In the western United States occurs deposits of low-grade chromite which, when concentrated, may be reduced to ferrochromiun in electric furnaces that derive energy from dams and hydro plants now in course of construction. Montana ore was chosen for the experiments. A 1-ton sample contained 26 percent Cr203, 17 percent Fed, and 17 percent SiO2, plus other constituents, and the concentrates therefrom assayed 44 -percent Cr203, 23 percent FeO, and 0,79 per cent SiO2, Gravity concentration was found to be the best method. Ferrochromiums are of two grades - high-carbon with 66 to 70 percent chromium and 4-112 to 6 percent carbon and low-carbor with 67 to 72 percent chromium and 0.6 to 2 percent carbon. Both are made in electric furnaces that use anthracite as a reducer and suit-able fluxes. The concentrates mentioned mere smelted under different conditions, and it was concluded that domestic ore could be reduced with anthracite to produce a ferrochromium of S to 10 percent carbon content at yields of 90 percent without re-treating the slag. This carbon may be lowered to required proportion with calcium and silicon, but the former requires a great excess and the latter leaves an alloy high in silicon. INTRODUCTION Chromite occurs in several regions of the United States, but the known deposits of this mineral have not been large enough or high grade enough to permit them to compete under normal conditions with imported ores. There are numerous deposits of chrome ore along the West coast. These are generally conceded to be relatively small, although some were worked during the World War. There are some indications of a revival of interest in California chromites. Montana contains large chromite deposits in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties. The utilization of chromite for ferrochromium and. the manufacture of stainless steels is distinctly an electrometallurgical problem; consequently, a study of methods for treatment of chromite might pave the way for the establishment of new electrometallurgical industries in the Western States. This thought is supported by the cheap power that is soon to become available from the western dams, Farther, submarginal domestic chrome deposits might thus be turned into profitable producers.

The Union of South Africa has been interested in oil shale for a long time, and deposits of oil shales, torbanites, and similar rocks have been found in many parts of the country. (Fig. 1.) Samples differ markedly in oil yield and in the characteristics of the oil. The strata vary in thickness, and most of the deposits that have been found are in unfavorable locations because of remoteness from markets or absence of transportation facilities. This report deals mainly with the torbanite deposit near Ermelo, Transvaal, in the Union of South Africa, and the operations of the South African Torbanite Mining and Refining Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as Satmar), in mining the torbanite, retorting it, and refining the crude oil.

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9 ), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Acid treatment of wells tends to increase production capacity and to equalize potential capacity. If offset wells already have been treated with acid, new wells usually are treated to protect the property on which they are drilled against drainage. A computer program for calculating capital and operating costs from material and energy requirements and equipment costs for use in preparing cost estimates for metallurgical process evaluations has been written by the Bureau of Mines' College Park process evaluation group. The program permits rapid recalculation of processing costs when changes of data or equipment are desired, and produces tables of capital and operating costs suitable for publication. Equipment cost summary tables for each process section end supplemental information for input-data checking is included in the computer printout. The program is written in Fortran IV except for several subroutines which are written in machine assembly language for the IBM 7094.3 With a few modifications, the program can be used on other computers.

In sampling dust laden air by drawing the medium into an inlet, some larger particles fail to follow the air and a true sample is not obtained. Inertia prevents particles from accelerating with the air as well as from turning sharp bends; also the particles' weight causes them to fall relative to the air. An analytic solution to the sampling efficiency calculation by Levin gives particle paths and sampling efficiencies for various particle sizes when the inlet can be treated as a point sink. However, the flow field in the neighborhood of an aspirating tube is quite different from a point sink flow. Employing Levin's solution in the outer field, trajectories in actual flow fields have been calculated by computer to locate the critical trajectories separating the entering particles I paths from those paths where the particles hit the tube wall or escape. Sampling efficiencies are presented in terms of 3 variables--a dimensionless particle size coefficient, a dimensionless orifice size coefficient and the tube orientation--for the no-wind case. Over most of the range of sampling conditions, the Stokes drag law can be used and dependence on the variable--particle Reynolds number--can be ignored. A procedure for achieving maximum efficiency in design of a sampler is proposed. Whether these results apply when typical room-sized eddies constitute the ?calm air? environment is not known.

[Asphalt and road oil are the principal products manufactured from Wyoming ?clack oils? which, because of their high asphalt an high sulfur content, are difficult and costly to refine into high-grade motor fuels, burning oils, and lubricants by pre sent methods. Accordingly, the remand for these asphaltic residuums for the construction of roads and other uses is a controlling- factor in the quantity of crude oil produced. The increasing utilization of special asphalts as inexpensive bonding, insulating, and waterproofing materials indicates the desirability of obtaining information on the yield and properties, of asphalts from Wyoming black oil to promote a wider and more stable caret for these asphaltic materials.]

This report on water requirements for the New Mexico mineral industry includes data on industrial operations closely related to mineral production. It contains general information concerning public water supplies at five principal cities and a short discussion of water needs for agriculture. Background data are presented regarding the geography, hydrography, and water laws of New Mexico, as well as precipitation and evaporation characteristics of the State. Most of the information on source, quantity, distribution, cost, and treatment of water was obtained in interviews with company representatives. Water systems at 46 operations are illustrated by schematic waterflow diagrams. The study revealed that the New Mexico mineral industry in 1962 used about 16 billion gallons of new water and reused 152 billion gallons, a total usage of 168 billion gallons. Consumption amounted to 7.6 billion gallons. Of the 16 billion gallons of new water, 11.9 billion gallons was "self- supplied" from ground water sources, and 2.6 billion gallons was self supplied from surface sources. Approximately 1.5 billion gallons was purchased. Some of the water from company-owned wells is piped as far as 30 miles. Reported costs of the self-supplied new water range from 1 to 20 cents per 1,000 gallons and average 8 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. Inadequacy of the supply of new water at many operations necessitates large-scale recirculation. Reported costs for recirculating water (power and maintenance) average 1.8 cents per 1,000 gallons. For the entire New Mexico mineral industry in 1962, the value of product was $42 per 1,000 gallons of new water intake and $88 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Analyses of 40 water samples, listed in the appendix, show the wide range in water quality at plants throughout the State. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the mineral industry indicate that the total demand for new water will increase from the 16 billion gallons used in 1962 to 24 billion gallons in 1980, a 50 percent increase; and to 36 billion gallons in 2000, which is 125 percent more than the 1962 intake of new water.

The data reported in this bulletin are largely the result of experiments conducted by the Salt Lake City station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of metallurgical research of the University of Utah. The work on lead is only one of the phases of the investigations carried on at that station during the years 1914 to 1916. The results of similar work with zinc ores and with copper and other ores will be published in future reports of the bureau.

This report provides the results of a two year study of the projected time and cost requirements for new mine development in Wisconsin and is based on a unique blend of information from mining company officials, state regulatory agency officials and contractor experience. Through formal cooperative and review agreements with Kennecott Copy per Corporation, Exxon Minerals Co., U.S.A. and Noranda Mines Ltd., and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources plus informal arrangements with knowledgeable Wisconsin persons, lists of the tasks and subtasks required to plan a new mine in Wisconsin were developed. Times and costs were assigned to all tasks and subtasks and these data reviewed by all cooperators. Critical Path Method Diagrams were then developed for a generalized mining project. Total time and cost for the premine planning process was estimated to be 25..1 years and 223 person-years of professional time excluding public affairs effort respectively. By eliminating redundancies in the process and by increasing project efficiency through early public review and participation, recom¬mendations were made to lessen the time and lower the cost of premine planning. The streamlining recommendations could shorten the overall critical path length to 18.16 years and lower the cost to 208 person-years of professional time excluding public affairs effort. The estimated distribution of professional effort (cost) for mine planning in Wisconsin approximates 50.5% for traditional mine engineering tasks, 36.6% for environmental-regulatory tasks and 12.9% for traditional geological-exploration tasks.

The production of bituminous coal by stripping methods has become an important factor in some areas, especially in the Central and South Central States. In the latter, production at strip mines exceeds that at deep mines. A uniquely mineralized area extends from northwestern Canada through Alaska into eastern Siberia. Some of the metals found there are relatively rare in the conterminous United Stales. Among these are cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite. Geologic evidence suggests that cobalt and the platinum-group metals may be present in deposits that could constitute nationally important reserves. Chromite in potentially minable deposits is known, but it may be relatively less abundant. Limited reserves of these metals have been delineated, but most of the favorable terranes and reported occurrences throughout the vast expanse of Alaska remain unexplored. As part of the mineral studies mandated under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, the Bureau of Mines' Alaska Field Operations Center and the Bureau's research centers at Albany, Oreg., and Reno, Nev., are cooperating in a long- range program to investigate occurrences and delineate reserves of cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite in Alaska. Studies of other critical and strategic minerals will be phased in during succeeding years, as ongoing projects are completed. This first in a series of annual reports summarizes available information about deposits and past production of cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite, and describes current and planned Bureau investigations of these minerals.

This Bureau of Mines report is concerned with the testing procedures for evaluating clays, shales, and slates for lightweight aggregates using the rotary-kiln method of production. To meet the increasing demand for light-weight concrete, rapid, accurate methods for appraising raw materials for light-weight aggregate are needed. Preliminary tests were made on samples of clay, shale, and slate, using laboratory equipment, and the data were used to establish operating conditions for pilot-plant-size rotary-kiln tests. Lightweight concrete was made from the processed aggregates and the properties determined. The results show that the laboratory data can be used to guide rotary-kiln testing, and, with the exception of sampling, a complete appraisal of a raw material for lightweight aggregate concrete can be made in 3 days by the methods described in this report.

The tests reported in this paper were made in the East Texas field in the summer and fall of 1932 as a part of the Bureau of Mines study of the operation of flowing wells and reservoir performance; and to determine, if possible, the minimum reservoir pressure necessary to produce the wells in this field by natural flow through different sizes of flow strings. The minimum reservoir pressure that would be required to maintain natural flow through 2 1/2-inch tubing was determined experimentally for the existing energy conditions in the East Texas field. With the present available data, however, it 'is impossible to predict accurately or to determine by calculation the necessary energy requirements for maintaining the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures under all conditions. Although some valuable data were obtained which seem to have application to the solution of problems involving vertical flow, this important research of the petroleum industry is so involved that more study of the complicating factors influencing the flow of oil-gas mixtures through vertical pipes is required. Versluys4 has presented a mathematical analysis of the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures which covers the fundamental theories of the problem-although, as he points cut, there are factors, particularly friction, slippage, and solubility of the gas in the oil that must be mown or determined experimentally before the equations he has developed can be applied to actual
