This paper introduces and defines the concept of a linkage between long-term planning parameters (?global assumptions?) and possible future world views as conceived in scenario planning. Scenario planning, the tool that is used to arrive at plausible future worldviews, is described in the context of the platinum industry. The interpretation of the scenarios into long-term planning parameters is made, followed by an illustration of how the long-term planning process has been adapted at Anglo Platinum to include the notion of uncertainty.

Bateman Minerals & Metals supplies the APIC Technologies which include the under-bed air-pulsed APIC jig and related technologies such as the JigScan controller and advanced mathematical models of the jig process. Bateman have developed a methodology for predicting process performance for jigs from simplified testing and modelling, based on batch equipment matched to industrial designs. Batch tests conducted on laboratory scale air-pulsed jigs can process small batches of material, such as those obtained from drill core samples. The novelty comes from using an advanced jig process model, ASTRAD, to link the results of batch and continuous jigs. The batch jig presented as a novelty in this paper has been designed to be hydraulically equivalent to the full-scale APIC Jig, allowing the generation of equivalent pulse shapes and using JigScan controller. Lump and fine ferrous ore material have been separated in this unit and any feed >1mm can be tested and extracted. The global test procedure and further modelling focus on the stratification of material, with emphasis on key aspects such as pulse shape, feed characteristics and residence time. The splitting of rejects from concentrates is itself more difficult to reproduce in batch jigging, however the ASTRAD model includes a separation imperfection module, and the APIC Technologies have extraction systems adapted to each type of material. Air pulsed batch jigs are available in several locations and are relocatable. They have been used to treat samples from Australia, South Africa and India as part of studies into ore processing using jigs. Each test layer is available for various physical testing procedures (density and chemical analyses). Test-work is performed on a case by case basis, and analysed using an advanced model ?now available over the internet. Some fundamentals of air-pulsed jigging are recapped along with some of the features of APIC jigs. The process of designing a ?hydraulically equivalent? batch jig test is then described. Some results from jigging tests are presented plus the results of the ASTRAD advanced jig model, which was first developed at the JKMRC with ferrous ores and coal and is now being supported and further developed and utilised by Bateman.

The Two Rivers Project is a feasibility study to evaluate the UG2 chromitite layer on Dwarsrivier372KT, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The project, which commenced in August 2001, is expected to receive go-ahead early in 2003. The project sponsors (AVMIN 55%, Implats 45%)required project delivery within a short timeframe requiring optimization of the geological and geostatistical programme. Geological modelling was carried out in parallel to the drilling programme, and significant up-front geostatistical preparatory work was done. The time saving was approximately 4 – 6 months on project delivery. The cost saving to the project (excluding NPV considerations) is estimated at R20–30 million. The paper describes the components of an Integrated Furnace Control system for covered-arc (shielded arc) smelting with results from the recently started 75 MW Cerro Matoso Line 2 Furnace. The paper starts with a review of the mechanisms of power and feed input and heat losses in the shielded-arc smelting process, and describes how the details of the control system are tailored to the process. The control modules of a covered-arc smelting furnace are described including measured results and screen captures. This paper focuses on Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc smelting, but similar approaches have been recently applied to other furnace processes including immersed-arc smelting.

The risk associated with mining induced seismicity is one of the major threats to the safety and sustainability of deep underground mines. This paper describes techniques that allow site practitioners to efficiently control such risks in mines. The proposed approaches rely on ground support to strategically control seismic risk and re-entry time to tactically control this risk. The strategic approach is based on the detailed understanding of past seismicity to as certain the seismic hazard of individual sources throughout the mine. This approach also relies on assessing the potential damage that these sources can induce on nearby excavations using the excavation vulnerability potential (EVP) and rockburst damage potential (RDP) concepts proposed by Heal et al. (2006). It is then possible to investigate how to reduce the risk of experiencing damaging seismicity in mine drives by locally enhancing the ground support system. The tactical approach relies on a proposed methodology to estimate reliable re-entry times or exclusion periods based on the seismic decay following blasting. Some examples of how these techniques have been applied in Australian mines are given.

Localized uniform conditioning is a technique developed to spatially locate selective mining unit grades that have been derived using uniform conditioning for the assessment of recoverable resources. The technique has the advantage of producing selective mining unit estimates conforming to the uniform conditioning panel-specific grade-tonnage curve while introducing spatial information at the scale of the selective mining units. This paper describes an alternative technique to localized uniform conditioning which does not explicitly require the uniform conditioning panel-specific grade-tonnage curve to localize the selective mining unit estimates. The technique can therefore be implemented in mining software where uniform conditioning is not available.

In this paper results from industrial trials of CaC2 injection during stainless steel production in an electric arc furnace at Sandvik Steel is presented. The main purpose of the investigation was to analyse the effect of the injection on slag foaming and final chromium oxide concentration in slag. The results show that both an increase in slag foaming and a decrease of the final chromium oxide could be obtained during the charges with CaC2injection. On the basis of the results, the economical requirements are also discussed. Both the technical and economical requirements could be achieved for steels alloyed with Mo. In order to secure the economical requirements for all steel grades of interest, the injection technology must be further developed. It would also be important to utilize the positive effect of the slag foaming on the electric energy consumption. The work has been performed as a part of MEFOS frame research programme with participants from Sandvik Steel, AKZO Nobel and Avesta Polarit. This study analyses the results of a pilot trial of a newly developed armed-chained stone-cutting machine. The machine was developed in Turkey and trialed at the Kaklik/Kocaba travertine quarries in the Denizli District. An armed-chained cutting machine is an alternative to the diamond wire cutting method more frequently used in the production of natural stone quarry blocks, and increases production efficiency and quality. Since there is no need to collapse the blocks using the armed-chained cutting production process, there is no risk of the block developing cracks. This results in a considerable increase in the efficiency of natural stone block production. The armed-chained cutting machine is easier both to assemble and run when compared to other block cutting methods. This process resulted in the production of a larger number of blocks at a lower cost within the same time frame, particularly in travertine quarries and in all other natural stone quarries. The block efficiency in travertine quarries was calculated as 65?80%using the armed-chained cutting machine, compared with 7?14% using the normal diamond wire cutting method.

The Norwegian ferroalloy industry has high ambitions regarding environmental standards. Basic research work has been performed to improve the fundamental understanding of ferroalloy processes and the environ-mental aspects. This paper will present work dealing with the understanding of formation and control of NOx, PAH and dioxins. During this work various techniques and methods have been applied, such as comprehensive industrial measurements, laboratory experiments, model development and application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The main goal has been to reduce the environmental impact of ferroalloy plants, by means of improving the combustion processes done by introducing new charging routines and optimized furnace operations, instead of installing expensive gas treatment systems. The Norwegian obligations in accordance with the Gothenburg protocol are to reduce the NOx emissions by 30%, compared with the 1990 level within 2010. Measures developed in this work have resulted in 40-60%reduction in NOx emission, and major reductions in PAH and dioxins for ferrosilicon and silicon metal plants. This has been achieved by introducing semi continuous charging and improved furnace operations. Semi continuous charging and optimized furnace operations are shown to reduce the blowing activity (i.e. emission of large quantity of SiO over the charge by direct channelling from the crater zone). It also reduces variation in off-gas temperature and dust production. To understand the processes and to achieve our results we have used online equipment, with fast sample rates and response times, to measure the off-gas compositions and temperatures. Most of the measuring techniques used are based upon optical principles making use of the absorption- and emission spectrum of the gases. In addition a new prototype instrument is developed for continuous measurement of off-gas characteristics, total dust amount and off-gas temperature. The presented work is a result of a long term co-operation research and development teamwork, between the industry and the research community, and has improved both the process and reduced the emissions. The work has introduced new process design and operation standards, and has resulted in ferroalloy production with better environmental standards.

Premier Diamond Mine exploits a kimberlite orebody using cave mining methods. A drilling level is established at the base of a block of ore to effect undercutting that leads to caving of the overlying ore. A second level is developed some 15 metres below the undercutting level to allow extraction of the ore once it has caved. As much as 45 per cent of the rock is removed on the extraction level creating a series of pillars. Undercutting creates abutment stresses, as high as 3 times the virgin stress, which affect the rock mass to a distance of 20 metres from the undercut face on the undercut level and on the extraction level 15 metres below. If the extraction level is completely developed prior to undercutting, where stress levels exceed 20 percent of the rock mass strength, extensive rock mass and support damage occurs as the undercut passes overhead. Rock mass damage takes the form of movement along existing joints and minor shear failure through intact rock. Support damage takes the form of cracking in rigid concrete linings. Where induced stresses exceed 50 per cent of the rock mass strength it is often impractical to keep excavations on the extraction level open. Rock mass damage takes the form of extensive failure of the rock in shear which evidences itself as propagation of the fracture zone around tunnels and footwall heave. Support damage results in destruction of shotcrete linings and concrete footwalls. As the interbolt support fails, badly fractured rock ravels around the steel tendons. Observation and monitoring at Premier Mine and on other cave mines has shown that induced stress levels and consequent damage are a function of :?the extraction ratio on the undercut and extraction level prior to undercutting ?the shape of the undercut face ?the rate of undercut advance ?the distance of leads and lags between adjacent tunnels on the undercut level. To ensure the stability of excavations, all of the above parameters must be carefully planned and the planned mining sequence rigidly enforced. The minimum of development is completed on the extraction level prior to the undercut passing overhead. Required development is then rapidly completed once the area has been de-stressed. Support is installed in three phases: ?Rockbolts are installed as soon as excavations are developed ?Wire mesh, steel tendon straps and a layer of shotcrete sufficient to protect the mesh and straps from damage by blasting and LHD loading is installed as soon as practical thereafter. Inevitably the shotcrete lining has to be replaced once the undercut has passed overhead.. ?Rigid shotcrete linings and concreted footwalls are completed only after the undercut has passed overhead and the area has been de-stressed.

It has been established that significant time-dependent stope convergence may occur over time periods of hours and days in certain hard-rock gold and platinum mines. The source of this time-dependent behaviour appears to be associated with both pre-existing discontinuities and with mining-induced fractures that form near the stope face. These induced fractures may be associated with blasting processes and may also be formed in response to high stress concentrations in the unmined regions immediately ahead of the stope face. In shallower platinum mining operations, time-dependent behaviour is, however, observed to be much less marked unless some form of specific mining-induced fracturing occurs. One particular case of considerable interest is the time-dependent behaviour that is found to be associated with the formation and deployment of crush pillars. The purpose of the paper is to present a simple limit-equilibrium computational model of this behaviour that is sensitive to both the formation sequence and the size of planned crush pillars in a mine layout. This model provides a useful means to optimize the sizing of crush pillars, and at the same time may be used to identify potentially hazardous circumstances in which pillars may not crush in a stable manner.

The use of valuable minerals is a necessity to maintain a modern society. Not only the iron, aluminium, coal and oil that are used in large quantities, but also the uranium, copper, vanadium, tungsten, antimony and many others play an essential role in the bigger picture of our modern civilisation. Minerals occur in a form and in places determined by a long history starting at the dawn of creation. Over billions of years the elements have combined in wondrous combinations and structures. They have been broken up by massive explosions, movements in the earth's crust and erosion by wind and water. They have been restructured and recreated in even more configurations by the application of heat and pressure, leached by and exposed to new chemical compounds. The result is that most valuable minerals are found in impure form and mixed up with other, less useful waste material. 2. Mineral Beneficiation The processes used for the purification and enhancement of an ore, to satisfy the needs of downstream applications, are collectively referred to as mineral beneficiation. Mineral Beneficiation starts in the mine where only that portion of the ore, that can be economically processed, is selectively extracted. It may also include ore blending, to ensure a more consistent feed to the following stage of valuable mineral recovery. The next stage in mineral beneficiation is the liberation of the valuable minerals from the gangue. This is achieved by blasting, crushing, milling and grinding down to an adequately fine grain size to facilitate good separation. Separation can be achieved by a variety of different techniques. ?Screening coarse from fine particles is an easy method if the valuable mineral is dominant in a certain screen fraction. ?Magnetic separators can differentiate minerals on the basis of their difference in magnetic susceptibility. ? Electrostatic separators differentiate on the basis of electrical conductivity. ? The differences in density are exploited in spirals and jigs. ? Particular surface properties provide a separation technique in flotation. ?The selective sorption properties of a collector medium are another option.

As part of JAGUARS (JApanese-German Underground Acoustic emission Research in South Africa), high-resolution tiltmeters were installed during 2007 at Mponeng gold mine, South Africa, in an attempt to study and understand the risks posed by in-mine seismic events and to subsequently use the knowledge gained to mitigate these risks. In December 2007, an M2.2 event occurred at Mponeng and was detected by the tiltmeters installed. The tilt expected for the M2.2 event is modelled through the use of numerical and analytical tools and utilizing, as input parameters, characteristics of the event such as the rupture area, the amount of slip, elastic properties of the rock, the state of stress before the event occurred, and frictional parameters of the rupture. The calculated tilt values are correlated and compared with the recorded data, and are found to be of the same order. Certain input parameters, such as the initial rupture point, are further constrained by varying them, during modelling, until the calculated and observed tilt values are approximately equal. From modelling, it can be concluded that the rupture point had to be closer to the location of the tiltmeters. In addition, possible locations acting as source areas for the observed aftertilt are determined. Further modelling still needs to be done to quantify the effects of the tunnel close to the tiltmeters and plastic deformation of the rock mass. The purpose of the project was to propose a coal clearance system (coal transportation system from the mining face to the plant) that could be used for the planned underground operations at Zondagsfontein Colliery. Components of the current coal clearance system were overlooked during feasibility studies. Subsequent studies of the coal clearance system revealed that the combined capacity of the two trunk belts does not match that of the shaft (main) belt. As a result production downtimes will be encountered due to bottlenecks in the system. Ways of addressing this challenge were analysed by weighing both advantages and disadvantages and ultimately a surge bin option was selected. Belt conveyor simulations were conducted in order to determine the optimum capacity of the surge bin. The configuration of the surge bin in relation to the two trunk belts was chosen by considering development cost, advantages, and disadvantages of each option. It was concluded and recommended that a 500 tonnes capacity surge bin is required to remove the bottleneck from the system.

Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly 'safe' compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

"The robust nature of alumina refractory materials presents opportunities for their in-process reclaiming and re-use in non-critical applications. Virgin refractories can be substituted with different quantities of reclaimed materials without compromising the quality of the refractory products. In this study, the effect of reclaimed bauxite on andalusite-containing refractory castables for tundish applications was investigated. The recycled bauxite was formulated in different proportions to replace virgin andalusite in the castables. Standard tests were conducted to evaluate the physical, physicochemical, and thermochemical properties of the formulated products. Static corrosion tests were conducted using tundish slag in order to simulate the actual operating conditions. The results show that the standard flow behaviour, open porosity, and bulk density of samples containing up to 22 mass% reclaimed bauxite were comparable to those of the reference castable. However, high-temperature properties such as static corrosion at 1400°C and hot modulus of rupture at 1500°C indicated that there is an upper constraint to the amount of substitution. The study demonstrated direct potential savings of up to 10% when the reclaimed alumina replacement ratio was increased to 22 mass%. IntroductionAlumina-based refractories can be classified into low-alumina, containing less than 50% Al2O3, and high-alumina or bauxite, containing between 50 and 90% Al2O3. High-alumina refractories have widespread applications in high-temperature metal extraction processes due to their outstanding thermochemical and thermomechanical properties and stability (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Frulli, 2016). The typical chemical composition of refractory-grade bauxite consists of 85–90 wt.% Al2O3, 5–10 wt.% SiO2, 1–2wt.% Fe2O3, 3–4 wt.% TiO2, 0.4–0.8 wt.% CaO + MgO, and 0.20–0.8 wt.% K2O + Na2O (Nyoka et al., 2013). The thermochemical and thermomechanical properties of bauxite-based refractories rely principally on the conversion of the contained silica and alumina to the highly stable corundum (?-Al2O3) and mullite (3Al2O3· 2SiO2) phases (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Hill and Sehnke, 2006; Garbers-Craig, 2008; Frulli, 2016)."

"Sub-standard practices and their adverse impact on safety performance remain a challenge in the South African gold mining industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the root causes of sub-standard practices and the effect on safety performance in South African gold mines. The focus of the study was on the underground production operations at a gold mine in the Free State. The study consisted of three parts: a personal investigation into the causes of sub-standard practices at the mine, a comparison with the results of a cultural study performed at the West Wits mines, and a behavioural survey.The studies described in this article yielded similar results in terms of the key drivers behind sub-standard practices. It was found that substandard practices had a number of causes, and the origin lies within the habits, attitude, and behaviour of employees. Current methods of addressing sub-standard practices and improving safety performance were found to discourage employees from performing work safely and according to procedure. It was concluded that the lack of critical behavioural habits for the given work environment and job title could possibly be the primary reason for the occurrence of sub-standard practices. IntroductionSince the implementation of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996 (Act 29 of 1996) and the Mine Health and Safety Regulations, the South African mining industry has been striving to improve health and safety performance and has placed great emphasis on adherence to mine standards.The Act requires employers in the mining industry to report accidents, incidents, and dangerous situations to the Regional Principal Inspector of Mines in their area. The data provided by employers is captured and analysed by the South African Mines Reportable Accident Statistical System (SAMRASS) and made available for public viewing (Department of Mineral Resources, 2011).A review of the national mine-related accident statistics shows clearly that the South African gold mining industry has improved its safety performance markedly over the past decade, but is still facing major challenges (Figure 1). These include meeting the Mine Health and Safety Milestones (Department of Mineral Resources, 2011)."

A stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motions was used in this study to create a large data base of peak particle velocities measured on stope hangingwalls. A total number of 58 sites located in stopes mining the Carbon Leader Reef, Ventersdorp Contact Reef, Vaal Reef and Basal Reef were monitored. The peak particle velocities were measured at the surface of the excavations to identify the effect of the free surface and the fractures surrounding the underground mining. From the monitoring results obtained, the velocity criterion of 3 m/s will bean adequate value that support systems have to sustain during a rockburst in most cases. However, PPVs in excess of this criterion were recorded, and some PVDs were damaged or irretrieveable, a consequence of which was that possible extreme events were not recorded. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response, defined as the ratio of the measured peak ground velocity to the peak ground velocity inferred from the mine seismic data. The site response measured at all mines studied was found to be 9 ±3 times on average. Values of the site response did not vary significantly with seismological parameters such as peak ground velocity, hypocentral distance and source radius.

One of the seminal pioneering papers in reserve evaluation was published by Danie Krige in 1951. In that paper he introduced the concept of regression techniques in providing better estimates for stope grades and correcting for what later became known as the ‘conditional bias’. In South Africa, the development of this approach led to the phenomenon being dubbed the ‘regression effect’, and regression techniques ultimately formed the basis of simple kriging in Krige’s later papers. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Georges Matheron (1965) formulated the general theory of ‘regionalized variables’ and included copious discussion on what he termed the ‘volume-variance’ effect. Matheron defined mathematically the reason for, and quantification of, the difference in variability between estimated values and the actual unknown values. In 1983, this author published a paper that combined these two philosophies so that the ‘regression effect’ could be quantified before actual mining block values were available. In 1996 and in some earlier presentations, Krige revisited the regression effect in terms of the conditional bias and suggested two measures that might enable a practitioner of geostatistics to assess the ‘efficiency’ of the kriging estimator in any particular case. In this article, we revisit the trail from ‘regression effect’ to ‘kriging efficiency’ in conceptual terms and endeavour to explain exactly what is measured by these parameters and how to use (or abuse) them in practical cases.
