Monitoring systems can have numerous uses in the mine. They can aid in the efficient management of the mine by providing environmental trend data, production and maintenance control, and communications. In some cases, they can provide justification to petition the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) fog a variance of one of the mandatory safety standards. They may also increase the gross revenues of the mine by increasing the amount of coal produced or increase profits by reducing the cost of producing that coal. No single system will satisfy the requirement of all mines. Some may require simple hard-wired status-reporting systems; others, multipurpose computer-based systems that collect, analyze, and store data and perhaps control some mine functions. Even though systems vary in complexity, they are all composed of three functional components. The first component is sensors that measure the environmental or production parameters and produce an electrical signal that is fed into the telemetry. The second is telemetry devices that receive the signal from the sensors and transmit it in either analog or digital format to the third com¬ponent, analysis and display equipment. This equipment receives the transmitted signal and either stores it for later analysis or displays it. The analysis-display equipment ranges from simple strip chart recorders with preset alarms to computers, cathode-ray tubes (CRT's), and line printers that can also provide production reports. 4.2 Uses of a Mine Monitoring System A list of potential uses for mine monitoring systems, including both production-related functions and those related to health and safety, was used to develop a questionnaire. It was presented to representatives of the mining community to determine their current monitoring priorities. The responses indicated that the industry's priorities fall into the following two categories: First priority- Production and haulage Maintenance Second priority- Ventilation Communication Fire monitoring Personnel The survey shows that production-oriented systems were the most appealing to the questionnaire respondents. Since even small improvements in production efficiency and maintenance can have a large financial impact, the desirability of monitoring systems that focus on these areas is understandable. The results are summarized in table 4-1. The function that scored 100 was viewed as the most beneficial monitoring function.

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved previous to January 1, 1942, was published In Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The present list covers additional equipment approved during the calendar year 1942. The items have been numbered to indicate the order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gives four air compressors on the Bureau's active list, and the present circular gives the fifth to be approved. Items 90 and 94 under Loading; Machines land Conveyors also appear in Information Circular 7207. These numbers are repeated hero to show that approval was granted during 1942 for additional voltages on machines previously listed one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those which may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that arc available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper and Information Circular 7207 together give the complete list of all available permissible .Mine equipment.

Mineral production was confined to out-put of cement and gravel. However, exploration was being conducted by the U.S.S.R. and the United Nations Development Program. Development of a domestic limestone deposit and crude oil from an offshore oilfield was underway. Benin's currency remained fixed to the French franc. The gross domestic product (GDP) was $977 million in 1981, the latest year for which information was available. 2 COMMODITY REVIEW Cement.-Construction of a cement plant with 500,000 tons per year capacity neared completion at Pobé. The operator of the plant, using locally produced limestone, was the Societe des Ciments d'Onigbolo, a joint venture between Benin and Nigeria. Nigeria was expected to utilize most of the cement produced. Equipment for the plant included a 1,600-ton-per-day, oil-fired pre-heater.

The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the Bureau of Mines to be 961 Bcf as of January 1, 1983. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas re- serves, 271 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 202 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated to be 351 Bcf, and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, which makes up the remaining 137 Bcf. These helium resources are further divided into depleting, nondepleting, and stored classifications. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gas fields that are, or will be, produced for the natural gas they contain. All of the helium in potential (probable, possible, and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 789 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gas fields, are estimated to total 134 Bcf. There is 38 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government- owned Cliffside Gas Field near Amarillo, TX.

A bench-scale study was made of removing hydrogen sulfide from synthesis gas at elevated pressure by iron oxide impregnated on wood chips. The gas contained 0.02 to 0.06 percent oxygen. The removal of hydrogen sulfide by iron oxide impregnated on wood chips is more efficient at elevated pressure. At constant space velocity, longer periods of operation at 400 p.s.i.g. are possible before the exit gas reaches a given maximum concentration of hydrogen sulfide, compared with 200 p.s.i.g. or atmospheric pressure. In tests at room temperature, 60° C., and 100° C., the most effective removal of hydrogen sulfide was obtained at room temperature and the least effective at 100° C. Dry impregnated wood chips removed only about half as much hydrogen sulfide as chips wetted to a water content of 50 percent.

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engine in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. Mathematical models of the dilution and dispersion of diesel exhaust contaminants can be useful only if these models can be validated. In this research report, experiments that were specially designed for the above purpose are described. These experiments were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Safety Research Coal Mine, in Bruceton, Pa. On the basis of this study, the data collected, and further review of available literature, it is concluded that mathematical models of dilution and dispersion are useful tools for mine ventilation planning. Additional objectives of this study about which conclusions and recommendations are reported here include: (a) evaluation of mine atmosphere contaminant monitoring systems; (b) optimum sampling site locations; (c) model sensitivity and error analyses; (d) computer coding of mathematical models; and (e) development of a diesel bibliography. While an extensive bibliography on diesels is provided in this report, Volume II of this final report has 511 references.

The mode of propagation of explosions through narrow passages is important for understanding flameproofed equipment employed in mines. Narrow channels have been used in this investigation that connected between a small explosion chamber and a large chamber containing fuel-air mixture. The oxygen index of the mixture in the small chamber was determined which caused an explosion in the outer chamber. Preliminary measurements have already been given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5457 and suggested that) flames do not pass through narrow channels. The hot, burned gases from the explosion in the small chamber, however, are able to ignite the mixture in the large chamber by a process of hot-gas ignition. Systematic measurements are reported in the present paper that cover the influence of channel length and diameter and the properties of the gas mixtures in the large chamber on the transmission of explosions. The influence of such properties as quenching diameter and flame temperature is also discussed. This paper concludes the work on this problem and presents a theory that describes in detail parameters that influence transmission of explosions through narrow channels. The Bureau of Mines reviewed the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) literature on the nonmetal binary and ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements, with emphasis directed to the following nonmetals: B, C, N, O, and Si. This review examines each of these binary and selected ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements as coatings and gives some of their preparative methods, uses, and properties. A total of 259 references were found for these compounds of the nine elements. This review was utilized in the Bureau's research to provide abrasion-, erosion-, and corrosion-resistant coatings in order to conserve critical metals and protect various metallic surfaces in metallurgical, mining, and energy conversion systems.

The Bureau of Mines developed a concentration method to upgrade and utilize marginal natural or direct-shipping iron ores and fine-grained lean iron ores. Presently these ores receive little beneficiation and accordingly have low iron-silica (Fe-Si02) ratios. Ore samples were roasted with equal weights of solid reductant at 1,100° C for 1 hour to metallize the iron and for an additional hour at 1,200° C to promote grain growth. Concentration was effected by crushing and screening techniques and/or wet magnetic separation. Sized concentrates (minus 4 plus 35 mesh) derived from crushing-screening processes contained from 80 to 85 percent iron that was 90 percent metallized. Iron-silica ratios as high as 12:1 and iron recoveries from 75 to 94 percent were obtained. The sized concentrates were judged suitable for use as blast furnace feed. Minus 200-mesh metallized concentrates derived from roasted minus I-inch plus 8-mesh ore fractions and magnetically concentrated contained 90 percent Fe and 4 percent or less Si02, chemically qualifying them as feed for electric furnaces. Roasting minus 8-mesh ore with hydrogen, then magnetically concentrating it, produced iron concentrates containing 57 percent to 67 percent Fe and 3.6 percent to 8.4 percent Si02. The concentrates having Fe-Si02 ratios ranging from 8:1 to 12:1 were considered adequate for use as blast furnace feed. Overall iron recoveries for the 12 ores tested ranged from 56 percent to 94 percent with an average iron recovery of 86 percent.

In the course of exploratory drilling during World War II by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic and Critical Minerals investigations Program, a problem arose as to the ultimate disposal of the drill core resulting from that program. The difficulties experienced in obtaining factual information to evaluate mineral deposits examined (during that program) influenced the Bureau in a decision to catalog and store the drill cores for future reference. Initially, the drill cores were stored at the nearest Bureau of Mines station that had space available for the purpose. Recently the Bureau stations at Minneapolis, Minn., and Denver, Colo., were designated as the locations of permanent drill-core storage facilities. Drill cores that are retained from Bureau of Mines mineral-exploration projects are stored at these two locations and are given preference in selecting cores for storage. Drill cores are accepted also for storage from other Government agencies, State agencies, private companies, or individuals on the basis of available facilities and consistent with the significance of the core in relation to Bureau of Mines objectives and national interest. Selection and acceptance of such drill core are determined by the Bureau of Mines. The drill cores stored at the two locations are available for inspection by any person having a legitimate interest in the mineral deposits represented by the cores. Approximately 1,850,000 feet of drill core can be stared in the facilities now available to the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 475,000 feet of drill care is stored or scheduled for storage at Minneapolis, Minn., and 240,000 feet of core stored or scheduled for storage at Denver, Colo. A list of drill core now in storage at the Bureau of Mines core-storage facilities at Denver and Minneapolis is included as appendix A.

The Bureau of Mines investigated severe coal mine roof support problems along a section of main entries in the Pittsburgh coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania to identify the causative factors. The mine roof was examined in detail, and various sedimentary structures are described that contributed directly to irregular and unstable roof. Small-scale paleochannels, scours, and related slickensides were identified as the leading cause of bad roof, and isopach maps were prepared to illustrate a method whereby the presence of these structures could be inferred in advance of mining. Probably second in importance was the occurrence of relatively incompetent flaggy, poorly cemented sandstone, weakened by coal and micaceous laminea. No effect of in situ stresses on roof stability was detected.

The Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center has as a long-range objective the development of an equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated within the accuracy with which they are known. If this objective is to be realized, a method of calculation must be known. This report gives the principles of the method we use in such problems. A computer program was developed for predicting these properties, including those at the critical point, that is perfectly general and applicable to any equation of state. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, this computer program was used to evaluate thermodynamic properties of a Redlich-Kwong fluid in the two-phase region. Expressions for calculating various thermodynamic functions specific for this particular equation of state are derived. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated. It is shown that for a Redlich-Kwong fluid there are finite discontinuities in (1) the second temperature derivative of the Gibbs free energy or chemical potential at the critical point, (2) the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve with regard to the temperature on passing through the critical point, and (3) the measured heat capacity at constant volume on passing through the critical temperature when the calorimeter is filled to the critical density. It is also shown that the heat of vaporization is infinite for a Redlich-Kwong fluid at absolute zero.

A computerized moving average technique was developed to interpolate coal seam characteristics between sample points. The interpolative method coupled with multivariate regression analysis and simulation procedures was used to forecast coal properties not readily obtained from an analysis of drill core samples. Coal property forecasts were of two kinds: (1) specific mine property forecasts that are suitable for mine product control and yield a good approximation of the local variation along both the vertical and horizontal axes of the seam, and (2) regional estimates where much of the local seam variation is smoothed out, but the general trends are maintained. Forecasts of the volatile matter, ash, total sulfur, and the heating value for part of the Pittsburgh seam located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia were in good agreement with independent evaluation data. Spatial configuration for preparation characteristics, particularly, the effect of crushing on sulfur release, low-and high-temperature carbonization properties, the Hardgrove grindability index, the coal hardness index, gasification variables, and hydrogenation factors were constructed for the same area of the Pittsburgh seam. These forecasts may be developed from drill core data collected in the exploration phase of mining. The results, which may take the form of a series of maps, are useful to mining, chemical, and combustion engineers, to economists and mine managers, as well as to coal users for mine design, economic analyses, energy forecasts, utilization studies, mine product control, and environmental control and programming.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating hardrock mine, Grace Mine, located near Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Diesel-powered haulage equipment is used in this mine, and the electromagnetic noise environment it creates was measured to see how it differs from the environment created by electric-powered haulage equipment. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. Data are recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape and are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and in amplitude probability distribution plots.

One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

The Bureau of Mines has been studying a modified steam-iron process using coal-derived producer gas for making either hydrogen plus carbon monoxide or methane. To provide a guide for this experimental study, compositions of equilibrium product gases for the reaction of steam plus carbon dioxide with iron were calculated and are discussed in this report. The calculations, which are described in this report, are based on thermodynamic data in the literature and cover temperatures from 800° to 1,300° K., pressures from 1 to 30 atmospheres, and hydrogen-to-carbon atomic ratios in the gas of 4 to 12. The equilibrium gas compositions are discussed in regard to making hydro-gen, carbon monoxide, and methane in the oxidation step of the modified steam-iron process. From the viewpoint of thermodynamics alone, assuming the reactions reach equilibrium, the discussion considers the effects of temperature, pressure, and composition of feed gas upon the composition of the product gas, the degree of oxidation of the iron, and the possible deposition of carbon. The results indicated the following: (1) Nearly all the carbon can be converted to methane at low temperatures (800° to 900° K.) and high pressures (over 20 atmospheres); (2) to obtain high yields of synthesis gas, high temperatures are required. For example, at 30 atmospheres, a temperature over 1,200° K. is required to convert 60 percent of the steam plus carbon dioxide to hydrogen plus carbon monoxide. Lower temperatures may be used at lower pressures) (3) oxidation of the iron increases with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature; and (4) process conditions favoring carbon deposition were found within the range of variables studied, but it is thermodynamically possible to operate the oxidation process with steam and carbon dioxide outside this range of carbon deposition.

Objective As mines become safer and disasters fewer, a time may come when no employees in the mining industry have any practical experience in managing a mine emergency. To fill an emerging gap in mine emergency response training, a multidisciplinary team of researchers and computer programmers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has developed an intervention for mining personnel who would be in leadership positions in the command center during emergencies. It is called MERITS, a computer-based emergency simulation exercise. MERITS is short for "Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation." It provides trainees an opportunity to gain command center experience during a simulated underground coal mine emergency. MERITS allows trainees to practice information gathering, situation assessment, decision-making, and coordination skills without risk to personnel or property. Individuals representing mine emergency response personnel, various State safety officials, and private mine management from three States have participated in MERITS training. What Is MERITS? MERITS is an extension of previous work that compiled a knowledge base relevant to mine disaster management via interviews, analysis of literature, reviews of past events, and observations of mock mine disasters. Findings from prior research found a need for an alternative method of command center training. This new computer simulation is being used to train emergency command center personnel to effectively manage an underground mine fire. Modeled after training simulations developed for other industries (e.g., to address nuclear accidents, chemical spills, evacuations, etc.), MERITS simulates underground and surface events related to the disaster. It exposes the user to events that typically occur during a mine emergency, such as lack of information and miscommunication. It also presents trainees with issues that must be addressed, such as making provisions for briefing news media and victims' families, ordering needed supplies, interfacing with Government enforcement agencies, and housing mine rescue teams. The outcome of the scenario is determined by the users' decisions and their emergency response plans. Field Results Field testing of MERITS was conducted with eight full-day training sessions at four different locations in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. These field tests benefited from the knowledge and experience of State of Pennsylvania inspection officials, representatives of the United Mine Workers of America(UMWA), and private mine management who served as trainees for the MERITS training sessions. Trainees self-reported an average of20 years of work experience in the mining industry. All trainees had participated in Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) training exercises, and many had been involved in real mine emergencies. Trainee evaluation of the MERITS program is summarized below: •Twenty-six of the 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them know how to prepare for a real emergency. •Twenty-five of the 27 trainees believed that the storyline for the MERITS simulation was either "very realistic" or "realistic." •All 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them learn how to better handle a real emergency. •None of the 27 trainees stated that they were bored during the simulation. After the initial field tests, MERITS was refined and retested during training sessions for individuals from State agencies, the UMWA, and private industry. Mining personnel from underground coal and underground stone mines participated and responded positively to the learning experience. The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.
