Dense-medium cyclone tests in 4-and 8-inch-diameter units have shown the ability of cyclones to make sharp separations down to 100 mesh when washing coals of a finer top size than normally fed to dense-medium cyclones. The reduced top size of the feed apparently allows the finer size particles to report to the proper product by reducing the effect of very coarse particles in the congested separation zone of the dense-medium cyclone.

This paper discusses the fact that US coal mining organisations are losing the knowledge they need in order to be able to respond to emergencies. The authors note that knowledge management provides a useful perspective from which to view the problem, but that the debate about what constitutes knowledge should be broadened to include a debate about what constitutes management. It is argued here that knowledge is actually shared knowing distributed across group members; that such knowledge can be managed by cultivating it; and that narrative is the medium through which this may be done. The paper then examines NIOSH research that has attempted to use such an alternative knowledge management approach to help potential mine emergency responders better deal with the predicaments they are likely to encounter on-site.

The Bureau of Mines performed a pilot study examining the effects of posture on back strength and Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL) on six healthy male subjects (M = 32 years + 4 SD). Six hack strength measurements (3 static and 3 dynamic) were made while the subjects were kneeling and standing. In addition, these subjects (who were unaccustomed to lifting in these postures) volunteered to participate in a study of psychophysically determined NAWL in both postures. Results of the back strength tests showed a significantly lower peak torque per body weight output in kneeling versus standing hack strength measurements for five out of six test comparisons (p < .05). Subjective estimates of lifting capacity in the kneeling posture were significantly lower than those for the stooped posture (p < .05). Fire experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, with coal, diesel-fuel, electrical-cable, conveyor-belt, and metal-cutting fire sources to determine the response of fire sensors to products-of-combustion (POC). Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and smoke fire sensors demonstrated an earlier fire detection capability than a CO sensor. This capability was of particular significance for a conveyor-belt fire in which the optical visibility was reduced to 1.52 m with an increase in CO of less than 2 ppm at a distance of 148 m from the fire. Application of a neural-network program to the sensor responses from each type of fire source resulted in correct classifications of coal, diesel-fuel, cable, belt, and metal-cutting combustion with a mean of 96% of the test data correctly classified.

Safety and health professionals from all sectors of industry recognize that training is a critical element of an effective safety and health program. A major concern in the mining industry today is how to train the present aging workforce plus the expected influx of new and less experienced miners and mine operators as the cohort of older workers retire. This paper defines the problem, offers a model to structure the inquiry, and presents the key issues a multi-disciplinary team of NIOSH researchers identified, based on an extensive review of the current literature in relevant areas. Issues include differences between cohorts, such as the newer workers (Generation M), and present workers (Boomers) with respect to their physical, social, psychological, and cultural characteristics, their learning styles and work expectations. Specific issues for an aging workforce are discussed. Some preliminary recommendations are offered on the type of training needed.

Electrophoretic mobility measurements were made on samples of Florida phosphate slimes to determine the optimum conditions of coagulation and precipitation in aluminum sulfate solutions. The addition of silica sand and other selected materials as mutual coagulants has demonstrated the practicability of coagulating two dissimilar particle systems by elimination of the repulsive double layers. By proper selection of the solution and its concentration, the reduction of the double layer to a zero point of charge causes coagulation and rapid precipitation of both particle systems. Confirmation was found in filtration tests and sedimentation tests.

It is the purpose of this paper to review theoretical model concepts in through- the -earth transmission of electromagnetic waves. While the subject is very broad in its defined scope, we will be conscious of the specific applications to mine rescue and emergency telecommunications in coal mine environments. The plan of the paper is to outline previous theoretical efforts without attempting to attach names or organizations to the specific developments. However, we include a guide to the literature as an appendix. Without pretending to be entirely impartial we include a critique of the limitations of the available analytical models. As I see it the central problem is to calculate the steady state mutual impedance of a four-terminal network that is the black box characterizing the through-the-earth path. Problems of secondary importance include the determination of the input impedances of the two pairs of terminals and the associated transient responses. [ ]

Although early Spanish settlers used coal several centuries ago, significant commercial coal mining in New Mexico began in 1861, when the U.S. Army opened a mine to supply Fort Craig. Since then, coal from the state has been used to fuel railroads, lead and copper smelters, and other local industry. In recent years, lower-cost strip mining methods and an increased demand for coal by electric utilities in the Southwest have caused an increase in New Mexico coal production. The coal-bearing regions of New Mexico underlie about 25,000 square miles or20.6 percent of the total area of the state. However, the majority of coal-bearing regions lie under Indian lands that are regulated by the Office of Surface Mining (see Navajo and Hopi data on pages 72-75). Today, most of the coal produced in New Mexico comes from the San Juan Basin in the northwest part of the state and the Raton Area in the north central part. New Mexico&apos;s reserves are estimated to be 4.6 billion tons, about one percent of the national reserve. New Mexico&apos;s permanent regulatory program was conditionally approved December 3 1, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved July 17,198 1.

A series of alloys was laboratory prepared by adding up to 4 weight-percent cobalt to the basic composition of type AM 350 (AISI 633) stainless steel. Aging curves were established for each alloy at 750° F, 850° F, and 950° F for lengths of time up to 100 hours. A series of annealed steels containing as much as 1 weight-percent cobalt was cold-rolled 50 percent and aged for 3 hours at 850° F. No improvement in hardness due to cobalt was observed in the steels transformed by heat treatment. Slight improvements in hardness were observed in the steels transformed by cold working.

Are you afraid of the dark? Of course not, at least not since you were about six years old, anyway. But early man was - afraid of the dark, and he had good reason to be. Since he had no illumination other than fire and moonlight, he was at a disadvantage when it came to mixing it up with some of his fellow creatures. Sabre-toothed tigers, for example, could probably see quite well In the dark, and they were very real enemies. Sabre-toothed tigers haven&apos;t been seen in mining country for some time now; but it&apos;s st111 dark In a mine and, make no mistake about it, there are still enemies in the dark. The enemies are all the things that can injure you if they are not seen. Modern mines can be safe places to work for the trained miner who follows good work practices. But there are mining machines that make sabre- toothed tigers look like pussycats, and if you can&apos;t see well enough they can be ten times more dangerous.

Underhand cut and fill mining methods are used at the Lucky Friday, Stillwater, and Galena mines in the western US in an effort to safely mine in difficult ground conditions and as a primary mining method where access below the ore is limited. The method has evolved at each mine to meet the unique situations associated with their milling procedure and mine layout. Details of the operational aspects of the backfilling and mining cycles at each mine are presented in this paper, accompanied by a summary of the mechanical properties of the backfill and its in-situ geomechanical behavior.

C. 7 Emergency Rescue Hoists There is a need, especially in mine development areas, for portable, on-call, man-rated equipment capable of lifting men through several hundred feet. Wire rope climbing equipment as shown in Figure 37 appears particularly suited to this need. It is portable, weighing approximately 100 lbs. , is currently man-rated for numerous above ground applications and can be electric or air powered. Commercial units currently have a lifting capacity of 1000 lbs. , and can be fitted with bosun&apos; s chairs. Lifting speeds are in the 20-30 FPM range and the equipment is not depth limited. In a situation where miners are unable to climb to the top of a shaft this equipment could rapidly be anchored to the top of the shaft and lowered to them by hand. Since the self contained unit is controlled by the person travelling in the shaft he would be able to negotiate shaft obstruction himself. This would not be possible with other forms of easily deployed free-hanging equipment. Often a collection of analytical data, which should reasonably be expected to follow the normal distribution, contains too many extreme values, which the experimenter is inclined to eliminate according to some arbitrary procedure. The stepwise computer procedure described for this purpose is similar to many other truncation procedures; however, because truncation of a basically normal distribution causes a downward bias in the estimated variance, this procedure provides a graphical method to compensate for the bias.

Growing concern from labor unions, regulatory agencies, and industry about the safety of a prevalent underground coal mining method which utilizes remote control has prompted human factors field evaluation of mining activities. Remote control operations were implemented with little consideration given to human-system interactions. Ideally, collecting and analyzing information prior to implementing new technology would have helped to address potential problems. One such problem that operators and other mine personnel are faced with is the question of where they should safely position themselves to avoid injury while remotely operating machinery. To determine work methods employed by machine operators before and after implementation of the new method, work sampling techniques have been used to provide data about positioning of face crew members at different points in the mining cycle. This data provides information for optimal positioning, leading to safer operating procedures and identifying training shortfalls.

For the first time in an underground stone mine, the relationship between roof movement and microseismic emissions was examined in conjunction with two distinct roof fall areas. As roof monitoring increases in acceptance and monitoring technology advances, the goal of providing reliable roof fall detection systems to enhance the safety of underground mine workers moves closer to reality. Instrumental to reaching that goal is the ability to interpret accurately and completely roof movement and microseismic emissions, which can serve as precursors to roof falls. This paper examines the capabilities of convergence and microseismic monitoring systems to better understand roof rock failure mechanics and to anticipate roof falls. An understanding of how these techniques are used and how they interact with each other is critical in developing the most effective ground control strategy for our nation’s mines.

Enthalpies above 298° K were investigated for four crystalline sodium borates by copper-block drop calorimetry. Determinations were made to 1,200° K for NaB02, 1,003° K for Na2B407, 1,005° K for NaB305, and 1,046° K for Na2Be013. No phase transitions or other thermal anomalies were found. The enthalpy determinations, when combined with known heats of formation at 298° K and other supplementary data, enabled the calculation of the heats and free energies of formation of the compounds to their melting points. Values of relative enthalpies, entropies, heat capacities, free energy functions, enthalpies of formation, free energies of formation, and equilibrium constants of formation were tabulated at even temperatures.

Coal-bearing beds underlie 23,000 square miles, about one third of Missouri&apos;s total area. Twelve out of more than twenty named coal seams have been or are being commercially mined. The remainder are too thin for commercial production. The coal is high volatile bituminous, with reserves estimated to be six billion tons, 1.24percent of U.S. coal reserves. Coal-bearing strata are generally thin seams which can be up to five feet thick. Typically, mined seams are about 28 inches thick. Coal deposits were first mined in Missouri in the 1840s, with the coal used primarily for domestic heating and blacksmithing. Production increased with the introduction of steamboats on the Mississippi. Coal production in 19 17 was six million tons. Production has steadily declined from a high of nearly seven million tons in 1984 to 2.3 million tons in 1991. Declining production is the result of several factors, including competition from other energy sources and the high sulfur content of Missouri coal. Today, coal-fired electric generating plants are the biggest consumers of Missouri coal. The Missouri regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, and fully approved January 17,1983. Its Abandoned Mine Land program was approved January 29, 1982.

Splicing portable trailing cables used in underground coal mines is usually less expensive in terms of capital outlay and production time lost than replacing them. However, handling trailing cables may result in electrical arcs, shocks , and burns. Also, destructive forces encountered during a mining operation may shorten the effective life of a cable splice. This report gives the results of an analysis of cable splice defects in an effort to establish cable splice performance criteria, determine testing standards for cable splices, establish guidelines for training programs in cable splicing, and indicate areas for improvement.

Improving the air quality in metal/nonmetal mines is important in protecting the health of miners. Air quality can be improved in metal/nonmetal mines by developing proper ventilation techniques. Mine ventilation systems require stoppings to direct the airflow and establish pressure differentials throughout the mine. Due to their large size, stoppings in large-opening mines are cumbersome and costly to construct and maintain. As part of its mining health and safety program, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested two novel stoppings (Super Stopping and the EZ-Up Curtain Stopping) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). The Super Stopping is designed as a long-term permanent stopping for use in the main entries of the mine, while the EZ-Up Curtain Stopping, although very durable, is designed more for portability and ease of installation. This paper describes the design, materials, and construction methods used for these stoppings as well as their performance and durability when subjected to tests simulating actual production face blast pressures.
