The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

Mines of Southern Kuzbass working out, basically, coal formations of flat seams. Seams, as a rule, are inclined to self-ignition. Detection at early stages of the centers of endogenous underground fires has great value for safe conducting mountain works. One of methods of detection of an early stage of underground fires in the worked out space is the method of superficial radon survey. In the report the method is de-scribed and examples of superficial radon survey on concrete layers are given.

This paper discusses system integration and installation of High-Tec systems in underground mines. ABB has the capability to be a System Integrator and co-operates with partners in different areas of technology. Today it is difficult to find one Company that is responsible for the complete Automation System. The design of the system is also dependent on the caving procedure that is currently being used in mines. Most of the engineering must be done during the feasibility study and the design phase. Any mistakes made during these phases will be costly to rectify in the commissioning phase. The paper will also include a presentation of the benefit of using Automation in an Underground Mine, and the importance of integration with the people component. Most of the experience and discussions in this paper are from different technologies that have been developed in Scandinavia and adopted from LKAB in Kiruna. The author of this paper was responsible for the Automation projects in Kiruna Mine during1994 - 1999. The use of remote sensing and geographic information system techniques in mineral exploration is still underutilised. There is a need to explore the potential of new robust remote sensing and geographic information system techniques in the field of mineral exploration. In this study, we mapped the argillic alteration associated with epithermal gold-silver mineralisation. A band ratio of band5/band6 and Crósta technique on Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer within the Google Earth Engine Environment was applied. The bands 5 and 6 were selected for the band ratio after critically analysing and comparing the illite spectral extracted from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer image and the illite spectral obtained from the United States Geological Survey spectral library. The band ratio and Crósta technique identified and mapped the Ovacik goldmine and other argillic alteration zones. Even though both methods mapped out the argillic alteration zones associated with gold-silver mineralisation, the Crósta technique produced the optimal argillic alteration. The study demonstrates the analytical capabilities of Google Earth Engine in image processing and analysis for mineral exploration, such as discovering hydrothermal alteration associated with mineralisation.

Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. The gold dissolution in sulfuric acid media during industrial oxidative leaching test of sulfide gold-copper flotation concentrates has been achieved. The reason for this was using technological water containing thiocyanates and cyanides, which can dissolve gold under these conditions. The carbon in column (CIC) process for gold recovery from these solutions was proposed. However, significant amounts of copper and iron were adsorbed onto the carbon during CIC technology industrial tests. This resulted in a decrease of the gold content in the loaded carbon up to 0.5 kg/t. Further development of the technology was conducted by optimisation of gold and impurities stripping and implementation of carbon reactivation. It was shown, that the copper extraction from the loaded carbon during cyanide treatment was about 95%. The copper content in the stripped carbon after cyanide treatment was 1.76 kg/t. The gold recovery during high-pressure elution by caustic solution was 98%. The hydrochloric acidic treatment with thermal pre-treatment (reactivation) for removing iron and calcium from gold-free carbon was proposed. In this case, the iron and calcium extractions from carbon were 40-45 and 50-55% respectively. These tests showed that for carbon recycling the sequence operations of ‘cyanide treatment, gold elution, thermal pre-treatment, hydrochloric acidic treatment’ can be used. "In the case of feasibility assessments or feasibility studies, an important point of discussion is often how to calculate the capital (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) of a plant. Generally, there is also the request to know how the CAPEX varies when the size of the plant is increased. Nowadays, many databases give an indication of specific equipment costs in relation to the production rate. These data are based on cost information from equipment suppliers and have to be continuously updated by the owner of the database. The approach presented here is a model which allows sizing of process equipment, for example a leach tank, based on process data in combination with the calculation of mechanical properties. Furthermore, it calculates the CAPEX based on construction material cost and adequate machining surcharges. Thus, a single cost model for a leach tank is adequate for both copper and other hydrometallurgical plants and stays valid with changing construction material prices. To summarize, the advantage of this model is the more versatile approach and thus the flexibility due to the inclusion of design aspects, process and mechanical engineering aspects and an updatable database. The database, which is in regard to material cost and is the basis for the cost estimation, is easily updatable from commonly accessible data. This model thus approaches the procedures of an engineering company when designing a plant and executing a cost calculation. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgy nowadays plays an important role in processing of primary and secondary resources. In copper metallurgy, hydrometallurgy accounts for roughly 20 % of worldwide primary production, especially in the case of oxide or low copper-containing ores. Zinc smelters changed their method of production from a pyrometallurgical-dominated concept decades ago to mainly hydrometallurgical routes today. Gold production processes using leaching, especially, have a long history without any development which would not be competitive if not based on hydrometallurgical concepts (Pawlek, 1983; Winnacker-Küchler, 2006)."

In the 21st century, dynamic, accurate digital 3-D geological models are essential to the pursuit of safe, efficient and profitable mining. This is particularly true for the deep-level underground mines in South Africa. The Sirovision® solution is a collaboration project between the Australian CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Datamine Software Ltd. and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (AGA). The purpose of the project is to provide a fully integrated digital rock face imaging, geological mapping and modelling system for the AGA gold mining operations. The CSIRO-developed Sirovision® Stereo Camera Rig (SCR) consists of two digital cameras, alighting system, a laser guidance system and image processing software. The imaging system works on the principles of photogrammetry, i.e. overlaying of two 2-D images with a central focus point, with mathematical algorithms extracting 3-D information from the 2-D image pair. The output from matching several image pairs is a computer-generated, full 3-D, virtual copy of the mining excavation. The image resolution and relief ares of sufficient quality to distinguish different rock types and structural contacts. Functionality within Datamine Studio3 is used to add geological intelligence to the 3-D images provided by Sirovision®. The geologist identifies and ?draws? lines representing geological features directly onto the image. By utilizing the inherent ?topography? of the 3-D image, the software is able to convert the lines into 3-D surfaces, ready for use in the 3-D geological model. Subsequent to promising underground test results from AGA?s Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) in Australia and other mining operations worldwide, it was decided to test the Sirovision® system in the South African deep-level gold mines. The first underground tests at Moab Khotsong Mine began in January 2009. The objectives of these tests entailed the capturing of 3-D images of selected development ends, mapping of geological features onto the 3-D images and integration of the mapping data with the 3-D geological model. Some downsides have cropped up during the feasibility testing, related to practicality of the SCR for acquisition of 3-Dimagery in the deep-level underground operating environment. These constraints will have to be addressed prior to operational implementation. Facing such difficulties is not unusual when attempting to implement new technology in such a challenging working environment and testwork is still in progress at the mine in order to prove the concept of using this technology in a Witwatersrand underground gold mine. The great advantage of the Sirovision® solution is that it offers the geologist the opportunity to work remotely on a 3-D virtual copy of a mining excavation, without the heat, humidity, hazards and time constraints associated with physical mapping in an underground workplace.

"Mill liner wear is a major cost item in the mining industry and there is continuous research to prolong the life of the liners. Over the years it has become apparent that even though high-chromium white cast irons are highly efficient as abrasion-resistant materials, a combination of wear resistance and fracture strength remains difficult to achieve. Increasing the hardness of the high-chrome white cast iron (HCWCI), which improves the resistance to abrasion wear, is often accompanied by a deterioration in fracture strength. Operational conditions inside the mill require that the liner should be made of highly wear-resistant material with some fracture strength. Vanadium additions ranging from 0.2 to 3 wt% were made to HCWCI in an attempt to refine the microstructure. It was found that an increase in vanadium content promotes grain refinement. A content of 1.5-3 wt% gave the best results as measured by the maximum breaking strength.IntroductionOver the years it has become apparent that even though high-chromium white cast irons are highly efficient abrasion-resistant material, a combination of excellent wear resistance and fracture strength remains difficult to achieve. The exceptional wear resistance of highchromium white cast iron (HCWCI) is attributed to hard chromium carbides embedded in an austenitic/martensitic/pearlitic matrix. When the chromium contents exceed 12 wt%, interconnected MC3-type carbides of conventional cast irons are replaced by rodshaped and isolated M7C3 carbides (Powell, 1980), leading to an improvement in the impact toughness, ductility and fatigue resistance. However, the main M7C3 carbides in HCWCI are hard and brittle and can provide an easy path for crack propagation. This limits the applications of HCWCI, particularly in severe impact conditions. Most operations involving HCWCI are in crushing and grinding and the life of a part/liner is limited by its wear resistance. However, improving the wear resistance of HWCI comes at the cost of a significant reduction in fracture strength. Concerns about premature failure of HCWCI mill liners in the mining industries prompted a study to improve the wear resistance and mechanical properties of HCWCI."

To achieve maximum efficiency in any purification stage, the flotation should be continued until the concentrate grade reaches the feed grade. During sampling from rougher cells of the Iranian Sarcheshmeh copper concentrator plant 1, it was revealed that the concentrate grade of the last five cells of rougher circuit was close to feed grade. Therefore, it was suggested that the concentrate of the aforementioned cells be mixed with rougher feed. In this study, one of eight rougher circuit rows was selected and evaluated. The floatability tests were performed to compare the flotation behaviour of rougher feed and mixture of concentrate of the last five cells with rougher feed in the laboratory scale by a tree analysis process. The results showed that mixing of rougher last five cell concentrate with feed has a detrimental effect on flotation efficiency that leads to a 3% decrease in recovery. "In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

The b-solidifying g-TiAl intermetallic alloys of nominal composition Ti-48Al (binary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb (ternary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr (quaternary alloy), and Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr-0.3Si (quinary alloy) (in at.%) were developed. The materials produced were tensile tested at room temperature. The as-cast microstructures and fracture surfaces of the tensile tested specimens were examined using conventional metallographic methods. Microstructural examination indicated that the alloys were comprised of lamellar structures (a2+g) embedded in columnar dendritic cores in the as-cast condition. However, the quinary alloy contained a Ti5Si3 second phase. The alloys exhibited no detectable ductility during tensile deformation, indicating the brittleness of all the materials. The fracture surfaces revealed that the alloys failed by translamellar fracture with correspondingly few cleavage facets.

High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are employed in cement plants worldwide. Although the technology has been mastered in the majority of applications, design-, scale-up- and operationalchallenges still exist today. In addition to modelling throughput, energy requirement and comminution success, the prediction and avoidance of malfunctions is of great importance in current research. The performance of the mill is highly influenced by the roll speed and the fineness of the feed material. Another parameter influencing the composition of mill feed is the circulating load, which is determined by the grinding circuit configuration, the target fineness and the separation efficiency of the classifier. In order to meet this circumstance and simultaneously maintain a reasonable level of material input and testing effort, a complete grinding circuit on a small technical scale was set up in the research centre of Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG. The present study varied the roll speed (0.5-2 m/s) and the proportion of fines in the feed (0-75 %) in order to investigate the influence of both parameters on the finish grinding of a Portland cement with a target fineness of 4000 cm²/g according to Blain. In order to remove heavy metal ions from a large volume of wastewater with a low ion concentration, ion flotation appears to be promisingly effective. In the ion flotation process, because of the high ion removal percentage, the amount of water recovery percentage is a very important factor which determines the process efficiency. However, ion flotation suffers from relatively high collector concentration to achieve the high removal percentage to the desired limit, which subsequently increases the water recovery. In this study, functionalised graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesised, using a chemical method in the ion flotation process, applied as a collector for increasing process efficiency by reducing the collector consumption and water recovery. The high ion removal was achieved with both collectors of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and FGO, while the water recovery with a collector of SDS was 3.4% higher than that with a collector of FGO. The results indicated that the FGO could be effectively used for high ion removal and low water recovery in the ion flotation process. Biooxidation, a biohydrometallurgical process, utilizes a mixed microbial consortium to mediate the dissolution of refractory gold-bearing ores to enhance gold recovery during cyanidation. Recognition of water as a critical resource has prompted improved water management strategies within mining and minerals processing. Bioremediated wastewater from the cyanidation tailings provides a potential water source to supplement the water required for the biooxidation circuit, reducing freshwater extraction. Gold biomining operations have typically been reluctant to recycle this wastewater due to the potential inhibitory effects of cyanide and thiocyanate (SCN-) on the microbial population. Historical process upsets suggest that the microorganisms are sensitive to SCN- concentrations as low as 1 mg/L. However, effective bioremediation processes resulting in effluents with low or negligible SCN- concentrations may allow gold biomining plants the opportunity to recycle available water. Microbial activity as well as alteration in community structure were monitored as a function of increasing SCN- concentration over the range of 0 mg/L to 5 mg/L to investigate the response of the biooxidation community to potential SCN- spikes resulting from upsets in the remediation process. Appropriate microbial growth and ferrous iron oxidation activity with a nominal shift in community structure were observed at SCN- concentrations up to 1 mg/L. Thiocyanate concentrations above 1 mg/L resulted in the complete inhibition of ferrous iron oxidation activity. This was attributed to Leptospirillum ferriphilum’s sensitivity to SCN-. Exposure to a SCN- concentration of 5 mg/L resulted in a lower cell concentration and a significant increase in growth lag time, and the absence of L. ferriphilum from the microbial population. At. caldus and Ap. cupricumulans were still present at 5 mg/L SCN-, although Ap. cupricumulans was unable to oxidise ferrous iron at this SCN- concentration. It was concluded that recycling bioremediated cyanidation tailings wastewater within the biooxidation circuit is feasible; however, to retain process performance, SCN- concentrations should not exceed 1 mg/L. Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1.1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1.4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

Most of the Au and PGM ores in Russia are characterised by a thin mineral impregnation of noble metals in sulfide minerals, and a large variety of mineral forms that lead to high loss of precious metals with fine fractions during flotation. In modern flotation technology, the rational choice of reagents is one of the main trends for selective separation of minerals and effective metals recovery. New data on the selectivity of the thermo-sensitive polymer with specific functional groups (TMPPh) as a flocculant and collector of Au and Pt fine fractions are available. The selective modified collector (DEDTCm) for the recovery of Au and Pt from complex ores is discussed in this paper. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy, UV and IR spectroscopy were applied to study the adsorbed layer of new reagents on the mineral surface. Flotation tests of TMPPh on the gold-bearing ore of the Olimpiada deposit showed an increase in Au extraction and Au content in the concentrate of the rougher flotation. Using a combination of reagents TMPPh and ButX, the quality of the Au and Pt concentrates increased in 1.7 time with an increase in recovery up to 15 % compared with the traditional reagent mode. Testing of TMPPh polymers in flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni ore at Norilsk Nickel has shown the ability to obtain a concentrate with a higher Pt content. Recovery of platinum is 17% higher than recovery in an experiment without polymer. Application of DEDTCm helped to achieve higher technological parameters in flotation of lowgrade Rt-Cu-Ni ore. Compared to the basic mode Pt recovery was plus 13%, Pd recovery was plus 9% and the content of precious metals in the rougher flotation concentrate increased in 2,5 - 4 times. The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. A challenge in mine planning is the optimal allocation of resources to the appropriate workplaces within the shift cycle (labour, equipment type, and other resources) in order to carry out the shift cycle activities, achieve planned production targets, and ultimately maximize production within all infrastructure constraints. Generally, detailed mine planning is done on a monthly basis at a workplace level in order to determine the production targets. The production supervisor, mine overseer, or equivalent production manager must then make the appropriate resource allocation trade-off decisions on a daily basis per shift to try and deliver to the plan and required production target. Due to the complexity and number of permutations of possible resource allocation decisions, it is impossible for a human brain to make the appropriate and optimal allocation decisions that will result in achieving the maximum or target production. These allocation decision permutations must deal with the current status of workplaces (availability, position in the cycle etc.), the status of equipment availability (available, planned maintenance, or breakdown etc.), distance between the workplaces (traveling time of equipment between workplaces, etc.) and equipment type required for that shift cycle activity. All these factors need to be taken into account in resource allocation to plan for the shift, and even during the shift if a major piece of equipment becomes unavailable or a workplace activity is not progressing as planned. This paper is a case study on how an optimization algorithm can be used to create a production planning system for optimization of resource allocation in a mechanized underground platinum operation. A business case for optimal allocation of resources is demonstrated and compared to the current manual planned allocation.
