The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the effects of adding manganese compounds and ores to iron ore pellets. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, sulfate and chloride, plus six manganiferous ores from the Minnesota Cuyuna Range were tested as additives to increase the manganese content of iron ore pellets. One to 5 percent manganese, as a compound or ore, was added to five magnetite concentrates and one hematite concentrate. These concentrates were ballad, indurated (1,300° C), and tested for reducibility. Manganese sulfate and chloride were unsatisfactory additives causing cracking and degradation of the pellets during reduction. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, and the ores were satisfactory additives. The additives increased pellet compression strengths with a corresponding loss of reducibility, as compared to the pellets without manganese additions. The changes in compression strengths and reducibility were caused by the formation of Jacobite spinel and slag within the pellets. However, when the induration temperature was lowered from 1,300° to 1,200° C the reducibility and compression strengths were comparable to the pellets without manganese additions indurated at 1,300° C.

One of the major unknowns in the use of iron and copper is the quantity of various low level impurities, particularly hydrogen, that may be introduced during the deoxidizing process prior to casting. Introduction of hydrogen results in the embrittlement of components made from these metals. In addition, hydrogen bubbles in castings of copper result in the formation of blisters and swelling of the casting. During the last year, a significant effort has been made at the University of Missouri-Rolla to understand the permeation of hydrogen in galvanized automotive steel components and the hydrogen absorption during the electrodeposition of copper. The galvanized steel components consisted of automotive upholstery clips, seat belt holders and brake clips. Although the process of galvanization protects the steel from corrosion the process invariably causes the steel to pick up enough hydrogen to make it susceptible to brittle fracture.

Owing to an upsurge in export earnings. Cameroon made substantial economic Progress in 1978 and 1979. With a real growth estimated at 6%, the gross domestic product (GDP) for 1979 surpassed $5 billion.2 Crude petroleum production was providing a new potential in 1978 and 1979 for achieving national self-sufficiency. Among other benefits, crude petroleum exports were helping to offset the escalating costs of refined petroleum imports and to reduce the 14% to 17% annual rate of inflation. Over the 4 years prior to 1978, Cameroon's petroleum imports increased by 12.1% in volume annually, while the import cost increased by 24.5% annually to about $105 million. Total export earnings for 1978 were $805 million,3 to which crude petroleum contributed $25.3 million and crude aluminum product exports contributed $25.9 million. Petroleum exports had increased to about $240 million in 1979 and were in third place after coffee and cacao. Total imports for 1978 were valued at nearly $1 billion. The volume of petroleum imports decreased in 1979 to 552,000 tons, compared with 622,000 tons in 1978. The European Economic Community (EEC) countries purchased over 75% of total Cameroonian exports and provided most of the Nation's imports. The United States purchased $12.4 million in petroleum exports from Cameroon in 1978. This is the second of a series of publications that describes the progress of mechanical longwall coal mining in the United States in which a German coal planer was employed.3/ Details of the equipment, a description of its operation, and the results obtained in mining the experimental panel were published in the preceding report. Experimental mining with the planer in the first panel showed an improvement in performance over conventional mining methods at the coal company's Stotesbury 11 mine. The work, which was begun on an experimental basis, soon proved successful, and the coal company purchased the equipment for continued use. Two panels, adjacent to the first, were developed and mined with the planer. Each of these panels was shorter than the preceding one because water seepage from a surface creek limited development. On completion of mining in the third panel, the planer equipment was moved by the cooperating company to a nearby mine operated in the same coal bed where a large area of coal suitable for planer mining is available.

In the mica research program conducted by the Bureau of Mines at Norris , Tenn . , many micas other than silicon fluorphlogopite have been synthesized . It has been well established since the initiation of the program that synthetic micas are important materials useful for their superior or unique properties as well as substitutes for natural micas . The possibility of controlling the physical properties of synthetic mica by isomorphic substitution of other ions in the fluorphlogopite lattice further emphasizes the importance of these materials . Accurate measurement and reporting of their properties constitute an essential part of the research program . The study of germanium fluorphlogopite is in keeping with the requirements of a comprehensive study on isomorphic substitution , specifically to identify precisely the material -- chemically , structurally , and optically . The X- ray measurements , including indexed powder and single crystal data , with a description of the methods used to obtain these data , are provided . 5 Earlier work on germanium mica by R. A. Hatch et al . (5) gave an estimate of the cell parameters from X - ray powder data , but no attempt was made to index the diffraction pattern or to determine the space group symmetry . Later work by E. A. Schatz and J. C. Withers (9) listed X- ray and optical measurements , but no attempt was made to index the mica or determine its symmetry . Roth (7) found that germanium dioxide having the a - quartz structure , when heated with equimolar percentages of MgO , CaO , Sr0 , or Ba0 at 1,235 ° C , formed ABO3 -type compounds , e.g. MgGe03 isostructural with enstatite (MgSiO3 ) . Geo₂ also has a rutile - type polymorph with Ge ++ ions in octahedral coordination . Germanium was substituted for silicon in the serpentine structure by Roy and Roy (8 ) using hydrothermal techniques . These authors wrote as follows : "The substitution of Ge + for Si + yielded a magnesia - germania serpentine , formed easily in euhedral hexagonal plates which in some instances were visible in the light microscope . Electron micrographs and the sharp X - ray diffraction patterns confirm a plate - like rather than tubular habit . " It has been shown in this investigation that substitution of germanium for silicon in the mica structure is readily accomplished without radically changing the characteristics of the mica . Substitutions in the mica structure take place in three locations : Tetrahedral , octahedral , and interlayer positions . The tetrahedral positions are normally occupied by Sit or by a combination of Sit with Al +3 the most common combination being 2A1 +3 and 6Si +4 · , The octahedral position , which has six - fold coordination in phlogopite , contains a larger cation such as magnesium . In muscovite it contains only 2A1 ions ; therefore , this mica is considered a dioctahedral mica , whereas phlogopite is considered trioctahedral . +3 The interlayer position has twelve - fold coordination with six oxygen ions from each of two adjacent tetrahedral silica layers . This is the cleavage plane of the mica and commonly contains the largest cation in the mica structure (e.g. potassium) .

The objective was to obtain qualitative information on (1 ) the stress field in a core stub at the bottom, or face , of a cored borehole and (2 ) whether , and at what distance , in terms of core diameters from the face of the borehole , relief of stresses in the core is complete . The photoelastic and brittle lacquer techniques of stress analysis were used to determine the pattern of stresses in two- dimensional models , simulating the bottom of a borehole with a projecting stub of core . The core was stress- free at 1-1 /2 core diameters or more from the face of the simulated borehole . The analyses of the isoclinic and isochromatic patterns in the core near the face of the borehole reveal why core occasionally breaks into thin plates , when core or stress - relief drilling is attempted in highly stressed rock masses , such as heavily loaded mine pillars . stub broke away from the bottom in a hydrostatically loaded artificial rock specimen in a manner indicating that core " wafering" can result from tensile stresses developed in the core when a coring bit penetrates the highly stressed rock mass .

In the course of a study of domestic Manganese resources, 2-ton representative samples of ore were taken by Bureau of Mines' engineers from the Payday claim, Weber County, and the Newcomb-claims, Rich County, Utah. The Payday No. 1 deposit is situated 13 miles northeast of Huntsville, Weber County, Utah. The manganese ore is a. replacement deposit in limestone and consists of manganese oxides imbedded 'in clay and also as the cementing agent consolidating small pebbles and pieces of quartz and limestone.

The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine was evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, end a previously described5/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive physical and. chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel. A microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals with the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

The Bureau of Mines investigated electrowinning and tapping lanthanum metal from lanthanum oxide in a fluoride bath. The electrolyte was composed of LaF3, BaF2, and LiF. Metal containing 0.2 percent impurities was produced at a rate of over 2 pounds per hour. Principal impurities were carbon, aluminum, and silicon. Low-carbon metal was produced by continually discharging the carbon oxide gases and maintaining 0.1-atmosphere pressure. Anode reactions and cell design were found to be important factors in cell operation. Both frozen electrolyte skulls and tungsten metal crucibles proved satisfactory for collecting the metal and did not react with the molten lanthanum.

"The ""rate-of-preduotion curve"" described in the revised Treasury Manual* was devised by the author in May, 1920, and since that time has been use by the oil and gas valuation section of the Treasury Department in determining the rate of production of wells for purposes of taxation. This curve is most useful for estimating the future production of a well, or group of wells, of known daily settled production, where future-production curves and tables based on yearly production records are available. It also provides a means for determining the past year's production of a well of known daily settled production, or conversely, the estimated production on any day for a well of known yearly production.The rate-of-production curve is auxiliary to the production decline curve and is derived from it in estimating the future production of a tract, a production decline curve formed from the records of the tract itself should be used. If such records are not available, and there is no information which leads to the belief that the average production decline of the wells in this tract differs from the average for the pool or district, an average curve for the pool or district may be used.The accompanying chart illustrates a typical rate-of-production curve, with the yearly production decline curve from which it is derived. The production decline curve shown is for an average well in the Augusta district, Butler County, Kansas, and has been constructed from the tables given on page 128 of the revised Treasury Manual.The ordinate (vertical scale on the chart) of any point on a yearly production decline curve represents the production of the well during the year previous to the date shown by the abscissa (horizontal scale). For example, the chart shows that an average well, which produced 100,000 barrels of oil in 1915. produced 92,000 barrels in the year previous to January 19, 1916, produced 53,300 barrels in the year previous to June 1, 1916; produced 49,000 barrels in the year previous to July 1, 1916, 27,000 barrels in 1916, and 10,000 barrels in 1917."

"INTRODUCTION The Miscellaneous Minerals Division of the War Production Board requested the Bureau of Mines to investigate the Gallatin corundum property as a possible source of corundum, which was in short supply due to the war. The Gallatin corundum property, also known as the ""Fuller mine"", the ""Montana Corundum mine"", and as the ""Old Qorundum mine"" was first examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer 2/ in July 1943. Bureau of Mines work on the property started October 11, 1943, was recessed May 5, 1944, and was resumed in October 1944 when the diamond-drilling program started. The project was completed February 7, 1945. The data obtained are given in this report.The Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey in the spring of 1943 and mapped the area the following autumn. The results of these surveys are contained in a memorandum report prepared in December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A fatal explosion in a sealed area at the Sago Mine in 2006 prompted researchers and regulators in the United States to re-examine the requirements for explosion-resistant mine seals. Seals are used in underground coal mines to isolate abandoned mining areas from active workings. Prior to the Sago disaster, mining regulations required seals to withstand a 140 kPa explosion pressure. Recent research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that pressures from explosions can far exceed this pressure. U.S. mining regulations now require much stronger seals. Current research focuses on understanding the science, engineering and management of sealed areas of coal mines. Scientific efforts seek understanding of how explosive methane-air mixtures accumulate using measurements and models of the sealed area atmosphere. Additional scientific efforts aim to understand the explosion pressures that can develop using a combination of numerical modeling and experiments. Engineering efforts aim to produce design guidelines for seals that can resist the new higher pressure design criteria. NIOSH researchers are also developing guidance for monitoring of sealed area atmospheres and inertization of potentially explosive gas mixtures within sealed areas. This paper seeks to encourage scientific discussion among international peers since preventing explosions within sealed areas is of interest to underground coal operators and regulators.

"PURPOSE OF TESTSThe propulsive strength4 developed by the Cardox blasting device depends on the thickness of disk, weight of heater element, and weight of carbon dioxide charge. It might be supposed that the maximum weight of carbon dioxide that can be charged into the shell should give the greatest strength. However, according to the ballistic pendulum, the maximum weight of carbon dioxide with certain conditions of heater and disk has less propulsive strength than a smaller charge; in one condition of test a loss of 39 per cent in propulsive strength was noted. It is therefore of interest to study the effect of the variables that determine the strength of Cardox.ACKNOWLEDGMENTGrateful acknowledgment is made to A. B. Coates, associate mechanical engineer who developed the testing method for measuring pressures in the Cardox shell.DESCRIPTION OF DEVICEThe Cardox blasting device as fully described by the bureau in Report of Investiga¬tions 2920 (1929), consists essentially of hollow—steel shell, cylindrical in shape, an electrode, valve assembly, shearing disk, and discharge cap. The shell is prepared for use by inserting a heater element, closing the open end with a shearing disk, and screwing in place the discharge cap. The charge of carbon dioxide enters the shell through the electrode.The heater element is fired by an electric igniter of the match—head type. The heat released by the heater element completely gasifies the carbon dioxide and raises the pressure of the gas until it is enough to shear the disk."

This Bureau of Mines study was initiated to determine whether or not a large-scale investigation of 400-Hz applications in coal mines was justified as a means of increasing safety in operations due to size and weight reductions in portable and other mining machinery. Potential uses for 400-Hz power in mining operations are explored, and cost and size comparisons with 60-Hz systems are made. The use of variable-frequency motor drive is suggested for conveyors. The conclusion was reached that there is no significant potential safety increase due to a general size and weight reduction, as the fact of such general reduction cannot be demonstrated.

"Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

Preliminary calculations show an economic advantage in using nuclear energy to supply the endothermic heat required for gasifying coal. It should be noted that the various assumptions used in preparing these calculations must undergo further evaluation through additional engineering design and research. The proposed system for gasification is the indirect process cycle with helium heated in a nuclear reactor and passed through an exchanger-type gasifier for the reaction of coal and steam to form CO (carbon monoxide) and H2 (hydrogen gas).

Proximity warning devices can improve workplace safety by alerting workers when they are in a hazardous area near moving equipment. Industrial work sites often present extreme challenges to safety-based proximity warning devices. Many commercially available types of proximity warning sensors and systems can be rendered useless when covered with mud, ice, snow, ore, rock, and other material. The list includes radar, ultrasonic, capacitive, and visual types of sensors and systems. Addressing these shortcomings, NIOSH personnel have developed a patented active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) which employs lowfrequency, low-power magnetic fields which are quite impervious to severe environmental conditions. A shapeable wire loop antenna which provides the marker of dangerous work areas, has been mounted on a continuous mining machine and was mounted inside 1.3-cm thick angle iron. This loop antenna was exposed to more than six months of active underground coal production, which included being covered by and scraped over with tons of rock, sprayed by a continuous stream of water, and immersed in thick mud. After six months the loop antenna showed signs of wear, but was still capable of performing its intended function. The HASARD system is now being applied to other industrial applications and is showing much promise, especially in harsh environments. This paper details the system, describes the tests that have been done, and mentions other areas where it can benefit the safety of industrial workers.

Burundi, a small central African republic located between Tanzania and Zaire, remained essentially a nation of small family farms in 1978-79 with approximately 95% of the population engaged in subsistance agriculture. Coffee and tea continued as the nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports, small tonnages of cassiterite, wolframite and bastnasite, accounted for an estimated 3% of total exports in 1978 and 2% in 1979, or $2 million2 in both years. Burundi's major mineral imports in 1978-79 were cement, iron and steel, and refined petroleum products. Abnormal weather conditions, a drop in world coffee prices in 1978, and the conflict in neighboring Tanzania and Uganda in late 1978 and early 1979 combined to re-strict economic growth in Burundi during 1978-79. The gross domestic product (GDP) posted a gain of 6.7% in real terms for 1978 and an estimated 2.5% for 1979 which was significantly less than the 13.7% recorded in 1977, a time of high world coffee prices. The manufacturing and construction sectors were hard hit in 1979 by the conflict between Burundi's eastern neighbors because of transport disruptions which made building materials and manufacturing inputs almost unobtainable.
