The Lower Olentangy Tunnel project includes 47,000 cubic yards of planned ground improvement for earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) tunneling (5.2 km) and microtunneling (335 m) in glacial soils. Jet grouting started in late 2021 and will continue through 2023 to complete operations at 5 shafts, 14 safe havens, 5 watermain ground improvement zones, and a river crossing. Typical jet grout columns are installed at depths between 15–24 meters. Discrete soil-cement blocks range from 267–8,900 cubic yards in volume. This paper discusses the methodology, testing, and technical considerations associated with jet grouting operations in glacial overburden across an urban environment.

Efficient flotation of fine phosphate minerals from a deslimed waste phosphate stream (-74 microns) has been achieved by both bench-scale flotation and by flotation with a 2-inch air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) unit. A sample was collected from the waste phosphate slime stream at the SF Phosphate Limited Operations near Vernal, Utah, for flotation experiments at University of Utah laboratories. The collector used was a mixture of fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate and kerosene. Bench-scale flotation test results show that the minus 15-micron particles have a significant adverse effect on phosphate flotation. When the minus 15-micron material was removed by a classifying hydrocyclone, improved flotation recovery and concentrate grade were realized. A bench-scale flotation recovery of 86 % with a concentrate grade of 16% P2O5 was obtained from classified waste slime (74 x 15 microns) feed material containing 11.3% P2O5 In contrast, a 90% P2O5 recovery was achieved with a concentrate grade of 16-18% P2O5 by single-stage ASH flotation. With a second stage of ASH flotation, a concentrate containing 23% P2O5 was realized at an overall recovery of 75%. These results indicate that the industrial application of ASH flotation technology for phosphate recovery from waste slimes is promising.

The consistent occurrence of organic carbon early in the paragenesis of Mississippi Valley-type sulfide deposits suggests a genetic link between organic carbon and the sulfide ores. Reduction of sulfate in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is commonly proposed as the precipitation mechanism for these deposits, but inorganic sulfate reduction is too slow to be important to the chemistry of the ore zone, and bacteria, which catalyze sulfate reduction at low temperatures, are not known to survive at the temperatures of mineralization. Sulfate reduction with or without bacteria is not consistent with the sulfur Isotope evidence. Sulfur isotope studies also indicate that the derivation of sulfur from hydrocarbon at the sites of mineralization is unlikely. Organometallic complexing may be involved in the transport of metals, but no plausible mechanism for breaking these complexes at the sites of mineralization has been proposed. Reduction of partly oxidized sulfur species in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is a possibility which deserves further scrutiny.

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining decided to close an open-pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota using a passive-treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. More than 50 Aft (55 million st) of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages. Before the closure, the annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but they are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH levels range from 5 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH levels greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential that a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to more than 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992. They have removed 60% to 90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1 % of those for an active treatment plant. Because mine-drainage problems can continue for more than 100 years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland-treatment systems within seven years.

The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45' to 50' toward the northwest. Mining on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administered lands is affected by Federal laws and regulations requiring the mining industry to plan for the environmental consequences of surface disturbance. Regardless of the requirements for obtaining a claim, permit, lease or contract to mine, a notice or a mining and reclamation plan will be submitted and an acceptable environmental document must be prepared prior to mining. A bond may be required based on the results of the environmental evaluation, public interest and the operator's past history of compliance. In several areas, Federal requirements are different from California's requirements under their Surface Mine and Reclamation Act (SMARA). Therefore, the BLM is negotiating with the State in order to work out problem areas of responsibility and duplication of effort.

With the growing demand for energy, explora¬tion for uranium deposits has dramatically increased in the past few years. Since the early ages of uranium exploration, natural gamma ray logs has proved fast and convenient in locating and evaluating mineralized bodies. However, natural gamma ray logging is an indirect measure of the uranium content and in some circonstances, the radiometric signal can be 'altered in a very significant way. To check the presence of any distortion, statistical comparision of radiometric counts and chemical assay values for the same samples is generally performed. Of course in such studies, one inevitably mixes samples where the radiometric signal is really proportional to the uranium content and samples where this signal is influenced by many other sources or distorted before being recorded. Nevertheless, the average tendency leads to correction factors which are then applied to every radiometric reading in the deposit or portion of the deposit where the statistical comparison is made. To account for the "average" character of these correction factors, a parameter of uncertainty like a standard deviation of possible errors is associated to each corrected value. This parameter can be latter used in an ore reserve estimation when the weights assigned to samples should depend on the precision of their grade. The purpose of this paper is to present a new regression technique which can be used without any restrictive hypothesis like a normal or lognormal distribution. Different standard ways which can be used to statistically compare radiometric and chemical assay values for the same sample and to derive a correction factor for the latter will first be reviewed, after a general discussion of disequilibrium problems. The discussion and the examples will be restricted to the case of natural gamma ray logging in drill holes but the methods presented in this paper can also be applied to data from the radiometric probing of a working face or a truck load in an operating mine.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

British Columbia is geologically favourable for a rich variety of industrial mineral occurrences. Some have been produced for years, others overlooked until recently. Major production occurs for asbestos, gypsum, limestone, magnesite, silica and sulfur; lesser production for a dozen others. For several of the minerals, potential is much greater than existing production. New production opportunities exist also for diamonds, niobium and REE minerals, fluorspar, kyanite, nepheline syenite, talc, and several others. Alberta, though geologically less diverse, also has many industrial minerals. Limestone, salt and sulfur have the major production; clay and shale, silica, sodium sulfate and a few others lesser production. Opportunities exist for expanded production, and for new production in heavy (Ti -Zr) minerals, formation brines (Ca-Mg-I-Li), and gypsum.

In an exchange of views with the Program Chairman for the Technical Session on Industrial Minerals and Investment in Foreign Countries, it was agreed that it would be more interesting to approach the problem of mineral investment in foreign countries in a more general framework and not confine it to industrial minerals. Therefore, this Bureau of Mines report is proposed to examine current attitudes toward investments in foreign mineral resources and restraints that they impose on investments necessary to assure supply for future global mineral needs.

Central Water Integration Project (CWIP) Segment 5-1 is the most critical segment of a regional water supply project that transfers groundwater from Burleson County to northern San Antonio, replacing over 20% of that City’s water supply with a new source. CWIP Segment 5-1 included three tunnel reaches totaling 10,350-ft and 5 shafts that were constructed inside the City in an area known to contain large karst features. This paper describes site work used to investigate the alignment for karst features, manage potential environmental impacts, develop the contract package required for mitigation and the means and methods used to mitigate the large karst features that were encountered.

A proactive design and construct approach was used to remediate the Warm Springs Ponds Complex near Anaconda, Montana under "Superfund". The pond complex is used for treatment/settlement of heavy metals and is a repository for 19,000,000 cubic yards of tailings, precipitates and associated sediments. Remediation has resulted in treatment/settling capacity for flows up to the 100-year flood (3,300 cfs); expansion from 5 to 11 ponds in series requiring 12.5 miles of new or improved embankments with associated hydraulic structures; flood protection for the 0.5 Probable Maximum -Flood (PMF) (70,000 cfs); and closure of exposed tailings along with aquatic and terrestrial habitat enhancement.

The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

Traditional aggregate sources, that is the riverbeds, the alluvial fans, located relatively close to the developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As the sand and gravel reserves are depleted, those production plants are unable to secure additional adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. We promote development, we promote the paving of streets, the building of houses, and industrial and commercial centers, and because of economics, we tend to favor those developments located close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors who soon become our detractors. In general, urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. The neighbors don't like the view of the pits or the quarries, they complain about the "dust", about noise, about trucking . . . in general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source.

INTRODUCTION The Alimak method of raising (Fig. 1) was intro¬duced in 1957. Because of its flexibility, economy, and speed, it soon became the most used system of raising in the world. With the same unit, raises of various areas, inclinations, and lengths can be driven. Air-motor¬-driven raise climbers normally are used in mines with short raises (Fig. 2). For longer raises electric or diesel-¬hydraulic drives are used. The Alimak raise climber is designed entirely in ac¬cordance with the instructions of the Swedish Board of Industrial Safety (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen). There are good margins of safety concerning the breaking strength of the material and the raise climber comprises safety devices and features that practically eliminate the risks of accidents. The drive gear of air-driven climbers is equipped with an air-operated brake which is automatically activated when air for the motors is shut off. There is a safety device which activates automatically at overspeed and a speed-regulated brake for descent by gravity, by which the raise climber can be taken down to the bottom of the raise in case of cutoff of the air supply. The raise climber climbs along a pin rack welded to a guide rail which also comprises pipes for air and water. The guide. rail can be extended by using 1- or 2-m (3.2¬or 6.4-ft) sections as the driving progresses. Each guide rail section is bolted to the rock wall by special expan¬sion bolts of Alimak design. Men ride up to the face in the cage, traveling com¬fortably and easily while material is transported on the platform. There is no dangerous climbing up ladders. The men are well protected during ascent and arrive in good condition at the face. The greatest advantages of raise climber systems are flexibility and versatility. The US Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67% copper and with a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5% P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88% of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9% copper at a rate seven times, faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate four times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80% of the phosphate in a 16.9% P2O5 concentrate.

Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority Section E8a consists principally of twin tunnels 1,713 meters (5,620 ft) long, excavated to a diameter of 6.35 meters (20.83 ft) using an open face shield, with a primary lining of four unbolted precast concrete segments expanded at the crown, and a full circle unreinforced concrete final lining with a finished tunnel diameter of 5.08 meters (16.67 ft). The tunnels, constructed in Cretaceous age sediments, are mostly in stiff to hard clay except for a few areas along the alignment that contain dense to very dense fine sand in the upper portion of the tunnel that created a mixed face condition. At two locations unexpected heavy water inflows produced very serious problems in both tunnels. Water flows in the interface area were generally more than 378.5 1pm (100 gpm) and reached as high as 2,649.5 1pm (700 gpm) in the mixed face ground. The nature of the tunnel inflows, the consequences, and the corrective measures adopted will be the subject of this paper.

Social attention to environmental aspects, steadily increasing in European Countries, has been leading to a stricter regulation of many productive activities. Among them, mining and quarrying sectors have been often censured for their potential and real impacts on land and environment. Referring to dimension stone exploitation (also the terms ornamental stone or natural stone are here used as synonymous), quarries are often concentrated in extractive basins, where the resource is localized with suitable quality and quantity: this fact has sometimes raised critical environmental situations. Nevertheless, dimension stone quarrying represents in Europe a traditional and important economical activity, source of wealth and employment. Moreover, many natural stones take on a ?cultural? value and may be considered as ?classic?, as they have been exploited since antiquity and are element of the architectural heritage of many Countries. The sector relevance demands the research of a sustainable balance between social-economical needs and environmental protection. Actually, very restrictive environmental protection policies have led to severe limitations to quarrying activity, but the results do not seem to be completely positive in terms of sustainability: on the one hand, closing-down stone quarrying activities imposes a shrinkage in local, social and economical development; on the other, quarrying activity is pushed towards developing Countries, environmentally un-protected, simply moving and putting off to next future the problem. The challenge of the sustainable development of quarrying sector ? recently explored in the European Commission?s communication ?Promoting sustainable development in the EU non energy extractive industry? (COM-2000-265) ? should be achieved through a positive link between theoretical statements and practical effects: sustainability indicators may be an effective instrument to assess and monitor the environmental performance of the industry. The paper refers to the development of specific ecological criteria and indicators, which can be useful to measure and predict the eco-efficiency of a dimension stone quarry, finally pointing out where improvement efforts have to be focused.

Elastomeric liner products have been used for over two decades in a wide variety of uses including pond liners, hazardous waste barriers, dam face rehabilitation and mining applications. Asphalt blended with polymers is enjoying renewed interest in the engineering community because of its durability, high yield attributes, fewer CQA steps due to seamless installation, and ease of installation and repair. As in other lining technologies, advancements in polymer chemistry and improvements in installation techniques have had dramatic impact on the quality of fluid-applied asphalt (FAA) membranes. Membrane 6, man­ufactured by Deery Oil, Inc. for over 16 years is a hot-applied polymer modified asphalt membrane that can be applied to a variety of substrates in a reinforced configuration or installed directly on an asphalt surface. By blending thermoplastic polymers with asphalt, very favorable stress/strain characteristics can be achieved (Chambers, 1980). Typically the membrane will yield under rel­atively low stress and also exhibit high elongation capability. In service applications where puncture resistance is a concern, fluid applied asphalt materials have the flexibility and com­pressive strength under heavy loading that leach pad designers may find attractive. Additional security is achieved if long term service life is important as in the case of radioactive waste con­tainment. The Department of Energy selected Membrane 6 over seamed liners for a surface barrier that must isolate and contain radioactive waste for 1000 years. Asphalt has a long history of use as a water-stop material and it is believed that this natural construction material combined with SBS polymers will per-form for a millennium. (Freeman, 1994) The process of installing Membrane 6 varies according to job size and the type of surface to be protected. Lining applica­tions on compacted substrates require the membrane to be applied to a scrim cloth (fig 1). Some early pioneers in FAA technology neglected this step and therefore never achieved per­formance levels that satisfied regulatory guidelines. The scrim provides a cohesive surface that promotes membrane flow while achieving high impermeability (2Xl0 '11).

The N20 to N25 Tunnel (basic) segment was the second tunnel contract awarded for construction by The PB/MK Team. This project embodied 3.9 km (2.4 miles) of tunnel and was located within the northwest quadrant of the 86.9 km (54 mile) long main collider ring. The contract required the excavation and initial support of a 54.3 m (178 vlf) deep ventilation shaft, a connecting horseshoe shaped Adit and TBM starter tunnel and 3,865 m (12,680 If) long main collider tunnel with a 4.3 m (14 ft) minimum finished diameter. This paper discusses the construction methods, equipment utilized and the production achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft, connecting adits and the main collider tunnel.
