An extensive geotechnical monitoring program was used to assess ground and liner behavior, provide input to a Disputes Review Board, and verify design assumptions during construction of the Mt. Baker Ridge Highway Tunnel along I-90 in Seattle, Washington. The stacked-drift tunnel liner was constructed with twenty-four 2.9 m diameter concrete-filled drifts forming a semi-flexible compression ring, followed by excavation of the 19.4 m diameter soil core. Instrumentation data was used for monitoring hillside stability, liner deflections and loads, impacts on adjacent highway tunnels, for back analyzing soil properties, and for helping to limit construction-induced settlements to about 6 cm.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. Seismic exploration techniques offer the engineer and geologist a way of obtaining detailed information on the physical parameters and geometry of the rocks where extensive underground excavation or tunneling is proposed. Use of the seismic method can provide a greater amount of detailed information at relatively less cost than can be obtained by any other known subsurface exploration method. Boreholes are still required for calibration of the seismic data but at a much wider geographic spacing than otherwise would be needed for subsurface mapping. The seismic data can define with precision the actual location of zones of flexure or fracture of the rocks and reveal the configuration of the surface of the rock layers. ENGINEERING PROBLEMS One of the major requirements in the planning of subsurface installations is that of locating tunnels and other underground openings in favorable rock units. Such rock units should exhibit uniformity of composition, both vertically and horizontally, to minimize variation in excavation techniques. The depth and thickness of the unit must be known: a 30-foot diameter tunnel cannot be contained in a 25-foot thick limestone. The rock unit needs to be as free as possible from structural defects and should be suited to efficient excavation procedures. If liquid conduits are planned, the slope of the rock unit needs to be known so that maximum advantage can be taken of gravity flow with the tunnels wholly contained within the unit.

Western Greece is a favorable site for exploration and discovery of oil fields. The most important potential source rocks seem to be all the rocks deposited before middle Jurassic under special circumstances, such as reducing conditions, which allowed preservation and maturation of the organic material. In general all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene are not favorite source rocks. The porosity type was studied on fifty samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potential reservoir rocks are the porous Paleogene wackestones-packstones with boring, channel and vuggy porosity type. Finally seal rocks are the impermeable mud-stones and wackestones of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene age. These rocks consist of micrite and whole sells of foraminiferas and the porosity type is mainly intercrystal/interparticle. A Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis, conducted on seventy samples using a wet oxidation method, has revealed an extremely low TOC content (less than 0.05 %). This amount is by far less than the minimum organic content amount, required for source rock characterization and characterizes all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene age. Additionally, 18O and 13C stable isotope analysis was contacted and the results are given in d values. All the rocks within the studied time interval have much lower d values than petroleum source rocks. Clay mineral content was studied in almost seventy samples. As is indicated by the clay mineral content the studied rocks have reached up to the Middle Diagenesis and the temperature during diagenesis was rather low.

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is a 7.7 kilometer (25,160 foot) long by 3.5 meter (11.5 feet) diameter concrete lined tunnel through the Cambridge formation below Boston Harbor. Constructed as part of the Boston Harbor Project, this tunnel will bring untreated wastewater from the MWRA’s South System headworks facility at Nut Island in Quincy, MA to the new Deer Island treatment plant. A myriad of problems delayed the construction of the tunnel. These problems included salt water inflows of over 22,000 liters (5,812 gallons) per minute, a major fire in the access shaft, weak rock and soil collapsing on the tunnel boring machine, and hand mining operations.

Cleveland's Southwest Interceptor Contracts No. 3 and No. 4 are continuations of Contract No. 1 addressed at the 1987 RETC with geology, equipment, and methods that differ greatly. The two contracts consist of 791 m (4.22 miles) of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) tunnel lined to 2.9 m (9.5 ft), nine access shafts, six drop shafts, and six collection structures. The excavation drive was completed by the use of a 1970 vintage Robbins TBM hybrid for this particular job through the use of both new and old technology. All other excavations were successfully accomplished through drill and blast method in tight residential areas. Concrete lining and connections were completed nine months after holing through.

INTRODUCTION Good ventilation bulkheads (stoppings) can be obtained only by conscientiously adhering to four basic principles: carefully selecting the site for the bulkhead, adequately preparing the site, properly constructing and sealing the bulkhead, and checking the results with a smoke tube before leaving the area. If all these guidelines are followed during each ventilation project, a poor job will result only from the use of improper materials and cannot be blamed on carelessness or oversight. SITE SELECTION A perfectly constructed bulkhead in the wrong location can be completely worthless. Conceivably, a bulk-head in the wrong location could cause dangerous ventilation conditions that are difficult to identify and isolate. If the suggestions herein are followed, a considerable amount of work, time, and material may be saved. Perhaps the single most important step is always to select the exact site for a bulkhead before starting construction. Although the latitude in selecting a site may be limited by instructions or operating conditions, it is common to find poor bulkheads built within a few meters (feet) of a site that would have been far superior but was overlooked during the planning process. The ideal site for a bulkhead should have as many of the following features and conditions as possible: 1) To provide a solid bulkhead, the selected site should be in firm and unbroken ground. 2) To minimize the amount of work and material required and to minimize the danger of later damage to the bulkhead, the site should have as small a cross section as possible. 3) The bulkhead site should not be encumbered by interferences such as pipes, wires, ditches, wire roof supports, trash, muck piles, etc. 4) The walls and timbers of the site should be free from oil, grease, or tar that would inhibit adhesion of the sealant used on the bulkhead. 5) Unless special precautions are taken, the site should not have water seepage, standing water on the floor, or water-carrying ditches. 6) To expedite construction of the bulkhead, the site should have reasonable access to transportation, supplies, communication facilities, and compressed-air lines. 7) The site should have a reasonably level floor, allowing direction of the bulkhead door swing to be reversed at a later time if so desired. In a steeply sloping location, it may be possible to open the door in one direction only. SITE PREPARATION Once a suitable site has been selected for the bulk¬head, it must be prepared properly. All site preparation work should be completed before starting any construction work on the stopping itself. Unfavorable site conditions can be identified during the course of thepreliminary site preparation, saving time, effort, and materials that otherwise might be wasted. The follow¬ing preparation steps help assure the construction of a good stopping: 1) If wire mesh has been used at the site, a strip 457 mm (18 in.) wide should be cut and removed from the walls and roof at the selected location. 2) The exposed strip of rock should be barred down thoroughly to provide a smooth surface. 3) All obstructing materials should be removed, including old timbers, pipes, rockbolts, wires, etc. If a conduit must cross the bulkhead area, it should be located or relocated away from the floor, walls, and roof to allow a 6.28-rad (360°) seal around the juncture between the conduit and the bulkhead structure. 4) All loose muck should be cleaned from the site and a trench about 152 mm (6 in.) deep should be dug from wall to wall in the floor. The trench must be wide enough to accommodate the entire bulkhead, including the posts. 5) The rock surfaces of the walls and roof should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove as much loose surface material as possible. Thorough cleaning promotes adhesion of the bulkhead sealant to the surfaces of the walls and roof, thus promoting an airtight seal. 6) It is quite difficult to seal landing mats that cross a bulkhead. If such a crossing cannot be avoided, the bulkhead should be placed between the end and the first hole in the steel so at least one side of the bulk-head can be sealed easily and completely. That may have to be done prior to actual construction if the end is located on the opposite face from the seal coating of the bulkhead. BULKHEAD CONSTRUCTION The three principal considerations in bulkhead con¬struction are the type of bulkhead, materials to be used, and construction method to be employed. For many projects, the bulkheads are specified by the requesting agency, with no latitude for independent choice of the type, materials, or construction method. In such cases, any deviations from the specifications, for any reason, must be approved in advance by the proper department or by the project senior ventilation engineer. Types and Materials When a choice of type, materials, or method is allowed, consideration should be given to factors such as cost, required useful life, proximity to blasting concus¬sions, availability of materials, direction of permissible air leakage, and degree of airtightness required. Other factors to be considered include the amount of time available, accessibility of transportation, potential for interference with operations or production, ambient water conditions, availability of connections to com¬pressed-air lines, etc. Despite the multitude of factors to be considered, most stoppings can be analyzed easily and the proper choices can be made without much difficulty. The mechanistic approach to comminution consisting of incorporating particulate breakage functions into a suitable population balance equation has been developed by a number of researchers over the past decade or so. (1) To date this approach has been developed and demonstrated primarily for batch-operated, laboratory or small-scale ball mills. However, since industrial mills are mostly quite large and operated in the continuous mode; suitable population balance models and methods for obtaining the necessary breakage and other model parameters must be developed. This paper describes and investigates a radioisotope tracer technique for this purpose, Population balance models previously developed(2,3) are adapted for this study.

With the extension of mining beneath residential and industrial areas, it is becoming increasingly necessary to extract coal and minerals in such a way that subsidence damage due to groundmovement is reduced to a minimum. Understanding clearly of the mechanism of subsidence development is a must in view of the environmental problems and the energy crisis today. This paper gives a simple analysis of various components resulting from subsidence and the influence of other factors on their development. An up-to-date review of the subsidence and strain profiles is presented, with particular references to the coal mining operations. The importance of this topic from mining damage to structures, buildings properties and environment in mining areas is undeniable. Field results are discussed.

Introduction In an earlier publication, the application of exoelectron technology to the monitoring of dry grinding in a ball mill was reported. Recently, the author has investigated the ball mill problem in more detail with the system shown in Fig.1 . Here, some of the current generated in the ore-ball-water mixture was picked up by the metal chains and served as a measure of the rate of grinding. While the mechanism of current generation has not been completely clarified, a parallel study of electrical effects associated with rock drilling indicated that the major driving force is the zeta potential*, while oxidation of the freshly fractured material provides the remainder of the current. Both of these effects are sensitive to the exposed surface area, and it might be expected that the observed currents would provide a measure of the grinding rate. This "surface area" effect allows the measurement system to be used in any type of rock or ore grinding. Some studies with sulfide copper ore indicate higher currents than those observed with silica sand, but the overall pattern of current versus grinding rate is essentially the same. Experimental Studies The experimental system was set up as shown in Fig. 1. The initial studies were done with silica sand because of its availability and for comparison with the data of reference 1. The sand was sized to an average of 425 µm (40 mesh); a typical charge consisted of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of sand, 0.85 L (0.22 gal) of tap water and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of iron grinding balls 25.5 mm (1 in.) in diameter. For a typical "run," the mill was loaded with a fresh charge of ore and operated for periods ranging from 10-60 min. During this time, the current was measured with a Keithley 417 picoammeter and a chart recorder. At the end of the grinding period, the charge was removed and sieved to recover the 425, 300, and 212 pm (40, 50, and 70 mesh) fractions which were then drained and weighed. A fresh charge was used for each test and every attempt was made to keep the draining and weighing processes uniform. *The zeta potential is the voltage developed between the surface of a solid particle and the ion solution in which it is immersed. In the case of rock/ore materials in water, the zeta potential is negative.

As of the end of October, 1990, there have been eight spontaneous combustion heatings reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at the No. 5 Mine. A reportable heating is defined as one with elevated surface temperatures of the strata greater than ll°C (20°F) above the ambient. The first heatings occurred in November, 1986. The last three heatings were located near the start line of "K" Longwall Panel in the southwest where mining had begun on May 21, 1990. All of the heated areas had been at the time of detection, or were sometime areas of high ventilation pressure differentials or high air velocities. All of the heated areas are in an expanded seam with associated, extensive floor heave which is characteristic of all of the expanded seam thus far exposed by development mining in the No. 5 Mine. Jim Walter Resources, Inc. submitted a plan to MSHA which would reduce the potential for spontaneous combustion at the No. 5 Mine by reducing high air velocities and high pressure differentials in the gob. These two parameters are the dynamics which feed oxygen to the pyrite, thus initiating the oxidation process which can lead to spontaneous combustion. No. 5 Nine operated under this plan for 29 shifts before mining on the longwall was stopped by MSHA and the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan revoked. This paper briefly details the geology of the expanded seam and history of the heatings. It also gives a retrospective view of the operation under the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan and reasons why it was revoked by MSHA. Currently, knowledge of the reaction process of the footwall coal seams at No. 5 Mine and other potential spontaneous combustion seams in the United States is limited. There are techniques used in the United States and other countries to minimize the potential for heatings in spontaneous combustion prone areas. The No. 5 Mine has attempted to utilize this current technology. However, in deep, gassy mines the problem is complex.

This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

Vancouver-based War Eagle Mining Co. is an advanced-stage Canadian junior mining company that is focused on becoming one of the world?s leading germanium producers. War Eagle?s primary focus is on the Tres Marias high-grade germanium mine near Chihuahua, Mexico. The Tres Marias Mine has high-grade zinc mineralization as well. War Eagle acquired the 28-km2 (17.4-sq mile) property in 2001 from Tombstone Exploration and is currently working to put the mine into production. Current exploration is focused on supporting a resource report and prefeasibility study that is expected to be completed in early 2008. War Eagle expects to have completed an estimated 80 underground diamond drill holes, 40 surface diamond drillholes, 31 percussion holes and 1,296 1.5-m (5-ft) channel samples. Eighty-seven additional exploration targets have been identified within the mining concession. Recent drill results have significantly expanded the known mineralized body at the Tres Marias Mine. The exploration and development program is expected to be completed during 2008. War Eagle owns both the drills currently in operation at Tres Marias. An advanced exploration and development program has confirmed historical grades and is producing encouraging new results from diamond and percussion drilling, channel sampling and high-resolution resistivity geophysics. Glenn R. O?Gorman, an independent geologist and consultant to War Eagle, conducted a study on the reporter. He stated that the Tres Marias concession area has the potential to host 5 to 10 Mt (5.5 to 11 million st) of minable ore.

A portion of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Red Line Extension through Somerville, Massachusetts consists of 1,553cm (5,092 LF) of hard rock tunneling 6.7m (22 ft.) diameter horeshoe, 148m (485 LF) of mixed face tunneling, 7.2m (23 ft.) diameter circular, beneath an active railroad in a heavily commercialized business district. This paper will deal with the excavation of the mixed face area without the use of a shield. It will address the special excavation and support problems encountered during tunneling operations using the floating crown bar and modified spiling methods. Topics covered will include excavation and support methods, cement grouting, compaction grouting, and instrumentation. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Davis Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts Somerville/ Cambridge, Massachusetts is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) 5.1km (17,000 ft.) Red Line Extension. This extension runs from Harvard Square, Cambridge, to Alewife Brook Parkway, Cambridge through Somerville. This portion (MBTA Contract #091-106) required the excavation and concreting of 1,701m (5,580 LF) of single track twin tunnels consisting of 1,553m (5,092 LF) of conventional hard rock tunneling under 56 residential properties and 148m (485 LF) of mixed face tunneling beneath an active railroad in a heavily commercialized business district. The mined diameter of the mixed face tunnel is 7.16m (23.5 ft.) Access to the tunnel was via the Summer Street vent shaft, and the two Grove Street access shafts where all tunnel excavated materials were removed.

National Steel Pellet Co. operates eight 8.2-m diameter by 5.5-m long (87- x 18-ft) SAG mills to grind 15.24 Mt (15 million It) of taconite ore per year. Improvements to increase mill throughput, lower steel consumption, lower power consumption, and increase grinding efficiency will be discussed.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated longwall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every l.5 m [5 ft] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 dBA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.
