The area from Ohio on the east, Tennessee on the south, and Minnesota on the west: contains some very unique and useful clay deposits. Included are fireclays and plastic clays in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri; flint clays in Kentucky and Missouri; ball clays in Kentuckv and Tennessee; adsorbent clays (fuller's earth) in Missouri, southern Illinois, and Tennessee; and alluvial clays and shales for structural clay products from every state. Unique kaolin clays are known in Minnesota, Missouri, and southern Illinois and halloy-site localities are known in southern Indiana. The geology, physical properties, and uses or potential uses of these midwestern clays are described.

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

This study attempts to compare the costs of transporting coarse coal by pipeline, versus the more conventional use of belt conveyors. Hydraulic conveying of crushed (not pulverized) coal has not had widespread commercial acceptance. However, there is little doubt that the technology is available, so that, should this method be proven economical for a given application, implementation of this technology will become more acceptable. Hydraulic transport by pipeline between the mine stockpile and the coal preparation plant, for distances normally considered practical for an overland belt conveyor, should be an ideal application. In this application there is no need for dewatering facilities at the receiving end of the pipeline, because, the receiving screens at the plant serve this purpose. Further, clarified water from the preparation plant can be recirculated back to the mine, a plus for water resource and environmental considerations.

Utah International's Shirley Basin Mine is located in the Southeastern High Plains of Wyoming at an elevation of about 7,100 feet. The Shirley Basin area is a gently rolling semi-arid land. The uranium ore zone occurs at depths ranging from 270 to 350 feet below the surface. Overburden consists of poorly consolidated sandstones, siltstones, and clays. Underground mining was begun in 1960. Conditions were made difficult by high rates of water inflow and ground support problems. The development of a solution mining I or in-situ leaching technique allowed underground operation to be abandoned in 1964. Solution mining provided limited production from 1963 to July 1970. In January, 1969, large scale development of open-pit mining was begun. A 1,200 ton per day mill went "on stream" in March, 1971.

One definition of filtration states that it is utilized to affect a more complete separation of liquid and solid phases than is possible with settling alone. The development of Diatomaceous Earth filter aids has added a new dimension to filtration technology in the mining industry. It makes possible the filtration of slimes with almost perfect clarity, and at rates that become economical.

Computer based dispatching in open pit truck haulage operations yields many benefits of current interest to mine management. The key tangible benefit is a substantial productivity increase with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, a significant reduction in equipment required to meet production quotas. Other tangible benefits, depending on the operation, include minimizing rehandle, meeting several blending constraints simultaneously and ensuring a target plant feed rate. Intangible benefits include production forecasting, performance comparisons of trucks or shovels of different manufacture and extensive on-line report generation. Recent advances in mini and micro computer hardware and software and solid state electronics permit design and implementation of system features not feasible even a few years ago. Here we discuss many of these recent developments with emphasis on system aspects and dispatching algorithms.

An MPSI KW-20 Tower mill has been tested at the Butte Molybdenum plant of Anaconda Minerals Company, as a substitute for the conventional 1.5x3.0 m (5x10 ft) tumbling ball mill currently used for regrind purposes. The Tower mill was operated in both open and closed continuous circuits. These results were complemented with a series of batch grinding tests to determine some of the operational features of this mill. The relative grinding efficiency of the Tower mill with respect to the tumbling ball mill was determined and the applicability of this new mill to a plant/heavy duty environment was assessed. Experimental results obtained on the regrind of moly concentrates indicate that approximately 40% energy savings can be realized by using the Tower mill instead of the ball mill.

This is done with extemive research of numerom case histories in Illinois collected by the authors. The howe response to substience-itiuced ground displacements are summarized and evaluuted. A damage level criteriu, specifically developed for residenttil structures, is presented based primarily on repair costs. Damage levels and the associated subsidence profile characteristics for each case history are compared.

When an open pit mine is deepened, more and more waste rock must normally be removed. Techniques for optimization of open pit design are well-established within the mining industry. The recommended method is to choose the open pit alternative with the highest net present capital value of open pit and future underground mining. When the open pit is mined out, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, mining must start underground. When planning an underground operation we experience the same type of optimization problem that occurs when determining the optimal depth for open pit mining. When mining underground the ore body is often divided into a number of areas, blocks or slices, each containing a transportation system with trains, trucks, conveyors, etc. When all the ore within such a part of the deposit is extracted, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, a new transportation must be developed. The question that now arises is: how large a pan of a deposit shall be included in the first development and how much shall be left for future consideration?

This paper identifies and formulates the probabilistic nature of underground coal face operations using the Semi-Markovian theory. Through this theory the probability of coal flow from a face is obtained for any given time t of a shift. These probabilities are used for determining the capacity and operating policy of a surge tank located at the shaft bottom.

The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

This article presents a customized genetic algorithms (GA) with new crossover and mutation operators to solve the short-term production scheduling problem of multi-mine mineral value chains (MVC). The preceding problem consists of determining the extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively while closely meeting the quality and quantity requirements of the processing units subject to relevant technical and operational constraints. The short-term production scheduling is carried out at shorter scales wherein the operations are modeled in a great detail with large number of constraints. This makes the industry-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. Thus, a GA-based heuristic approach is developed to obtain nearoptimal solutions to the large-scale instances of the problem in a reasonable amount of computational time. Computational experiments show that the developed GA-based method is a promising way to handle industry-scale instances of the problem. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis on various parameter combinations of crossover and mutation operators indicates that the customized global mutation operator, when used in combination with the customized crossover operators, took on average 12.5% less time than the customized local mutation operator to converge to a solution.

Considerable potential for metallic mineral resources in the lower Proterozoic rock of the Lake Superior region exists (Mudrey and Kalliokoski, in press). Most of the identified resources occur within a 2.0- to 1.9-b.y.-old lithotectonic assemblage characterized by extensive sedimentary strata in the north and thick volcanic se- quences in the south, all deposited on a two-terrane, composite basement of Archean age (DeMattis, 1989). Since the late 1960s, measured resources of nearly 90 Mt (100 million st) of typical volcanogenic massive sulfide at eight localities in Wisconsin have been discovered. The largest of these, near Crandon, contains about 61 Mt (67 million st) of ore averaging 5.6% zinc, 1.1 % copper, and 0.5% lead. Although none of these properties are in production, estimates by Mudrey (1978) suggest that Wisconsin could become a major contributor of newly mined zinc and copper in the United States. These discoveries and uranium and gold discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian are what have led to in- creased metallic mineral exploration throughout the northern half of Wisconsin (Fig. 1). In this chapter, we discuss the geology and legal framework in which the Proterozoic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits were found. Exploration activities for other metals have generally been negative, and have been background noise for the legislative activities related to the massive sulfide discoveries. Uranium exploration has been consistently negative, although several different environments have been assessed. Other metal discoveries. such as titanium/vanadium, have been subeconomic.

Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrosion rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in commercial mills represents less than 10% of the total loss expressed as micrometers/hour of exposure in recent USBM tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills which indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and for cast irons, M7C3 carbides produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

The effect of particle size on coal dewatering has been well recognized However, there are no systematic studies on ultrafine coal dewatering. The results discussed last year revealed the effect of flocculant type and coal wettability on the filtration of ultrafine coal In this paper, the differences in dewatering between -25 µ m ultrafine and -500 µ m fine coal with addition of flocculants, surfactants and oil-emulsions in vacuum filtration are further investigated Significant differences were observed in the reduction of the cake moisture. The utilized emulsions were found to be very powerful and promising filtration aids for both ultrafine and fine fractions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic coal

An orebody is a mining company's greatest asset; without it there can be no mine. Yet, by the very nature of the industry, orebodies are wasting assets whose progressive depletion must be balanced by continued discovery of new ore to enable both the industry to survive and the raw material demands of society to be satisfied. Although mineral exploration may be viewed as any activity which leads to the creation of investment opportunities in the mineral industry, ultimately new ore can only be generated through discovery. The process leading to discovery may involve a long chain of independent and interdependent events. It will almost always be repetitious and require the examination of many prospects or trials before the goal, a commercially successful discovery, is satisfied. Long term survival of a mining company through regular discovery of new ore, requires a continued commitment of funds and effort to mineral exploration.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. The MBS Solvent Extraction System utilises a unique design of mixer- settler having very high capacity per unit area and great flexibility. The development of the mixer-settler is traced through its various stages wherein the independence of mixing and pumping, reduction in settler area requirements and simplicity of plant layout were achieved. The laboratory, pilot plant and full scale tests contributing to the development of the machine are described. The existing KREBS SX plants in Europe and Africa are described as well as the plants presently under design. Results of recent testwork are also given.

During 1980-2000, the Florida Phosphate industry will deplete its Central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the ?so-called? Southern Florida Reserve areas. These new mines will require new mining, beneficiation and tailings disposal technologies in that the southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the Central Florida deposits furthermore, government regulations will necessitate the development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.

Incorporation of a 2,727 mtpd, $5.7 million flotation circuit into the Mclaughlin flowsheet was completed in November 1991. This capital addition reduced overall operating costs and improved the gold recovery of the low grade refractory reserves over that expected for direct cyanidation. In addition, flotation provided a means to generate a sulfide concentrate which is utilized to supplement feed to the pressure oxidation circuit.
