Injection of alkaline waste-lime slurry was performed at a West Virginia surface coal mine site, to attempt neutralization of acid springs by an alkaline recharge method. Deep trenching (>5 m) using an excavator yielded the most effective injection into the aquifer. Water from two springs, 90 m from the deep trench, showed 70%-80% reduction in acidity in response to injection. Neutralization persisted >170 days after treatment, with pH between 5.1-5.7 and metal acidity from 25-60 mg/L. A minor fraction of lime introduced was consumed. The sustained neutralization is attributed to reaction of acid water with subsurface lime, entrained below the wafer table by macropore infiltration. Characteristics of groundwater transport are critical in determining recharge structure location.

The I-75 Modernization Project (Segment 3) just north of Detroit, MI is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM), which is a Public Private Partnership (P3). The project includes design and reconstruction of 5.5 miles of freeway, including a depressed section with a 20,630-ft long, 14.5-ft inside diameter, up to 100-ft deep stormwater tunnel, multiple drop shafts, and a pump station. The project also includes a maintenance term of 25-years. This is the first time MDOT has used a P3 delivery method for a major highway and tunnel project. This paper describes the development of the P3 documents, including performance-based tunnel and shaft technical requirements, and the approach to project risk management, financing, and insurance coverage.

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. Two Sun Juan Basin studies were completed through the USGS National Coal Availability program. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field (Fruitland Formation) and in the eastern Standing Rock field (Menefee Formation). In the Bisti and Standing Rock areas, the original coal resource5 are estimated at 4.66 and 3.1 7 Gt (5.14 and 3.49 billion st), respectively. The Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Nu- Zin wilderness area, which contains an estimated 1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st) of coal. Technological restrictions remove 32.5% from Standing Rock's original resource. Available resources are 60%. 2.79 Gt (3.07 billion st), of the Bisti original resource and 65%, 2.07 Gt (2.28 billion st), of the original Standing Rock resource.

Corrosion and abrasion properties of a series of chromium-containing, cast-iron balls, with Cr contents ranging from 0% to 29%, were evaluated and compared with austenitic stainless-steel and mild-steel balls. Marked ball wear tests were performed on artificial ore samples consisting of 95% quartzite, with either 5% pyrrhotite or 5% chalcopyrite, under a nitrogen or oxygen atmosphere. The electrochemical mechanism was investigated by correlating the corrosive wear with the corrosion currents obtained from potentiodynantic polarization curves under abrasion. Flotation recoveries were determined on a 95% quartzite + 5% pyrrhotite sample ground with various cast-iron ball materials under an oxygen or nitrogen atmosphere. Electrochemical results are found to be in good agreement with flotation results and with corrosive wear data obtained from marked ball wear tests.

It is undoubtedly true. In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".

The National Steel Pellet Company is owned by National Steel Corporation, managed by the M. A. Hanna Company and located near the town of Keewatin in northern Minnesota. Annually, the concentrator processes 15.24-Mt (15.0 million It) crude taconite with eight 8.2-m diameter by 5.5-m long (27 ft x 18 ft) wet semi-autogenous (SAG) mills to produce 4.57-Mt (4.50 million It) of iron ore pellets. To improve operating costs and primary mill grinding circuit efficiencies, a task force on liners was formed with the operation, maintenance and engineering staff at N.S.P.C. along with the local supplier of mill liners. Results of the task force recommendations since 1980 along with improvements made in the primary circuit operations, are presented. Mill Liner Design and Metallurgy Changes The primary mill liner task force was formed in 1977. Its function was to improve the operating costs and milling efficiencies of the ten 8.2-m x 5.5-m (27 ft x 18 ft) wet SAG mills that were operating at the time. The SAG mills are driven by two 3500 HP motors drawing a total of 5450 kW at 76% of critical speed.

Batch leaching of Ohio #1, Ohio #4A and Ohio #5 coals was conducted with the thermophilic. sulfur, oxidizing microorganism: Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Four different size fractions of each coal, with median sizes of 508, 200, 90, and 49 microns, were subjected for 10 days to leaching in a 5% coal-water slurry at 72°C and a pH of 2. Release rates and extent of sulfate and iron I1 and I11 ions from the coals during the leaching process and distribution of sulfur forms (sulfate, pyritic and organic) in the coal samples before and after treatment were determined. Data indicated that Ohio #1 coal, with an initial sulfur content of 0.6%, showed no significant changes with leaching in total sulfur content or forms of sulfur. The Ohio #4A coal, with initial total sulfur content near 5%, yielded product, for sizes below 200 microns with 90% reduction of pyritic sulfur while the extent of organic sulfur removal varied with coal particle size. Results similar to those for Ohio #4A were observed on the Ohio #5 coal, which had an initial total sulfur content of 3% and a final sulfur content near 1%. The findings were interpreted in terms of basic biological, chemical and physical mechanisms.

Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines are located at Broken Hill in the western part of New South Wales, Australia, 930 km west¬northwest of Sydney. Mining Methods Where pillars must be left between stopes, extraction of a block of ore between two or more levels is carried out in stages: 1) Stopes are mined overhand by horizontal cut¬and-fill stoping, or by long-hole stoping. The various methods of horizontal cut-and-fill stoping used are desig¬nated as: -Loader cut-and-fill stoping with horizontal blast¬holes and diesel load-haul-dump (LHD) units. -Open stoping with horizontal blastholes and com¬pressed air or electric scrapers, or with diesel or electric LHD units. Square-set timber stoping, where ground condition precludes open stoping. The backs are sup¬ported with timber square sets. Pattern rockbolting of the backs may be used as an intermediate stage between open stoping and square-set stoping. 2) Vertical pillars are mined by undercut-and-fill stoping or by vertical crater retreat stoping. 3) Where a horizontal pillar has been formed below the level above the primary stope, this level pillar, usually 6.1 to 8.2 m in depth, may be mined by over¬hand square-set stoping or by undercut-and-fill. Long-hole stoping is used at the Zinc Corp. (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated (NBHC) to mine parts of the zinc-rich A and B lodes. Drilling is carried out from drill drives and, in some cases, sills. Hole sizes used are 165 mm (61/2 in.), 110 mm (4'h in.), and 65 mm (21/2 in.) nominal diam with hole lengths being limited to 50, 30, and 20 m respectively. Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) and water gel explosives are used. Broken ore is loaded from drawpoints at the bottom of the stope using rubber-tired diesel-driven LHD units which deliver ore to an orepass. Annual production at Zinc Corp. and NBHC accord¬ing to mining method is given in Table 1. At Zinc Corp. mining is being carried out at depths varying between 200 and 832 m. At NBHC it ranges from 528 to 915 m below the surface. The average travel time to the stope is 30 to 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS Size, Shape, and Dip There are six separate lodes which carry minable ore in the mines of Zinc Corp. and New Broken Hill Consolidated. The lowest of these and the main ore bodies presently being mined at Zinc Corp. are the lead lodes, consisting of a siliceous fluoritic ore body (No. 3 lens) and overlying it a calcite rhodonitic ore body (No. 2 lens). Each possesses characteristic ratios of lead, silver, and zinc, although the grade within each lens is variable, in places being as high as 30% Pb. There are also low¬grade portions which consist chiefly of poorly mineral¬ized rhodonitic material. No. 3 lens terminates within the Zinc Corp. leases, while No. 2 lens continues into the NBHC leases where it continues to provide a significant proportion of pro¬duction from the mine. Overlying the No. 2 lens are the various zinc-rich ore bodies. In ascending sequence these are lower No. 1 lens, upper No. 1 lens, A lode, and B lode. A typical assay for the small No. 1 lens group ore bodies is 8% lead, 50 g/t silver, and 20% zinc. The `A' lode is a large low-grade ore body in which the higher grade sections assay 4% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 10% zinc; larger quantities of lower grade ma¬terial also occur. B lode, the main zinc lode, typically assays 5% lead, 30 g/t silver, and 17% zinc. B lode increases in size as it extends south, and in NBHC is a major ore body, contributing about 52% of the production. All the lodes pitch south, the average pitch being 0.52 rad (30°) in the Zinc Corp. leases and rather flatter than this in the NBHC leases (see Figs. 1-3). The ground is all competent rock. Production requirements at Zinc Corp. are 900 000 t and 1 200 000 at NBHC.

The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

The key to unlocking value is to find opportunity where others have missed it. How does a company find value in a thoroughly explored asset? This article explores the approach taken by one company and the results it achieved from working this problem. The town of Shafter is located on a small bend in the road in west Texas' Big Bend Country. Its past emulates the glory days of so many other mining camps. A discovery was made, fortunes were built and World War II shut down the operation. The Shafter deposit continues to be one of the larg¬est undeveloped primary silver deposits in North America. Gold Fields Mining Co. recognized the area's potential in 1977 and embarked on studies to reopen and develop the district. Gold Fields spent $16 million on the Shafter project. It drilled more than 86,240 m (282,940 ft) in 475 holes, sunk two shafts and developed 1,550 m (5,100 ft) of underground workings. Today, the mothballed 447-kW (600-hp), single-drum Nordberg hoist and permanent production-type, single-compartment headframe continue to crown the shaft. Other buildings onsite house compressors, mine pumps, spare parts, drill core and other supplies. All these items look as though they arrived yesterday. By 1982, Gold Fields had completed an extensive feasibility study with ambitions to. construct a 1.36-kt/d (1,500-stpd) agitated cyanidation mill and base metal gravity circuit. Reserves at Shafter stand at 4.23 Mt (4.67 million st) grading 193.5 g/t (5.65 oz/st) silver. Gold Fields planned to produce 71.5 t/a (2.3 million oz/year) of silver at a head grade of 196.2 g/t (5.73 oz/st) silver with a 77% recovery rate. Cash costs were projected to be $5.54/oz with an anticipated initial and total capital cost of $46.2 million and $51.3 million (1984 dollars), respectively. The study assumed a silver price of $8.60/oz that has not been seen since the Hunt brothers quit buying silver. When silver prices declined, Gold Fields put the property up for sale.

Batu Hijau is a new copper and gold mine located on the island of Sumbawa in the Republic of Indonesia. This paper details the design and construction of the Batu Hijau overland conveyor, one of the most challenging efforts of the project. The 1.8 m wide, 5.6 km long conveyor has a design capacity of over 10,000 mtph and carries primary crushed ore through the steep mountains of Sumbawa, which necessitated a 160 m vertical downhill section, a 75 m vertical uphill section, ten vertical curves and one horizontal curve.

The physico-chemical interactions among minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine; the most commonly present ions in solution such as Ca and Mg; and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid were investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit in Albania. The results were confirmed in beneficiation tests on two ores, one from the Kukes (Kalimash) deposit and the other from the Rizo deposit in Greece. It was demonstrated that, when Na-oleate is used as collector, chromite, olivine and serpentine can be separated at pH 2.5 and/or pH 5.5 when employing ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA) on previously deslimed material. This approach ensures flotation concentrates with a Cr203 content better than 50% with a recovery of more than 75%.

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-order grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the procedures described in the text by Austin, Klimpel and Luckie, using a slurry density of 70 weight percent. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56 m diameter by 0.91 m length (2 ft. by 3 ft.), 0.82 m by 1.52 m (3 ft. by 5 ft.), 3.36 m by 7.90 m (11.5 ft. by 25 ft.), 4.41 m by 9.10 m (14.5 ft. by 30 ft.), and 5 m by 11.1 m (17 ft. by 36 ft.), assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distribustions and capacities for batch grinding in the 0.56 m and 0.82 m diameter mills and open circuit grinding in the 0.82 m diameter and larger mills using a one-large/two-small reactors in series model fitted to the residence time distribution measured in the 4.41 m diameter mill. The simulated results were compared to plant data for ranges of mill capacities. It was found that the simulated product size distributions were in good agreement with the experimental values below the 70% passing sizes, but did not agree so well in the top sizes. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values for the pilot-scale mills, were about 7 percent too high for the 3.36 m and 4.41 m diameter mills and about 25 percent high for the 5 m diameter mill. Use of the Bond method with the measured Work Index of the phosphate ore gave capacity predictions that were 45 to 150 percent too high.

Freeport Minerals Co.'s Ertsberg East underground operation typifies the cliche that all the "easy" ore deposits have already been found. Despite its location, in a remote Indonesian rain forest, and the effort and expense required to develop the ore body, the mine was developed on schedule, under budget, and with minimal disruption of the adjacent open-pit mining operation. Development of the Ertsberg East copper, gold, and silver ore body took less than two years after exploration drilling and feasibility studies were completed. In addition, the project came in well under its targeted budget of $101.5 million. Initial block caving and underground ore production took place last year. About 3 kt/d of Ertsberg's total 8.6 kt/d ore production is currently mined underground. This will increase to 5.4 kt/d by year's end. Underground operations will eventually account for all of Ertsberg's production, as the open-pit ore body is depleted. Freeport Minerals is currently studying the possibility of increasing total Ertsberg East production tonnage to 10.5 kt/d by 1983. The equipment, work practices, and development methods at Ertsberg East (Gunung Bijih Timur or "GBT"), while typical of other block caving mines, were modified for rapid mine development and maximum ore recovery. Located in the Irian Jaya province, "Gunung Bijih" is the Indonesian expression for the Dutch "Ertsberg" that in English means "ore mountain." "Timur" means "east" and relates to the fact that the new underground ore body lies about 1 km east of the open pit. The area surrounding GBT is mountainous, with peaks from 4.2-5 km. The underground mine adit and surface plant are located at a 3.6-km elevation. The mine, 4° south of the equator, gets 5.1 m/a of rain, but has an average daily temperature of only 13°C because of the mine's elevation.
