followed by phosphate and sulfate ions. Chloride ion acted as an indifferent electrolyte. Topaz was selectively activated with respect to tourmaline by fluoride and phosphate ions. Topaz was activated by fluoride ion between pH 2.4 and 5.6. Tourmaline flotation in this pH range was virtually insignificant. Topaz was activated by phosphate ion between pH 4.9 and 7.4. Tourmaline flotation in this pH range was only partial. Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to very stable metal ion species thought to be formed on the surface of each mineral.

In June of 2002 Hilti North America received the first MSHA permissible approval for usage of a powder actuated tool device in a gassy mine atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of this commonly utilized tool technology in the construction industry, to the underground gassy mining industry over the course of the last 5 years. Prior to June of 2002, underground gassy mining industry had attached materials such as ventilation curtains, power cables, communication cables, signage, and other materials by either manually driving individual spads or nails into the mine roof or rib or by attachment to existing roof bolt bearing plates. The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool is portable, durable, and lightweight (4.5 pounds). The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool system is powered by Hilti .27 caliber permissible explosive boosters. The energy force of the Hilti .27 booster?s acts on a captive piston principle in the Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool, that applies the setting force for the direct fastening to the individual fastener chosen for the application by the end user. Each year Hilti can be called upon by MSHA to provide booster materials for re-testing per our Hilti DX PAD 1/00 approval.

SL-type continuous centrifugal separator with injection flow (Injection Flowing Film Centrifugation, IFFC) for separating fine and ultra-fine minerals has been developed recently in China and it is capable of recovering particles down to one micron in size. In this paper, the principle of its separation is discussed. IFFC is a special transient pulsating film which combines both thin film jigging and thin film concentration functions. It not only can intensify the looseness and stratification of the settled particles, but also create a hydraulic weir effect to improve recovery of fines and ultra- fines and significantly improve the performance of thin film separation. In a Chinese tin gravity concentrator, SL devices, SL-1200s (capacity 1.5-2.0 ton/hr) and SL-600s (capacity 0.5 ton/hr) were applied to treat -1 0 micron cassiterite slime(removed as tailings at the past) and to replace the old tin flotation system(-74+10 micron slime). The plant results show that 50-60% of the cassiterite can be recovered from -10 micron slime with an enrichment ratio of 10-12. Particle down to one micron were recovered. Under optimal conditions, the recovery from -74+10 micron slime can reach more than 85%. The recoverable size range can be determined by calculation.

In 1988, the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) published an information bulletin stating that whole diesel exhaust should be considered a probable carcinogen. Since then, regulations across Canada and the United States (Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA) have looked at appropriate exposure limits for underground mine workers. In Canada, an interim standard of 1.5 mg/m3 Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) has been adopted by some provinces and is being looked at by others. MSHA is considering levels as low as 0.5 mg/m3 soot. Golden Giant, being aware of regulatory developments, decided to look at means of reducing diesel particulate on thier large production machinery. This machinery (LHDs and haulage trucks) is powered by Detroit Diesel 71N Series engines and is used to produce 3000 tonnes of ore/day with a longhole mining technique. Having looked at the various control technologies, it was decided to evaluate the potential of using diesel particulate filters with a copper-based fuel additive for regeneration (the process by which collected particulate is burned off). This paper outlines the control technology used and the results of the field evaluation indicating the benefits to the underground mine worker.

Gold-silver and copper-gold deposits with high-temperature wallrock alteration of Ca-Mg-Fe-Al silicates occur in ca. 3.0 Ga old greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. The deposits are hosted by amphibolite-facies komatiites, basalts and BIF, controlled by ductile shear zones and located within the contact-metamorphic aureoles of composite granodiorite-granite batholiths. Disseminated sulfides and free gold form foliation-parallel ore zones in a gangue of anhydrous silicates (garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine), hydrous silicates (amphibole, biotite) and calcite. The deposits may be classified on the basis of their dominant economic metals as: 1(1) Gold skarns with substantial silver as by-product, represented by the Marvel Loch mine (production: 2,200,000 t at 3.5 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, loellingite, arsenopyrite, galena, gold and magnetite. (2) Gold skarns with low silver contents, represented by the Nevoria mine (production:1,850,000 t at 3.4 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, gold, Bi-tellurides and magnetite. (3) Copper-gold skarns, represented by the Elverdton mine (production: 850,000 t at .7 5 Cu, 0.81 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association magnetite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, gold and Ag-Bi tellurides.

The US economy grew at a rate of 4% in 1994 and the gross domestic product rose to $6.74 trillion. With 261 million people - 605,000 in mining, including petroleum -the United States has l 10 million dwelling units and 200 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing units authorized in 1994 rose 14% to 1.4 million units. New car production rose 11 % to 6.6 million units, while truck and bus production rose 30% to 5.2 million units. The inflation rate was less than 3% and the prime rate of interest averaged 7.15%. The producer price index (1982 = 100) for fuels and related products and power was down 4% to 78, while metals and metal products rose 5% to 125. Chemicals and allied products rose 3% to 132, and non-metallic mineral products rose 3% to 124. The merchandise trade deficit rose 25% to $166 billion. Disorder in the former Soviet Union led to substantial dumping of mineral materials. With vast mineral resources, the former Soviet Union land area totaled 22.4 million km2 (8.6 million sq miles). In comparison, the North Ameri¬can Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) area (United States, Canada and Mexico) totals 21.4 million km2 (8.3 million sq miles).

West Virginia's economy has been closely linked with coal. West Virginia is consistently one of the top three coal-producing states. Its 149 Mt (164 mil¬lion st) produced in 1992 represented 16.5% of total US coal production. In recent years, the state's economy has experienced a diversification away from its traditional employment base of min¬ing and heavy manufacturing. However, the coal industry remains an integral part of the lives of West Virginians. Coal is mined in 33 of the state's 55 counties. In many of these counties, the coal industry is the largest private employer and contributor to the economy. West Virginia has three major coal-producing regions. The northern region produces coal high in gas and sulfur content (steam coal). It is consumed primarily by utility and industrial markets. The southeast region produces high-grade coal low in sulfur content but high in carbons and Btu (metallurgical coal). The southwest region produces metallurgical and steam coal. The high-grade metallurgical coal is used in the production of coke for steel manufacturing. Metallurgical coal also comprises the majority of coal exported from the United States. During 1993, West Virginia was the country's largest exporter of coal, accounting for 44.5% of total US coal exports.

Taboca Mining is one of the largest producers of tin in the world. In its pilot plant, significant amounts of a middling of 90% xenotime (YPO4) and 10% zircon (ZrSi04) are produced. Until now, these minerals of this ore body could not be separated successfully. This paper presents some aspects of the fundamentals of xenotime and zircon flotation with anionic (fatty acids) and cationic (amine acetate) collector, as well as the influence of the superficial leaching of the minerals with cold HCI and HNO3 on the floatability. The mineralogical studies showed that both minerals are optically liberated in -212+106 µm size fraction. Surprisingly, SEM analysis indicated that both xenotime and zircon contain very small inclusions (1-5 µm) of thorite (ThSiO4). On the other hand, zircon is fairly metamictizated giving rise to malacon. Zeta potential tests showed that the isoelectric points of xenotime and zircon correspond to a pH value of 4.5 and 4.7, respectively.The pretreatment with HCI and HNO3 displaced the isoeletric point (IEP) of the minerals to the left. The microflotation tests indicated that the floatability of both untreated and treated minerals are quite similar in the presence of the collectors studied in this work. Adsorption mechanisms are also suggested.

After two disappointing years where most industrial minerals posted decreasing production, 1981 saw an increase in production over 1980, or at least in status quo. Several commodities did, however, post significant gains. For example, bromine posted a 14% increase; fluorspar production dropped 21% in 1980, but gained 24% in 1981; and sulfur production increased. However, perlite was off 13% and manufactured sodium sulfate off 18% in 1981, while natural sodium sulfate production remained almost even with 1980. In fact, many industrial minerals production either remained constant, increased, or decreased only slightly over 1980. Increasing energy costs had their impact on industrial minerals in 1981. Hopefully, the recent downward trend in energy costs, at least gasoline, will financially help some of the more marginal plants. The 1979 shortage of rail cars that did not carry through 1980 also did not carry through in 1981. Rail rates increased 12.8% over-all last year, while average freight rates for industrial minerals increased 15.5%, according to Neil Johnson, consultant. Also, the trucking industry posted a 5-6% decrease in rates due to deregulation. All in all, we in the industrial minerals section seem to be holding our own at least. Stanley J. Early studies in the carbonate leaching of uranium ores led to the investigation of pressure leaching as a method to enhance the dissolution of the metal values in this system. The initial investigations conducted at the University of British Columbia supplemented by the work done by the group at the A.E.C. Grand Junction pilot plant, all established the higher efficiency and better economics of the alkaline pressure leaching system. This work was conducted either in laboratory autoclaves using oxygen overpressures, or in pilot plant sized horizontal autoclaves with air as an oxidant. Both of these testing vehicles utilized agitation provided by relatively high speed impellers (300 to 700 rpm), which apparently enhanced the oxidation of the uranium to the hexavalent state. The installation of vertical autoclaves on a production scale, which through design considerations require relatively slow agitator speeds (68 rpm), led to the studies of the utilization efficiency of the air addition and the use of catalytic type oxidants to effect a greater usage of the oxygen added through the aeration system. In addition to investigating the effects of the chemical additives, studies were also conducted on the effect of different impeller configurations on the extraction of uranium, which in itself is a measure of oxidation efficiency. The material presented in this paper was compiled in the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, and the majority of the data was obtained in the Homestake- Sapin Partners mill, located at Grants, New Mexico.

The Federal Coal Management Program represents the culmination of several years of effort by the Department of the Interior (001) to reformulate the manner in which coal owned by the United States is leased and developed. These efforts began in 1970 with a study by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which indicated that unless drastic changes were made in. the federal coal leasing procedures, federal coal lands would be leased almost for the asking while production of coal from those lands had been decreasing. Consequently, informal action was taken in 1971, which resulted in no further leasing being authorized until February, 1973. At that time, a formal moratorium on most coal leasing was established, with exceptions granted only for leases needed to satisfy short-term needs such as maintaining existing mines or supplying reserves for new contracts in the immediate future. This leasing policy embodied a long term objective of developing an entirely new planning system for federal coal leasing, as well as to schedule the preparation of a programmatic impact statement for this new system. As a result of the 1973 moratorium and the ensuing application of short-term criteria, only 10 federal coal leases (covering approximately 30,177 acres) were issued from February, 1973, through January l, 1976.

The economics of geologic exploration have changed materially in the past decade primarily due to the change in three basic factors, namely, increased wages and salaries, increased cost of materials, and a greater complexity in methods of exploration. Following the general economic pattern over the past ten years, exploration costs, have, in general, increased, although there is one heartening exception. A comparative picture is complicated because of advances in techniques which ensue from the introduction of new methods and devices largely for aerial exploratory work, Some of these methods were either in their infancy or unknown before World War II. Geological exploration may well be considered as a form of applied research. True, it has peculiarities from this standpoint some advantageous, others disadvantageous, Some of the advantages lie in the fact that exploration success does not involve the production of a new product which necessitates advertising expense and marketing problems. In normal times there is a well established market for the fruits of a successful mineral find. The outstanding disadvantage of exploration lies in the enigma of deciding when to quit if the sought fop prize is elusive. In the search for buried treasure, man?s curiosity is apt to color his judgment. Even the so-called detached scientist may fall 'all too readily into the wishful thinking of the old- time prospector who is lured on by the thought that the next pull from the drill hole, or the next round from the face will reveal a bonanza. It involves mature judgment and experience to ascertain the stage in exploration when further work is not justified.

The environmental liabilities of coal waste disposal sites can have a major impact on a mining project's economic viability. Developing a waste disposal site is no longer simply an exercise in completing paperwork to obtain a permit, with the proliferation of environmental regulations in recent years, managing disposal sites now requires design creativity, short term and long term planning and detailed monitoring to maximize the benefits to the mining company. Operating costs and future capital costs for expansion of existing sites, new site development and regulatory compliance should be reviewed periodically and considered in the overall management plan. This paper discusses various management methods that are being employed in the industry to improve waste disposal operations both environmentally and profitably.
