A prediction model, developed by Central Mining Research Institute (India) for evaluation of fire risk rating of underground coal mine panels in bord and pillar working in respect of their proneness to spontaneous heating, is presented in this paper. The concept used in this model is innovative and user friendly. This model may be applied to a panel where extraction is carried out using any of the techniques: i) depillaring with formation of small pillars as final operation, ii) extraction by broadening of galleries, iii) depillaring with hydraulic sand stowing, and iv) depillaring with caving. Here, major fire risk parameters are short-listed and divided into three broad groups in accordance with the nature of their contribution to the spontaneous heating of a mine panel. The paper describes the procedure for estimating the fire risk rating of individual groups using separate objective type models developed for this purpose. Then it evaluates the overall fire risk rating of the panel by combining the fire risk ratings of all the three broad groups. The model is tested with the field data collected from different collieries spreading across the country and with the laboratory data for critical assessment of fitness. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc thesis This paper investigates the effects of thiol collectors: xanthates, dithiophosphates, dithiocarbamates and mixtures of these on the froth flotation performance obtained with a bornite-rich copper sulphide ore from Okiep Copper Mine with a feed grade of 1.8%copper. Batch flotation tests were used to assess the performance in terms of mass-water recovery, sulphur grade-recovery and copper grade-recovery relationships and the Klimpel rate constant for copper recovery. The results showed that the di-ethyl-dithiocar-bamate (di C2-DTC) was the weakest collector of copper sulphide minerals. Highest copper recoveries were obtained with the di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP), which were accompanied with more watery froths and lower copper grades demonstrating frothing properties in addition to collector action. Superior copper recoveries were obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10% di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP) and 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10%di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate (di C2-DTC) collector mixtures compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at an equivalent collector dosage of 0.139 mol/ton ore (a dosage equivalent to 20 g sodium ethyl xanthate per ton ore). A superior copper grade was obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate: 10% di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate collector mixture at a dosage of 0.0695 mol/ton ore compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at the same equivalent dosage. The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

The platinum mining industry has experienced a significant increase in fatal accidents. Mine accidents are in principle preventable, and there is enormous pressure on employers to reverse this trend. This paper reviews safety management systems (SMS) as well as behaviour-based safety (BBS). Based on the review, SWOT analyses are performed on the SMS and BBS processes and a model of an integrated safety management system (ISMS) is introduced. A number of fatal accidents is analysed to identify factors that contributed to accidents in the mining industry. Thereafter the potential weaknesses of an SMS of a platinum mine are exposed and the potential benefits of implementing the ISMS for this case study are demonstrated.

The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

In this study, graphical and mathematical methods used to determine operating points in single or multiple fan ventilation systems are summarized. The problem is mathematically formulized for parallel connected fans in which analytical solutions are not possible. For n number of parallel connected fans, a non-linear equation system that consists of n number of non-linear equation sis derived. The Newton-Raphson method, which is a numerical analysis method, is adapted to solve this non-linear equation system and the solution steps are given as an algorithm. A computer program based on this algorithm is written and its applicability is proved.

SYNOPSIS An analysis was made of records of accidents involving Bantu mineworkers and which resulted in either minor injuries or hospitalizations to determine patterns in underground accidents from which to formulate priorities in accident prevention in gold mines. The results showed that: (i) specific labour categories, such as inexperienced men, are exposed to certain types of hazards the extent of which warrant the separate design of safety programmes to meet their specific needs; (ii) the systematic study of minor accidents provides a dependable source of. information of which safety departments could make greater use in their efforts to control and prevent mining accidents.

This paper presents an initial investigation into the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts in a two dimensional, thin reef scenario. Deposits with gradational mineralized zones, in the perpendicular sense, are not as well served by the use of reef accumulation and thickness as deposits characterized by a sharp distinction between ore and waste rock. South African Bushveld Complex platinum deposits and Witwatersrand gold deposits are examples of this distinction. The calculation of an optimal mining cut is of paramount importance in the mining of Bushveld platinum. Two-dimensional kriging of a constant stoping width mining cut is an effective method for resource calculations once a cut is decided, but this begs the question of how to decide on the cut. Comparison of multiple cuts is used as a way of achieving this decision on many of Anglo Platinum’s operations. Although the kriging of each cut is valid in isolation, occasional negative values occur when incremental grades between overlapping cuts are calculated. Negative incremental grades cannot reflect reality. They are thought to be related to the inability of the method to include the strong continuity in the perpendicular direction demonstrated by the relevant variograms. Co-kriging of related variables has been investigated as a potential means tore impose this inherent order relationship. Various co-kriging options have been investigated. The method has been tested on a real data set from an established platinum operation. One of three types of anomaly has been investigated so far. The results show that co-kriging the mining cut grade as the primary variable, with just one secondary variable, the reef thickness, eliminates most occurrences. Severe anomalies remaining are arguably indicative of population mixing and might be more effectively treated by rezoning the data. Aim—To investigate the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts as a method for resolving anomalies in the estimation of such cuts on Bushveld platinum deposits, with applicability to other thin reef type deposits with a gradational not sharp cut-off between ore and waste in the direction perpendicular to the reef. In recent years several mine researchers have studied the optimization of cutoff grade with the purpose of maximizing Net Present Value (NPV). The best and most popular one is the Lane algorithm. Based upon the Lane algorithm it is possible to calculate the optimum cutoff grade for mine, mill, and refinery capacities for single metal deposits with variable grades. The Lane algorithm cannot be used in multiple metal deposits. The reason is that, while in single metal deposits six points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grade, in multiple metal deposits an infinite number points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grades and objective function evaluation of these infinite points is impossible. In this study the Golden Section search method was used to calculate optimum cutoff grades of multiple metal deposits for the same conditions as Lane assumed in single metal deposits. Based on this method, grade-tonnage distribution uncertainty space of problem is guessed. In the next step, by selecting test points in uncertainty space and evaluating the objective function at these points, a part of uncertainty space will be eliminated. The procedure is then repeated until the uncertainty space has been sufficiently reduced to ensure that the optimum cutoff grades have been located to the required accuracy. Slag-metal equilibrium experiments were conducted at 1500ºC and1580ºC under 0.03 atm, 0.05 atm and 0.83 atm CO partial pressures using silica and Cr-oxide crucibles. The complex slags belonged toSiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-FeOx-CrOxand the metal phase to the Cr-Fe-C-Si-(S) systems. The carbon saturation of the metal phase was avoided using oxide crucibles and thus the results are pertinent to ferrochromium refining slags and processes. From equilibrium data and thermodynamic calculations, the CrO /(CrO+Cr2O3) ratio in the slag was determined as 0.75, 0.80 and 0.86 under 0.83 atm and 0.05 atm of CO pressure at 1500ºC and 0.03 atm and CO pressure at1580ºC, respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that a higher chromium content of the metal results in higher Cr in the slag, and chromium in slag decreases with increasing SiO2. The results were also sensitive to the crucibles used as these oxide crucibles saturated the slag either with respect to SiO2or Cr-oxides. It was also demonstrated that the relative amount of CrO in the slag was higher when SiO2crucibles were used in accord with thermo-dynamic calculations. Iso-concentration curves for carbon and chromium of the metal phase in equilibrium with the slag were drawn on a pseudo ternary SiO2? (AI2O3+CaO+MgO) ?(Cr2O3+Fe2O3) diagram. The activity coefficients and activities of carbon and chromium of the metal phase were also calculated from the experimental data and available thermodynamics information and were plotted as iso-activity curves in the same pseudo ternary diagram. Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

Samples of four different satellite materials were prepared by either hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of the powder or tungsten inert-gas welding of rod onto a 316 L stainless-steel substrate. The samples were subjected to a series of comparative erosion corrosion tests, and generally the Hipped samples experienced between 13 and 24 per cent less loss in mass than the equivalent welded alloys. Resistance to erosion corrosion increased with increasing carbon, chromium, and tungsten contents. Metallographic studies indicated the differences in carbide content between the different satellite materials, and the differences in morphology between the Hipped and welded samples. The behaviors and stress distributions of the inclined jointed rock masses with different dip angles obtained from DDA are compared to the results of laboratory tests. By calculating the block stress distributions, it is confirmed that DDA can reproduce the arching around the trap door when lowering the trap door. The shapes of arching change with the angles of inclined layers. In addition, the earth pressures acting on the trap door shows non-symmetrical distributions when the layers are not horizontal. The stress concentration occurs in one side of the rock masses close to the trap door. Furthermore, the surface settlements are also related to the inclined angle, and the loosening zone in rock masses can be different from Terzghi’s theory [1]. Since, simulations have good agreements with the laboratory test , it demonstrates the applicability of DDA to explain the mechanical behaviors of tunnel, such as arching phenomenon, non-symmetrical earth pressure distributions acting on the trap door, and the surface settlement profile in the jointed rock masses. Dans cet article est décrite l’étude numérique du perçage d’un tunnel dans un massif de couches rocheuses jointes inclinées. La simulation à l’aide de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA), en faisant varier l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche, nous apporte des résultats en termes de distributions de contraintes et de comportement des couches, résultats qui sont ensuite comparés avec des résultats de tests en laboratoire. Les résultats confirment le fait que la DDA est capable de reproduire le phénomène d’arcage autour de la trappe lorsque la trappe s’abaisse. Les formes d’arcage varient selon l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche. Par ailleurs, lorsque les couches ne sont pas horizontales, la distribution de pression agissant sur la trappe est assymmétrique. La concentration de contraintes se produit du coté proche de la trappe. De plus, les tassements de surface dépendent eux aussi de l’angle d’inclinaison. En conséquence, les résultats de simulation sont en accord avec les tests en laboratoire, ce qui prouve que la DDA permet d’expliquer des comportements mécaniques du tunnel tels que l’arcage, les distributions assymmétiques de pression du sol sur la trappe, ainsi que le profil du tassement de surface dans la masse de roches jointes. Das Verhalten und die Druckverteilungen in den unterschiedlich geneigten und geklüfteten Felsenmassen wird mit Hilfe des Discontinuous Deformation Analysis Programms (DDA) simuliert, und mit Laborversuchen verglichen. Die Resultate bestätigen, dass DDA der Gewölbewirkung im „Trapdoor“ Experiment gut reproduzieren kann. Die Form des Gewölbes, ändert sich mit unterschiedlichen Neigungswinkeln der Schichten. Bei geneigten Schichten entstehen unsymmetrische Druckverteilungen. Auch die Oberflächenabsenkung ist von dem Neigungswinkel abhängig. Die gute Übereinstimmung der Simulationen mit den Laborversuchen zeigt, dass die DDA-Methode gut geeignet ist, um das mechanische Verhalten von Tunneln, wie z.B. den Effekt der Gewölbewirkung, die unsymmetrischen Druckverteilungen bei geneigten Schichten, oder die Oberflächenabsenkung in geklüfteten Felsenmassen, zu erklären.

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

Beneficiation studies were conducted on a Portuguese feldspar ore, in order to obtain final products capable of being used in the ceramic industry. A simple scrubbing operation is enough to break the lumps in the feed. The ore deposit contains ca 35 x 106tonnesfrom which, by screening, three main products could be obtained. This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the 500/74 µm fraction, which constitutes about 27% of the ore, assaying 9.42% Al2O3,equivalent to approximately ca 46% feldspar, with a mean iron content of 0.29% iron oxides. Magnetic separation and froth flotation testwork was carried out, in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. Magnetic separation alone decreased the iron content of the feed to values between 0.04 and 0.08% iron oxides with an average yield greater than 90%. Flotation with HF, provided a feldspar recovery of 45?46% with a concentrate assaying 17.6% Al2O3. The use of H2SO4, gave a recovery of 35?36% of feldspar concentrate, assaying 16.1% Al2O3. However, economic and environmental advantages of using sulphuric acid may compensate for the lower mass recovery. The iron content of0.12% iron oxides in these concentrates, could be reduced to 0.04?0.05%, by further magnetic separation.

Ongoing rockpass problems on mines within the South Africa region, prompted AngloGold Ashanti to embark on a risk assessment of major rockpasses. This commenced with the collection of relevant data to identify gaps in the available knowledge and identify existing problems. This was followed by an assessment of rockpass layouts to determine existing and potential interactions with other excavations. An initial risk assessment has been completed and the rockpasses have been ranked in terms of their risk profile. The lack of geological data and an easy and reliable method of surveying rockpasses have been identified as problem areas. Shortcoming is terms of rockpass management procedures have also been identified. Further work is required to quantify the risk in terms of probability of occurrence and consequences.

Relevant previous research is reviewed, including work by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization and the Deep Mine Cooperative Research Programme, and recommendations are offered for prospectively limiting pressure-related health risks.

Mintek and BacTech have joined forces to provide the metallurgical industry with bacterial-oxidation processes for the treatment of sulphide ores. The processes are aimed at both refractory gold-bearing and base-metal concentrates. Previously, BacTech had commercially implemented the refractory gold process at the Youanmi Gold Mine in Western Australia. More recently, the process has been incorporated in the Sulphide Treatment Plant at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, Australia. In addition, Mintek and BacTech have recently signed an agreement with the Laizhou Gold Metallurgy Plant in China?s Shandong Province, which will see the third commercial realization of the technology for refractory gold. Development of the base-metal technology is the subject of several papers in the proceedings of this colloquium. The implementation of the refractory gold technology at Beaconsfield is discussed in detail. Some important aspects that are covered include: ?Test work, and the choice of bacterial culture ?Process design choices, and the advantages of the Mintek-BacTech process ?Inoculum build-up ?Plant commissioning ?Plant performance. Besides the Laizhou project, Mintek and BacTech are currently investigating several other commercial prospects for the technology. These include the use of the technology for a gold-copper deposit, where the production of both gold and copper is envisaged.
