ANFO blasting agents may undergo an exothermic reaction when they contact warm ore bodies that contain pyrite and its weathering products. The reaction is very fast at temperatures above 80° C. Urea, when present in sufficient amounts, inhibits this reaction at temperatures below 180° C. But urea-ammonium nitrate mixtures are very hygroscopic and, in certain climates, may be difficult to handle in the field. Reaction-inhibiting characteristics of three compounds were reported by the Bureau of Mines in 1979. Recently, the Bureau investigated the reaction-inhibiting qualities of five additional compounds. Mixtures of ANFO, pyrite, weathering product, and prospective inhibitors were slowly heated, under conditions simulating a hot borehole, to determine prospective inhibitor capability at temperatures up to ~175° C. Small-scale thermal tests of the same mixtures were used for verification and clarification of results. Two organic compounds, phthalimide and xanthine, similar in structure to urea, failed to inhibit the reaction. Zinc oxide and calcium carbonate were found inferior to urea, though zinc oxide raised the onset of reaction from 80° C to about 140° C. Only magnesium oxide was found to be similar to urea in its inhibitory ability at temperatures below 175° C. Based on results from analysis of quenched residues, the use of more than 5 wt-pct magnesium oxide is recommended.

The Bureau of Mines as part of its research effort to minimize the generation of hydrometallurgical waste, investigated a sodium sulfide leaching-electrolysis procedure for treating hydrometallurgical residues for elemental sulfur and base-metals recovery. Research was conducted on a leaching residue from a lead concentrate. The following procedure was developed. 1. The elemental sulfur was dissolved as polysulfide with an Na2S solution. 2. The resultant metal sulfide bearing residue was oxidatively acid leached in a cationic membrane electrolysis cell; the metals were solu¬bilized at the anode, and a base was generated at the cathode. 3. The elemental sulfur was recovered from the polysulfide solution by neutralizing with the acid in the anolyte. Byproducts of the neutralization were H2S and a sodium salt solution. 4. Sodium sulfide was regenerated by reacting the H2S byproduct with the base in the catholyte. 5. Lead as PbCL2 was recovered from the anode residue by brine leaching, and the other metals were recovered from the sodium salt solution as metal sulfides. 6. The barren filtrate from the metal sulfide precipitation constituted the recycled electrolyte. Ninety-eight percent of the elemental sulfur, 98 pct of the lead, and up to 80 pct of other accessory metals were recovered from a residue obtained from the FeCl3-NaCl leaching of a lead concentrate.

Dust surveys were conducted around small truck-mounted rock drills operating at surface coal mines to assess their airborne respirable dust generation and in-service dust control methods. Of four out of seven drills sampled, respirable dust concentrations measured around the drill deck ranged from 8.68 to 95.15 mg/m with3concentrations ranging from 1.37 to 2.69 mg/m at distances 12.2 to 30.5 m downwind of these drills. The other3drills had noticeably lower respirable dust concentrations measured around the drill deck at or below 1.30 mg/m.3Rotoclone-type dry dust collectors were commonly used with dust being emitted from around the drill deck shroud, collector exhaust, and collector fines dumping. Wind speed and direction was also a factor in the dust concentrations measured on the bench. Dust control modifications were made to three rock drills to reduce their airborne dust emissions. Dust controls tested included water injection into the Rotoclone exhaust, Rotoclone exhaust extension, improved sealing of drilling deck shroud, shrouding the Rotoclone hopper dump process, and wet drilling. These control techniques showed noticeable improvement in dust concentrations measured around the drills. Finally, repositioning the drill operator showed that operator dust exposure can be improved by avoiding the dust cloud around the drill.

"Introduction.The third annual mine-rescue maneuvers of the Globe-Miami District First Aid and Mine Rescue Association were held at Globe, Ariz., on November 5 and 6, 1923. The first demonstration was held in October 1922, and the results** from that experiment, both in the practical training and the interest aroused in the apparatus men, were so much more satisfactory than those from the ordinary smoke-chamber training, that Orr Woodburn, director of the Association, decided to hold similar maneuvers at frequent intervals. The second test was held on March 21-22, 1923, in connection with the meeting of the Southwest Mining Section of the National Safety Council at Globe.Place and Organization.The recent maneuvers were held in the same mine and conducted in the same general manner as the first, and the points of interest not brought out previously are described below. By studying the accompanying map the movement of the teams can be better understood.Thirty-three apparatus men were out on the first day and thirty-two on the second day, a total of forty-three men being trained.Mr. Woodburn was aided in directing the work by his two assistants from the mine-rescue station, two local safety engineers, and an engineer from the Bureau of Mines. Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coalbed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc. 's No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala. , where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (3083) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x lo6 ft3 (1.1 x lo6 m3 ). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pct. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

1. Mine drainage constitutes surface or ground water which flows from mines or mine sites and is usually characterized by concentrations of acidity or alkalinity. 2. The regional geology controlling the ground water flow pattern in conjunction with the life cycle mining plan can serve as a basis for making decisions about quality of water that can be expected to be encountered. 3. In regard to the prevention and control of acid water formation in underground coal mines, much is left undone in research and education: (A) Very little literature is available on this specific subject although much has been written on water management in underground mines. (B) Little or nothing is contained in the text books and curricula used in mining departments at colleges and universities with the result that educational offerings may be seriously deficient in these areas. 4. Prohibiting water entry into underground coal mines is the best method of preventing water pollution. Since this is not possible as mining operations are extended, preventing water or oxygen from contacting acid producing material may offer the next best alternative. 5. More emphasis is needed during the mine planning stage on steps to prevent water pollution. Such life cycle considerations as type of mining, sequence of development and spatial configuration as well as the elements of the drainage network and final network organization and extent must be considered.

A construction material based on plasticized sulfur and mineral aggregate, that is superior in corrosion resistance and strength to portland cement concrete. The material can be used in the chemical, metallurgical, and fertilizer industries, and will also provide an attractive market for by-product sulfur resulting from compliance with pollution regulations. How It Is Made Sulfur concrete is thermoplastic material. Plasticized sulfur is mixed with sand and gravel aggregate heated to 375-400° F. The sulfur melts and acts as the binder or cement. The sulfur concrete is poured hot and sets at a temperature of 200° F. Full strength is attained in a few hours, compared to several days for portland cement concretes. Sulfur concrete even pours and sets in freezing weather. Although unmodified sulfur with aggregate will produce a sulfur concrete with good initial properties, it undergoes crystallographic modifications, and deteriorates with time, particularly when exposed to moisture or freeze-thaw conditions. The Bureau of Mines has developed plasticizers which, when reacted with the sulfur, give sulfur concretes with excellent moisture and freeze-thaw resistance. The plasticizers are based on mixtures of dicyclopentadlene (DCPD) and ollgomers of cyclopentadiene. About 5 percent by weight of the plasticizers is reacted with molten sui fur for several hours. The sulfur cement can be used directly or allowed to solidify for easier handling and storage.

Provide coal mine shafts/slopes with an optimum coal mine shaft fire and smoke protection system composed of reasonably-priced, reliable hardware. Approach Accident and injury data indicate that a relatively low percentage (5%) of underground coal mine fires occur in shafts or slopes. Nevertheless, shaft or slope fires are extremely serious because they block critical escape routes for miners. That also can happen when combustion products resulting from fires in other mine areas contaminate shahs and slopes. Seeking the optimum configuration for a shaft/slope fire and smoke protection systems, the Bureau of Mines gathered data on the performance of existing fire detection devices and signal telemetry systems In several mines, and analyzed the generic protection needs of the U.S. underground coal mining industry. The optimum system developed by the Bureau provided an adequate number of detectors, a wide area of coverage, and an extensive data acquisition, analysis, display, and storage capability. This system. recommended for fabrication and in-mine testing, consisted of a microcomputer-controlled master panel located in the test mine's slope hoist room, and four remote units. Two of the remote units were placed on the surface atop upcast ventilation shafts, a third was situated underground near the slope bottom, and a fourth was installed at the slope top in intake air.

In this Bureau of Mines report, time-resolved infrared emission spectra and corresponding pressure and temperature histories are reported for large-scale propagations of CH4-air, CH4-air-N2, and CH4-air-CF3Br ignitions in a 12-ft-diam sphere. Absolute spectral radiances were obtained throughout combustion over the 1.6- to 4.8-gym range, and the radiance growth patterns for the H20 (2.5-µm) bands are presented as a function of methane stoichiometry and diluent concentration. Flame temperatures were determined from the C02-band emissions, which approximated unit emissivity shortly after ignition. Burning velocities are also given for some of the test-mixture compositions. Measured flame temperatures were in excellent to fair agreement with theoretical adiabatic values for the CH.-air and CH4-air-N2 mixtures; the best agreement was for the stoichiometric CH4-air mixture. The CH4-air-CF3Br mixtures with =2 pct CF3Br gave poor agreement with theory. The measured temperatures were significantly lower during the early stage of combustion; furthermore, the later stage of combustion was uninhibited and yielded unexpectedly high pressures. Supplemental data from a 2-ft-diam sphere at various initial pressures confirmed that the CF3Br inhibition effectiveness decreases with increased pressure. The possible effects of buoyancy, turbulence, and changing kinetics are discussed.

Thirteen miners died as a result of 2 explosions in the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 mine near Brookwood AL in September 2001. Both explosions were ignited in intake air entries, and both were probably ignited by electrical equipment. With few exceptions, permissible equipment is not required in intake air entries of US underground coal mines Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. studied the electrical equipment ignition sources for the Brookwood and other w disasters to develop recommendations for preventing similar disasters Adherence to National Electrical code® requirements for flexible cords installed in hazardous (classified) locations may have prevented the second massive Brookwood explosion. The 30 CFR Part 7 requirements for battery assemblies should be reevaluated, taking into consideration United Mine Workers of America recommendations and the Zone 1"increased safety" standard requirements for battery assemblies, Class 1 Division 2 or Zone 2 explosion protection techniques are recommended for intake air equipment so that they do not present a methane air ignition source under normal operation before mine power is shut down during emergencies Battery powered circuits intake air that are likely to remain energized during emergencies should be protected by more stringent protection techniques, to protect rescue/recovery personnel. 1. Summary This investigation is concerned with description of the loading function at the underground coal face, and the identification of varia¬bles - geological, geometric, mechanical, and operational - that affect the loading function. The immediate objective of this work was to provide information for operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and the broad objective was to provide guide¬lines for planning and equipment selection in underground coal mining. The loading function was expressed as -a statistically-developed linear mathematical model. Originally, fifteen independent variables were considered which potentially could have influenced the loading function. These variables were constructed on the basis of measurable or estima¬ble geometric and geological properties at the working face, mechanical characteristics of the mining machine, and certain operational proce¬dures of mining. The original model explained 64.0 percent of the experimental variation. The final condensed model explained 54.1 percent of the experimental variation in terms of only five indepen¬dent variables, namely: 1. Ratio: width of cut/total width of cutter 2. Ratio: height of cut/diameter of cutter 3. Total horsepower of cutter-drive motors 4. Rotation speed (RPM) of cutter 5,. A subjective estimate of machine quality and operator skill Certain limitations were found to exist in the evaluation of the variables. Principle among these limitations was the impossibility of precise measurement of tonnage loaded in certain instances.

In a process being investigated by the Bureau of Mines for recovering alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, calcined kaolinitic clay is leached with hydrochloric acid. Iron impurity in the clay is coleached and is removed in a solvent extraction step prior to crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate, which is subsequently thermally decomposed to alumina. The FeCI3-HCl stripping liquor from the solvent extraction step is unsuitable for discharging to the environment; furthermore, economics requires recovery of the contained chloride values. In the present research, it was shown that the stripping liquor can be reacted with calcined clay to yield AlC13 in solution, plus precipitated iron oxides, residual silica, and unreacted excess clay as mixed solids. For the recovery of the AICl3 solution, the slurry could be separated or returned to the clay-HCI process stream at the solids washing step that follows primary HCI leaching of the clay. For the range 20° to 99° C, the time (t) (103 sec) required to react the waste liquor with excess clay, for essentially complete iron precipitation, depends on the absolute temperature (T) chosen, according to the expression t = e[(9.000/T) -23.5J. (1) Alumina was tried as a reagent alternative to clay but was not very effective, even under pressure and at high temperatures.

This paper discusses the application of digital human models (DHM) to examine computer generated forces necessary to move specific joysticks by using roof bolter virtual operators to predict the forces experienced on the operator’s upper extremities. Using DHM and simulations of static movements, investigators analyzed predictions of joint moment and joint force effects on virtual operator’s right wrist, elbow and shoulder and compared them to different body dimensions and work postures. This study exemplifies the ease of estimating upper extremity loads on equipment operators using virtual operators and computer models of equipment and work environment. As expected, comparing results of percentage of joint force and moment reduction using the electronic control and of the mechanical control showed that the electronic control had lower joint forces and joint moments over the mechanical control. The average predicted value of the joint moment on the wrist was 1.84 Nm, elbow 7.85 Nm and shoulder 14.55 Nm and of the joint force on the wrist was 5.06 N, elbow 4.56 N, and shoulder 3.67 N. Because the data illustrates low-level forces to move a joystick, inadvertent actuation of the control is addressed. Regardless of the findings, research is still needed on joysticks in real world situations such as an epidemiological assessment of equipment operators in the field before final recommendations and conclusions can be drawn.

Pulmonary inflammation is accompanied by increased microvascular permeability and leakage of plasma into alveolar spaces. Serum has been shown to affect superoxide (O2-) production from pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) in vitro, and in some cases serum has been shown to be necessary for stimulation of PAM. An electro-optical method was used to measure O2- production from single PAM by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from videorecorded images of individual cells. PAM were stimulated by their initial attachment to culture dishes independent of serum. The addition of 2% serum to the culture medium increased NBTH2 production during attachment, whereas concentrations of 5 and 10% serum had no additional effect. In contrast, PAM incubated for 2 hrs could not be stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or zymosan particles to produce O2- unless serum was present during the incubation and/or stimulation; however, NBTH production was similar in all cases of serum addition. Also2, serum alone did not stimulate adherent PAM indicating that serum is necessary but not sufficient for stimulation of attached. PAM. These results suggest that changes in microcirculatory permeability may have a pronounced effect on superoxide production by PAM and that serum may help regulate or condition these cells during inflammation of the lung. Thermal treatment of respirable size silica dust samples results in marked changes in their hemolytic activity. These changes can be correlated with changes in the characteristics of the particle surface as measured by infrared spectra, zeta potentials, and specific surface area. Silica samples from various sources (Min-U-Sil, fumed silica, and a NIOSH standard sample) were heated or calcined at temperatures ranging from 100-1095C. The hemolytic activity of the crystalline materials decreased after thermal treatment. The behavior of the fumed material was found to be more complex. Material of very large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. Tre changes in hemolytic activity can be related to infrared spectra and zeta potentials of the materials. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of the fumed material disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp, characteristic band at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. Zeta potential measurements conducted in the pH range of 2.0-10.5 exhibit a unique change in zeta potential v.s. pH profile with heat treatment. These findings indicate that the removal of active surface silanol groups by calcination results in reduced cytotoxicity, as measured by a hemolysis test.

"The Keely mine at Dagger, Indiana, is one of the few mines that is being operated successfully on a cooperative basis. This shaft mine is developing 133 acres of coal in the Indiana No. 6 bed, which here averages 5-1/2 feet thick and. lies about 110 feet below the surface. Thirty seven (37) miners and twenty (20) company men or day man are employed, and the daily output is around 300 tons. Practically the entire production is sold by contract for railroad use. No mining machines are used and all coal is produced by pick work.The mine was originally owned and operated by the Stockton Coal. Co. of Dugger, but about eight years ago it was leased to Mr. Roy Price. He sub-leased the property to ten miners, who formed an association known as the Dugger Mutual Coal and Mining Co., to work the mine cooperatively.At first many difficulties were encountered; the cooperative idea is an old one, but the practice was new to those interested. Some of the men were energetic, ambitious workers; others were inclined to let their associates produce the coal but wanted to share in the profits. In time, after a hard struggle and many changes in the personnel of the company, business-like methods were adopted and the mine was put on a paying basis."

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a sampling device developed for measuring the personal exposure to coal mine dust of mine workers. The device is based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) originally developed as a fixed- site environmental particulate mass monitor by Rupprecht and Patashnick Co., Inc., Albany, NY. Currently, the monitoring of exposure to coal mine dust relies on periodic samples taken by traditional coal mine dust sampling units that use a cyclone, filter, pump, and laboratory measurement of the filter mass. Better measurement of mine dust levels has been the goal of industry and labor for nearly two decades. PDM technology offers accurate, end-of-shift and near real time assessment of worker dust exposure. Laboratory and underground tests compared measurements taken by a prototype PDM-2 (a two-piece TEOM) to the average of multiple personal dust samplers monitoring the same space. In the range of mass loadings P between 0.5 and 4.0 mg/m the PDM met a 25% accuracy criterion 95% of the time with 95% confidence. However, some questions still exist about potential bias between types of coal. The prototype two-piece device is in the process of being combined into a single unit that also contains the miners' cap lamp creating a more ergonomic dust sampling system.

Presented below is a review of how the objectives, as outlined in the statement of the problem, were achieved. 1. Methods of evaluating the performance of grounding systems must be described. These methods are the subject of Chapter III. 2. Field trips to operating mines should be undertaken, and a cri¬tique of their grounding systems made upon the basis of obser¬vation and the application of the above techniques. An analysis of field trip data, along with practical recommendations, is in¬cluded in Chapter IV, while a complete review of all field trips is given in Appendix I. 3. Because of their thoroughness, present coal mine regulations should be evaluated, and their applicability to open-pit environ¬ments appraised. This has been done in consultation with governmental agency, manufacturing, operating mine, and consult¬ing engineers. As stated in Chapter IV, insight gained through field observations has served to amplify and extend the base of knowledge from which the recommendations were made. 4. The results of these investigations should lead to suggested Federal standards. Such recommendations comprise Appendix II. In addition, several important factors, which are discussed in Chapter IV, were brought to light as a direct result of the field research. 5.
