The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. The theoretical requirements for the flotation d large particles are discussed. A flotation machine is described which has components which meet many of the theoretical requirements for the flotation of large particles. The machine's salient features include multiple fine-bubble attachment, froth level feeding, quiescence, shallow depth, and short flotation time. Test conditions and results are presented for the laboratory flotation of 10 mesh phosphate, 4 mesh potash, and 1/2 inch coal. In addition, test conditions and results of pilot plant flotation of minus 14 plus 35 mesh phosphate and minus 14 plus 150 mesh phosphate are also presented.

This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

Current over-capacity in coal production provides assured and relatively low-cost supplies to coal importers. At the same time, it is of serious concern to coal producers who invested considerable sums in the expectation that overseas demand would continue to grow rapidly. This paper assesses the reserves available for export, the export facilities, the coal supplies which can be put through them, and the market prospects for the future. It assumes, rightly or wrongly, that there will be no major and prolonged disruptions in supply from any major sources of coal. COAL RESERVES FOR EXPORT Economically recoverable reserves in the non-communist world amount to about 470 billion tonnes. These are sufficient to sustain current production levels of 2 billion tonnes a year for 235 years.

Much concern has been expressed recently as to whether water supplies will be sufficient to support accelerated energy development foreseen in operation Independence. Taking the Nation as a whole, sufficient water is available for energy growth, but locally, as in arid parts of the Colorado Basin, limited water supplies will dictate economies in water use and affect plant siting. As Young and Thompson1 point out with respect to electric power generation, the term "water requirements" is misleading, as demand for water for cooling is sensitive to price of water and thus is quite flexible rather than the inflexible or fixed level implied by the word "requirement." Much the same is true of other energy conversion systems. Water is used in many aspects of energy production including mining and reclamation of mined lands, on-site processing, transportation, refining, and conversion to other forms of energy. In the East, South, Midwest, and along the seacoasts, water supplies are generally adequate for energy industries; most water problems in those regions relate to pollution rather than supply. West of about the 100th meridian, however, runoff is generally less than potential diversions and energy industries must compete with alternative uses for the limited available water supplies. Water is especially short in areas of less than 10 inches mean annual rainfall where natural precipitation generally is insufficient for establishing vegetation without irrigation. Extraction. The principal categories of extraction comprise coal mining, oil and gas production, uranium mining, and oil shale mining.

Electrostatic separation is one of the most misunderstood physical processes used to beneficiate minerals. Nonetheless, millions of tons of titanium ores, iron ores and other minerals are processed every year economically, efficiently and safely. Over the past ten years major advances in electrostatic separation and its application have occurred. New processes include dewatering clay slurries, separating halite and sylvite, and shape separation of vermiculite and gangue minerals. Electrostatic separation techniques are based on one of two methods, electrophoresis or dieleccrophoresis -- processes involving charged and uncharged particles respectively. In some cases, the combination of these two techniques has proven quite useful. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic understanding of the physical processes collectively called "electro- static separation" in order to enhance one's ability to define and consider new possibilities in mineral processing and other fields.

The growth of computer and ground control technology in recent years, combined with an urgent demand for low-cost fossil fuels and mineral resources, has set the stage for full-scale utilization of computers in mine planning. Steeply rising production costs and the need to preserve the environment are placing great demands on engineers to improve their mining efficiencies, which can best be accomplished by applying the full capabilities of the computer. Pressure to develop and perfect programs with an immediate potential for improving mine de- sign, reducing mining costs and extending the viable coal reserves of the country has already come to bear in the form of exploding energy requirements, environ- mental considerations and the visible limitations of other energy sources. The computer program discussed in this paper, RAMPLAN (Rock Mechanics Applied to Nine Planning), was constructed as part of a continuing effort at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research to develop a suite of programs to benefit the mining engineer in improving mine design and evaluation techniques. This program averages out structural data values obtained from randomly placed or gridded point sources across a mining property and uses these values in structural design equations. The basic purpose of the program is to provide accurate estimates of mineable tonnages, based on a realistic assessment of structural conditions existing in the deposit, for use in subsequent evaluation programs. Program output, however, also provides sound engineering data for the mine planner to use in planning and laying out new properties. Mining dimensions produced by the program provide a good starting point for initial layouts; and as more refined procedures are developed for increasing and improving the quality and quantity of information from boreholes, this information may be used with increasing confidence. The rock mechanics principles utilized in the program are generally well-established with full details provided to the user. To produce meaningful results extensive input data, obtained from exploration borehole core data, outcrop sampling points, or mine samples, are required. To assist the engineer, details of the types of tests that should be conducted have been listed. By including all of the ground control equations in the program the otherwise long and tedious calculations can be performed easily and quickly, and the work can provide the basis for a more detailed ground control study. The program is written in Fortran IV Level G to run on an IBM 3701155 ASP and requires 156K storage.

During the past ten years, the US coal industry has experimented with various ways to extract methane from coal seams. Drilling long horizontal boreholes in solid coal from mine workings and vertical gob degas boreholes are becoming standard techniques for methane recovery from coal seams. Prime motivations for such work have always been safety and productivity in mines, but the commercial value of gas so produced is encouraging utilization. The paper reviews various ways to produce methane from coal seams and discusses some utilization projects extant in the industry.

The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, concentration, hypochlorite consumption, and bed height on the total gold extraction. At high pH, the hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption is decreased. At room temperature, the total gold extraction is proportional to the hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10 and 80 percent are obtained for 12 and 167 lbs/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption gold extraction was increased by shortening the ore column height. Finally, calcium hypochlorite is more effective than sodium hypochlorite.

Mining has been the mainstay of the Woods Creek Valley for more than a century. The head of the valley is at the Continental Divide, about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. First, it was the quest for gold and silver that drew people to the valley. Then, when molybdenum was classified as a strategic metal by the U. S. Government during World War I, it was the valley's molybdenum mineralization which attracted the most attention. Molybdenum is used primarily as an alloying material in superior grades of steel. Circumstances responsible for providing the label "Urad" are unknown, but Urad is variously reported to be an acronym for "Uranium Research and Development" or "Uranium Research of America Division". The search for uranium was fruitless as no ore grade uranium exists in this area. The moly orebody was first developed and mined by the Primos Exploration Company from 1914 to 1919. During World War II, the mine was purchased by the government and turned over to the Molybdenum Corporation of America to operate. In 1963 AMAX Inc. purchased the property for $2 million. After spending nearly $30 million for exploration and development, AMAX put the mine into production again in 1967.

For many reasons it appears that deep-rooted, perennial shrubs offer potential for improved stabilization and provide maintenance-free vegetative cover to harsh sites where perennial grasses have not been successful. The very fact that a drought-adapted shrub has a massive root system that can use moisture from a greater volume of mineral waste soil materials suggests that long-range arid environment resource development may be greatly enhanced by utilization of desirable forage shrubs. An effort is underway to assemble information and plant materials of promising species from many arid regions of the world. Surprisingly, many of the better plants for arid sites are quite high in protein content, and with proper management, breeding, and selection may prove to be very desirable livestock feed. Advancements in arid-land solid waste stabilization hold favorable promise for many industries that mine and mill in arid regions for effective reclamation of disturbed areas. Particularly exciting is the possibility of establishment of high density maintenance-free vegetative cover of climax vegetation that reclaims the disturbed area back to its original land use. Because of high shrub productivity, stabilization potential, nutritional quality, and reclamation success, greater use should be made of shrubs in disturbed land reclamation associated with mining and milling operations in harsh arid environments.

Because of the competitive nature of the iron ore pelletizing industry, commodities required for the production of pellets are continually being scrutinized to minimize their usage and offset rapidly escalating costs. In the Tilden pellet plant, the usage of one commodity, bentonite, has been reduced from over twenty-four pounds per long ton of pellets to as low as eight pounds per long ton. The evolution of bentonite usage from plant start-up to the present time is described.

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the Separation Efficiency: ES = (R ? Rg) where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and Rg the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The Separation Efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products.

Productive and beneficial use of reclaimed surface-mined land is a concern of industry, government, and the general public. An investigation was conducted of current mined-land planning practices to aid in the development of a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials. This investigation considered both the industry and public planning approach to mined-land planning and was based primarily upon three case studies conducted in various regions of the United States. The site planning process that was developed during the investigation is iterative in nature and has been designed specifically for the mining industry. It centers around preliminary studies and data collection, development of land use alternatives, and the evaluation of alternatives. Use of this process facilitates the evaluation of economic, environ- mental, and social impacts of postmining land use alternatives. In this paper, the process is presented along with a description of its development, application, and significance.

Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is a software and data communication system developed at the University of Alabama. This system integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis and forecasting of forthcoming events. The main objective of this system is to provide stability information on longwall panels including excessive shield load, low setting pressure, leg leakage and poor shield performance, eminent maintenance problems, etc. Analyses of various mining and geological parameters were also performed to determine past and present roof characteristics and to forecast roof loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. A local coal mine in the Warrior Coal Basin has adopted this system to provide daily evaluation of ground stability and maintenance problems of their longwall panels. Two years of experience with this system is covered in this paper.

A size-continuous breakage kinetics model is postulated and supported with industrial grinding mill data. It is shown that the kinetics parameters include the effects of possible classification at the mill discharge. The estimated parameters were then used in the kinetics model to simulate the behavior of a grinding mill in open and closed circuit operation. While material transport and kinetics are equally important in open loop operation, heavy recycle in a closed circuit make a detailed material transport model for grinding unnecessary. In effect, the mill can be considered as backmixed. This suggests that more emphasis should be placed on modeling the classifier than the development of detailed material transport models for the grinding mill.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Accurate knowledge of the gas content of coal seams has always been important, according to the work of W. P. Diamond and J. R. Levine, 1981, but is becoming increasingly important for several reasons: Excessive gas emissions in the mine can create explosion hazards. Depletion of shallower coal reserves is forcing underground operations to greater depths where coal gas content is often greater. Natural gas prices and the need for new energy sources make naturally occurring coal gas a potential resource of economic interest. Information on coal gas content will impact mine designs, mine ventilation system specifications, and the effectiveness of methane control procedures used. Accurate resource assessment is needed for projecting and designing potential gas utilization enterprises. The emphasis upon methane hazards in mining operations, and upon potential methane utilization, has led us to improve upon the procedures used to determine coalbed methane levels.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of fluorspar from 35 domestic and 50 foreign, mines and deposits in 13 countries. Only 6 domestic properties are considered to be economic reserves, as 29 domestic deposits were found to have an average total cost of production that was uneconomical at a breakeven (0 pct) DCFROR. The 50 foreign properties evaluated were selected to represent at least 85 pct of the known demonstrated fluorspar resources located in market economy countries and China. All evaluated foreign operations were found to be economic to marginally economic in January 1984 dollars. World demonstrated ore reserves of 344 million metric tons (mt) containing 123 million mt of CaF2 were evaluated for the 56 operations. Average total costs needed to cover all costs over the life of each operation were determined for all recoverable fluorspar products. Comparisons of mining, beneficiation, and transportation costs per mt of fluorspar concentrate illustrate advantages between countries. Of the three largest producing countries, China, with its high-grade, low-cost operations had the lowest weighted average total cost of production ($38/mt concentrate). Mexico was next at $54/mt concentrate, and South Africa needed an average of $90/mt of concentrate to cover all costs of production for its low grade deposits.
