A primary goal of Ground Control Research, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is to develop information that can be used by the mining industry to reduce accidents and fatalities due to failure of mine roof. A specific research objective is to determine methods to detect hazardous coal mine roof. This paper reviews the existing and experimental techniques, and describes a recent Bureau of Mines contract research project that resulted in a simple technique and prototype instrument for evaluating mine roof competence.

[Portland cement is a product made from a combination of limestone and argillaceous material which would supply the necessary amounts f calcium, silica, alumina and iron to form cementious compounds when fired at high temperatures. The resulting mixture, usually around 80% limestone and 20% argillaceous, is ground nine (80% -200 mesh), blended and then fired1 (2600-2700°F) to produce a cement clinker from which the final cement product is produced by grinding. The argillaceous component can be shale, clay, slate or other sources of the individual components of silica, alumina and iron. This paper deals with a case where a clay component was under consideration. The planned Plant site was to be located at a well defined limestone deposit. When it came to the argillaceous component, the nearest uniform deposit of clay was over 50 miles away and would require purchase of land or clay from the owner plus the daily delivery costs to the plant site. This situation made the plant site economically questionable. It was decided that a local clay deposit, which was available at the plant site but was orginally not considered due to lack of chemical uniformity and its high free silica content, would be reconsidered.]

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. Cyprus Amax's interest in Russia began before the mid-1991 breakup of the former Soviet Union. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began searching for such an opportunity. Early this year, production will begin at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1.75-kt/d (1,930-stpd) open-pit operation that will produce more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. Identifying Russian mining opportunities In late 1990, the first Cyprus Amax people travelled to Russia. The trip was to determine the potential for western firms to develop profitable mines. This encouraging visit suggested that Cyprus Amax focus on the Russian Far East with its mineral riches and its easier access to the United States. The company's initial efforts thus focused on working with the Soviet Union's Northeast Geologic Expedition, the then government agency for exploration and geology in Russia's Far East. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Cyprus Amax continued working with the same people, but they now represented new independent, nongovernmental entities. For three years, Cyprus Amax investigated numerous deposits. This resulted in the identification of two properties of significant interest, one of which was Kubaka. Location Kubaka is located in the Northern Evensk District of the Magadan Oblast in the Russian Far East. This is an area east of Siberia. The project is situated in a mountainous area of the Kolyma Range, about 300 km (985 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. It is 285 km (180 miles) north of the fishing village of Evensk and 380 km (235 miles) northeast of the silver-mining town Omsukchan. The site is 950 km (590 miles) northeast of the regional capital city of Magadan. Magadan, the political and economic center of the Oblast, has a population of about 150,000 people. In October, November and December, teachers at the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) area conventions were lured to visit the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) booth by the promise of free rocks, video tapes, and literature on earth science topics. Teachers were content to stand in lines that at times took as much as an hour and a half to progress through the exhibit. Adding to their interest was the opportunity to converse with people from the minerals industry who were staffing the booth. The MEC was formed by a group of associations and companies in the minerals industry. They felt the need to educate the public about the current-day minerals industry and how it affects everyone's life. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME) underwrote the major expenses of exhibit space and exhibitor services at all three conventions in 1997. SME members have been active in staffing and chairing the NSTA exhibit booth. But they represented only about one-third of the volunteers for the booth. Additional volunteers were drawn from local minerals companies, associations, interested teachers and other support groups. (See donors list on page 64.) In 1997, the conventions were held in Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO and Nashville, TN. The local SME GEM Committees chaired Pittsburgh and Denver and The Rogers Group Inc. supplied the chairperson in Nashville. Each exhibit relies on a local committee to plan and run the booth. Support is available from the GEM Projects Coordinator at SME headquarters. Usually the chair of the committee is drawn from the local SME membership. It is easy to see why the MEC booth is so popular. Free literature, videos, posters, workshop packets and rock specimens were handed out to about 5,500 science teachers at the three sites. Feedback from the attending teachers was overwhelmingly positive: "Who do we thank for these great materials?" Some of those great materials included Caterpillar's outstanding donation of Common Ground videos and teacher packets for Pittsburgh, Denver and Nashville for every teacher expected to attend. Placer Dome sent enough What's a Mine coloring books and It Comes from a Mine activity books for teachers at all three sites. Newmont supplied all teachers with an excellent poster describing gold processing. Women in Mining Education Foundation had plenty of its classroom activity handouts. The American Coal Foundation provided a list of its educational materials that are given out free to teachers who request them on school letterhead. The National Mining Association had its Facts About Minerals and Facts About Coal available. US Borax provided the funding to reproduce the NMA black and white posters that were published as inserts in Mining Voice magazine. In addition, each site had other materials chosen by the local committees to round out their selections. At each exhibit site, committees raise between $8,000 and $12,000 in cash donations from industry to support the high overhead of producing this exhibit. Usually, there are between 12 and 18 different rock specimens representing a range of mineral ores from aggregates to the metal ores. The committee arranged to have these donated (along with the freight charges to ship them to the site). Literature is also donated by the industry. It covers a diverse spectrum from basic information on rocks and minerals to posters, flow charts, videos and coloring books. Other donations include storage space before the event, haulage of items to the hall and door prizes. These exhibits could not have been staged without the network of SME Local Sections and the able chairs and committees at each site. At this time, credit should be given to their extensive donation of time and effort.

Horsepower requirement is recognized as a most important equipment characteristic. Other critical equipment characteristics will be isolated and analyzed by traditional operations research techniques, using off-highway trucks as an archetype. A computer search technique has been developed, employing various production and cost analyses. With this model, the optimum combination of horsepower, capacity, and velocity can be found, minimizing handling cost per ton. An example of the program's use and interpretation of its results will conclude the paper.

With ore grades continually decreasing and finer mill feed requirements, it becomes increasingly important to have the capability to handle the larger tonnages economically. With the 10 ft. Standard capable of reducing 1,633 metric tons per hour (1,800 short tons per hour) to 80 percent passing 50 MM (2 inches) and the 10 ft. Short Head following to produce a mill feed of all minus 12 MM (1/2 inch) at a rate of 608 metric tons per hour (670 short tons per hour), we feel significant savings will be realized in installation and operating costs. The largest concentration of cost in the secondary and tertiary crushing stations is the building itself that houses the process equipment. An example of the savings to be attained can be seen from an examination of a 40,820 metric ton (45,000 short ton) per day crushing plant. A total of nine 7 ft. Symons Cone crushers is used to generate 12 MM (1/2 inch) ball mill feed. The average center distance between units is 6.1 M (20 feet) and allowing a 6.1 M (20 feet) nominal distance from the centerline to the wails, the building becomes 61 M (200 feet) long. For this production rate, four 10 ft. Symons Cone crushers would be required. With the 10 ft. crushing plant requiring a center distance spacing of 7.6 M (25 feet), the building length totals approximately 38 M (125 feet). Construction costs vary depending on location, but a reduction in building length from 61 M (200 feet) to 38 M (125 feet) will result in estimated savings of between $2,500,000 and S4,000,000. While the 10 ft. Symons Cone has been involved in a number of feasibility studies for some time, the Process Machinery Division of Rexnord commenced detail design work on the 10 ft. Cone crusher in 1972. For comparison purposes, the 10 ft. and 7 ft. capacities are given in Table 1.

In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

As a Rock Mechanics investigator, the author has, Over his career, attempted to use his best knowledge in developing better rock control fixtures. Based on the experience of nine years of development of friction rock stabilizers, in 1980 he decided to launch a new investigation to develop a unique roof support fixture which would fit the coal mining market. The largest single user of roof bolts in the world is the American coal mining industry, historically using up to 100 million fixtures per year. In 1989 they used approximately 82 million fixtures.

The understanding of the influence of the different types of apatite on the performance of mineral processing of igneous phosphate ores is still a challenge due to the difficulty to explain why some types of apatite floats in the froth flotation cell and others do not under the same conditions. Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão mine: predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and less frequently yellow apatite. The chemical composition of these types of apatite was determined by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and LA-ICP-MS. Blue and green apatite respond well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite is the one bearing the lowest P2O5 content and the largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest P and Ca grades and lowest substitution level. A negative correlation of the amount of phosphorus with fluorine was observed. Furthermore, impregnation of iron oxide-hydroxides in the yellow apatite was also observed. Therefore, the low flotation behaviour is due to low crystallinity coupled with impregnation onto its surface.

The project involves the construction of a new aqueduct tunnel by an Earth Pressure Balance TBM tunnel for the Novaliches-Balara Aqueduct No 4 (NBAQ4) project in Metro Manila. It comprises a 7.3 km long and 3.1 m internal diameter tunnel that can deliver up to 1,000 MLD of raw water and the tunnel passes under urban residential and urban populated areas adjacent to and along Commonwealth Avenue. A new reservoir intake structure was constructed in the La Mesa reservoir by a cofferdam and the TBM breakthrough connected the reservoir to the outlet surge shaft structure and the downstream pipe network system connecting to the Balara Water Treatment Plant. The TBM incorporated a double articulated head configuration to allow tight 80 m radius curves to navigate some of the difficult alignment considerations. The alignment passed very close to some existing foundations for MRT7 and needed to clear several tight curves to remain within government land ownership. The project excavated through the local Guadalupe weak rock formations and there was minimal ground movements observed as a result of the work.

In the constant search for ways and means of improving the quality of coke and thus making its use at the blast-fornace more satisfactory and economical, it has become increasingly evident that the present laboratory tests do not show the full picture of a coke's value as a blast-furnace fuel. This fact was recognized by Dr. A. C. Pieldner thirty-five years ago: (Ref. 1) here is perhaps no phase of fuel technicology which has aroused more discussion or regarding which there is more difference of opinion than the properties of coke which make it most suitable for blast-furnaces and other uses." Dr. Fieldner followed this assertion with a statement to the effect that men who write on this subject today (1923) have, because of conflicting experimental evidence brought forth in recent years, far less positive opinions on the matter than did writers of some years past. One is led to wonder if these statements are not just as true now as they were when first made.

Despite a global slowdown in most mining sectors, Caterpillar, the world?s largest mining equipment maker continues to forge ahead with new, and improved offerings to the global mining industry. On Nov. 10, as part of its Loading and Hauling Mining Focus Session at its Tinaja Hills proving grounds south of Tucson, AZ, Caterpillar unveiled to customers and media its two latest mining products, the 994K wheel loader and 6020B hydraulic shovel. The Caterpillar 994K wheel loader builds on a nearly 25-year history of the 994 model but with one noticeable difference ? the 994K is bigger ? much bigger. Weighing in at 239,142 kg (527,218 lb) the 994 K is up to 20 percent larger and comes with up to 30 percent increase in payload capacity. This behemoth of a machine is currently being tested at Caterpillar?s Tucson Proving Grounds, Anglo Gold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine in Colorado and Taseko?s Gibraltor copper and molybdenum mine in British Columbia, Canada.

INTRODUCTION How accurate are past and present employee radondaughter exposure records of underground uranium miners employed in the United States? This often-debated question is essential for future substantiation of safe exposure limits. An apparent discrepancy between company-reported exposures and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) projected exposures was detected in 1977. For these reasons a need for an updated comparison of these exposure data was indicated. This paper gives some of the conclusions of the earlier study and compares more recent exposure records compiled by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., with projected exposures based on sampling by Federal mine inspectors. EARLIER STUDY In its 1977 Annual Report (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978), MSHA's predecessor, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), reported that there was "an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company records." Both company records and MESA's projections from samples taken during routine Federal inspections indicated reductions in the average exposure of underground uranium miners from 1975 to 1977, but the MESA projections were over 4 times higher than the company-reported averages. This apparent discrepancy however, was based on a comparison of exposure data reported for all U.S. underground uranium miners. This projection more closely represented the average exposure of U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked 1,500 hours or more during the year. Exposures of such workers are reported each year by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (AIF) in summaries of exposure data reported to the AIF by uranium mining companies throughout the United States. (The AIF exposure summary for 1979 appears as tables A-1 and A-2 in the appendix of this paper.) Assuming that the average exposure for each exposure range category is the midpoint of each exposure range category, table 1 compares the estimated average exposures for U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked underground 1,500 hours or more each year in 1975 through 1977 with the exposures projected by MESA for those years. Reported- Projected Year (WLM) (WLM) 1975 1.59 5.68 1976 1.84 4.64 1977 1.68 4.08 1 Atomic Industrial Forum, 1976, 1977, 1978. 2 U.S. Dept. of the Interior, 1978.] Table 1 indicates that, even after adjustment to ensure better comparability an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company reported exposures for 1975-1977 exists; however, the apparent discrepancy diminished over the 3 years. Slade, 1977, explained some of the discrepancy between company records and MESA projections of miners' average radon-daughter exposures as follows: 1) Concentrations of radon daughters in some work areas can vary greatly during any one day. A variation from 0.3 WL to 17.0 WL has been measured in the same stope on the same day. 2) Seemingly simple abatement problems indicated by the regular Federal and State inspections were solved simply by manipulating the mine ventilation. 3) The methods used by mine operators to compute cumulative exposures were such that high radiation readings were seldom or never reflected in the records. For example, a work area sampled on Monday indicated a radon-daughter level equal to 0.2 WL and this was recorded. It was sampled again on Wednesday of the following week and the level was 2.2 WL. The miners were withdrawn or told to fix the ventilation, and when this was accomplished the area was sampled and found to be at 0.2 WL again. Although the miners could have been working in the higher concentration up to 6 days, this reading might never be reflected in their records. If it was recorded, only a fraction of the day on which it was discovered would be entered into the cumulative exposure calculation (time-weighted average). 4) Some of the mines visited used a mine average radiation concentration, and every employee working underground was given the same exposure per unit of time spent underground. As a result of the 1977 study, more stringent sampling and recordkeeping standards were proposed and public hearings held in 1977. The resulting new and revised health standards on radon-daughter sampling and exposure recordkeeping became effective August 30, 1979 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 1979). Prior to these new regulations, radondaughter sampling requirements were on an "as often as necessary" basis (Code of Federal Regulations, 1978). The new regulations required practically all active work areas in underground mines to be sampled at least once every 2 weeks, with many areas requiring weekly sampling. As a result of the Three Mile Accident and because of evidence indicating radiation protection problems, the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) undertook a major effort, with the assistance of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), to analyze radiation protection programs at 47 commercially operated nuclear power plants. This effort, the health physics appraisal program (HPAP), using a modified management oversite and risk tree analytical logic methodology (MORT) which consisted of analytical trees with applicable questions for each tree, was subsequently extended to include USNRC licensed uranium mills. In the uranium mill appraisal, a team of four senior radiation safety professionals spent a week at each mill evaluating the total health physics program. Prior to the HPAP, the USNRC inspection efforts were designed to determine if the licensees were fulfilling the requirements of the code of federal regulations and the mills source material license. The HPAP, however, was designed and structured to facilitate an integrated look at the total program. It is also directed into areas for which explicit NRC regulatory requirements may not currently exist. The latitude of the HPAP was designed to allow professional judgement in the evaluation of program adequacy, because merely meeting the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessarily ensure an adequate and effective health physics program. The results of the first eight site visits and the generic health physics problems identified within the uranium milling industry will be identified in this paper.

A stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model is developed based on mine site core log data to predict the horizontal and vertical permeabilities from the surface to the top of the caved zone at a longwall mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania. One hundred DFN realizations were generated to determine permeabilities for the isolated zone over an abutment pillar after mining the second panel. The results from this study show that the vertical and horizontal permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with field measurements, which indicates that the resultant permeability obtained from the field measurements is representative of the predicted permeabilities. With this agreement, the aperture data for other zones of the mine could be obtained from the geomechanical model — specifically, for the fractured zone over the gob. Based on the successful validation of this model, this model could be further developed to predict the permeability of the fractured zone over the gob with fracture aperture obtained from the geomechanical analysis. This will complete the fracture characterization of the overburden, which could be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a breach. This prediction could provide information on the associated risk of a casing breach and determination of methods to proactively prevent such an occurrence.

A number of previous publications have attempted to provide the practicing ventilation engineer with simple guidelines on the optimal velocity to be used in mine openings. Some of these velocities were meant to be used in metal mining operations and some were meant for coal mining. A careful review of these publications reveals that the optimal velocities were determined based upon assumptions that are not existent today. As a result, they are not suitable for use in a modern coal mine. This paper takes a new look at this problem and determines a statistical relationship for optimal velocity that can be applied under both current and future conditions. The analysis performed here is based upon the determination of the optimal velocity for coal mine entries under variations in power cost, mining cost differential, airway friction factor, time value of money, airway lifespan, and quantity of air carried. A total of 8400 different conditions were analyzed for optimal velocity using computer calculation of the capital and operating cost values. Using the individual values of the optimal velocity derived in the calculations, a linear regression equation was fitted to the data to relate the optimal velocity to the other six variables outlined above. This regression relationship allows the ventilation engineer to make an easy, rapid determination of the optimal velocity.

This work was completed in a 440 KW pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000 Kg/hr industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives of the work were to: (1) identify the variables which affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum sulfur removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. The variables which were identified as being important in sulfur capture were: Ca/S molar ratio, flue gas temperature at the limestone injection location, and limestone particle residence time. The maximum sulfur dioxide removal was 72%. The addition of limestone increased the particle deposition rate in the combustor; however, all deposits were easily removed by an air lance.
