During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1.) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams. (2.) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard' were consistent throughout their calibration. (3.) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple. It seems that a calibration between 0 and -193° C. can be made within the stated accuracy by determining experimentally the e.m.f. of the particular couple at -78.50°, the normal sublimation point of carbon dioxide, and at -182.97°, the normal boiling point of oxygen. The Bureau of Mines, in its alumina miniplant project to investigate alumina recovery from domestic, non bauxitic ores, has conducted research on the use of a hydrochloric acid leaching, gas sparging crystallization technology. An important element of this research is the efficient separation of undissolved, siliceous residue from AICI3 -bearing leach liquors by continuous, horizontal, countercurrent vacuum belt filtration. In an effort to calculate material balances quickly and to predict material balances based on different belt filtration configurations, the perfect-mixing-cells-in-series model (PMCS) for calculating material balances around belt filters was used. Because of the porous nature of the solids, the model produced erroneous material balances. Therefore a reliable model, the shrinking voids model, was developed postulating the presence of an unwashable voids liquor volume that decreases with decreasing liquor AICI3 concentration. This volume decrease postulation is equivalent to assuming that dilute liquors flow more freely, causing more voids liquor volume to become washable. Least-squares based computer programs are provided, which are useful not only in producing material balances from plant data but also in predicting balances for untested configurations using the same feed materials.

The presence of pyrite (FeS2) in coal can cause or contribute to several problems for the coal mining industry. These problems, which include spontaneous combustion, roof falls, floor heave, and accidental explosions in coal surface mining when ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are used, result from pyrite oxidation. Pyrite oxidizes exothermically in the presence of air and moisture to form a large variety of products, including hydrated ferrous and ferric sulfates, and sulfuric acid. Some of the products are reactive chemicals and strong oxidants. The volume of many of these oxidation products exceeds the original volume of the pyrite; as a result, the adjacent coal disintegrates and its surface increases, rendering it more susceptible to oxidation. The heat from pyrite oxidation raises the temperature of the adjacent coal, accelerating the oxidation and self-heating rates of the coal. These combined chemical, physical, and thermal effects are the cause of the aforementioned problems. When ANFO is used in surface coal mines and contacts ferrous sulfate, a highly exothermic reaction ensiles. Additional hazards are fires or explosions caused by the frictional ignition of methane when the pyrite in the coal is struck by a cutting bit during mining.

The water sensitivity of the oil - gas - producing sandstones in three fields in the Patrick Draw area of southwestern Wyoming was estimated by laboratory testing . The tests used to estimate sensitivity , which is a measure of the loss of well productivity if the producing formation is invaded by fresh water , are : Porosity ; permeability to gas , water , and brines ; saturation characteristics with air displacing water from the samples and by mercury injection ; and identification of clay minerals by X - ray diffraction . Laboratory results indicate that the degree of water sensitivity of the sands in the Patrick Draw, Table Rock , and Desert Springs fields vary , in that order , from moderately sensitive to highly sensitive . The main cause of the sensitivity appears to be the movement of fine particles in the pores , but the swelling of a small amount of an expandible clay mineral may also contribute to the permeability reduction observed in the samples . Laboratory results further indicate that the permeability of the sands to fresh water is seriously reduced if they are first flushed with sodium chloride brine ; calcium chloride brine is less harmful to the sands than sodium chloride brine . The low original permeability of the oil sand in the Patrick Draw field , together with its moderate sensitivity , indicate that the rate of water injection for the secondary recovery of oil will be low . Limited field experience in two pilot - injection wells confirms this prediction .

"INTRODUCTION The investigation of the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and the study of methods for eliminating these hazards, conducted by the Bureau of Mines, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. since 1929, was continued during 1933.From May and through December 1933 these tests were supplemented by a study of the manholes of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the Special Service Department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Boston Consol¬idated Gas Co.The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres and of shipping the samples to Pittsburgh was the same as that used heretofore. In previous reports the relative explosibility of the samples was calculated by adding the percentages of the illuminants, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethane, dividing the total by 6.5, and multiplying by 100. Experience has shown that the factor 6.0 is more nearly correct; therefore, this has been used in calculating the relative explosibility of all the samples listed in appendix A and B of this report. Accurate flammability and ignitability data for chemicals form the cornerstone of procedures used to assess the hazards associated with commercial chemical production and use. Since 1967 the ASTM E27 Committee on the Hazard Potential of Chemicals has issued numerous, widely used consensus standards dealing with diverse testing and predictive procedures used to obtain relevant chemical hazard properties. The decision to issue a standard rests solely with the membership, which consists of representatives from industry, testing laboratories, consulting firms, government, academia, and instrument suppliers. Consequently, the procedures are automatically relevant, timely, and widely applicable. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the widely used standards, complemented with hypothetical but relevant examples describing the testing strategy, interpretation, and application of the results. A further goal of this paper is to encourage participation in the consensus standards development process. The paper is published in two parts. The first part (in the preceding issue of Process Safety Progress) dealt with the E27 standards pertaining to thermodynamics, thermal stability, and chemical compatibility. In 1967 the United States consumed 58.8 quadrillion Btu of energy. Both the Atomic Energy Commission and the Resources for the Future, Inc., a private economic forecasting group, predict that the United States energy requirements will reach 135 quadrillion Btu by the year 2000. In 1967 bituminous coal produced 21.4 percent of the energy used in the United States and anthracite coal another 0. 5 percent. Coal Reserves Coal reserves make up about four-fifths of the United States storehouse of fuel in proven reserves. Seventy-five percent of all fuel, likely to be found and recovered is coal. Electric utilities consume more than half of the bituminous coal mined in the United States in generating 53 percent of the nation's electricity. Atomic Energy Commission analysts have proposed the development of a vast "national energy system" based upon long-distance electrical transmission from abundant untapped coal reserves in the western United States. The study predicts that even if uranium supplies are available and economic breeder reactors developed, coal requirements for electricity generation will more than double by 1980 and increase another 50 percent before the year 2000.

This paper, describing the mining practices at the Pilares mine, Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts. At present (1930) practically all the mineral production from the Nacozari district is from the Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The ore is mined for its copper but contains associated silver in small quantities.

The wolframite mineral series was studied to determine the effect of the FeO - MnO ratio on unit cell symmetry and thermal stability. This work was undertaken to evaluate the analytical procedures now in use for wolframite in scheelite and to aid in the development of improved methods of analysis. Wolframite grains were hand-picked, crushed, and screened; impurities were removed by selective magnetic separations using a Frantz isodynamic separator. The samples were further checked by optical spectroscopic and microscopic examination.

A voltage regulator was added to prevent false trips with line voltage variations. 2. A Ground Wire Trap was designed to eliminate problems with parallel paths and provide spark suppression. 3. A three phase filter was designed to reduce 60 Hz leakage current. 4. A portable tester was designed to permit complete test of installed systems. 5. The design was modified to insure trip with an open ground wire in the event of a failure of any one semi-conductor component.

Using three-dimensional (3-0) graphics computing to evaluate new technologies for computer-assisted mining systems illustrates how these visual techniques can redefine the way researchers look at raw scientific data. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is using 3-D graphics computing to obtain cheaply, easily, and quickly information about the operation and design of current and proposed mechanical coal and metal-nonmetal mining systems. Bureau engineers developed a graphics simulator for a continuous miner that enables a realistic test for experimental software that controls the functions of a machine. Some of the specific simulated functions of the continuous miner are machine motion, appendage motion, machine position, and machine sensors. The simulator uses data files generated in the laboratory or mine using a computer-assisted mining machine. The data file contains information from a laser-based guidance system and a data acquisition system that records all control commands given to a computer-assisted mining machine. This report documents the first phase in developing the simulator and discusses simulator requirements, features of the initial simulator, and several examples of its application. During this endeavor, Bureau engineers discovered and appreciated the simulator's potential to assist their investigations of machine controls and navigation systems.

THIS PAPER is concerned with two aspects of the behavior of coal: (1) Dispersion by solvents atmospheric pressure and high temperature and (2) the destruction and regeneration of the coking properties of coal. Several pure polycyclic compounds and a coal-tar fraction were found to extract 95 percent of the organic material of a bituminous coal. About 20 percent of the extract was soluble in benzene, and this fraction contained the ?coking principle? of the coal. From an extensive chemical spectroscopic, and x-ray study of the benzene-soluble material, some conclusions could be drawn concerning the composition and structure of this fraction of coal. A possible commercial application of the extraction technique is in the preparation of low-ash carbonaceous material for the manufacture of electrode carbon.

A study of the composition of the corresponding fractions of a primary and a high-temperature tar was undertaken to throw light on the net results of the pyrolysis of the primary products of coal decomposition in high-temperature coking practice, with reference both to total quantities of the chemically similar constituents and to their distribution throughout the boiling range. No exactly parallel investigations are on-record. The distribution of substances in high-temperature tars, however, is fairly well understood. Such tars are more or less similar, for they consist of the more stable phenols, aromatic and olefinic compounds resulting from the pyrolytic decomposition of a wide variety of primary tar constituents. For example, from a typical distillation curve for high-temperature tar phenols it may be seen that the greatest portion of the phenols distills between 180° and 220° C., a fairly narrow range. Low-temperature tars, on the other hand, are more complex, and hence exhibit dissimilarities from one to the next. Edwards, who has made a study of the acids, bases, and neutral oil of four low-temperature tar distillates, shows that the bases and neutral oil are evenly distributed among the fractions but that the concentration of the acids is greatest in the 200° to 230° fraction. Morgan and Soule find that in tar from the "Carbocoal" process, the 237° to 281° fraction has the highest acid content, whereas Davis and Parry find the 200° to 225° fraction of Freeport tar richest in phenols. Previous investigators have noted the following differences between primary and high-temperature tar: In the latter, naphthalene and anthracene occur in large quantities, the paraffins and naphthenes are negligible, the percentage of higher phenols is much lower than in primary tar, and the lower and more stable aromatic hydrocarbons have increased. In an endeavor to reconcile the change undergone when a primary is converted into a secondary tar, the writers have been unable to find references dealing with the extent of change which any one of the constituents of primary tar may undergo when subjected to secondary heating effects in the presence of other components, and the amount of the more stable compounds that may be expected from a given starting material.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed rotary-coring-operations data to compare mud and air as coring mediums, and to compare core recoveries, penetration rates, and cost data for the respective mediums as part of an investigation of the susceptibility to secondary-recovery techniques of petroleum reservoirs in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This report describes the rotary-diamond coring equipment and operations employed while coring 20 wells--10 cored using mud, and 10 cored using air. Data relevant to the draw works, rotary-table power, drill pipe, drill collars, core barrel, core head, mud pumps, or air compressors are tabulated. Average bit weight and rotary speed, core recovery, and penetration rates are listed for each formation cored. In general, core recoveries were better from the mud-cored wells, whereas penetration rates were faster for the air-cored wells. Coring costs were about the same for single-formation wells cored with either mud or air; however, costs increased considerably when multiple-formation wells were cored with air.

On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite .4/ Appropriations were made in July 1937, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typically subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series o tests in the standard Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncaking coal was the first one of its rank that ha& been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall. temperatures ranging from 540°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products axe collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties axe then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal.

The National Safety Competition , a safety contest conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines , United States Department of the Interior , to promote safety at mines and quarries , has just resulted in the award of safety trophies , known as the " Sentinels of Safety" , for 1939. Awards were made to a bituminous- coal mine in Wyoming , an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania , a metal mine in Michigan , and a nonmetallic -mineral mine in Alabama ( all being underground mines ) and to anopen-cut mine in Minnesota and a stone quarry in Michigan. The awards signify that the recipients won first place in their respective groups in an accident-prevention contest by operating during 1939 with the smallest loss of time in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked at the mine or quarry . Each of the trophy-winning companies for 1939 operated his property without a disabling injury to an employee , except at the anthracite mine , whose record , while not free of accidents , was better than that of any other mine in the anthracite group . The " Sentinels of Safety" trophy is a bronze statue of a mother and infant welcoming the father safely home after his day's work in the mine . Six trophies were provided by THE EXPLOSIVES ENGINEER magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines . These trophies remain in the custody of the mining companies for 1 year , after which the trophies are transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest . A replica of the trophy is provided for permanent retention by the company surrendering the bronze trophy . In addition to the award of the safety trophies for 1939 , each man employed at a winning mine or quarry receives from the Bureau of Mines a certificate of honor in recognition of his part in helping his company to win the trophy . Companies ranking second , third , fourth , or fifth in their respective groups , and all mines and quarries whose records were free of disabling ( losttime) injuries and showed at least 30,000 man-hours worked during the contest year were awarded certificates of honorable mention . Mines and quarries that won the " Sentinels of Safety" trophies for 1939 and those that were awarded certificates of honorable mention are indicated in the following paragraphs .

Insofar as prevention of mine explosions is concerned, it is apparent that the coal-mining industry has profited but little from experiences during the past 15 years. The fact that explosions can be prevented if well-known preventive measures are adopted and conscientiously carried out appears to warrant the conclusion that many coal-mining people are indifferent to the hazards that may result in explosions. Although the principal burden of preventing explosions is upon the management, and much of the evident carelessness in failing to place in effect and to enforce suitable precautions, is assessable directly against management, the worker also has a very definite responsibility, and numerous explosions have resulted because of his failure to carry out his part in accepted principles of safety. The record of fatalities from mine explosions during the past 5 fiscal years has been anything but encouraging or about which coal-mining people can take pride; more men were killed by explosions (673) than were killed from the same cause during the preceding eight years combined (577). During each of the fiscal years 1942 and 1943, 152 fatalities resulted from explosions, compared to 163 during the fiscal year 1941, 206 in 1940, and only 16 in 1939.

The linear cutting system, developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, uses geometric principles developed by Cardan to produce a nearly constant cut depth. The new system has been extensively tested in a synthetic material under laboratory conditions to verify mechanical capability and to identify operational characteristics. Comparisons between 15-rpm linear cutting and 50-rpm rotary cutting systems show significant improvement in respirable dust entrainment, product size distribution, and energy usage. Respirable dust is reduced by as much as 90 pct. Recovered product showed a 67-pct reduction in -0.32-cm (-1/8-in) material and a 200-pct increase in +5.08 cm (+2 in) material. Average power was reduced by 66 pct for the linear cutting. Because the bit cutting paths differ between linear and rotary cutting, it was necessary to compare the two at the same cut depths and bit types. These comparisons show that low revolution per minute rotary cutting entrains about the same amount of respirable dust as the linear cutting system, but the average shaft torque may be 55 to 130 pct greater for the rotary system.

The methods used and the funds available for the development and oper- ation of shall mines and the reopening of small abandoned mines frequently present problems that tax the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the mining engineer far beyond that required in the mass production from large deposits. The objective of this paper is to describe in considerable detail the means whereby engineers have solved local problems in reopening an abandoned mine at which equipment, facilities, and funds were limited... The Etowah Coal & Iron Co. Gadsden red-iron-ore mine at Gadsden, Ala., 18 of interest in this category since it is the only independent red-ore mine under active development in the State. All other red-ore mines in Alabama are owned or controlled by the large iron or steel companies. The The mine, located on the southwest end of Shinbone Ridge in the outskirts of Gadsden lies in an ares once productive. but now idle, for many years. ore is relatively highgrade compared with that in the Birmingham area, but the bed is thin and somewhat lenticular. The presence of a large blast furnace at Alabama City, 3 miles from Gadsden, and the growing scarcity of red-iron ore supplies for it offered inducements for reopening the mine in 1946. Up to the time this circular was prepared (1947) only a small quantity of ore (about 1,500 tons) has been produced and shipped to the furnace. A force of 14 men was employed in sinking the main slope and developing a third "lift" (a local term for level) 100 feet below the old mine workings.
