Surface subsidence that results from longwall mining can be large magnitude and can affect significant areas. Conventional methods for subsidence monitoring include leveling, global positioning system (GPS), and photogrammetric surveys. Remote sensing techniques, including aerial LiDAR, terrestrial laser scanning, and satellite-based differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR), are also used to measure deformation associated with subsidence. DInSAR data are different than data from conventional subsidence surveys. Images capture data over large areas (hundreds of kilometers), and each pixel (data point) in an image quantifies the average displacement over an area of square meters. DInSAR data can have fairly high time resolution; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.

By understanding the ore breakage characteristics and utilising comminution circuit modelling, the benefits of SAG mill feed size manipulation can be readily assessed. This paper looks at the benefits and problems of total secondary crushing of mill feed and advocates partial secondary crushing as a means of improving grinding efficiency for certain hard ores. Case studies are reviewed for new and existing SAG mill circuits.

Effective gas management in coal mines, as well as proper ventilation design, is very important for maintaining the safety of underground coal miners. Advances in numerical modeling techniques have enabled evaluations of the coal mining environment using advanced grid designs and computed gas distributions through detailed mathematical models. These models help engineers to see the unseen areas of the mine through visualization of the data and ultimately help improve worker safety. This paper summarizes the modeling efforts conducted by NIOSH in the U.S. and CSIRO in Australia to address various gas management issues encountered in longwall mines. The modeling studies involved two of the most widely used grid-based techniques, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical reservoir modeling. This paper discusses the application of these techniques for gob inertization and gas control for spontaneous combustion, pre-mining degasification of coalbeds, gob gas venthole design and performance evaluation in longwalls, and gas management during development mining.

Although primarily cut-and-cover excavations are required for replacement of the existing elevated I-93 interstate highway through the heart of Boston for the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project, some mined tunnel construction was also undertaken. The mined tunneling conducted was the 22-m-wide northbound roadway structure which passed below a 20-m-deep operating underground subway station that was built in 1913. The innovative underpinning scheme used to support the subway station during construction resulted in the successful mining beneath the subway station with negligible vertical settlement. Two grouting galleries were carefully mined below the subway structure, and pre-grouting of the granulary, pervious glacial soils and weathered bedrock was carried out from these galleries. The reinforced concrete walls of the underpinning structure were constructed within three stacked drifts that were sequentially mined below each grouting gallery. After 11 cross adits were mined between the grouting galleries, cast-in-place post-tensioned girders that spanned between the stacked-drift walls were constructed to support the subway station. The stacked-drift walls also provided lateral support for the 22-m wide by 29-m long by13-m high opening beneath the girders.

Limestone-based material shows great promise for removal of arsenic from water. In laboratory tests, it has removed more than 95% or arsenic and more than 99% of cadmium and lead. In addition, the waste material appears to be suitable for recycling or disposal in an ordinary landfill. However, the efficiency of limestone for arsenic removal could be improved. Recent research has shown that iron treatment of limestone can enhance its arsenic-removal efficiency greatly, increasing its attractiveness as an alternative to other methods.

Silver Bell produces about 22,000T of fine copper annually from low-grade chalcocite and oxidized copper ore that is recovered by sulfuric acid leaching and SX-EW processing. The current mineable reserves are 146 million short tons averaging 0.39% Cu, at a 0.15% cutoff. Silver Bell utilizes two types of mining methods to develop the low-grade reserves: (1) a conventional blast, load and haul method for run-of-mine leach ore, and (2) rubblization of material on the margins of existing pits. Rubble leach ore is blasted, terraced with a bulldozer, and leached in place. Mining and/or rubble leaching is currently active in four separate pits. Laramide-age intrusive rocks host porphyry copper mineralization at Silver Bell. Quartz monzonite porphyry dikes and stocks, mafic-poor equigranular granite (alaskite), and sub-volcanic dacite porphyry are the predominant host rocks. Most of the ore currently mined comes from near-horizontal enrichment zones containing veinlets and disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite rimmed by chalcocite. Conversion from a milling operation to a leach only operation allowed for a much lower cutoff grade than was historically used at Silver Bell. Mine geologists were able to increase copper resources by drilling exploration targets that were previously interpreted to provide lower-grade mineralization below cutoff-grade for milling. Geologic parameters that effect the distribution of rubble and mineable leach ore include: ore grade and thickness, variable alteration styles in intrusive host rocks that affect fragmentation during blasting, acid consuming carbonate wallrocks (reactive skarn) which influence leach solution pH, solution flow paths and drainage, presence of leachable oxide mineralization in non-reactive skarn, and depth to hypogene mineralization which is currently uneconomic. Geologic parameters are used to predict rubble bench limits, vary blast hole spacing for consistent fragmentation, and correct errors in mineral zone classification based solely on blast hole assays. An expansion-drilling program has identified approximately 150 million tons of new leachable copper resources with an average grade of 0.35% Cu.

The 5 km (16,194 lf) of 6.1m (20 ft) diameter TBM driven tunnel built by the J.F.Shea Co. will serve as sewage overflow storage. The TBM tunnel and four connecting tunnels excavated by drill and blast methods in hard granite will remain unlined. Based on the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR), the Contract documents provided a design with no required pattern of rock bolts, no probing, no pre-excavation or consolidation grouting, and lastly, no final lining of the tunnels was deemed necessary. This paper will provide a general overview of these topics with the emphasis on the actual ground conditions encountered versus the projected conditions provided in the GBR and how the GBR reflected the design of the project. Proposed modifications to the temporary and permanent ground support will be presented and the necessity of probing and pre-excavation grouting will be evaluated.

NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

Air flow patterns in the face area of a room-and-pillar mining are critical for understanding the dust dispersion characteristics and for developing engineering controls. SIUC has previously performed a CFD study to analyze the airflow patterns in the face area when continuous miner is making a straight cut. Results from this study identified low air velocity and re-circulation zones in the face area and illustrated the significance of line curtain, and scrubber operation on the air flow patterns. This paper discusses similar analyses when continuous miner is making a right turn cut as it is considered to be the dustiest cut among all the cuts made to advance an entry through a crosscut. This paper presents results for box-cut development for a right hand turn x-cut. This paper also addresses line curtain advance and air leakage through the curtain on the airflow patterns in the face area for such a cut. Low air velocity and recirculation zones were identified by analyzing the velocity vectors.

Recent accelerated exploration efforts in southwest China have progressively quantified the vast phosphate resources in the Yunnan Province. To date, according to Chinese geologists, potential reserves in the province may be on the order of 4 Gt, which would equal the entire US reserve base. Development of this vast reserve is underway at two sites located 60-70 km southwest of Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan. The first, the Kunyang open-pit phosphate mine, produces an estimated 1.5 Mt/a of 22-30% P20,5. The other project located north of Kunyang is the Haikou mine, which the Chinese consider a possible 2.0-Mt/a operation. Because average ore grades run 3% less than those of Kunyang, beneficiation will be necessary. While the latter project has been initiated on a small scale, it is basically still on the drawing board. Brown and Root and the US Bureau of Mines are assisting on the project. Both operations are under the direction a regional administration which reports to the Ministry of Chemical Industries in Beijing. Combined production from both mines could represent some 70% of China's future productive capacity. Ore reserves in the region are estimated at 400 Mt by local officials. Geology of the District The phosphates are considered Cambrian in age and rest on a Precambrian dolomite. The Indian Ocean, Chinese geologists say, may have been the original source. The line of deposition stretches on a trend from Vietnam in the southwest, through Yunnan, into Sichuan Province to the northeast. Because the area is considered very stable from a geologic viewpoint, large quantities of phosphate have been deposited and large outcrops are known to occur everywhere in the province, according to Chinese sources. The Kunyang and Haikou ore bodies are thought to be two wings of an anticline with the former the southern portion, and the latter the northern portion. Each ore body strikes on an east-west axis. While there are many localized phosphate operations throughout the province, the Kunyang mine is the premium producer. Kunyang's Mining Development The Kunyang open-pit mine was opened in 1966. During the early years, operations were considered somewhat disorganized. Systematic mine planning and normal operations were not initiated until just two years ago, according to mine management. In 1979, Kunyang finally reached its design capacity of 1.5 Mt/a. The ore body consists of two phosphate beds separated by a band of shale. The top layer of phosphate varies from 4 to 8 m, averaging 6 m. The middle shale layer is 2 in. The third layer, which is not as rich as the top, is approximately 4 m. This contribution describes rock mechanics features of the Davis Cavern at the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, U.S.A. The mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota. In 2003 and again in 2008, the mine site was recommended for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) in cooperation with the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory under the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). The original Davis Cavern was excavated about 9.1x16.8x9.7 m high (30x55x32 ft high) in 1965 (Mitchell 2009) at a depth of 1,478 m (4850 ft). The purpose of the cavern was to house apparatus for detecting solar neutrinos. The experiment ultimately proved successful and earned R. Davis a share of the 2002 Nobel Prize in physics. Recently, a new experiment (LUX=Large Underground Xenon detector for dark matter particles and WIMP's=weakly interacting massive particles) was proposed for the Davis Cavern that required an increase in height of 2.4 m (8 ft). For many years, the Homestake gold mine was the deepest operating mine in North America. Development extended to the 8000 Level (2,438 m). The mine closed in 2003. Pumps were shut off and the water level rose to the 4350 Level, about 150 m (500 ft) above the Davis Cavern. Some six years later after selection for DUSEL proposal development by the National Science Foundation (NSF), access to the 4850 Level and the Davis Cavern was regained. Pumping has lowered the water level to well below the cavern floor. Figure 1 shows the layout and location of the Davis Cavern (Cavity). Detector tank, supporting steel, and so forth were subsequently removed. The cavern was re-supported and new access was developed. By August, 2010, 13,000 ft3 had been removed during enlargement and renovation of the Davis Cavern. Figure 2 shows the detector tank under construction in 1965.

Ultra fine grinding is becoming increasingly used in the mining industry over recent years. The development of large-scale units for high volume grinding of low value materials and concentrates has opened up new areas of economical metal extraction. The ability of stirred vertical mills to produce very fine particles with high surface areas, is providing mine operators with novel extraction possibilities within gold concentrate regrind for Biox or leach feed, Activox autoclave feed preparation and lime slaking operations. The paper will review design, operational and maintenance aspects of ANI-Metprotech stirred vertical mills, comparing these to tower mills, horizontal bead mills and attrition mills.

The efficiency of a coal mine ventilation circuit is usually measured by the ratio of the sum of the face quantities divided by the quantity supplied by the fans. Other types of systems use the power delivered to the power supplied to measure efficiency. This paper argues the case that the current measure may be inadequate and that by also looking at the power ratio, ventilation may be better managed. Problems associated with failing ventilation systems would be highlighted earlier so that crisis management could be avoided.

Part of the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway in Athens is the twin road tunnel in the vicinity of American College, with 20m excavation diameter. In the paper, the environmental and other requirements, the geometry and the geological – geotechnical characteristics of the rock formations in the construction area are given. Information regarding the modeling and analysis methods that are used for the design of the temporary support, the final lining and the wedge and slope stability analysis is described thoroughly. Finally, the results of the analyses are compared with these of measurements and general remarks during the construction of the tunnels.

"In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60% of the US coal production from underground mining methods. This represents a substantial, yet gradual increase from just under 50% over the last 5 years. As a result of this increased production share, the percentage of ground fall related fatalities in longwall mines has also increased when compared to all US underground coal mines. Additionally, about 80% of ground fall related fatalities have occurred in areas where the roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current US longwall support practices, a sample of 21 longwall mines were visited, representing about 40% of the currently active longwall mines in 4 of the 5 major US longwall producing regions. The resulting data was obtained from a wide variety of overburden depths, geologic conditions, mining heights, ground conditions, support practices, and gateroad configurations. The data collected is reported using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results from the research update previous efforts in classifying mining accidents and injuries as well as current support practices. This data provides a necessary background for future research aimed at further reduction of ground fall accidents and injuries. INTRODUCTION Maintaining ground stability in gateroad entries is essential for longwall productivity and safety (Campoli, 2015). In 2015, 148 unintentional roof falls were reported in US longwall mines. About 34% of these resulted in mineworker injuries. Safety considerations not only include injury from roof and rib falls but also egress from the longwall face during an emergency (Mucho et al., 1999). Over the past 30 years, a number of researchers have studied longwall tailgate support performance (Mirabile, 2015). This research aims to take a snapshot of the ground support installed in modern US longwall mines and provide a supplement and update to the overview provided by Barczak (2005). This will provide a framework for future research into improving gateroad support systems. BACKGROUND Large unplanned roof falls at or above the primary support or those impeding travel and/or ventilation must be reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Reportable roof falls, normalized based on production in million metric tons, generally relate to the amount of roof exposed during the mining process (Pappas and Mark, 2012) and provide an evidence-based statistical background for this review of current support practices. Figure 1 shows the reportable roof fall rate in US underground longwall mines for the period 2006-2015 (MSHA, 2016). Over the past decade, roof fall rates have shown a gradual decrease with numbers now at a rate nearly half of what was observed just five years ago. However, over the past few years, roof fall rates in US longwall mines appear to have stagnated at levels just over 1 per 2,000,000 tonnes mined."

This geometallurgical study examines the gangue mineral variability at the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine in Utah. Understanding an orebody?s mineralogy is important for mine and mill planning because it provides information on the size, texture, and distribution of ore minerals, the relationship between ore and gangue minerals, and the extent and type of alteration. Quantification of the mineralogical variability and properties of an orebody provides valuable input to the ore model and may have a significant effect on recovery optimization. This study was designed to be carried out on an initially detailed scale in order to develop a robust methodology for measuring and quantifying specific parameters, such as the distribution of mineral phases, alteration assemblages and fractures from key ore domains at the Bingham Canyon mine (Figure 1). Details of the methodology are reported below. This technique can be applied to testing the impact of mineralogy on a number of processing parameters. [ ] Figure 1. The samples for this study were collected from the northwest part of the deposit circled on the map. PROJECT BACKGROUND Geology The Bingham Canyon deposit is a large porphyry Cu-Mo-Au deposit with associated skarn and base-metal replacement deposits mined in an open-pit mine measuring about 2.5 miles across and 4,000 feet deep. The deposit is hosted by the Bingham Stock, a Late Eocene to Mid-Oligocene intrusive complex. The skarn is hosted by the Late Carboniferous-age Bingham Mine Formation, which is comprised of quartzites and basal limestones (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). The Bingham Stock is a composite intrusive complex that was emplaced over a period of about two million years. The oldest phase is described as a fine-grained equigranular monzonite (MZ), which intruded the country rocks at 39.8 ± 0.4 Ma (U-Pb zircon TIMS age) (Parry et al., 2001). Subsequently, the quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP) was emplaced, followed by intrusion of a latite porphyry (LP). The final intrusive phase, which forms narrow dikes that crosscut the Bingham Stock, is represented by a quartz latite porphyry (QLP), which is dated to 37.5 ± 0.4 Ma by 40Ar/39Ar dating of sanidine (Deino and Keith, 1998). Also present, are a minette dike in contact with a QLP dike (Waite et al., 1998; Deino and Keith, 1998), and a biotite porphyry (BP), a quartz latite porphyry breccia (QLPbx), and a pebble dike (Redmond, 2002). The copper orebody is centered above the Bingham Stock and forms an inverted cup shape with three high-grade copper zones extending to depth. Molybdenite mineralization occurs within and extends below the copper orebody, but is not correlated with copper mineralization. The main sulfide assemblage is chalcopyrite, bornite, molybdenite, and pyrite. Gold is locally intergrown with chalcopyrite and bornite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998; Phillips et al., 1998). The surrounding country rocks host skarn deposits with three main ore types - garnet skarns, massive sulfides, and iron oxides. The garnet skarns contain chalcopyrite and pyrite with magnetite veins. In the massive sulfides chalcopyrite and pyrite occur either in banded sulfides or in unconsolidated microbreccias. The iron oxides contain disseminated chalcopyrite with minor chalcocite and bornite (Harrison and Reid, 1998). The deposit is overprinted by several stages of alteration. Potassic alteration is concentrated at the center of the deposit. It is surrounded and partially overlapped by a propylitic alteration zone. Both zones are overprinted by sericitic alteration. In the northern part of the deposit evidence for argillic alteration can be found (Bowman et al., 1987). Similarly, the skarn deposit was also overprinted by several stages of alteration: wollastonite, idocrase, and garnet in cherty limestones, and quartz and diopside forming in calcareous quartzites. Distally, diopside was replaced by talc, tremolite, dolomite, secondary calcite, and pyrite, and quartz and sulfide veinlets with biotite and actinolite selvages are present. Andradite garnet, diopside, quartz, magnetite, hematite, and copper sulfides were overprinted by wollastonite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). Because the monzonite, quartz monzonite porphyry, latite porphyry, and quartz latite porphyry host the bulk of the mineralization, our research is focused on these lithologic units. Geometallurgy On the basis of geological (lithology, alteration assemblages, fracture density, copper mineralization) and metallurgical properties, the deposit has been divided into 33 ore domains by mine geologists and metallurgists (Figure 1). In map view, these domains cross geologically defined boundaries (MZ, QMP etc.). These domains reflect regions of the deposit that have particular, mapable attributes or properties. They reflect a combination of geological and mineralogical characteristics that combine to impact processing. Alteration, for example, as shown by talc mineralization, is one such key feature. The Mini-DiscTM cutter drill bit is a radical design departure from the traditional tri-cone rockdrill bit. Miniature disc type cutting tools as small as 3.25 inches (82.5 mm) diameter are fitted to a bit body to cut individual concentric kerfs. The action is the same as that commonly used on large tunnel boring machines but miniaturized. The high performance rate and efficiency of a disc cutter are the result of producing a large proportion rock chips rather than sand or powder. The Mini-DiscTM drill bit, referred to as the “Disc Bit” has other unique features as well. It can be re-greased between runs. It can be rebuilt in the field in about 15 minutes, cutters can be replaced and the Disc-Bit appears to require less down hole hydraulic power than conventional bits. Thoroughly tested in the laboratory, the bit has recently been undergoing field trials in well drilling, blast hole drilling and shaft drilling. As any engineer knows, the laboratory can not shake out all the problems but it eliminates the more glaring weaknesses. Performance results have been exhilarating, and a few mechanical problems were discovered and largely overcome. This paper is a progress report.

Narrow vein mining, with enough challenge and also where the cutting edge technology can be applied, is still a very important and exciting portion of the mining industry. Based on the deposit characteristics, the most flexible mining method, cut and fill, has been being tested mining this high grade Northern Nevada property, Hollister, since the year of 2008. In the last three years, 254,000 tons of ore were hauled out of the portal and 23,000 feet of development were excavated underground with the winning of several safety and environmental awards. Together with mine geology, the essential segments include mining cycle, ground control, ventilation, grade control and backfill method in cut and fill stopes were covered in this paper.

In the dimension stone industry, workers in processing shops may be exposed to harmful levels of respirable silica dust when conducting the different tasks in stone preparation, which include cutting, grinding, polishing, and thermaling. To protect workers from this health hazard, operators sometimes ventilate processing shops using fan-powered dust collectors to capture and filter dust. To investigate this issue, NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, in cooperation with a dimension stone operation, upgraded an off-the-shelf dust collector the operator was utilizing in a polishing/cutting shop. Initial dust surveys showed that the unit was under-designed for the amount of dust being generated in the shop. The objective of the research was to cost-effectively increase the air cleaning volume and improve dust capture efficiency of the unit with a larger motor and blower. The unit?s original stock 0.56 kw motor and blower was replaced with a 2.24 kw motor and matching blower to increase airflow. The unit was evaluated both in the laboratory and the shop before and after the retrofit to determine the improvement of the upgrade. The study showed that the 2.24 kw upgrade improved the performance over the original 0.56 kw motor resulting in more dust being cleaned from the ambient air in the shop. The 2.24 kw unit cleaned 19% more air and captured 32% more respirable dust than the 0.56 kw unit.

The “China & East Asia Mineral and Energy Re-sources Symposium — CEAR 2000” was held Jan. 23-26, 2000 in Denver, CO. Conference sponsors included Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado and the Asian Journal of Mining. The meeting was attended by representatives from China, Japan, Mongolia, Korea, eastern Russia (Siberia) and the United States. The US attendees consisted of interested parties from mining and energy companies, financial institutions, consultants and government agencies. In his opening statements, L. Maness, Jr., president of Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado, said that the “goal of the conference was to make jobs and friendships and to introduce people to each other.” The conference provided an opportunity for Western mining interests, including mining companies and investors, to meet with government agencies from both sides of the Pacific.
