METALLURGICAL ACTIVITY in 1963 was again dominated by the insatiate demands of research and development conducted in conjunction with the nation's defense and aerospace programs. An increasing effort was noticeable throughout the year, however, to apply to the commercial field many of the processes and techniques that have been developed by government-sponsored research. Particularly effective has been the Industrial Applications Program of the National Aeronautic and Space Agency through which many of the technological advancements made during the course of NASA research and development have been published and released to the public. POWDER TECHNOLOGY Powder metallurgy techniques for fabricating metals, not long ago declared outmoded because of improved casting and shaping methods, have since made an astonishing comeback. Traditionally mechanical pressing of powder shapes has been employed when melting and casting was difficult or impossible, when phase relationships needed to be sidestepped, or when machining costs could be avoided. Hence, it has long been used for producing relatively small special shapes of high-melting metals and alloys. Small iron parts produced with a punch and die have been common for many years, but powder metallurgy techniques are now applicable to a wide range of materials and items. Hard-to-handle materials including refractory metals and their alloys are now rolled, forged, or extruded from billets made by sintering isostatically compacted powders. The major element of the powder metallurgy industry still comprises iron shapes, however, and two-thirds of the annual 100,000 tons of powder metallurgy products are made of iron. The largest single user of powder-forming techniques is the automobile industry which currently consumes 14,000 to 16,000 tons of iron powder per year. A typical 1963 model auto contained more than 100 pressed powder parts (e.g., transmission gears, timing gears, sprockets, ball joint suspensions) totaling 5 to 7 pounds per car. The reversal of smoke products-of-combustion (POC) from a mine fire was determined in a mine section with the airway connectivity of an electrical Wheatstone bridge. Four diesel-fuel fire experiments with fire heat-release rates between 504 and 771 kW were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Smoke reversal propagated upwind from the fire with significant leakage into the upwind diagonal airway and without causing a complete reversal of airflow in the diagonal airway. A control measure consisting of a brattice suspended half entry height from the entry roof was determined to abate the smoke rollback. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the smoke movement agreed with the measurements.

It is generally accepted that typical coalbed gases (methane and carbon dioxide) are sorbed (both adsorbed and absorbed) in the coal matrix causing it to swell and resulting in local stress and strain variations in a coalbed confined under overburden pressure. The swelling, interactions of gases within the coal matrix and the resultant changes in the permeability, sorption, gas flow mechanics in the reservoir, and stress state of the coal can impact a number of reservoir-related factors. These include effective production of coalbed methane, degasification of future mining areas by drilling horizontal and vertical degasification wells, injection of CO2 as an enhanced coalbed methane recovery technique, and concurrent CO2 sequestration. Such information can also provide an understanding of the mechanisms behind gas outbursts in underground coal mines. The spatiotemporal volumetric strains in a consolidated Pittsburgh seam coal sample were evaluated while both confining pressure and carbon dioxide (C02) pore pressure were increased to keep a constant positive effective stress on the sample. The changes intemal to the sample were evaluated by maps of density and atomic number determined by dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). Early-time images, as soon as CO2 was introduced, were also used to calculate the macro porosity in the coal sample. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photographic images of the polished section of the coal sample at X-ray CT image location were used to identify the microlitho types and microstructures. The CO2 sorption-associated swelling and volumetric strains in consolidated coal under constant effective stress are heterogeneous processes depending on the litho types present. In the time scale of the experiment, vitrite showed the highest degree of swelling due to dissolution of CO2, while the clay (kaolinite) and inertite region was compressed in response. The volumetric strains associated with swelling and compression were between ± 15% depending on the location. Although the effective stress on the sample was constant, it varied within the sample as a result of the intemal stresses created by gas sorption-related structural changes. SEM images and porosity calculations revealed that the kaolinite and inertite bearing layer was highly porous, which enabled the fastest CO2 uptake and the highest degree of compression. Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

In 1980, gold, silver, and pit and quarry construction materials were the principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji. The combined value of these minerals totaled some $7.2 million,2 over 85% of all mineral production, Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products continued to increase, but gold and silver production from Fiji's only operating mine declined slightly from the previous year's level. Mineral exploration has been carried out by U.S., Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and South African companies since the early 1960's, and a high level of activity was maintained throughout 1980. At the end of 1980, some 40 mineral prospecting licenses covering over 4,300 square kilometers were in force, and 19 applications were under consideration by the Mineral Resources Department. Total expenditures by mining companies on land base projects exceeded $6 million in 1980.

"Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blende ores. Metallic iron also is present in the mill circuit, and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well-known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation feed may be noted by even perfunctory examination. First of all the mine contributes metallic iron, then the coarse-crushing machines add their share, and finally the fine-grinding medium its portion. If the grinding is with cast-iron balls the amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. Thus it is that much more metallic iron is present than would be indicated by noting the ball consumption. An estimate that the total amount of metallics is twice that supplied by the balls and liners might not be far amiss.That copper sulphate plates out on iron in an acid solution is well known, but since flotation is practiced commonly in solutions where acid has not been added this reaction has not been given sufficient thought.This problem has been the basis of a study undertaken jointly by the Mississippi Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, at Rolla, Missouri. Its importance may be understood better when the tonnage of zinc ores now being treated by flotation in this country is considered. According to Gaudin4 5,536,244 tons of zinc or were treated by flotation during 1927. In these operations copper sulphate was employed as an activating agent; the amount per ton averaged 0.81 pound for straight sulphide zinc ores and 1.16 pounds for complex ores. Since such large quantities of zinc ore are treated by flotation and since metallic iron is always present, the importance of studying their reactions on each other and the effect of their reaction"

Changes in the 1978 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1977, were of a mixed nature. Output of tripoli-type materials and garnet increased in both tonnage and value. Emery production also increased. But special silica stone product sales decreased in both tonnage and value, and the reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material also decreased for 1978. In 1979 output of tripoli-type materials and special silica stone products decreased in both tonnage and value when compared with the previous year. The tonnage and value of sales of garnet and manufactured abrasives increased when compared to 1978 data.

1. INTRODUCTION In the early 1980s, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center required that a large reverberation acoustic facility be constructed. This facility was designed to determine the sound power level emissions of mining equipment, especially continuous miners and jumbo drills. A contract for a conceptual design of a reverberation chamber was awarded to Wyle Laboratories of Huntsville, AL, which had extensive experience in the design, construction, and accreditation of acoustical reverberation chambers. The following standards were referenced as guidelines for the design of the chamber: ANSI S1.31-1980, “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Broadband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms” and ANSI S1.32-1980: “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Discrete-Frequency and Narrowband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms.” Specific requested criteria included that the room be large enough to accommodate typically large mining equipment and that there be adequate acoustical modal density in the frequency range of interest. It was also required that the room dimensions would support broadband acoustical measurements down to the 100 Hz third octave band. With the closing of the Bureau of Mines in 1996, this reverberation chamber lay dormant for a number of years. However, this facility is now part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). One of NIOSH’s missions is to decrease noise induced hearing loss among the nation’s mineworkers. To this end, PRL researchers are refurbishing and instrumenting this reverberation chamber to facilitate assessment of the various engineering controls being developed to decrease the sound power level emissions of mining equipment. Early on, this work has sought to bring the chamber up to the level of ISO 3743-21 standard for engineering grade measurements for broad-band noise, with a longer range goal of improving the lab to meet the requirements of ISO 37412standard for broadband precision grade measurements. 2. DESIGN OF THE REVERBERATION CHAMBER The nominal room dimensions are 18.3 meters long by 10.3 meters wide with a height of 6.7 meters. The chamber volume is 1,286 cubic meters. These dimensions are important, as few reverberation facilities are large enough to test typically huge mining equipment. The floor is poured concrete with a sealer to make it acoustically reflective. The walls are built of hollow concrete block, 16 inches long x 8 inches high by 12inches thick. Stress analysis programs such as MULSIM/NL, LAMODEL, MinSim 2000, and EXAMINETAB are used in the mining industry to analyze stresses and displacements in coal mines, platinum mines, gold reefs, and tabular-type deposits. These relatively simple numerical models can efficiently simulate yielding and failure of a rock mass near a mine opening and subsequent stress transfer. The main input parameters for these models are a family of nonlinear stress-strain curves for the in-seam material. For many applications of these models, such as in coal mining, extensive field measurements and observations exist from which to estimate these stress-strain curves and calibrate the numerical models; however, such measurements are lacking for other types of mines. A three-step method is presented to determine nonlinear stress-strain curves for boundary-element (BE) programs used in many mining applications. The method requires a suite of laboratory-scale strength tests at various confining pressures. Note that this analysis uses laboratory-measured strength and modulus properties of alluvium. The dependency of the mechanical properties of alluvium on scale has not been established, although more tests are being planned. However, it is believed that the relative comparisons performed are valuable regardless of scale effects. First, the FLAC2D computer program is used to model the laboratory tests and determine cohesion (c) and friction angle () for a Mohr-Coulomb material model. Second, another FLAC2D model uses the c and values to calculate vertical stress and strain around a single opening in the rock mass. This model calculates the stress-strain path of points at various distances from the opening boundary. Finally, based on these stress-strain paths, the stress-strain curves needed for a BE analysis are derived. This three-step method was demonstrated in a large, flat-lying underground test facility in very weak rock. The BE analyses agreed well with observations of failure at the test facility and provided a basis for evaluating the behavior of alternative layouts.

Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.0 are frequently created in underground hard rock mines. The strength of slender pillars can be estimated using empirically developed equations. However, the equations can provide variable results when the width-to-height ratios approach 0.5. This paper investigates some of the issues affecting pillar strength at low width-to-height ratios in hard brittle rock. The investigation includes an evaluation of empirical pillar strength data presented in the literature and observations of pillar performance in underground limestone mines in the eastern United States, supplemented by numerical modeling in which failure processes and sensitivity of slender pillars to variations in rock mass properties are evaluated. The results showed that the strength of slender pillars is more variable than that of wider pillars. The numerical model results demonstrated the increasing role of brittle rock failure in slender pillar strength. The absence of confinement in slender pillars can result in a fully brittle failure process, while wider pillars fail in a combined brittle and shearing mode. The onset of spalling in slender pillars occurs at or near the ultimate strength, while this is not the case for wider pillars. Slender pillars are shown to be more sensitive to the presence of discontinuities than wider pillars, which can partly explain the increased variability of slender pillar strength. Two examples are presented, which illustrate failure initiation by brittle spalling and the sensitivity of slender pillars to the presence of discontinuities.

Shortly after the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 we passed by Congress, the Bureau of Mines was authorized to begin a program of investigation of domestic sources of strategic minerals. Since World War I, the Philipsburg district had been virtually the only one in the United States that was producing manganese on a commercial scale. Consequently, the district was among the first to he investigated. During the summer of 1939, the Geological Survey mapped the geology and ore deposits of the district. In late July 1939 the writer examined the district for the Bureau of Mines. On the basis of this examination and of the work performed by the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled at several properties in the district during the summer of 1940. This report reviews the mining history and geology of the district, and presents the factual data obtained by diamond drilling.

In 1984 and 1986, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral appraisal of the 315,000-acre Lemhi Range study area. This area is located in Lemhi and Custer Counties, about 25 mi south of Salmon, Idaho, and is in the Northern Rocky Mountain physiographic province, Topography is generally rugged with elevations ranging from 5,600 ft to about 11,350 ft above sea level. Since the 1880's, approximately 500 mining claims have been located within the study area; about 400 were current at the time of this investigation. Also, part or all of 12 patented mining claims are in the study area. During Bureau field work, forty-four mineralized sites were examined. The sites had been explored by 80 adits, 14 shafts, and about 140 pits and trenches. At least five properties in the study area have had significant production; the adjacent Mohawk, Grace Phelan, and Snowbird claims had a combined total of 136,000 oz of silver and 67,000 lb of lead; production at the Brown Bull was about 14,800 oz of silver and 115,000 lb of lead; the Portland mine yielded an unrecorded amount of silver. The Hilltop mine, located a few hundred feet outside the study area, produced 125,000 oz of silver, 2.7 million lb of lead, 87,000 lb of zinc, and 62,000 lb of copper from mineralized zones that might extend into the study area. More than 10,000 lb of copper were produced at the Blue Jay mine from workings located about 1,000 ft outside the study area. The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal the presence of identified resources in the study area. However, several areas contain mineralized sites and are known occurrences. Some of these warrant additional work to further delineate the mineralization and possibly determine identified resources.

A Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA) was developed in Australia after a series of mine disasters in the 1990’s. A MHRA is used to help prevent major hazards, i.e. fire, explosion, wind-blast, outbursts, spontaneous combustion, roof instability and chemical and hazardous substances, from injuring miners. A MHRA is a structured process that identifies the characteristics of major hazards, assesses and ranks the risk they present, and evaluates engineering and administrative controls to mitigate them. These controls typically consists of a broad spectrum of prevention, monitoring, first response, and emergency response techniques and helps to move an operation from a reactive to a proactive approach towards safety. This paper documents a MHRA performed at an underground mine where strata instabilities and fire hazards may threaten the condition of its escapeways. The objective of this MHRA is to 1) identify what hazards could affect the egress through the mine’s escapeways, 2) determine what unwanted events pose the greatest threat for the mine, and 3) recommend a plan to prevent or recover from the potential disruption of egress through the escapeway. The plan provides information on the key existing controls that should be monitored and audited, and makes recommendation of new potential controls to further reduce related risks. By documenting the use of MHRA to this specific ground control issue, this paper provides a framework for others to judge the merits of this approach and to help design and perform these activities.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated on a daily basis to image mining-induced changes to the overburden above a longwall mine. The hypothesis was that a coherent redistribution of seismic velocity, due to the development of high-stress zones, could be imaged at the mine scale. Seam depth was 360 m and source location depth varied from 100 to 1000 m. Sixteen geophones were distributed over a 600 by 600 m square area on the surface above the mine. More than 12,500 events were recorded over an 18 day period. The recorded seismicity provided input for the local-earthquake tomography code, SIMULPS. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated well with high abutment stresses. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated. These results indicate that velocity tomography can be used to provide a better understanding of temporal changes within a rock mass, and can potentially be used to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to unanticipated ground failures.

After emphasizing the importance of quantitative rock mass classifications in mining, originally directed to selection of rock support measures, but subsequently to estimates of rock mass properties such as rock mass strength and rock mass modulus of deformation, current attention calls for a classification specifically for rock mass excavability by tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which are used extensively in tunneling as well as in the mining industry. This paper introduces the Rock Mass Excavability (RME) index for predicting excavability of rock masses by TBMs using a quantification of machine performance and rock mass conditions. The RME index is based on five input parameters aimed at relating rock mass behavior and machine characteristics: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of the rock material, (2) drillability/abrasivity, (3) rock mass jointing at mine drift face, (4) standup time of the excavation, and (5) groundwater inflow. Development of the RME index entailed the collection of extensive data from more than 28 km of tunnels and some 400 case records from projects in Spain involving double-shield TBMs. In the process, a number of statistical correlations have been established between RME and such output parameters as degree of machine utilization, advance and penetration rates, thrust and torque of the cutterhead, and the specific energy of excavation. It was found that the RME index provides a particularly significant correlation for predicting the average rate of advance (m/day). In essence, the RME index is a classification system that features interaction of rock mass conditions with boring machine characteristics for use in the early stages of a project. It should be noted that the RME index does not replace the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) or Q-systems as used in mining and tunneling; indeed, one of the RME input parameters, standup time, is determined from the RMR. However, the approach presented introduces a specialized tool relevant to excavating tunnels and drifts. Possible applications to hard-rock mining are explored.

In this report, the application and limitation of the various equipment available for surface coal mining are discussed. The correction factors for adjusting equipment performance arising from machine design, material characteristics, and modes of operation are presented. Engineering design, pit layout and equipment selection are discussed with mathematical derivations. Two computer programs (SMCALC and SMRES) have been written to aid in pit design and equipment selection. The Strip Mine Calculation Program (SMCALC) can be used to select the bucket size and reach of shovels and draglines for various pit widths. It will also calculate the number of drills, loading shovels, trucks and bulldozers needed to achieve a production target. The Surface Mine Reclamation Equipment Selector (SMRES) can be used to select the number of bulldozers, scrapers and front-end loaders needed to achieve the desired production.

Recently, a large Pittsburgh seam longwall mine was nearing depletion of a major portion of its current reserves and had begun to develop in a different direction from its original portal area to access additional reserves. This meant that a large area of the mine would be abandoned and sealed. However, continued use of the original mine portal area required that the water accumulating in the abandoned mine would eventually need to be pumped to the surface. This would be in addition to the discharge water associated with the new portion of the mine. Several pumping and sump options were investigated to handle the quantity and quality of the anticipated discharge water. This paper describes some of these options, their advantages and disadvantages, and the final engineering decisions. Some problems and unanticipated outcomes, as well as the eventual solutions are discussed, including: (1) estimates of pump requirements, (2) water pool size, (3) eventual water quality, (4) anticipated inflows, and (5) integration into the overall mine water system.

This report supplements the date contained in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6156, "Special features of core drilling in the salt beds of Western Texas and New Mexico," by J. S. Wroth. That circular dealt with the drilling of the first 12 of the 24 potash tests made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. "INTRODUCTION An extensive test program is in progress by the Bureau of Mines to determine ways and means of recovering ferromanganese-grade ore 6/ from the wide-spread domestic manganese and manganiforous iron deposits. Samples for testing were received from the Interstate Manganese Co. in northeastern Tennessee, 11 miles west of Mountain City and 10 miles southwest of Damascus Va. The ore deposit occurs in the residual material of the Shady dolomite 7/ as an unconsolidated mixture of hard and soft manganese oxides and clay.Numerous tunnels and pits have developed a large reserve of ore in an area of about 15 acres. One pit 250 by 50 by 20 feet is being mined by rower shovels. The ore is hauled to a washing plant for log-washing, hand-sorting, and jigging. Coarse concentrates from the washing plant are marketed without further beneficiation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. F. Publications issued after June 30, 1965 are noted where pertinent in footnotes but are not abstracted.
