This paper describing mining practice at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on mining method, and practice in the various mining districts in the United States. At present (1929) practically all the mineral production in the Morenci district is from the Humboldt mine of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation. The mining method used is adapted to the type of ore body being exploited; it has been developed by adopting methods used elsewhere and making necessary changes to fit local conditions. Improvements in current practices are still being made.

The United States Geological Survey has estimated 1 that the State of Washington contains 11,412,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and 52,442,000,000 tons of subbituminous coal, in beds more than 14 inches thick. As the present rate of production is about 4,000,000 tons a year, Washington apparently contains coal enough to supply Pacific coast markets for many years. The character of the coal beds of Washington renders the production of clean coal very difficult, and a considerable proportion of the output is washed before it is marketed. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants. On account of extensive folding and faulting of the coal measures, mining in Washington presents many difficulties; therefore a description of the methods employed at some of the mines may be useful in planning operations in other regions, and is presented in this bulletin. The coals of Washington differ in quality, ranging from true lignites in Cowlitz County in the southern part of the State to anthracites in the Mount Baker district of Whatcom County, in the north~ rn part. Most of the output consists of subbituminous and bituminous coals, the latter including both coking and noncoking varieties. Analyses of the coals of the State and descriptions of the beds from which the samples were taken have been printed in publications of the United States Bureau of Mines.2 Details of coal beds and analyses of the coals of King, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties have also been published by the Washington Geological Survey; 3 and most of the coal beds of the State are described in some detail in a bulletin of the United States Geological Survey.4 In 1918 mining was in progress at 72 mines in the State 4a; 46 of these mines each employed more than 10 men underground. These mines were distributed as follows: Thurston County, 1; Lewis County, 7; Kittitas County, 14; King County, 16; Pierce County, 6; Skagit County, 1; and Whatcom County, 1. During that year a total of 5,847 men were employed, 4,172 underground and 1,675 on the surface. The average number of days worked in the State was 275, and the average yearly output per man was 706 tons. Coke is made only in Pierce County by four companies, which have a total of 341 beehive ovens. In 1918 they produced 93,699 tons of coke. Up to 1919 mining machines were little used in the State. In 1917 only 6.61 per cent of the coal :produced was undercut by machines. In that year 58.95 per cent of the coal was mined by hand, and 34.44 per cent was shot off the solid. The explosives used were as follows: Black powder, 36.6 per cent; dynamite, 38.l per cent; and permissible, 25.3 per cent. The State of Washington is divided naturally into two parts by the Cascade Mountains which extend north and south somewhat west of the middle of the State. The coal areas east of the range will hereafter be referred to as eastern Washington-though nearly all of it is west of the middle of the State-and that on the west side as western Washington. The geographical distribution of the coal fields is shown in Plate I. Exploration of the State has not been exhaustive enough to preclude the possibility of discovering, besides the foregoing, other districts that contain deposits of coal in commercial quantities.

With the curtailment of imports of European chalk during the World War of 1914-18, however, finely ground limestone, of domestic origin was used more extensively to satisfy the American demand.

"INTRODUCTION Much of the recent progress in increasing the efficiency of oil-well performance can be attributed to advancements in the art of cleaning wells. Through research and development by operators and service companies during the past decade, significant improvements in the application of engineering and chemical principles to well-cleaning technology have widened greatly the scope of ""clean-out"" methods to the end that greater ultimate recovery of oil will be attained.This report reviews recent improvements and developments on this important problem in California; it describes also the use of various methods and tools for cleaning wells to stimulate or revive their productivity. Developments in preventing and removing mud sheaths in well-completion operations also are described. The report is based on a field survey, supplemented by data from the technical and patent literature and from manufacturers' catalogs, which contain much valuable information.In preparing the material for publication as a Bureau of Mines report, the author has been fully aware of certain limiting conditions that attend the discussion of a subject such as that treated in this report. The following are examples:1. To a considerable extent, well cleaning in California is done with tools rented from service companies, and their representatives and employees are specialists in jobs of this type. They usually have working experience with their own equipment and methods which greatly exceeds that of persons whose interest has been casual or who have had no opportunity to study the subject in detail in actual practice. Many of the tools and methods are covered by letters patent for the protection that may be in developing and successfully applying these mechanical and chemical means of increasing the production of wells. Frequently several years have been required to perfect a given tool or technique, requiring relatively large investments to establish a service that is remunerative to those who have primary interest in a certain development and at the same time attractive enough to the operators of producing properties (because of greater quantities of oil delivered into the flow tanks) to warrant employment of or contractual agreements with a particular service group."

The mines in the eastern part of the now active region of the Tri-State zinc district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have unusually acid water, which during periods of moderate or no rainfall is used in the mills to replace losses from evaporation, seepage-, and tailings disposal. Its use has caused difficulties by corrosion of equipment and by interference with flotation. The growing importance of flotation, which requires good water, and the increasing troubles caused by the corrosion of the milling equipment have prompted the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation With the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., to investigate the action of the waters on flotation and to undertake to develop means of obviating their harmful effects. The work was under the immediate direction of W. T. Schrenk, consulting chemist, United States Bureau of Mines, and professor of chemistry Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and. Will H. Coghill., supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the United States Bureau of Mines.

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The studies were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell, chief engineer, Petroleum and Natural-Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, Washington; D. C., and H. C. Bahrain's oil revenue increased from $337 million2 in 1916 to $378 million in 1977. Despite the increase in value, petroleum receipts made up only 584 of all Government income in 1877, compared with 74% in 1976 and 83% in 1975. Bahrain became an oil producer in 1932 with the discovery of the Awali oilfield, and since that time, the Awali oilfield has produced over 600 million barrels of crude oil. Awali production in 1977 was 21.2 million barrels. Bahrain shares the revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield, located in the Persian Gulf north of Bahrain, equally with Saudi Arabia. Revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield was approximately $179 million or 47% of oil revenues in 1977. Output from the Abu Safah oilfield was 48 million barrels, an increase of nearly 30% over 1976 output. The Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO). the nation's only oil-producing company, was owned 40% by California Texas Oil Corp. (CALTEX and 60% by the Govern¬ment. The Government established Bahrain National Oil Co. (BANOCO) in 1976 to administer the Government's share of BAPCO, oversee exploration concessions, and manage domestic marketing of petroleum products. The Government announced its intention to acquire 100% control of crude oil and natural gas production. CALTEX was to retain complete control of the 250,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery near Sitrah.

This paper describing the timekeeping and pay-roll methods of the Britannia raining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of nines regarding office procedures in connection with mining operations. The general office of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is located at Britannia Beach, B. C., a town of about 600 inhabitants at tidewater on the east side of Howe Sound and about 30 miles from Vancouver, B. C. The Beach, as it is locally termed, is a company town consisting largely of about 250 employees of the company and their families. Here is the milling and concentrating plant of over 6,000 tons daily capacity- the main service units comprising the electrical, mechanical, blacksmith and woodworking shops and the local electric-furnace foundry; the central-heating steam plant; the air and electric generating units; the ball-manufacturing plant; the warehouses; and the general store, which serves this community and also acts as distributor for the general stores located elsewhere on the property.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored new methods and technology for extracting coal from the Appalachian Mountain region of the Eastern United States. These methods were aimed at extracting coal from thin seams and focused on the use of "roof-fall-tolerant" (RFT) mining concepts. These methods could be used on existing, abandoned highwalls or in conjunction with new highwall mining. The research was conducted using small-scale and quasi-full-scale physical models to obtain experimental results. Details are provided on (1) the quasi-full-scale model for cross-ridge mining, (2) the quasi-full-scale model for down-ridge mining, (3) the test results of these models, and (4) recommendations for future research. Significant results include demonstration of the RFT concept, a discussion of expected coal produced from these methods, and recommendations for future research.

WHILE methods of utilizing blast-furnace slag have been developing, a great deal of literature on the subject has accumulated, but no comprehensive summary of information that would be helpful to engineers, contractors, architects, chemists, and others in under-standing and more successfully using this byproduct of the iron and steel industry has been published in the English language. The National Slag Association recognized the need for such a publication, and the Problems Committee of the Association under-took in 1943 to accumulate the necessary material. Over a period of several years this committee compiled pertinent information in manuscript form, and in 1948 the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association made an agreement whereby the Bureau was to prepare the data for publication as a cooperative bulletin of the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association.

Reduce the number of accidents in which large mining trucks crush objects that were not visible to the driver. Approach Improved rear view mirrors, light-bending plastic lenses, and a closed circuit TV, are combined in a rugged system that allows the driver to see almost all areas around a large raining truck. How It Works Improved mirrors, used in place of ordinary left and right rear view mirrors, give wider angle viewing. Fresnel lenses, two mounted on the front edge of the hood and another one mounted above the right front fender, show objects close to the front and right side of the truck. A rugged closed circuit TV camera mounted above the rear axle reveals objects behind the truck. See diagrams showing reduction of blind area around a 150-ton mining truck. The improved mirrors for rear viewing are approximately rectangular. The left rear view mirror has a flat reflecting surface 10 inches wide by 20 inches high. The right rear view mirror is curved to give wider viewing angles, both from left to right and up and down. This mirror is 12 inches wide by 16 inches high. Coal pillar design has been based on generalized formulas of the strength of the coal in a pillar and experience in localized situations. Stress measurements above and in coal pillars indicate that the actual strength and deformation of pillars vary much more than predicted by formulas. This variation is due to failure of strata surrounding coal. The pillar strength and deformation of the adjacent roadways is a function of failure in the coal and the strata about the coal. When the pillar is viewed as a system in which failure also occurs inthe strata rather than the coal only, the wide range of pillar strength characteristics found in the United Kingdom, United States, Republic of South Africa, Australia, People's Republic of China, Japan, and other countries are simply variations due to different strata-coal combinations, not different coal strengths. This paper presents the measured range of pillar strength characteristics and explains the reasons. Methods to design pillar layouts with regard to the potential strength variations due to the strata strength characteristics surrounding the seam are also presented.

"INTRODUCTION.Street manholes for underground power and signal circuits, and for sewers vary in size from small openings that a workman can enter, to large central vaults. As the gas hazards in manholes are similar to those in mines, the mine safety committee of the Bureau of Mines was asked whether the miners' flame safety lamp is a practicable device for indicating inflammable gases in manholes.The coal miner detects firedamp (methane or CH4) with his flame safety lamp by observing the luminous can or the increased length of flame that appears when 1.5 per cent or more of the combustible gas is present. The lamp flame also warns him of lack of oxygen by going out when the oxygen becomes less than 16 to L7 per cent. A tentative rule regarding the proposed use of safety lamps at manholes has been suggested previously as follows: ""Testing for gas: Do not enter manholes until you have .assured yourself that the manholes are free from dangerous gases, by testing with an approved safety lamp, by ventilation, or by other adequate methods."" The Bureau's committee recommended that miners' flame safety lamps are not suitable,testing in manholes because hydrogen gas may be formed therein. The flame safety lamps approved by the Bureau of Mines for use in aseous mines are safe in presence of methane and while not tested against the members of the paraffin hydrocarbon series (CnH2n+2) higher than methane they been have been used therein; the lamps should not be used in hydrogen or acetylene they can initiate explosions in presence of these gases."

Mercury deposits were discovered in 1941 in the sedimentary rocks of the Cinnabar Crook area, near the head of the Holitna River drainage in southwestern Alaska, by Russell Schaefer and Harvey Wincholl of Sloitmut, Alaska. High-grade float was found in both Canary Gulch and Cinnabar Gulch, and indications of other deposits wore found in Aldor and Broken Shovel Gulches. Schaefer and Winchell's exploration in 1942 and 1943 revealed placer deposits of cinnabar along Canary Gulch. During prospecting on Canary Gulch, 3,600 pounds of ore was recovered from the detrital material on the Lucky Day lode at the head of the gulch. When retorted, this ore was reported by the owners to have produced 26 flacks of quicksilver. During the summer of 1943, Wallace M. Cady and Charles A. Hickcox, of the U. S. Geological Survey, spent 4 weeks mapping and investigating the area. Bruce I. Thomas and Harold C. Pierce, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, examined and sampled several deposits in September 1943. Following their preliminary examination, in view of the exceptionally high-grade cinnabar present, additional investigation by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. A program of trenching, test pitting, and sampling to delimit the deposits was completed during the summer of 1947 under the direction of the author.

These investigations were undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines program for the development and evaluation of high temperature nonmetallic materials. This report consists of thermal expansion and phase inversion measurements by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry on the principal oxides of beryllium (BeO), calcium (CaO), titanium (TiO2 ), zirconium (ZrO2 ), hafnium (HfO2), and thorium (ThO2); all were high-purity commercially available oxides. Thermal expansion values were calculated from unit cell dimensions measured at selected temperatures. Expansion was determined parallel to each major crystallographic axis for the anisotropic oxides: BeO, TOi2, ZrC2, and HfO2. Combined random and systematic errors in the thermal expansion values are considered to be less than 3 percent of the total expansion at 500° C. and approximately 2 percent at 1,000° C. No hysteresis in the expansion curves was noted between heating and cooling cycles. The Bureau's values were compared with published expansion measurements obtained by X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, interferometric, and telemicroscopic techniques. For anisotropic oxides, average linear expansion values were calculated from the volume expansion.

"INTRODUCTION During peacetime, the United States uses less than 3,000 tons of chemical-grade celestite annually. The war need, however, was estimated to exceed 15,000 tons a year.Hitherto; most of the required chemical-grade ore has been imported from England, Mexico, and other foreign countries. If foreign sources do not find it possible to meet the demand for ore of chemical grade (plus 92 percent SrSO4), it is expected that requirements could be satisfied by concentrating low-grade domestic ores. Celestite deposits on Brown, Nolan, Fisher, and Coke Counties, Texas, are considered to be possible sources of supply for this low-grade material. The Bureau of Mines explored the most important deposits to determine the grade and amount of ore available and conducted ore-dressing tests to obtain a suitable method of concentration.The exploratory work, consisting of test pitting and sampling, was carried on under the direction of W. E. Dennis, one of the authors of this paper, from October 8, 1942, to January 30, 1943. The ore dressing-tests described herein were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Laboratory at Rolla Mo.In this report, a particular deposit is referred to by the name of the landowner on whose .property the .deposit lies. The location of the deposits investigated is shown on figures 1, 2, 3, and 4.The celestite deposits were previously studied by the Bureau of Economic Geology of the University of Texas, and the results of its investigation are published in Mineral Survey Circular No. 46."

The Bureau of Mines drilled and sampled the more important magnesite deposits in the Currant Creek Mining District, White Pine County, Nev. The properties of the Ala-Mar Magnesium Co., Inc., and the Nevada Magnesite Co. were examined in August 1942 by D. W. Butner, engineer of the Bureau of Mines, to determine the advisability of investigating the deposits under the strategic minerals program. Development involving diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling was started September 1, 1942, and was completed in the latter part of November 1942. The deposits are on unsurveyed public land in T. 12N., B. 59 E., M.D.B.&M., in an area of high relief ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet in altitude. Both properties are situated northwest of the Tonopah-Ely Highway, U.S. Highway 6, from which a dirt road extends about 4.6 miles northwesterly, about 35 miles southwest of Ely, to the Ala-Mar property, and another dirt road extends about 10 miles westerly, about 26 miles southwest of Ely, to the Nevada Magnesite property. The magnesite occurs as irregular nodules, veins, and lenses in a bedded calcareous tuff formation, which overlies a group of volcanic rocks, and which is capped by remnants of rhyolite flows.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two largest oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana. Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years, and although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.
