4. Preliminary Study - Remote Seal Checker 4.1 Introduction Determination of the completeness of each individual seal at the time of its emplacement is essential for an effective remote sealing system. A satisfactory seal checking technique should provide a signal which: (1) indicates percentage completion as the seal is emplaced (2) provides a definite indication of a complete seal (3) indicates the size of the unsealed area if a complete seal is not feasible This information is required to establish the need for additional seal material, the need for additional seals, and the risk likely involved in entering the mine., In many situations it is as important to know the quality of a seal as it is to build an effective one. It is likely that with repeated use the remote sealing technique developed by Foster-Miller Associates will be sufficiently reliable and predictable to preclude the seal checking requirement. It is recommended, however, that each seal be checked during construction to insure its completeness and increase the level of confidence so necessary in reopening the mine. 4.2 Description of General Problem Several characteristics of remote mine seals are important in considering techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of these seals. The advancement of high-temperature drilling fluid technology for application in geothermal environments is part of the Bureau of Mines program for more efficient development of our Nation's energy resources. The bentonite constituent of water-base drilling fluids is sensitive to destabilization by high-temperature and salinity. A substitute material for bentonite, phosphate slime, which is reported to be saline resistant, was considered. These studies show that spray-dried slime suspensions have more favorable rheological behavior, but poorer filtration properties, as compared with bentonite suspensions.

The possibility of improving the volatilization of gold through the formation of a metal-gold chloride vapor complex was investigated. Gold-silica mixtures, containing ferrous and nonferrous minerals and salts as additives, were treated in a laboratory tube furnace with a flow of chlorine gas at various temperatures. The addition of pyrite (FeS2) to a charge of gold-silica increased the volatility of the gold from 3, 20, and 62 percent of the total gold to 62, 93, and 100 percent at 200°, 300°, and 400° C, respectively. Chemical analyses of the condensate indicated the volatile species to be FeAuCl6.

Approach Replace the flexible-cable or chain-type lower ladder steps, with steps that extend closer to the ground and do not sway when stepped on. Modify dimensions of entire ladder to new industry recommendations. How It Works New lower ladder steps are supported by side pieces made of pretensioned, solid-wound, coil springs fabricated from high strength steel. Unlike conventional crash-resistant steps, which flex or swing freely when stepped on, the spring supported steps can maintain the same inclination as the fixed upper portion of the ladder while supporting an average-weight operator. Bowie Resources maintains one of the most pro-active ground control programs in the U.S. mining industry today. Its guiding philosophy is that everyone in the organization, from the miners at the face all the way through the top management, are involved in ground control. Some of the unique elements of the Bowie ground control program include: • Roof bolt operators log the stratigraphy of test holes in nearly every cut. These “lith-graphs” are used by section foremen to determine the need for additional roof support, and they are entered into the geologic data base for use in geologic modeling and mapping. • Underground core drilling is conducted to obtain data for CMRR and stability maps. • Weekly “Quality” meetings, involving mine management and technical staff, are held to ensure that ground control information is integrated into production operations. The paper will describe the program in detail, discussing the involvement of roof bolters, section foremen, surveyors, technical staff, and production managers. It will also show how the program has contributed to the mine planning process. Case histories of successful ground control interventions will be discussed.

This chapter presents MSHA data on mine employment and active mining operations during 1986-1995. Figures 3-1 through 3-10 show, for each commodity, the location of mine operations in 1995, and employee hours and active mining operations by year during 1986-1995 for mine operators. For coal and nonmetal operators, the number of active mining operations and the number of employee hours decreased over the 10-year period. For metal operators, the number of active operations decreased, while the number of employee hours increased. For stone and sand and gravel operators, the number of active operations and the number of employee hours remained about the same. Figures 3-11 and 3-12 show that over the 10-year period, there was an increase in the proportion of hours worked by contractors in coal mining, while the overall employment decreased. For metal, nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel combined, the proportion of contractor hours increased, with overall employment also increasing. Table 3-1 shows the distribution of hours worked during 1986-1995 by commodity and type of operation. For coal, the majority of hours worked were in underground mines. For metal, nonmetal, and stone, the largest number of hours worked were in mills and preparation plants. For sand and gravel, all work hours other than office were in surface mines. [ ]

Beginning in 1991, scientists at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory recorded interviews with individuals who are recognized as experts in mine emergency response. These 30 veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years of mining experience. Interviewees included representatives from mining companies, the United Mine Workers of America, and State and Federal agencies. Most of their comments dealt not so much with technical aspects of particular mine emergency responses, but rather the human side of more general topics, including preparedness, experience, people on-site, mine rescue teams, and decision-making. An analysis of their interviews provides an overview of lessons learned on-site at some of the largest mine disasters since the mid-1940s. This knowledge was gathered so that it could be provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is expected that the collective wisdom obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions that will have to be made on the scenes of future events.

Experimental work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that when a coalbed is degassed by boreholes, the flow of methane may actually increase with time. This phenomenon appears to be the result of a relative-permeability effect; that is, the coalbed permeability to the gas increases sharply with decreasing water saturation. This report reviews the background of experimental evidence indicating a relative-permeability effect, and presents the results of a computer simulation of two-phase flow in coal.

An ideal fire warning alarm system for underground mines would be low cost, convenient, fast, reliable, and able to warn all underground workers. Present warning systems, such as phones, messengers, and stench, fail one or more of these criteria. The U.S. Bureau of Mines may have devised the ideal system. The one way communication system employs a large loop antenna and transmitter to create a 630 hertz (Hz) electromagnetic field to send information through-the-earth to cap lamp battery mounted micro- receivers worn by underground miners. Field tests of prototype equipment in 1986 resulted in through-the- rock signal transmission of over 762 m (2500 ft). Subsequent hardware upgrades for more recent tests resulted in transmissions of over one mile. Recently developed receiver circuitry employs phase- locked-loop detection circuitry responsive only to a specific series of pulses of given time duration, that eliminates false alarms from electromagnetic noise emitted by mine equipment, power lines, or lightning. Crude shale oil produced by gas combustion retorting of Green River oil shale was hydrocracked over a cobalt molybdate catalyst at operating pressures of 500, 1,000, 1,500, and 3,000 psig, an operating temperature of 8900 F, and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0. Hydrogen feed rate was maintained at 6,000 scf/bbl. The volume-percent yields of total liquid product were directly proportional to the operating pressure. Weight-percent conversion and volume-percent yields of gasoline were directly proportional to the log of the operating pressure. Catalyst deposit percentages were inversely proportional to the log of the operating pressure. Nitrogen and sulfur removal rates as well as saturation of the liquid products increased as the operating pressure was increased.

An investigation of the feasibility of shielding low-voltage trailing cables in underground coal mines is described. Both laboratory and under¬ground installation results are presented. The main objective of shielding is to reduce the electrical shock hazard; however, several problems will be encountered by mine operators who install shielded cables. Parameters related to such items as purchasing, splicing, troubleshooting, safety, and reliability are discussed. Some of these problems can be minimized by changes in cable constructions and shuttle-car reeling-device components. Both SH-C and SH-D constructions are considered.

To rapidly and dependably locate shorts and opens in mining equipment power cables. Approach: The approximate locations of faults are found using a sound pulse echo, then the faults are exactly located with one of two probes. How It Works: To approximately locate u fault in shielded or unshielded cable, the cable is disconnected from the mine power center, and connected to the sound pulse generator. The generator is also connected to the ground conductor of the cable. When the generator is energized, electrical pulses are transmitted, and each moves along the conductor until it reaches a fault. When a pulse reaches the fault an echo returns to the instrument, either a positive pulse if the fault is an open, or a negative pulse if the fault is a short. See Figure 1. The further along the cable the first fault is from the instrument, the longer it takes for the echo to return. The instrument automatically measures the time and calculates the distance. The distance in feet is shown on an illuminated digital display.

The United States is more than 90 pct dependent on imported bauxite a source for aluminum, but it has vast nonbauxitic aluminum resources, such as kaolinite, anorthosite, alunite, etc. As part of a program to devise processes for treating these resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a bench-scale leaching process using hydrochloric acid (HC1) and fluoride to extract aluminum from Wyoming anorthosite. HC1 and fluoride-to-aluminum (F/Al) mole ratios were studied with respect to aluminum extraction for single-stage, cocurrent, and countercurrent leaching modes. Using 95 pct stoichiometric HC1 and a F/Al mole ratio of 0.27, 90 pct of the aluminum was extracted by countercurrent leaching. Single-stage leaching with the same amount of acid and fluoride extracted 48 pct of the aluminum. Three fluoride sources, CaF2, Na2SiF6, and H2SiF6, were used and gave similar results on aluminum extractions.

Reduce respirable dust in coal preparation plants. Approach Survey a representative sample of coal preparation plants to (1) determine the dust problem extent, and (2) evaluate practical dust control techniques. Coal Preparation Plant Survey Results Of the approximately 500 coal preparation plants in the United States, 18 plants in six States were randomly selected for survey. The raw hourly capacities ranged from 250 to 1,250 tons, plant construction dates ranged from 1037 to 1982, and usually 3 to 10 workers were required per shift. Respirable dust concentrations within the plants surveyed ranged from very good (less than 1 mg/m') to very poor (14 mg/m3). No relationship was found between dust concentration and age or capacity of the plant. Six of the plants had long-term respirable dust concentrations between 7 and 14 mg/m' in specific areas; six had concentrations between 2.2 and 6.2 mg/m'. Except fur ventilation, only 4 of the 18 plants used operating dust control devices with mixed effectiveness.

2, Survey of Representative Group of Metal and Non-mental Mines Before proceeding to develop and analyze Emergency Escape System Guidelines, it was necessary to obtain a broad range of information, including both fact and opinion. Although there were many areas to consider, the surveys had three primary goals 1. To determine the current state of underground escapeway planning and execution in American, metal and non-metal mines. 2. To determine, for a wide range of mining conditions, what difficulties can be encountered in complying with present and proposed escapeway regulatory standards. 3. To determine what improvements could be made and what equipment and technology was available to aid in implementing these improvements. To accomplish these goals, three major surveys were undertaken¬ 1. Survey of MESA and State Mining officials, discussed in Section 2. 1. 2. Survey of representative U S metal and non-metal mines, discussed in Section 2. 2. 3. Survey of manufacturers supplying equipment, primarily hoisting, suitable for use in escape systems, the product information which was obtained is discussed in Section 7.

Metal production rates of 42 to 45 tons per day were obtained with hollow-core anthracite briquets in an experimental blast furnace. Tuyere pressures were about the same for both coke and briquet operations, but from 150 to 175 pounds more of briquets were required per ton of metal than were needed with coke. Furnace operations were comparatively smooth, furnace hanging occurring less often than in previous tests with anthracite briquets. Dust production was substantially higher than with coke, however, and metal quality could not be controlled by corrective burdening and moisture control.

Improve the safety of mine workers by developing a means of forecasting impending roof falls in underground mines. Approach The Bureau of Mines, through in-house and contract research, has developed the Roof Fall Warning Device. This battery-operated, portable electronic system forecasts roof falls by detecting and interpreting high-frequency rock noise, The technology has shown potential for detecting stress-related failures in a variety of underground environments. How It Works All geologic materials produce high-frequency acoustic emissions when they encounter an increase in stress. These ultrasonic frequency range events ( >20kHz) are well above the audible range of human hearing, very small in amplitude and duration, and can only be detected with sophisticated electronic equipment.
