Ti-64, which accounts for more than 50% of the worldwide titanium tonnage, has found commercial importance in industries requiring components with high specific strength and resistance to corrosion. Investment casting is the preferred production method due to the difficult machinability of the alloy. This study was aimed at investigating the mechanism and the extent of alpha case formation on Ti-64 components cast using the investment casting method with YFSZ (yttria fully-stabilized zirconia) shell moulds after vacuum induction melting. The extent of the reaction between the mould hot face and the molten metal has been studied by varying parameters such as soaking temperature and mould hot face composition, and examining their effects on the reaction with the mould. An increase in the soaking temperature had an effect on the alpha case, both in appearance and hardness, but had no effect on contamination levels by carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. The depth of alpha case increased with soaking temperature, increasing from 35 µm to 161 µm with an increase in temperature from 1200°C to 1400°C. The micro-hardness profiles provided insight into the effect of the alpha case on the mechanical properties of the Ti-64 alloy by displaying hardness values of 1000 HV0.1 and above, but could not be solely utilized to determine the alpha case penetration depth due to microstructural differences in the unaffected Ti-64, in particular the martensitic microstructure that formed with a fast cooling rate from a higher temperature. Levels of expected contaminants such as Zr, Y, 0, and C were low. The addition of the colloidal zirconia binder affected the interfacial reactions. YFSZ proved to be a thermodynamically stable refractory material, with the alpha case possibly forming as a result of segregation.

The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. This precludes the user from having to deal in absolute delay times. The connecting system enables benches to be hooked-up speedily by multiple users who have differing levels of experience. This paper provides details of how, after 33 months, the system has been embraced by the project by aiding in maximised advances, improved cycle times and meeting the required environmental constraints.

"The complete and successful closure of a mine in the South African environment remains problematic. Closure remains an elusive mining phase due to unclear roles and responsibilities, inaccurate closure management data, and the inability of stakeholders to conceptualize and integrate closure information into business processes. Currently there are no proven methods available to address the complexities encountered during a closure application, and to date no mine has been granted full closure. Many mines are left abandoned and unrehabilitated, resulting in risk to investors, surrounding communities, and regulators. This investigation aimed to determine, categorize, and rank reasons for unsuccessful mine closures. Focus groups consisting of public and private stakeholders were identified and surveyed through a structured, rank-order questionnaire to determine the relative importance of reasons why achieving formal and final mine closure remains elusive. Various requirements and aspects were identified and listed according to four categories: namely, primary, secondary, process drivers, and information sources. These aspects should be considered in the development of an integrated mine closure model.Background and rationalePrior to 1956, mine closures were not subject to legislative requirements, being merely governed by insufficient environmental regulations under the Mines and Works Act 27 (MWA) (Swart, 2003). In 1981 the Chamber of Mines (COM) published a document titled ‘The rehabilitation of land disturbed by surface coal mining’, which constituted the first notable contribution to environmental protection. This guideline was later referenced in the Minerals Act of 1991, which for the first time laid definite environmental burdens on the Mining Right Holder (MRH). The Minerals Act of 1991 was superseded by the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act Regulations (MPRDAR), which specify a regulatory process for mine closure applications and financial provisions."

This paper summarizes work carried out on the treatment of fine coal, nominally classified as minus 0,5 mm (wedge-wire screen), which is removed from the raw coal prior to the treatment of the plus 0,5 mm sizes. The minus 0,5 mm coal divides, for treatment purposes, into fines, nominally between 500 and 150 !tm, and ultrafines, nominally minus 150 !tm. Studies on processes for the treatment of minus 0,5 mm coal are discussed, and the lower size limit beneficiated is indicated for each process. The installation and operational results from a pilot froth-flotation plant treating minus 150!tm coal are described.

The treatment of gold-plant tailings with ferrous sulphate to remove the cyanide is currently in use, on several gold plants. In some cases there is scope for optimization the process. The present work provides a detailed study of the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate. Optimal conditions for the removal of total cyande required a ph of 5,.5 to 6,5 and an Fe:CN molar ratio of 0,5. Ferrocyanide ion is shown to be unstable In aqueous acidic solution, with rapid oxidation to ferricyanide, (Fe(CN) 6 ), and formation .of Fe(CN)5H2O3- at pH values below 4, The precipitate from the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate consists mainly 01 Insoluble Prussian blue, Fe4[Fe(CNI&!.3,and IS shown to be unstable in the presence of alkaline solution, since it decomposes rapidly at pH values above 7 to form ferrocyanide, (Fe(CN)6 ), in solution and various insoluble iron oxides,

In this study, we review the role of mechanical activation in the pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical processing of titanium feedstock. Mechanical activation has been shown to decrease the activation energy of chemical reactions, thus enhancing process efficiency and product quality by reducing processing time and energy consumption. Pyrometallurgical processing is energy-intensive and time-consuming. Hydrometallurgy is costly, requires high-grade feed material, and generates toxic waste. Waste generation and process complexity are the major drawbacks of electrometallurgy and solvent extraction. Bioleaching via a mechanically activated pyrometallurgical process can be identified as an alternative method, but the lengthy processing time is the major disadvantage. Mechanically activated titanium concentrate can be used in a finely tuned combined metallurgical process to overcome the challenges and drawbacks in these technologies.

The gas-based CO reduction of Panzhihua vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate from 1100°C- 1250°C was investigated in this paper. The reduction degree increased with increasing temperature and increasing reduction time. At a temperature of 1250°C and a reduction time of 20 minutes, the metallisation degree reached 92%. The iron-titanium oxide phase transformation during reduction process was Fe2.75Ti0.25O5→Fe2.5Ti0.5O4→FeTiO3→FeTi2O5 according to the X-ray diffraction analysis. The SEM and map scan by energy spectrum of results of reduced samples at different temperatures indicated that the metallic iron particle size increased gradually as the reduction temperature increased. Recycling has become an important part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) life cycle due to the growing demand for energy storage in applications like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Recycling spent LIBs provides a secondary source for strategically scarce metals, like lithium and cobalt, helping to reduce the environmental impact of LIBs. Organic acids have been proven to be effective lixiviants with the benefit of reduced environmental impacts, amongst which citric acid has shown to exhibit similar extraction performance when compared to mineral acids. Leaching LCO and NMC batteries with 1.5M citric acid and 2 vol.% H2O2 at 95°C, 20 g/L for 20 minutes achieved 93% Al, 90% Co, 96% Li, 94% Mn and 94% Ni dissolution. The strong chelating property of citric acid affects the separation of the metals, providing unique extraction opportunities. The first extraction uses 12 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH of 2.5 and O/A ratio of 2 to separate 96.4% Mn and 100% Al from the PLS in two counter-current stages. Stripping the loaded organic with 1.25M citric acid at an A/O ratio of 3 allows for up to 91% stripping of the manganese in a single stage. The second extraction then separates 96.5% Li from the PLS in three counter-current stages using 20 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH 5.5 and O/A ratio of 5. In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. Certains aspects de ce projet le rendaient intéressant pour utiliser la modélisation numérique en même temps que d’autres méthodes conventionnelles pour la conception des boucliers. Parmi ces aspects se trouvaient : Les panneaux de la couche 2 devaient être placés environ 25 m au dessous de la couche 4 courte taille ; la couche 4 avait été remplacée par la couche 5 longue taille ; la hauteur de taille proposée pour la couche 2 courte taille était 5.5 m, tandis que la couche 4 avait été exploitée à 4 m. La couche supérieure de la région (couche 5) avait été exploitée entre 1.5 et 2.2 m de hauteur ; il était difficile de prédire les conditions de taille, avec environ 95m de matériaux cassés ajoutant une charge morte à la plaque de séparation entre les couches 2 et 4 et un chargement cyclique causé par des bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau 2-4. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2. The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated. The effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+), and temperature on the extraction were studied. Using 0.1 M Cyanex 923 the extraction of Cu(II) was 6.7 per cent from 3 M HCl, which increased up to 78.5 per cent with 6.5 M HCl and then decreased due to acid extraction by the extractant. The maximum extraction (97.5 per cent) was obtained with 1 M Cyanex 923 from 5 M HCl solution. A mathematical model has been developed to describe solvent extraction equllibria over wide ranges of concentration of extractant, acid, and chloride ions. The composition of the extracted species has been predicted on the basis of slope analysis results and extraction equilibrium modelling. The negative values of enthalpy change and entropy change confirm the exothermic formation of the extracted complex.

The objective of this work was to provide process engineers with values of the physical properties of various slag systems involved in high-temperature processes. Software that calculates the thermo-physical properties of slags from chemical composition is available on the www.pyrometallurgy.co.za website. This paper outlines the principles underlying the various models available in the program. The software calculates the following properties of crystalline, glassy, and liquid slags (where appropriate) as a function of temperature: heat capacity, enthalpy, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and surface tension. We hope, in the future, to update the program to (i) add new models as they become available, (ii) remove any ?bugs? discovered in existing programs, and (iii) provide guidance on the limitations of individual programs.

Compressed air is widely used on South African gold mines. However, due to recent and proposed future electricity tariff increases it is quickly becoming too expensive to produce and use. Boxfront chute systems at ore passes were focused on during this study, and a number of alternative power sources were examined. After comparing primarily costs, and secondarily safety and practicality, of a number of systems based on water and hydraulic oil, a system making use of either air or water was determined to be the most cost effective. A payback time of 8 years was calculated, which will be significantly less taking into account the avoidance of failures due to electricity and water shortages, which would not affect this system due to its ability to swap between either air or water. It was recommended that this system be installed at all boxfront chutes as soon as possible so that the company can begin to benefit from the cost savings.

Ion exchange resins were investigated for the effective recovery of platinum, palladium, and gold from a pregnant cyanide heap leach solution. Screening results indicated that strong-base anion exchange resins proved to be most effective in the recovery of these metal cyanides. Gold was selectively recovered with the use of Minix, while effective recovery of gold, platinum, and palladium over the base metals, copper, and iron, was achieved with Amberlite PWA-5. Successful elution of these metal cyanides was possible from both Minix and Amberlite PWA-5, using a 2M potassium thiocyanate solution at ambient temperature. Acidic thiourea was unable to elute platinum from either Minix or Amberlite PWA-5. Effective elution of palladium and gold were, however, achieved with use of acidic thiourea. Using these results, two conceptual flow diagrams for the recovery of these metals from cyanide solutions are proposed.

Although remote sensing technology has been available for many years, it has rarely been used for monitoring mining activity. Recent studies indicate that remote sensing is also a valuable tool for managing and planning certain aspects of the mining operation. In this paper, we examine areal expansion of marble quarries and the affected vegetation over a period of 10 years in the Mugla region in Turkey, using geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques. Images captured by ASTER Level 3A01 (3D Ortho Data Set), Landsat 5, and Landsat 7 satellites between 2001 and 2009 were used for the analysis. Changes in the natural vegetation as a function of the production level in the marble quarry were calculated using the normalized difference vegetation index. According to the study results, land cover and natural vegetation decreased by less than 3 per cent and 1 per cent respectively between 2001 and 2009, following an upsurge in mining activity in the region.

The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

"The feed ore to Agh-Darreh gold processing plant (Takab City, Iran) contains 2 ppm Au, 7 ppm Ag, and 120 ppm Hg. After cyanide leaching of the feed at pH 10.4, 80% of the total mercury (in the form of cinnabar and metacinnabar) goes to the tailings dam. In this research, separation of mercury from the tailings by flotation was investigated. The effects of collector type and dosage, pH, and the number of cleaner stages were studied. The results showed that after two stages of cleaning a 40–62% recovery of Hg at a grade of 14.3% Hg is attainable. Recycle water from a test in which 50 g/t amyl xanthate and 30 g/t pine oil was used in the flotation stage showed no adverse effect on the leaching and adsorption of gold onto activated carbon.IntroductionMercury, most commonly found in the nature as the mineral cinnabar (HgS), is a hazardous substance because of its mobility and toxicity (Kyle et al., 2012). Roasting is the wellestablished treatment method for mercury ores, in which the sulphur is burned and volatilized and mercury recovered subsequently by cooling and condensation. However, for low-grade ores, flotation is mainly applied for primary concentration due to its comparatively low costs, low environmental hazards, and flexibility regarding feed variations (Bulatovic, 2007). Particularly, cinnabar can be easily recovered by flotation using pine oil and a collector such as xanthate (Bulatovic, 2007; Crozier, 1991). Floatability of cinnabar is reduced due to surface oxidation when it is exposed to the atmosphere after crushing. This problem can be eliminated by adding copper sulphate and lead nitrate or acetate. The best pH for cinnabar flotation is in the range of 6.5 to 8.5 according to Erspamer and Wells, (1954), who reported that cinnabar and stibnite can be floated with long-chain xanthate collectors and an alcohol frother, with cumulative recoveries of 97.8% and 94.7%, respectively. Lead acetate was used as an activator."

How this simple plant generates a large revenue stream. The concept behind the Tailings Scavenging Plant (TSP) is simple: it is a non-complicated modular plant which is designed to be more stable than upstream plants. This, plus the use of ?high energy?, enables the plant to recover any metal missed by the upstream operation. Impala Platinum?Mineral process started pilot plant exercises in June 2003. The pilot plant ran for one year before the capital for the full-scale plant was approved. This year was used to motivate, design and cost a full-scale plant. The metal produced during the pilot and feasibility study enabled this part of the project to run at a small profit. The scale-up to full-scale was relatively simple as the pilot plant had a capacity of 180 m3/hrand the full-scale plant was designed for a capacity of 550 m3/h. The design for the full scale plant was completed in May 2003, with ground breaking taking place on 19 May 2003. The construction phase of the project went well with the commissioning of the first two modules taking place on 22 October 2003. The remaining two modules were commissioned two weeks later. The plant was at full capacity by the 20 November 2003. A review of the plants performance for the first 5 production months is as follows: the plant has required only a few minor modifications and additions, it has run well in excess of 95%availability with no major wear apparent. In addition to this, the plant has produced 3 times the metal forecast.
