"What do you think are the most important topics in mineral processing today? It is a question that begs to be asked when more than 100 of some of the best and brightest in Colorado mineral processing and their invited guests are gathered in one room. They are there for the 66th Annual Colorado MPD Meeting held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs: three days of finely curated talks and social events where participation was strong, and information was exchanged and connections forged in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.Water, tailings and social licenseNot surprisingly, water management, with the associated issues of tailings and social license, was high on the minds of those present. The Mount Polley and Samarco tailings dam failures have had repercussions across the industry. “There are big challenges with respect to tailings, and social and environmental pressures to find better ways to treat them,” said Steve Hearn of Huntsman Corp., a view echoed by Bob Kilborn of Kilborn Group LLC. Metso Minerals director Keith Butler said, “Water conservation is a key issue today. Many mining activities are now located in remote areas, so it has social and economic impacts on mining operations.” For Brian Olson of Samuel Engineering, wastewater and reclaimed-water treatment is interesting.Fittingly, the first talk of the meeting was on dry stack tailings by Michael Blois of Takraf USA, who went over both the advantages and disadvantages. “The average now is over one tailings dam failure a year,” Blois said, “and that is one too many.” But the technology may not be the right fit for all projects. In his talk on the KSM project, Jay Layman, president and COO of Seabridge Gold, showed how it isn’t practical for KSM and how Seabridge reached the decision on a cyclone sand tailings managementfacility as the preferred management strategy.The luncheon keynote also dealt with a tailings pond spill, but of a different kind. Bob Schafer, chief executive of Eagle Mines Management, spoke on the federal missteps that led to the spill into the Animas River from the Gold King Mine, a mine that had been a dry mine throughout its life and up to the 1990s."

This study aims to provide industrial perspectives on the current U.S. metal mining engineering education and areas for improvement. An online survey was designed to seek opinions from the U.S. mining industry. Findings indicated a shortage of qualified graduates from the current U.S. metal mining engineering education system. The qualifications that need to be improved include engineering sciences underlying mining methods, mining design experience, mining feasibility study, the connection between theory and practice, and understanding of the overall mining operation. The survey also identified future desired qualifications, such as the ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed and sufficient field experience. Respondents recommended enhancing collaborations between industry and academia.

While respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust that arises in industrial production mostly emanates from point sources and can be well mitigated, the extraction of dust is much more difficult in underground construction, since locally generated dust spreads widely. Analysis of dust measurements shows that RCS values are difficult to predict, and effective dedusting systems are required to comply with permissible exposure limits (PEL) in breathed air. Dedusting systems are effective near the tunnel face, while dedusting of working areas away from the tunnel face is difficult or even impossible. In general, there is little temporal influence on the tunnelling work—except for drill and blast excavation—which makes it necessary to remove the deduster and ductwork from the face area. Concurrent work in the tunnel is affected by the backflowing air mass of ventilation and therefore the quality of this air mass must be considered. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE), e.g., dust filter masks, is considered the least-desirable safety measure available. However, for certain individual operations in the tunnelling process, the use of PPE cannot be avoided, especially if other technical mitigation measures are not possible. In tunnels with small cross sections for example, dedusting systems often cannot be accommodated and PPE must be used instead. This raises the question of whether the use of PPE can be avoided by designing appropriate excavation cross sections and allowing for the implementation of technically engineered mitigation measures. The paper highlights problems with dedusting measures and shows possible ways to achieve OSHA compliance.

With its 2011 acquisition of rival equipment company Bucyrus International, Caterpillar added underground mining and large shovels to its line of products and further solidified its standing as the leading mining equipment manufacturer in the world with solutions for every aspect of mining. When Caterpillar spent $8.8 billion to acquire Bucyrus, the global mining business was flourishing, as mining companies around the world worked to keep up with demands for nearly every commodity. Flash forward to 2013, and the global mining landscape looks very different. Lower demand for raw material from China and India and falling commodity prices have forced most mining companies to pull back on their production. The reductions from the mining industry have hit equipment makers like Caterpillar and Komatsu hard. In October, Caterpillar reported that its quarterly earnings had fallen 44 percent. The changing conditions have also changed the narrative from Caterpillar and other equipment makers to customers from offering solutions to move the most tons per hour, to now offering solutions for the lowest cost per ton. In September, Caterpillar hosted some of its mining customers and the trade press at its Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ to talk about its range of products, from its MineStar System designed to help increase efficiency through better equipment management and planning, all the way up to the massive Cat 7495 and 7495HF electric rope shovel lines acquired through the Bucyrus takeover

The floor-heave and no-floor-heave phenomena at a western U.S. coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria. Although the previous numerical study using FLAC3D very reasonably demonstrated these phenomena, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. As a result, the latter models predicted floor heave that agreed with relative amounts of observed heave from each gateroad system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

The construction and modification of tunnels brings a requirement for precise measurement of convergence and divergence to safeguard the structure, maintain safety and provide the assurance needed to maintain efficient progress. Established methods include manual measurement using tape extensometers and automated methods using photogrammetry and automated total stations. Drawbacks include the need for frequent access, power supply, cabling, and cost. The paper describes how the development of reliable optical displacement sensors (ODS) has changed the landscape. ODS sensors are connected to a long-range wireless mesh communications network via a solar-powered gateway outside the tunnel, with data instantly transmitted to the internet. A sensor and its reflector target can be installed in 20 minutes and is maintenance free for a decade. Tunnel movement is measured to sub-millimeter precision with repeatability of ±0.15 mm. Integration of a triaxial tilt sensor allows slope distance to be converted to horizontal and vertical changes and allows rotational movement to be determined. Applications include new-build and long-term structural health monitoring. Case studies will be given, including the refurbishment of rail tunnels in Spain where the ODS measured movement during track lowering in a situation where no other automated system was considered viable.

Developing a strategic underground mine plan is challenging and investigating multiple scenarios may take weeks. This process can be sped up using the Theory of Constraints to isolate the bottleneck mining activity and simplify the mine schedule process. This paper presents a technique to apply the Theory of Constraints to test multiple cutoff grade scenarios in Mineable Shape Optimiser and quickly produce many high-level production-based schedules that can be easily interpreted using stope-by-stope graphs, the Hill of Value, and through incremental return analysis.

The availability of concentrated brines rich iodide, bromide, chloride, sodium, magnesium and calcium ions has led to extensive chemical manufacturing operations in Michigan. The brines, ranging 1,000 to 8,000 feet below the earth's surface, are the remnants of ancient oceans which periodically covered and receded over the land area which is now Michigan. After pumping the brine to the surface, iodine and bromine are extracted via an oxidative process. Iodine and bromine find application in catalysts, disinfectants, flame retardants, oil field fluids, film, and gasoline additives. Addition of alkalinity to the brine precipitates magnesium hydroxide, used in high quality refractories needed for steel manufacture. The brines are also the country's primary source of calcium chloride, employed in ice and dust control.

Strength evaluation programs, based on sub- jecting a number of 5-718 inch (0.15 m) diameter core samples from highly fractured or poorly consolidated rock, to triaxial compression tests, have been successfully completed. An innovative approach was required since con- ventional methods with similar materials had not produced reliable results. Drilling methods were modified, and specially designed transparent core barrels were used. Sample preparation was successfully accomplished by using speciallydesignedtools and unorthodox hand- ling methods. Initial tests were carried out on weathered oxides from an open pit copper mine. The technique was later used successfully where the test material was weak, friable coal. The procedures used offer a practical method of testing weak materials where conventional methods would not be successful.

High pressure grinding rolls have been utilized in various operations during the past four decades, simply due to their inherent mode of breakage that offers metallurgical benefits with pronounced energy reduction. For every new application, wear and in particular roll surface wear protection has always been the focal point of HPGR trade-off studies. Wear remains an important issue throughout a mine’s life given inevitable variations in the ore deposits properties. Hence, the capability of continuous scanning of rolls provides ample information about any deviations in the design values as well as their effect on the wear pattern. In part I of this manuscript, we present the feasibility of in-line scanning of roll surface in a 200 × 100 mm lab-scale HPGR. First, the in-line scanning was developed in a mock-up roll and then the scanner was moved to the laboratory-scale HPGR. We present the choice of scanners and the methods adopted to achieve high-level accuracy of determining wear. Even though we planned for micron-level precision of scanning, the inherent variability in shaft rotation was higher than the variability in the roll diameter due to wear. The hundred-kilogram mass processed in the HPGR was not sufficient to create enough wear that is discernible to the in-line scanner. Yet, the method tested is a promising avenue for inline scanning of HPGR rolls.

Nickel laterites throughout the world are similar in their gross aspects, but vary significantly in detail. The deposits occur in two separate and distinct geologic settings --those formed over ultramafic rocks which were mechanically emplaced, and those formed over ultramafic rocks that were intruded as melts. The source of the primary nickel in the parent rock may occur both as ionic replacement in silicate lattices and as nickel sulfides. Factors controlling the degree of laterization and nickel enrichment are dependent upon the parent rock characteristics as well as chemical and climatic conditions. Two chemically and physically distinct zones (oxide and saprolite) are commonly present in the laterized rock, but one or the other may be extremely thin or absent. Cobalt and copper may be present in recoverable amounts. Geologic, geophysical and geochemical methods are all utilized in exploring for these deposits. These methods are compared, evaluated and illustrated in the paper. Drilling patterns and ore reserve calculations are also discussed. In contrast to many ore deposits, processing costs are much higher than mining costs. The most efficient processing method is directly dependent upon the chemical composition of the ore. This variation in the chemical and physical characteristics of nickel laterites requires a detailed test program of the metallurgical response to representative samples and blends of ore. Detailed laboratory and bench-scale metallurgical tests are necessary prior to a full scale pilot plant test.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multielement ground support system, there is a need to know the support characteristics that the shotcrete contributes to the overall system. To quantify the support provided by the shotcrete, flexural strength tests were conducted with two common, commercially available fiber-reinforced shotcrete (FRS) mixes using the round determinant panel (RDP) test method, ASTM C 1550. A portable RDP test machine developed by NIOSH researchers was used to determine the peak flexural load and residual load capacity for a steel FRS and a synthetic poly FRS that were sprayed using dry mix procedures and equipment. Besides the flexural strength and loading behavior determined from these tests, a method was also developed for measuring the width of cracks exposed on the underside of a shotcrete panel during a RDP test and relating these measurements to residual load values. Quantifying the peak flexural load and residual loads of a shotcrete mix through on site testing at a mine and visually assessing the loading cycle and load-carrying capability of the shotcrete applied to underground workings will improve mine safety by providing a better assessment of the stability of shotcrete supported entries.

Now in the midst of a full-on cultural shift, they are also key players in the continual effort to re-examine and calibrate practices to meet dynamic and increasingly complex objectives.SME’s technical position statementAs a home for so many technical experts and practitioners, SME has long recognized the importance of a commitment to sustainable development by the mining and minerals industries. In April 2016, the Society formally adopted a technical position on the topic following years of participation in, and support for, related activities. The full position statement appears below. Magnesium is listed as a key critical raw material in a report by the European Commission that evaluated raw materials based on supply risk versus economic importance [1]. It has extraordinary properties, such as nontoxicity, inertness, high melting point, stability, low weight, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, optical transparency, corrosion-resistant behavior and refractory nature. It is widely used in the areas of agriculture; the environment, for antibacterial and water-purification purposes; electronics; automotive; drug delivery; ceramics; construction, as filler in brick; and concrete production, in the forms of magnesium oxychloride and magnesium oxysulfate. Magnesium oxide (MgO) particles can be produced through the calcination of magnesite ore at different calcination conditions depending on the desired quality of the product, classified as fused (2,800 °C), dead-burned (>1,400 °C), hard-burned (1,000–1,400 °C), or light-burned MgO (700–1,000 °C) [2]. However, the global availability of magnesite ore is limited.
