"The traditional approach to rail tunnel fire safety design is to follow NFPA 130, which assumes a major tunnel fire could occur and requires bi-directional emergency ventilation. There is no regard to the impact of ventilation on fire growth and smoke production. In Europe and other parts of the world, the need for tunnel ventilation systems to provide smoke management in the event of fire is being questioned. The European Commission’s Safety in Railway Tunnels TSI is based on a philosophy that improved running capability (preventing fires and other events stopping the train in the tunnel) and elevated fire performance of materials means the chances of a major fire in a tunnel is highly unlikely, with only small fires expected, and no tunnel ventilation required. This approach is reinforced by the International Tunneling Association which has recently published an Engineering Methodology for Performance Based Fire Safety Design on Underground Rail Systems, which includes a methodology that does not require assessment of tenability in tunnels, but requires a scenario based risk assessment to be undertaken to determine overall fire safety measures. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh has shown that forced airflow from a mechanical ventilation system may promote fire growth and increase smoke volumes much more than with natural ventilation. Whilst the concept of no mechanical ventilation (i.e. natural ventilation) is a new concept for some, for many rail tunnels it is worthy of serious further consideration. RAIL TUNNEL SMOKE MANAGEMENT AND STANDARDS Smoke management using mechanical bi-directional ventilation systems has been a central part of the fire safety design solution under NFPA 130 for rail tunnels since 1982. The current version of the standard, NFPA 130: 2014, states that mechanical ventilation should be fitted to rail tunnels of length greater than 305 meters and an engineering analysis should be undertaken for tunnels of length 61 to 305 meters to determine whether mechanical ventilation should be fitted. However, this approach is not necessarily reflected elsewhere in the world. In Europe in particular, mechanical ventilation systems for smoke control within rail tunnels have taken a much less central role within the standards framework."

Coal, which was discovered in Utah in 1849, covers about 18% of the total area. Production in 1981 vas more than 14 million tons. However, some Utah coal mines are quite gassy. If longwall face technology is applied, then a release of a high volume of methane may be expected during the mining process. Investigations on methane content have been made by use of an isothermic bubble desorbometer. The desorbable methane content of 5 m3 to 16 m3 of methane per ton of coal mined has been determined.

The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.

Mineral exploration involves the selective collection, organization, evaluation, and interpretation of geologic and economic data. The sources for such data are original field observations and existing documented information of various types (publications, reports, maps, company files, etc.). As exploration data are accumulated, their storage, organization, indexing, and J retrieval is key to exploration progress. Initial use of computers by mineral exploration groups indicates that data can be meaningfully handled by machines. A computer system makes possible: 1) the storage, manipulation, collation, and selective retrieval of data; 2) the utilization of data banks developed by geologic service groups and available at relatively low cost; and 3) the retrieval of stored data more rapidly, completely, and effectively than by manual systems. Profitable utilization of these capabilities is conditioned by several factors, particularly by the information selected for the system data base and by the design of the computer system itself.

Lidar scanning has become an increasingly popular tool for documenting underground excavations; however, high costs of traditional mechanical electrical lidar hardware, software, and training have limited the frequency at which lidar scans can be performed. Additionally, traditional scanning can be time consuming because multiple scan positions are necessary. With Apple’s incorporation of low-cost mobile solidstate lidar on select smartphones and tablets, lidar is becoming more tractable for everyday construction documentation similar to construction photo collection with smartphones. Here, we describe benefits of mobile solid-state lidar and describe several practical applications for use in underground construction, such as documenting the working face, over-blast, and geologic features of tunnels.

"The wash ore area on the Mesabi iron range covers a regionof the iron bearing formation extending from Grand Rapids on the west to the Hibbing district, about forty miles eastward. Not all of the developed ore bodies are of wash structure; some are of such grades that they can be shipped direct as merchants able ore. It is safe to say, however, that 65 per cent of the ore is of a possible wash structure and of too high a silica content to be classified as merchantable ore. The increase in the number of washing plants completed each year on the western Mesabi shows that ,the product must be of a structure desirable for furnace operation. For several generations now, the high alumina clayey sediments of Southeastern Alabama and Southwestern Georgia have supplied those regions with steady, mineral-based income although the impact of that income has been relatively minor until recently. Since World War II, mining activity has increased algebraically with over half of the total ore value in the Alabama area having been recovered since that time. The Georgia area production increases are even more dramatic. The trends are continuing and the next decade should see ore winning figures which will dwarf all previous production. It's time for the mining engineers to take note of this development as the mining methods, similar to the production, have developed rapidly and now offer challenges for the most competent professional. The development of mining techniques has followed a classic pattern. Beginning almost a hundred years or so ago, with the loading of weather-resistant surface boulders into mule-drawn wagons, mining methods have progressed to discovery of limited surface exposures in outcrop and eventually to stripping and development of non-obvious, subsurface deposits. Little by little, the overburden thickness of new pits has increased until, at present, pits with 100' -125' of overburden are being actively worked. Ground water problems in the Eufaula District are particularly challenging. At A. P. Green's J. W. Baker Pit, #l, in Barbour Co., Alabama, it is necessary to continually pump groundwater at the rate of about 400 gallons per minute from wells on the periphery of this large pit in order to keep the water table low enough to allow mining of the ore body.

The objective of the Cerrejon Coal Project is to mine and export a minimum of 15 million metric tons per year of bituminous coal from the Guajira Pennisula in Colombia, South America. Major components of the project will include an open pit mine, 150 km railroad, marine terminal for storage and shipping, and accommodations for the support personnel. This paper primarily reviews the coal handling facilities at the mine and port which will include crushers, conveyors, silos, stacker/reclaimers, and a shiploader. Of special interest is the design concept for unloading bottom-dump railcars, a programmable controller control system with automatic stacking and reclaiming, a linear-type shiploader, and 2.4m wide conveyors running at 5 m/sec.

The Pima Mining Company lies 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona, and some 45 miles north of the Mexican border. The mill is situated on a hillside overlooking Tucson and the Santa Cruz Valley, the ground generally sloping northeast at a 2.5 percent grade. The hillside location allows for gravity flow generally through the plant as well as for: tailing disposal.

Chromite ore processing tailings and low-grade manganese ores are typically considered waste due to their limited or negligible utility, leading to environmental and storage concerns. Researchers globally have explored various methods to utilize or upgrade these wastes, particularly because dumping chromite ore has been linked to severe health issues through Cr(VI) leaching. Individually, these ores lack economic value, and there has not been research on simultaneously reducing both low-grade ores. In this study, the focus lies on smelting these ores together, aiming to create a precursor alloy for 200 series stainless steel scrap. Initial research indicates the potential for scrap formation, validated through laboratory experiments with varying coke rate, basicity and holding time. The investigation discovered that smelting this combination could yield a metal product consisting of 59 percent Fe, 24.93 percent Cr, 7.56 percent Mn, 0.62 percent Ni and 0.93 percent Si. The optimum basicity was found to be 0.6 with 80 percent recovery. Notably, this process eliminates intermediate steps in 200 series stainless steel production, potentially reducing overall carbon dioxide emissions. This proposed method represents a cleaner, sustainable approach to repurpose these two waste ores, projecting a net profit of US$330/t.

Examination of cored material from the Southern Extension of the Florida Phosphate District has indicated a decidedly complex and diverse sequence of phosphatic sedimentary units. The perfunctory logging techniques formerly used in the Central District are inadequate to properly describe the intricate geology of these sediments. Adequate geologic training and familiarity with the potential ramifications of his judgement are a necessity for the logging geologist. A combination descriptive-graphic logging model is proposed that utilizes a standardized sediment nomenclature system and descriptive symbols for type materials commonly found in these sediments. Justification for adoption of this or a similar logging model is discussed.

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor. The planning of an underground mine for successful extraction of a bedded deposit in sedimentary rocks requires the integrated evaluation of many interdependent problems. The development and coordination of feasible solutions are the responsibility of the mining engineer. One of these problems will be discussed herein; this is the design and .layout of mine workings to secure effective control of the strata above and below the deposit. The objective is the simplest possible repetitive system permitting safe maximum recovery at optimum cost. Mining conditions to be encountered must be predictable. The best mining equipment is ineffective unless strata are controlled. Conversely, a mining layout is only of academic interest, if equipment can not be adapted to work it with adequate provision for ventilation, compliance with mining laws, proper ingress and egress and other practical requirements. Strata control, then, is but one of the mining engineer's problems, and the solutions must be worked out concurrently with solutions to other problems. Dr. Karl F. Fetters in his introductory remarks before the Fourth International Conference on Strata Control and Rock Mechanics at Columbia University said that mining engineering ?has come from the stage of empiricism backed by intuitive reasoning, to where it is based on fundamental scientific and engineering principles?. The standard curriculum in mining engineering now reflects such a change. In common with other branches of engineering education, less and less emphasis is placed on practical skills and more and more on broad scientific education. Science, research and the quest for basic truth are stressed, while descriptive courses and the teaching of specific skills are limited.

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990's. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

Since 1980 a number of significant changes have been introduced at Palabora in an effort to off-set the effects of reduced product price and increased unit cost of inputs. These changes and improvements include major equipment rationalization programs, the introduction of trolley assisted truck haulage, adoption of a sophisticated computerized truck control system, pit design enhancements, improved drilling practices, use of emulsion explosives and the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying system. The various changes, their effect on the operation and their contribution to cost reduction and improved productivity at Palabora are considered.

The recently enacted federal surface mine law (P.L. 95-87) will increase further the complexity of securing a reclamation permit. This law intensifies the need to present the required reclamation plan in a thorough and comprehensive manner. One plan format, that used in construction performance contracts, offers promise of filling this need. Reasons for using the format of expressed, bilateral, negotiated contracts common to the contruction industry, and the salient aspects of an application which uses this format are reviewed. Advantages of this procedure are seen to be improved mine planning, awareness of the total design job, potential for improved speed of permit acceptance and improved cost control.

The construction and erection of the Coleraine concentrating plant was commenced in April, 1909, and was completed (with the machinery installed) ready for use in 1910. Attached to the main building is 'a table house large enough to accommodate con¬centrating tables for five units and space for a small machine shop and supply store. For the handling of the' railroad cars in the upper portion of the mill there is provided on the north side of the main structure a trestle approach 650 feet long, and on the south or opposite side a tail track 300 feet long. The latter is so constructed as to permit its being incorporated directly in a possible future extension of the plant. The building, viaduct approach and tail, trestle, as well as the table house, are con¬structed of steel, the total amount used being 6,100 tons. The building is covered by corrugated' steel sheeting over 2 x 6-inch wood sheathing fastened directly to the structural steel. The north end of the trestle approach is connected with the main road-beds forming the track system for delivery of the crude ore to the plant over an embankment of a maximum height of 110 feet containing over 2,000,000 cubic yards of dirt.

United States Steel Corporation Minntac Mine is located at Mt. Iron, Minnesota, on the Mesabi Iron Range. The taconite pit is two miles long by a mile wide, with a maximum depth of 170 feet. This paper will deal with the radio remote control of locomotives engaged in the railroad haulage of crude ore and waste rock at this property.

Underground construction is a matter of dealing with the inherent uncertainty of subsurface geology. If the encountered conditions are less favorable than the expected ones, the execution of excavation, support, ground treatment or lining works is likely to require more or different efforts than anticipated, thereby delaying the works and increasing the costs. The 2019 first edition of the FIDIC Emerald Book model contract (FEB) addresses many of the issues to which underground works give rise, including those related to differing site conditions (DSC). This paper examines how under the FEB disputes arising from or in connection with DSC could or should be avoided.

Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.
