Most structures are designed so that the possibility of failure is eliminated. However, some degree of failure in the rock around deep mine excavations is inevitable if mining operations are continued. The presence of failed rock constitutes a hazard the magnitude of which can be predicted by computer models from calculations of the energy change per unit area mined in stopes, or the field stress around service excavations. Empirical relationships between these calculable quantities and the incidence of rock failures and delays associated with them have been established. Experiments on the computer using different layouts enable the mining engineer to select the least hazardous of otherwise acceptable alternatives, and to predict the incidence of damage ahead of actual mining, so that appropriate measures to maintain an adequate degree of safety and productivity can be planned in advance.

Coal briquetting traditionally makes use of high-dosage, nonpolymeric binders (such as coal tar pitch or molasses) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at low dosages for the binding of fine and ultrafine coal. Due to constraints associated with the manufacturing and cost of PVA-bound briquettes, a novel polyacrylic binder was developed that could possibly be added in low dosages at room temperature. A set of formulations of two polyacrylic components (components A and B) was developed, from which an optimal binder mixture was determined. This formulation comprises 40wt.% component A and 10wt.% component B with a 0.04wt.% cross-linking additive, and the balance water. The uniaxial briquette compressive strength was used to obtain the optimal binder mixture. The binder mixture was added to the coal powder in dosages from 0.1 to 1.2wt.%. Mechanical tests and thermogravimetric analysis in an oxidized environment at a maximum temperature of 930°C were conducted. Binder-bound briquettes were compared to binderless briquettes and PVA-bound briquettes. Briquettes made from the polyacrylic formulation had uniaxial compressive strengths double that of the binderless briquette yield strength, as well as the minimum recommended compressive strength of 0.375 MPa. The organic binders did not affect the combustion of the briquettes, since the results compared well with the binderless briquettes. The polyacrylic formulation is considered to be a possible substitute for PVA in terms of mechanical and thermal properties and raw material cost.

Preconcentration of precious and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, the development and the operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. Ore preconcentration designates an operation consisting of sorting an ore to reduce the quantity of waste material sent to the concentrator. It can be seen as rejecting waste material as much as possible, without compromising the recovery, or as the recovery of as much valuable metal as possible into an optimum mass yield. Benefits of preconcentration are multiple: grinding energy savings, costs reduction, lower environmental footprint, extension of the reserves, etc. However, all of these benefits do not apply simultaneously and are not applicable to each ore type. Technologies employed for preconcentration are highly dependent on ore properties, especially on the particle size at which the gangue is liberated. Thus, from coarser to finer particle sizes, technologies such as screening, ore sorting, gravity separation (Dense Media Separation (DMS) and jigs) and coarse flotation could be used for the rejection of liberated gangue. The difficulty starts when a benchmark is needed to select a suitable technology, especially for low-grade gold deposits. This paper presents the challenges of comparing lab-scale technologies (DMS versus jig) for gold preconcentration. The experimental data will show to what extent comparing two lab-scale gravity technologies for gold preconcentration can be challenging. An attempt to evaluate the energy savings by assessing the hardness of the tailings after gravity separation will also be presented. The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

Corrosion of copper in aerated acidic chloride pickling (0.5 M HCl) solutions and its inhibition by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (ATT) have been investigated using electrochemical techniques and weight-loss measurements, along with Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements for copper after varied immersion periods of 0, 24 and 48h showed that the presence of ATT and the increase of its concentration significantly decrease cathodic, anodic, corrosion (jCorr) currents and corrosion rates (KCorr), as well as the dissolution currents at 300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, while increase polarization resistance (Rp), degree of surface coverage (?) and inhibition efficiency (IE%) to a great extent. Weight-loss measurements after different immersion periods of 6 ~ 48h revealed that the dissolution of copper decreased to a minimum and the corresponding IE% increased with ATT concentration increases. The detection of ATT molecules on the copper surface by Raman spectroscopy indicated that inhibition of copper corrosion is achieved by strong adsorption of ATT molecules onto the copper surface. "Since it was first identified in 1817, selenium has received considerable interest. Native selenium and a few selenium minerals were discovered several decades later. With the increasing number of selenium minerals, the occurrence of selenium minerals became the focus of much research. A great number of selenium deposits were reported all over the world, although few independent selenium deposits were discovered. Selenium is obtained mainly as a byproduct of other metals, and is produced primarily from the anode mud of copper refineries. This paper presents a comprehensive review of selenium minerals, as well as the treatment of copper refinery anode slimes for the recovery of selenium. Our focus is on the selenium minerals, including their discovery and occurrence, and the distribution of selenium resources. In addition, the main methods of recovering selenium from copper anode slimes are summarized. IntroductionSelenium (Se) was first observed in 1817 in a laboratory (Greenwood et al., 1984). The discovery of selenium was made by the Swedish chemist J.J. Berzelius and J.G. Gahn, who isolated selenium from a red residue in sulphuric acid from pyrite mined at Fahlun, Sweden. Selenium was named from the Greek word selene (moon), since it resembled tellurium, which had been discovered a few years earlier and named from the Latin word tellus (Earth).After the first observation of selenium in the laboratory, selenium received considerable interest. In 1954, E.P. Kaiser pointed out that Se is enriched in sulphide ores and often associated with Bi, Co, Sn etc. (Kaiser 1954). In 1959, Hawley and Nichol investigated selenium in Canadian sulphide minerals, and presented the content of selenium in sulphide from several deposits of different types. They also proposed that Se is enriched in lowtemperature hydrothermal pyrite (Hawley and Nichol, 1959). The thermodynamic conditions for forming native selenium and selenium minerals in sedimentary rocks were discussed, as well as geochemical behaviour of selenium near the oxidation zones of sulphides in the 1970s (Howard III, 1977; Zhu et al., 2003). Zhu et al. examined the morphology, features, and genesis of native selenium from Yutangba, Enshi City, Hubei Province, China in 2004, and pointed out, from the different forms of native Se, that selenium can be activated,transformed, remobilized, and enriched at sites such as in the unsaturated subsurface zone or in the saturated zone (Zhu et al., 2005). The transport and deposition of selenium in felsic volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits of the Yukon Territory, Canada was studied and reported by Layton- Matthews et al. (2005)."

(NEt4)[NbOCl3](ttfa)] crystallized in the monoclinic P21/c space group, with a = 11.483 (5), b = 12.563 (5), c = 17.110(5) Å, and ß = 100.838 (5)o. The complex structure exists in a 50.0% (NbA) : 50.0% (NbB) positional disorder ratio.IntroductionComplexes containing organometallic type ß- diketone ligands with O,O and O,N donor atoms are used widely in coordination chemistry and have applications in catalysis, radiopharmaceuticals, etc. (Schutte et al., 2011; Roodt, Visser and Brink, 2011; Brink et al., 2010; Otto et al., 1998). These ligand systems are very useful because of their highly coordinative nature, high solubility, and also due to their ability to be functionalized with various substituents on the carbonyl carbon atoms (Schutte et al., 2011).Only a small number of ß-diketonate ligands have successfully been coordinated to a Nb(V) metal centre, with only a select few being characterized by X-ray crystallography (Viljoen, 2009; Bullen, Mason and Pauling, 1965; Preuss, Lamding and Mueller-Becker, 1994; Funk, 1934; Davies, Leedlam and Jones, 1999; Allen, 2002. The synthesis and crystal structure determination at room temperature of mer-oxidotrichlorido (thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonato- k2O,O’)niobate(V) {(NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)]} was first reported by Daran et al. in 1979. Accordingly, for this current investigation, (NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)] was re-evaluated at 100 K to determine if the structural features might change with temperature."

"In an environment like the mining industry, which is characterized by different stakeholders with multiple objectives, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a useful approach for optimal decision-making. The application of MCDA techniques in the mining industry has predominantly been in mine planning and related problems, although no comprehensive survey has previously been undertaken to establish the application trends. A survey of the use of MCDA techniques was therefore conducted using case studies from the literature. It was noted that often two or more methods are applied to the same problem in order to increase confidence in the solution derived. As the number of criteria and alternatives increases, some methods become inefficient. A combination of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method with other MCDA techniques was the most frequently used approach, indicating the efficiency of the AHP method, especially when evaluating problems with more criteria and fewer alternatives. A combination of fuzzy theory with AHP or other methods incorporates uncertainty. The findings from the survey will benefit users applying MCDA techniques to solve mine planning and related problems.IntroductionA country’s natural resources serve the needs of different groups of people within the country. These different groups are collectively known as stakeholders (Herath and Prato, 2006). Stakeholders have different needs, preferences, and expectations, which describe and define the criteria to be considered in decision-making. The options available as solutions describe the alternatives in decisionmaking theory. The criteria and alternatives have to be evaluated simultaneously when making decisions, and this is when multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques become invaluable (Herath and Prato, 2006) because the human mind is considered to be limited when solving complex and intangible problems with several criteria and alternatives (Saaty, 2007). MCDA techniques belong to a broad group of techniques called multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. The other group of techniques within MCDM comprises the multi-objective decision-making (MODM) techniques. MODM techniques are generally used to solve problems with an infinite number of alternatives, while MCDA techniques are generally used to solve problems with a finite number of alternatives (Musingwini, 2010)."

The objective of this paper is to describe the research followed in creating a generalized, readiness assessment tool for mining projects. We start by highlighting the need for the assessment tool and then progress towards explaining the methodology followed during the study. The selection and finalization of the list of elements, sections, and categories that make up the unweighted values are described, followed by a summary of the weighting process applied. The outcome of this process is a weighted readiness assessment tool for mining project studies. The main benefits of the tool are that it will guide decision-makers and project managers through the definition phases of the project and improve the likelihood of project success.

The Kupol mill facility processed a high grade free milling gold/silver ore containing 28.2 g/t Au, 324.8 g/t Ag and approximately 0.5% pyrite during 2008 operation. Gold predominantly occurs a selectrum in the ore and silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite and proustite. Mill start-up was in mid-May 2008 and the mill reached the design throughput of 3 000 tpd in October. The ore was ground to approximately 70%?53 microns. A Knelson Concentrator recovered 9.8% gold and 0.5% silver. The gravity tails reported to a cyanidation circuit that has 14 hours pretreatment and 116 hours leaching. The slurry from cyanidation was then processed by counter current decantation (CCD) thickening to wash and separate the leach residue from the pregnant leach solution. Precious metals are recovered fromthe pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process. The washed CCD leach residue slurry is treated with calcium hypochlorite to destroy cyanide and then sent to the tailings impoundment. Leaching is performed with a new technology called ?CELP? (CANMET Enhanced Leach Process). The Kupol mill overall gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6% respectively, which were 2.8% and 7.5% higher than targets. Gold and silver extractions in the leach circuit were 94.2% and 84.5% respectively. Leach profiles indicated that gold extraction reached a plateau in the 4th tank while minor silver dissolution occurred in the 5th tank. With the CCD circuit included, total gold and silver extractions increased to 95.4% and 86.6%, respectively. Optimization of the leaching strategy made it possible to reduce sodium cyanide concentration to as low as 410 ppm without compromising precious metals extractions. Silver was effectively leached from the refractory silver minerals because CELP produced more oxidized mineral surface relative to the conventional cyanidation leached mineral surfaces. The average cyanide consumption for 2008 was 1.3 kg/t. The new leaching technology proved to be very robust and performed efficiently even with changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Laboratory experiments produced results that were indicative of plant performance. The robustness of the technology and the laboratory test work contributed to the success of the Kupol mill start-up.

The CSIR-Ti process employs lithiothermic reduction of titanium tetrachloride feedstock to produce titanium sponge. The product is therefore contaminated by a range of lithium and chloride species. In this study we examine the effects of particle size, temperature, and HCl concentration as input leaching variables on the removal of chlorides from the crude titanium sponge. A review of the aqueous chloride chemistry of Li and Ti provided initial conditions for leaching of impurity species from the sponge. Experimental results confirm that the effectiveness of leaching and removal of dissolved impurities from the sponge are dependent on leaching kinetics, which are influenced by temperature, particle size, and morphology. Of the variables tested, reaction temperature had the strongest influence on the oxygen content of the leached product. The HCl lixiviant concentration had a negligible effect under the conditions tested. Leaching of crude titanium sponge (−10 mm size fraction after crushing) at 14°C in either 1 M or 0.032 M HCl yielded a titanium sponge product that met the ASTM standard specification for commercially pure Grade 1 titanium, i.e., oxygen content < 0.18 mass% and chloride content < 0.15 mass%.

More than twenty years ago Sasol, ISCOR, and some parastatals played a major role in ensuring that South Africa had sufficient technical skills. When the economy became tight and business and government were pressurized to decrease costs, the first budgets that were reduced were the training budgets. It seemed to be too expensive and too time-consuming to train apprentices. According to Stacey2, this is a major strategic issue facing the mining industry in South Africa. Two factors added to the shortage of skills challenge: ? Skills erosion and job losses ? Artisans ? currently the economy produces 5 000 but the need is 12 500 ? Level of mechanization in South Africa less than 10 per cent ? Average age of operators and artisans is 50 ? Greater awareness of occupational health effects of hand-held drilling. ? Workplace challenges ? The impact of HIV/AIDS and other employee wellness issues ? Changes and challenges in workplace environment i.e. the mining industry.

At Tapira Mine (Tapira/MG/ Brazil), the largest phosphate concentrate producer in Brazil, the mining is fully mechanized and carried out using open pit mining. This work presents a review of the sampling protocol used for short term mine planning at different stages. Sampling is carried out in two steps. Firstly, diamond drill cores are sampled at 50 x50 x5 metre pattern. Fosfertil analyses grades of P2O5, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, SiO2 and TiO2 plus geological logging. This information feeds the long term block model. Secondly, drill cuttings are collected at the mining faces released for blasting. The drilling pattern is staggered and when blasting is not necessary, a drill hole is made centered in the block area (25 x 25 x 5 m). The primary samples have mass approximately 60 kg and the same chemical parameters are analysed. Metallurgical and mass recovery tests are performed as well. These samples are used to build the short term block model. At the final stage, the short term mine planning model is used to build a stockpile blending model which is simulated using a spreadsheet to match the goals established by the process plant.

High-rate floc-blanket clarification of gold pregnant rotary filtrate was introduced at the Vaal Reefs South gold plant of the Anglo American Corporation during February 1978. A. daily 12 000 to 15 000 t of filtrate, with an average suspended-solids concentration of 350 mg/I, is continuously clarified to a concentration of less than 2S mg/I of suspended solids in a modified plant pachuca (10 m in diameter) at throughput rates of 7,7 to 8,5 ma/m2.h by the addition of 5 g/t of ferric chloride inorganic coagulant and 0,2 g/t of Superfloc NI00 flocculant. The pachuca overflow is then clarified further in seven Stellar candle pressure filters of 54,S m2 surface area to under 5 mg/I of suspended solids. The combined clarification cost when the hopper clarifier is used in conjunction with the Stellar filters is R0,0032 per ton of liquid treated, which is approximately 60 per cent lower than the cost of Stellar filtration on its own. The savings are mainly due to the reduced use of filter pre-coat, the consumption of which has dropped by 70 per cent since the introduction of hopper clarification.

The mining and minerals processing industry is gradually being digitalised to improve efficiency and reduce waste. One aspect of this transition is to ensure that relevant process-data in sufficient quality and quantity is given to the operator in the right format and at the right time to improve decision-making. Augmented reality (AR) can serve as a potential ICT-based support tool for human operators to achieve this goal. With AR, virtual information is combined with the real world in real-time. Therefore, AR technology has the potential to fulfil the need for improved data visualisation in Industry 4.0. This article is the result of a collaborative effort of Chalmers University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University to identify selected state-of-the-art applications of AR that are currently being applied in the mining and minerals industry or selected related industries. This paper aims to show opportunities for the application of AR in the mining and mineral processing industry with selected conceptual applications. This paper concludes with several requirements identified as necessary to implement the conceptual applications of AR in the mining and minerals industry. The aim of this paper was to establish if mineral resource scarcity is a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The project objectives were achieved by investigating economically viable, and critical or strategic minerals remaining in South Africa, as well as resource scarcity, as a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The study found that some minerals in South Africa, such as iron ore, lead, manganese, gold, and cobalt have less than 50 years of economically viable mining remaining. At least 18 minerals can be classified indicatively as critical or strategic: aggregates, bauxite, chromite, cobalt, copper, gold, graphite, iron, limestone, lithium, manganese, nickel, phosphorous, platinum group metals, rare earth elements, silver, titanium, and vanadium. The classification was based on the minerals’ economic importance, supply risk, and potential use in the development and manufacturing of emerging technologies. The findings suggest that the scarcity of mineral resources is a critical driver for the country to transition to a circular economy. Other identified drivers include socio-economic factors, climate change commitments, and business objectives. All minerals are non-renewable resources and at risk of depletion, therefore sustainable extraction and use are critical. Priority should be directed at investigating circular economy opportunities and substitutes for commodities at risk of being depleted within the next 50 years. There is an opportunity for South Africa to transition from a minerals export-based model to one that promotes local mineral beneficiation and manufacturing of end products.

The analysis of angular atypicality of lineaments as an aid to mineral exploration by J. P. G. PRETORI USc, M.Sc. (Pret.) (Visitor) and T. C. PARTRIDGE, Ph.D. (Natal) (Visitor) In an exploration project, data pertaining to 84000 lineaments in an area of 25 000 km2 were recorded. The total length of lineaments in intervals of one degree was determined. Angular intervals with Iow length densities were regarded as atypical. The proportion (by length) of lineaments with such atypical orientation was calculated for 5 km X 5 km grid squares. This index of angular atypicality was contoured and, used in conjunction with conventional photogeological techniques, contributed in a large measure to the success of the investigation.

The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

Electrokinetic dewatering of kimberlite slime under constant direct curents of 0,5 to 2 A and dewatering under constant applied potentia Is of 16,5 to 46,5 V are considered. The combined efects of electrophoresis and the addition of 8,3 x 10-3 M Mg2+ ions on the one hand, and 1 to 10 p.p.m. of the anionic polyacrylamide flocculant Praestol 2935 on the other, were investigated in a 3-litre Perspex electrophoretic cel. .The electro-osmotic dewatering experiments were conducted in a 3-litre Perspex electro-osmotic cel at various electrode spacings, as well as with a moving anode (top electrode). During electrophoretic dewatering, the zeta potential of the kimberlite particles did not change significantly, whereas the pH and temperature showed marked increases with time. The addition of Praestol 2935 enhanced the setling of the sludge bed owing to the additional effect of flocculation. The addition of electrolyte Mg (CIO4)2 retarded the separation process, partly as a result of gel formation in the slurry. During the electro-osmotic experiments, the rate of dewatering was found to be approximately proportional to the applied constant direct current, and to be independent of the electrode spacing. In general, electro-osmotic dewatering seemed to be more energy-efficient than electrophoretic dewatering.
