Economy in blast-furnace practice depends largely upon efficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of the furnace. If efficient work is not done in the shaft the hearth and bosh will not function properly. A condition may be readily imagined where the particles of ore in the shaft are so large that the time entailed in the descent of these materials into the bosh is not sufficient to permit proper reduction and preparation prior to the time the ore enters the bosh of the furnace. Another condition may be pictured where the density of the stock column and the flow of stock is such that the ore will take one course and the gas another. Both of these examples will result in insufficient contact between the gas and the ore. Unreduced ore will reach the hearth, and gas which has not been efficiently oxidized will reach the stock line. The result is the use of an excess of carbon in the smelting process. An example of the result of inefficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of a blast furnace is shown by the curves in Figure 1.

Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the Major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these-actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed sub¬jects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting dis¬ease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the ex¬pression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). Low temperature and high-temperature calorimetric measurements were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on high-purity samples of Re02(s) and Re03(s) to determine heat capacities and enthalpies. The temperature range of heat capacity measurements was 5 to 310 K for Re02 and 8 to 309 K for Re03. High-temperature enthalpy measurements alone were determined for pure Re207(s,1). The derived standard entropies are S°298 = 11.43±0.01 cal/deg mole for Re02(s) and S298 = 16.55±0.02 cal/deg mole for Re03(s). High-temperature enthalpy equations expressed in calories per mole are as follows: Re02 (s) , H-H298.15 = 16.002T + 1.600 X 10-3T2 + 3.522 X 105T-1 - 6,095 (298 to 1,400 K); Re03 (s) , H-H298.15 = 20.293T + 3.238 X 10-3T2 + 3.950 X 105 T-1 - 7,664 (298 to 1,000 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 38.437T + 10.309 X 10-3T2 + 4.315 X 105 T-1 - 13,824 (298 to 413 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 30.181 + 17.713 X 10-3T2 - 10,612 (413 to 600 K) ; Re207 (1) , H-H298.19 = 66.101T - 10,092 (600 to 700 K). Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) data and related functions over the temperature ranges investigated are tabulated for the three oxides.

This investigation, which began 90 minutes after the February 3, 1995, seismic event, has benefitted from the assistance of a large number of individuals. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report assesses the resource potential of trace metals present in commercial Ti mineral concentrates. Metals of greatest interest: are those defined as "strategic and critical" by the U.S. Congress in 1981. Metals of interest in Ti mineral concentrates are Cb, Cr, Ta, Th, U, V, and Zr. Commercially available Ti mineral concentrates were studied. Characterization and analysis of major and minor constituents were performed by X-ray diffraction, neutron activation, inductively coupled plasma emission, atomic absorption, and classical wet chemical techniques. Of the metals investigated, the Cb, Ta, and V content of some concentrates may be a significant potential resource, depending on their amenability to recovery.

From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

A part of the Bureau of Mines mission is to help improve the Nation's mineral posture by providing the technology for utilizing low-grade ores. In this regard, laboratory testing by the Bureau of Mines has shown that the removal of insoluble slimes using selective flocculation and flotation is a viable method for treating low-grade potash ores that have a high content of water-insoluble impurities. Results indicated that over 82 percent of the insoluble slimes could be removed from sylvinite ore containing 5 percent water insolubles and 13 percent K20 by using nonionic or cationic polyacrylamide flocculants and cationic, anionic, and/or nonionic collectors. Subsequent potash flotation recovered 87 percent of the potash in rougher concentrates containing 57 percent K2O. Sizing and cleaner flotation of the rougher concentrates upgraded the products to 60 percent K2O. Filtration of the water-leached insoluble-slimes flotation concentrates on a bed consisting of leached insoluble-slimes concentrate mixed with potash flotation tailings recovered 80 percent of the brine. Filtration rates using the mixed bed were nine times faster than filtration rates obtained when the insoluble-slimes flotation concentrates were filtered separately.

The Bureau of Mines made small-scale continuous tests and large-scale commercial plant tests of a calcareous fluorspar ore near Cave-In-Rock, Ill., to determine if the application of the lignin-fluoride process of fluorspar flotation would be industrially feasible for treatment of fluorspar ores, and also to compare the lignin-fluoride process with the quebracho process, which is the method currently used for concentrating calcareous fluorspar ores. The small-scale continuous tests yielded fluorspar concentrates analyzing 93.6 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 87.6 percent of the total fluorspar in the ore. In large-scale commercial plant tests, a fluorspar concentrate analyzing 93.3 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 78.0 percent was produced by the quebracho method. About 86.0 percent of the fluorspar was recovered in a metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrate from the lignin-fluoride circuit which analyzed 89.9 percent CaF2? with a much simpler flowsheet than that in the current commercial application.

A preliminary examination of the mica deposits in Culberson and Hudspeth Counties , Texas , was made in September 1942 by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines . The deposits were reexamined by R. C. Redfield , associate mining engineer of the Bureau in November 1942, at which time he was accompanied by Philip S. Hoyt , geologist , and J. C. Moore , foreman of the Texas Mica and Feldspar Company . Exploratory work was started on February 16 , 1944 , and terminated on April 30 , 1944. A crew of 4 to 10 men was employed under the supervision of the authors .

The Shanton magnetite-ilmenite deposits lie on the east flank of the Laramie Mountains, 43 miles northeast of Laramie, Albany County, Wyo. (fig. 1). The Shanton and other similar deposits in the Laramie Mountains were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers during 1942, 1943, and 1945, and a report2/ describing the results of a dip-needle survey and surface sampling was published in 1946. The Shanton deposits occur in a relatively flat section of the range at altitudes varying from 7,500 to 1,650 feet (fig. la). Prevailing rocks in the Shanton area consist of anorthosite with intrusive dikes of gabbro differentiates and granite. Titaniferous magnetite outcrops in five masses, which are separated at the surface by overburden and anorthosite.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 3,924 samples, representing the products of 116 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August, 1954. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers, The data were obtain& by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation, A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this summer is slightly more volatile than that sold a year ago. The increase in volatility is shown by a lowering of the distillation temperatures, ranging from 2°F. at the average initial boiling point to 4°F. at the average end point. During the past nine years the Bureau of Mines has made semiannual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the eighteenth in the series. The cities in which samples were collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country. Samples were collected in Omaha as well as in the 11 cities where samples were taken last winter. It was believed advisable to include samples from Omaha in order to give a better balance to the survey for the country as a whole.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting laboratory-scale research to determine the leaching conditions required with sulfuric acid for extracting base metal from a matte with a copper-to-nicke1 ratio of 6 to 1. The matte (61.2 pct Cu, 9.7 pct Ni, 3.3 pct Fe, 21 pct S, and about 5 oz of precious metals per ton) was prepared from Duluth Complex (Minnesota) ore by smelting a bulk sulfide flotation concentrate. The matte was pre leached at atmospheric pressure to selectively extract 20 pct of the nickel, and the undissolved solids were referred to as the matte residue. Autoclave leaching of the matte residue extracted over 95 pct of the nickel, copper, and iron. The remaining leach residue in the autoclave contained over 100 oz of precious metals per ton. The leaching conditions required were matte grind of greater than 98 pct minus 325 mesh, pulp concentration of 50 g/1, total pressure of 100 psig with oxygen at 150° C or 400 psig with air at 180° C, 50 g/1 H2S04, 700 rpm agitator speed, and 6 hours of leaching time. The leaching time was decreased to 2 hours by increasing the agitator speed to 1,300 rpm. Sulfuric acid concentration greater than 50 g/1 did not appreciably enhance the base metal extraction, but with less acid, residues with higher iron concentrations were obtained. Supersaturation of the liquor was prevented at 150° C by using a 1ixiviant that contained 30 g/l Ni and 20 g/1 Cu.

This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

Efficient and safe use of mobile roof supports (MRS) depends on the interaction between the MRS and coal strata. Of particular interest to this study are the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods, and MRS load-bearing capabilities. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, the authors have collected and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one western U.S. mine and have completed pseudo-three-dimensional, boundary-element modeling for two typical pillar-pulling plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of MRS’s was calculated to demonstrate how MRS’s contributed to the control of roof block movements. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal-measure rocks and by pillar-pulling sequences and layouts. MRS’s and other support systems play a critical role in controlling the stability of both the immediate roof and the middle roof for a distance of up to 18 m (60ft) above the seam. MRS’s provide unique ground control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of secondary support. Although MRS’s are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at near-peak capacity, whereas posts fail and loose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

The effects of adding boron and boron plus carbon to electrorefined vanadium were evaluated with respect to mechanical properties at low temperatures and response to heat treatment. Grain size was significantly decreased with the addition of 0.05 percent boron, the decreases ranging from 30 percent at 800° C to 75 percent at 1,100° C. Increasing the boron content resulted in only a small increase in strength at room temperature, but at 77° K, boron contents of 0.005 to 0.076 percent increased the yield strength of vanadium over 50 percent, from 70,000 psi to 110,000 psi. When boron and carbon were present together, the individual grain-refining effects obtained with either element were retained. Approximately a twofold increase in strength was obtained by age-hardening the alloys containing both boron and carbon. Alloys with only boron additions did not age-harden.

Several limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines in 1946. This report presents data obtained from the investigation of limestone deposits in the vicinity of Arlington, Snohomish County, Wash. The work consisted of surface surveys and sampling. Samples were taken where complete, or nearly complete, sections of limestone were exposed or where individual beds were exposed at a number of separate .localities. Areas were cleaned by blasting prior to sampling. Channel samples were cut where practical; otherwise chip samples taken. Twenty-one samples were taken. The locations of the samples and the analyses are shown on maps accompanying this report.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a thin-film X-ray fluorescence technique to rapidly determine Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, and Cr in super alloy leach liquors. Total analysis time per sample was less than 15 min, as opposed to several hours for traditional wet chemical methods. Precision and accuracy were checked by replicate analyses of solutions similar in composition to leach liquors, whose analyte concentrations were well known. Coefficients of variation for all elements were found to be less than 2 pet. With the exception of the results for Fe, all relative errors of estimation were also found to be less than 2 pet. Bulk liquids are not introduced into the spectrometer; thus, the potential for damage to the instrument by leakage of corrosive liquids is eliminated.

Researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted geologic investigations in an area of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, that included the 5300-107 demonstration stope using underhand longwall cut-and-fill mining. Structural analysis of the area suggested that argillite beds form planes of weakness between blocks of brittle quartzite, and energy may be released along these planes and at the junctures of fractures. Mapping argillite beds and fractures in the stope wall rock showed that the planes of these features diverged and that their attitudes corresponded from one wall to the other. Seismic analysis showed that the number and location of events varied as each cut was mined, with about 39 pct of the total number of events occurring above the cut being mined, about 54 pct below, and 7 pct at the same elevation.
