Before listing the laboratories and the work performed there, it is proper to make clear what is done and what is not done by Federal bureaus, States, and Territories, as well as by Canada and Mexico. FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays, analyses, or tests for individuals or firms unless they be incidental to investiga¬tions that are of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry. All significant results obtained in this way are made public through published reports. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be subjected to a cursory examination.

Dissolution of chalcopyrite with acidified ferric sulfate produces a sulfur layer on the unreacted chalcopyrite surface that interferes with further dissolution. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a process to improve the leaching kinetics of these types of diffusion-controlled systems. The system features the Bureau-developed turbomill, an attrition grinder that scrubs the reaction product coating away from the unreacted mineral grains during leaching. The system can be operated continuously at any temperature up to the boiling point of the leaching agent. This method is a hydrometallurgical alternative to chalcopyrite smelter technology and eliminates sulfur dioxide emission problems with its associated costs. Batch testing at 900 C with the chalcopyrite-ferric sulfate system resulted in copper extraction exceeding 99 pct. At an optimal energy consumption of 1,520 kW· hjst, 95 pct of the copper was extracted. The pregnant liquor was clarified and tested for typical solvent-extraction recovery of the copper. Two-stage extraction and two-stage stripping recovered 96 pct of the copper in an electrolyte suitable for copper electrowinning.

Sixteen elements were determined spectrochemically in the general range of 3 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity columbium . Samples were converted thermally to Cb2 O , mixed with graphite and Ge02 , and excited for 15 seconds using a 15 - ampere dc arc . For the molybdenum determination , the oxidized samples were mixed with NaCl and Geo₂ and excited for 30 seconds . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates , and spectral line transmittance values were measured photometrically . Relative - intensity ratios of selected analytical and internal standard spectral lines were plotted against concentrations of standards to form curves from which concentrations of impurities were read . Average precision of the method was 11.2 percent relative standard deviation .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a yielding steel post for underground mine support. The report covers concept development, laboratory tests, modifications, and field evaluations. The objective of this work was to develop a stiff support member capable both of supporting high loads and yielding when excessive amounts of mine entry closure were present. The 6-to 7-ft steel post was designed to yield nearly 2 ft while maintaining a 45-ton (force) load. The post is a three-piece unit consisting of top and bottom telescoping legs and a separate foot bracket. It develops its load-carrying characteristics when the lower pipe, with an attached interference ring, is forced into the larger top pipe. Laboratory tests were used to determine critical loads and post performance for various post lengths. Field tests showed that the posts could perform in actual mining conditions. The post has the ability to provide support in highly yielding ground and also, because of its slender profile, enhance ventilation and provide more area for travelways and escapeways. The design is simple enough to allow for fabrication at most mine shop facilities.

The Bureau of Mines studied the uniaxial compressive strength of model rock pillars as a function of the angle and spacing of noncohesive planes of weakness. The model pillars were prepared from NX 2-l/8-inch diameter drill core of limestone, sandstone, and granite, and the planes of weakness were diamond saw cuts ground flat and smooth. The angle of the planes of weakness, measured from the horizontal, varied from zero to 57° in approximately 15° increments. When two planes of weakness were used, the thickness-to-diameter ratio of the wafer was 1/4, 1/2, and 1, Approximately 400 model pillars were tested in uniaxial compression. The results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars decreases rapidly as the angle of the plane of weakness increases from 30° to 57°, and that the spacing of these planes of weakness has only a minor effect on the strength. The effect of the number of horizontal planes of weakness, with a spacing of 1/4 and 1/2 of the diameter, upon the compressive strength of model pillars was also investigated. These results indicate that as the number of planes of weakness increases the compressive strength of the pillar decreases. Normalizing the data provides useful estimates of model pillar strengths for any rock type.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the recovery of vanadium, uranium, and phosphorus from low-grade phosphorite ores and concentrate by leach-ing with H2S04. Samples containing 0.12 to 0.23 pct V20S, 0.009 to 0.012 pct U30S and 18 to 30 pct P20S were treated by batch-agitation leaching, roasting followed by acid leaching, salt-roasting followed by acid leaching, and leaching under pressure. Maximum recoveries using leaching alone ranged from 78 to 98 pct of the V20S and 74 to 88 pct of the U30S-Leaching under pressure resulted in extractions of 88 to 95 pct of the V20S and 84 to 89 pct of the U30S. Leaching following roasting--with or without NaCI--produced extractions of 97 to 99 pct of the V20S and 86 to 91 pct of the U30a. Depending on the technique(s) employed, phosphate extractions ranged from 89 to 99 pct. Solvent extraction laboratory tests were conducted to selectively re-cover vanadium and uranium values from acid leach solutions. An average of 95 pct -of the U30a was recovered using di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid, plus trioctylphosphinic oxide. Essentially all of the V20S was recovered with octylphenyl acid phosphate plus isodecanol. The phosphate remained in the raffinate.

A modified transpiration apparatus was devised by the Bureau of Mines to permit rapid and accurate measure of the vapor transport and vapor diffusion coefficients of antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) and other compounds at temperatures to 1,045 K. The apparatus was equipped with dual condensers and valves to switch the flow of vapor in a fraction of a second from one condenser to the other, thus allowing short-interval sampling under equilibrium conditions. Reliability of the technique was established by measuring the vapor pressure of ZnC12 as a function of temperature and comparing the results with published data. As part of an investigation of the vapor concentrations and species of accessory element sulfides associated with copper and zinc smelting, the apparatus was used to measure the rate of vapor transport and diffusion coefficients of vapor over liquid Sb2S3 as a function of temperature between 870 and 1,045 K. The calculated vapor density was combined with published direct measurements of vapor pressure to calculate the average molecular weight of the gaseous species. Average molecular weight of the vapor in equilibrium with Sb2S3 ranged from 286 to 112 g/mol over the temperature range studied.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program seeking improvements to the Bayer process, a typical Jamaican bauxite was heated at temperatures up to 500° C in hydrogen, and its leachability under Bayer process conditions was measured and properties of its leached residue were observed. The objectives were to find ways to decrease the amount of organic carbon in bauxite or in leach liquor derived from it without impairing its leachability, and to improve the leached residue's filterability. Techniques employed included heating bauxite under pressure in an autoclave with hydrogen, and in flowing hydrogen at ambient pressure in a tube furnace. Leaching tests were done with a 600-mL stirred reactor. In some of the leaching tests, ferrous sulfate (FeS04) was introduced before leaching to produce a partially magnetic product. Results showed that exposure to hydrogen at temperatures from 160° to 360° C progressively diminished the bauxite's content of organic carbon and decreased the ratio of organic carbon to aluminum in leach liquor, an improvement that would allow a process using hydrogen-treated bauxite to be operated at a smaller recycle ratio, thereby consuming less energy and allowing greater throughput for a plant of given capacity. The bauxite's leachability was not impaired by high-temperature pretreatments, except at temperatures higher than 280° C. Pretreatments in hydrogen produced black, partially reduced bauxite which upon leaching gave a residue that was attracted to a magnetic field and was amenable to separation from green liquor by a magnetic filtration method.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a rapid, accurate method of analysis for small amounts of calcium in wolframite concentrates. This analysis is necessary to determine if the wolframite concentrates meet United States National Stockpile Specification P-57R2, which limits the calcium content to 0.2 percent. Because of the small depth of the sample analyzed in fluorescent X-ray spectrography, the calcium Kaline intensity was a function of the chemical composition of the calcium-bearing particle as well as the total matrix composition. This particle-composition effect was particularly important in this analysis, as the calcium may be present as a carbonate, tungstate, phosphate, etc. Three methods of preparing the sample eliminated the variation of calcium Ka intensity with mineralogical occurrence: (1) Reduction in particle size by extensive grinding, (2) chemical fusion with sodium carbonate, and (3) solution of the calcium by an acid attack.

"In preparing this paper, an attempt was made to obtain results of plant-scale carbonization tests on washed and unwashed coal tram to same mine. A letter. in which the following questions were asked, was sent to some 50 coke-oven superintendents and others who might be interested:“What is the influence of washing coal on:(1) The chemical and physical properties of coke, as for example, the size, the amount of breeze, the fracture, strength, cell-structure, etc.(2) The quantity and quality of gas and by-products.(3) The capacity of the ovens.(4) The composition of the coal..""Your general opinion, as well as any specific data or results of testa, on this important subject will be greatly appreciated.""Of the 45 replies received, 24 stated that they had never used washed coal; 11 had used washed coal but had no comparative data on similar coals washed and unwashed; 7 answered some of the questions based on their general experience; and 3 gave some test data on Pittsburgh bed coal from western Pennsylvania. In none of the three tests did the washed coal come from the same mine as the unwashed. The washed coals in the three tests were from the same washery - one of modern construction in which the operations are under careful technical control in order to give a uniform product containing a minimum of surface moisture. The unwashed coals which were previously used in these plants were from different nearby mines in the same coal bed, and were supplied by the same company. Obviously, no sweeping or finale conclusions can be drawn from these few tests on coal from a single washery. Therefore, the writer vas obliged to consult the literature, coal-carbonization and coal-washing engineers, and other authorities to supplement the fragmentary information gleaned from the questionnaires in order to present a picture of chat gas engineers may expect from the use of washed coal in a carbonizing plant."

As part of the Bureau of Mines health and safety research program in strata control, a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system capable of pene-trating approximately 10 ft into the mine roof has been devised to identify anomalistic conditions. The GPR system consists of a transmitter with carrier frequencies of 250, 500, and 1,000 MHz, utilizing a dipole antenna, and a receiver, consisting of a dipole antenna fed into a sampler with a time base housed in a storage oscilloscope. A computer was utilized for data acquisition and data processing. Data analysis by computer enhancement revealed recognizable return ra-dar signatures from the middle man rock and main roof of the test site. These stratigraphic anomalies can be cataloged for recognizable fea-tures, which from the past history of the mine may have been shown to create strata control problems. Early recognition of such features could lead to immediate corrective actions and result in the saving of lives.

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential supply of cobalt from known domestic resources, both as a primary product from some deposits and as a byproduct from others, and found that U.S. production could play an important role in meeting U.S. cobalt needs by the mid-1980's. This production would be of a relatively short duration, however, with production declining significantly before the year 2000. As part of the study, a tonnage-price relationship was developed indicating the quantity of cobalt that could be produced from known cobalt-bearing deposits at various primary commodity prices and at a 15-percent rate of return on the required capital investment. All capital and operating costs are calculated in August 1980 dollars, and commodity prices are based on August 1980 prices. Known U.S. cobalt-bearing deposits which represent the current U.S. cobalt reserve base contain some 310,800 metric tons of cobalt in slightly over 1 billion metric tons of demonstrated mineralized material. Approximately 37 percent of the cobalt contained in the reserve base is considered recoverable using existing technology. Of this quantity, some 87,000 metric tons of cobalt is economically recoverable assuming a cobalt price of $25 per pound, a copper price of $1 per pound, and a lead price of $0.40 per pound. Assuming that the cobalt price decreases to $15 per pound, keeping copper and lead prices constant, the quantity that is considered economically recoverable declines to some 45,700 metric tons. Domestic cobalt consumption in 1979 was 7,900 metric tons (17.4 million pounds). Currently, no primary cobalt is produced from domestic resources, and none has been produced since 1971.

This paper presents a review of published investigation dealing with the importance of sulfur compounds in the deterioration of materials or providing some basis for estimating the extent of loss shareable to such air pollution. Materials included are cement, stone, metals, paint, leather, paper, sand cloth. The investigations may be divided into two classes, one of the laboratory type in which the sulfur content and the humidity of the air were controlled and the other dealing with the exposure of materials to atmospheres not under control. The first type of work has shown that cement is subject to deterioration by the action of sulfur dioxide gas. The experiments with stone indicate that although limestone takes up sulfur dioxide, from the air, moist sulfur dioxide-air mixtures alone cannot be used for establishing- the comparative weathering- qualities of the different types of stone by accelerated test methods. Laboratory tests indicate that sulfur compounds in the air accelerate the corrosion of iron, steel, zinc, copper, and nickel at normal air temperatures and at certain relative humidities. It has also been indicated that certain types of paint are, affected by high sulfur dioxide concentrations, and that paper is attacked by sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. The investigations of the second type show the amount or variation of corrosion in different localities and under different types of exposure. The investigations (10) (18)4/ during which sulfur determinations were made indicate that sulfur dioxide is a main controlling factor in the corrosion of iron and steel but according to Quick (18) may not be for some nonferrous metals. In general, the laboratory tests do not Jive definite data on the loss due to sulfur compounds at the concentrations normally found in the air. The data from atmospheric exposures are not complete from the standpoint of the exact effect of the sulfur compounds. Damage to materials so exposed is affected by factors such as other chemical contaminants, humidity, rainfall, solid deposits, and sunlight. The Bureau of Minas has been charged by the Congress with the responsibility for administrating the provisions of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act. One of the important duties of bureau inspectors under this act is to determine whether proper measures are taken to prevent mine explosions, which in moat miner includes Judea adequate rock dusting The investigation made after the explosion in Orient No. 2 mine, December 21, 1951, showed that much information is lacking on the adequacy of current rock-dusting and duet-sampling practices in the United States. To obtain such information, an intensive sampling survey was conducted by the Bureau in an Indiana coal mine. This paper summarizes the more Important findings from this survey, describes special samplings at several Pennsylvania coal miners, and discusses related studies in the Bureau's Experimental coal mine.

The mining industry of the United States has for many years possessed the dubious aistinction of having the poorest accident rate of all of the major lines of industrial endeavor in this country, and until recently there ras little or nothing to show that any material improvement might be expected. However, there are now numerous trends indicating that the corner has ceen turned at last, and it is strongly hoped that the mining industry is likely to follow the railroads, the cement and other industries in operating with occurrence of only a reasonable amount of loss of life and limb through accidents. The complete accident figures for metal and nonmetallic mineral mining for 1931 are not yet available, but fragmentary data shor that 1831 vill un- questionably have very low accident rates, probably the lowest in the history of our metal mines. One underground metal mine has produced over 14,000,000 tons of copper ore rithout a fatality; another metal mining company with an electric slovel operation has handled upwards of 75,000,000 tons of material, copper ore and waste, without the occurrence of a fatality; an iron-ore compan, which orns six mines (three underground, three open pit), has operated every one for a year or more without a lost-time accident with a con- siderable number of employees and a large production; and alot.er iron-ore producer with 30 mines and about 3,000 employees as an average of nearly 10 months of operation in 1931 without a lost-time accident. umerous other wonderful safety records of metal mines in 1931 indicate unmistaimbly tat the record of the noncoal mining industry of the United States as a role in 1931 will undoubtedly be found to be excellent. Since its creation in 1910, the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines has pioneered in the development of mineral technology, through research. From the very beginning, research on mine health and safety has been a dominating concern, and a responsibility that expanded markedly as a result of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Until the mid-1970's research on fuel technology and coal production also was an important part of the Bureau's work. But in the four years following the 1973 oil crisis, Congress established a reorganized Federal energy research apparatus in which all fossil fuel research-encompassing extraction, use, and conservation-was centralized. Today, the Department of Energy houses Federal research on coal mine production technology, while research on coal and noncoal mine health and safety and environmental technology, and on noncoal mine production technology, remains in the Interior Department as a continuing responsibility of the Bureau of Mines.
