THE Magdalen islands have recently been attracting attention as a possible source of manganese. As early as 1880 small masses of manganese oxides were known to occur in the soil and at least one attempt was made to develop them. In 1939, after the outbreak of war, interest in the possibilities of the field was again aroused and during the winter of 1939-40 claims were taken up by two groups of Toronto interests. The islands also contain large quantities of gypsum. During the summer of 1940, the writer mapped the islands geologically, giving particular attention to a study of the manganese occurrences. For a base-map, the chart of the islands was enlarged to a scale of half a mile to an inch. Additional roads were added from traverses carried out in connection with the geological work, and form lines with approximate 100-foot intervals were put on from barometer readings. The geological map is the first that has been prepared of the islands. Previous Work In the summer of 1880, James Richardson of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the rocks of the islands and his r~port concerning them appears as Part G of the Report of Progress, 1879-80. In 1903, J. Obalski, Inspector of Mines for the Department of Lands, Mines and Fisheries of the Province of Quebec, visited the islands, chiefly to investigate the occurrences of manganese and gypsum, and his notes are found in the report on mining operations in the Province for that year. Around 1890, Robert Chalmers of the Geological Survey paid a visit to the islands, and his observations, which chiefly concerned the surface geology, appear in the Annual Report of the Survey, Vol. VII, 1894, Part M, p. 94. The next geological work was carried out by John M. Clarke, Director of the New York State Geological Survey. Clarke paid many visits to Gaspé peninsula between the years 1900 and 1920, collecting fossils and gathering h1s~orical data, and extended his investigations of Gaspé county over to the Magdalens. His Observations on the Magda/en Islands is included in the New York State Museum Bulletin 149, seventh report of the Director, 1910.

"Hecla Limited’s No. 4 Shaft at the Lucky Friday Mine is the largest capital expenditure in the corporation’s 128-year history and is considered the deepest shaft in the United States. This paper will discuss the project’s history and lessons learned from the initial conceptual design work in 2007 through project commissioning in 2017. Change management was key for the owner, contractors, and vendors in delivering the operational and organizational success on the project. The No. 4 Shaft has extended the life of the Lucky Friday Mine by 21 years to 2039. INTRODUCTION The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest active (77 years) and deepest mine in the Coeur d’Alene mining district, producing approximately 725 tonnes (800 tons) per day from narrow, vertical, silver, lead, and zinc veins. Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the deepest mines in the western hemisphere. No. 4 Shaft is a 5.5-metre (18-foot) diameter, concrete lined circular shaft, constructed as a 1.2 km (3,860 feet) deep winze in the Lucky Friday Mine. The 2.4 m (8 ft.) diameter, double drum, double clutch, Siemag hoist and associated headworks are situated at the 4760 level, top station at 4940 and shaft stations at 5900, 6500, 6580, 7500, 7580, 8300, 8380, 8500, and 8620. Shaft stations reference depth below Silver Shaft top station. The 4 Shaft was designed, constructed and commissioned over ten years, between 2007 and 2017. Basic design work was completed by Nordmin Engineering, followed by detailed design completed by Cementation Canada. Shaft construction was awarded to Cementation USA and lateral development was initiated in early 2008. Over the course of the next nine years, the project was suspended and restarted twice, dealt with the loss of a miner, added scope including shaft depth and mine infrastructure facilities, experienced squeezing ground that required liner replacement, changed excavation section, and dealt with a final alignment that was not within design requirement for verticality. Hecla and Cementation were successful in delivering a facility that provides fully functional access from collar at 4940 level to shaft bottom at the 8620 level. Two active mining levels below the collar, 5900 and 6500 are accessed. In addition, the shaft provides access to the future mining level at 7500, skip loading facility at 7580 level, station and loading pocket cutouts at 8300 and 8380 levels, spill pocket at 8500 level, and shaft bottom pumping facility at 8620 level (Figure 2)."

"Best practice in the economic evaluation of mining projects and operations is based on the integration of geological, mining, metallurgical, environmental, marketing, economic and corporate information and strategies. Fundamentally, the economic evaluation takes into account mining, blending, stockpiling, processing, smelting, refining and marketing ore resources with grades estimated by geostatistical methodologies.Nevertheless, a realistic economic evaluation consists of a concurrent and integrated optimization process that maximizes the concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals from mineral deposits. The optimum solution is obtained through a trade-off among mining, blending, stockpiling and processing ore reserves with distinct mineralogy and texture characteristics. The concurrent optimization determines both the practical mining sequence of ore reserves and the dynamic and robust mineral processing flowsheet design over the expected life of mining projects and operations.A combined risk-adverse and concurrent optimization process takes into account the spatial uncertainty of the mineralogy and texture characteristics of ore reserves. Additionally, a variety of mineral processing linear, non-linear, additive and non-additive parameters modeled spatially. The spatial uncertainty of these ore reserves characteristics and parameters has a direct impact in the expected mining sequence, mineral processing flowsheet design, concentrates or products quantity and quality, and economic value of mining projects and operations.Geometallurgical domain constrained stochastic geostatistical methodologies and multivariate mathematical models are applied for spatial uncertainty modeling of ore reserves characteristics and parameters. These mathematical models correlate the mineral processing liberation and selectivity responses of the mineralogy and textures within each geometallurgical domain. These models, in turn, are defined based on results of mineral processing and environmental testwork of unbiased and representative samples chosen for their variability. These samples are selected within mutually exclusive spatial geometallurgical uncertainty domains with similar mineralogical and textural characteristics in mineral deposits.Geometallurgical domains are defined by applying and combining multivariate statistical analysis and implicit modeling methodologies. These involve determining and constraining mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties explicitly contained in the extensive and integrated exploration drillhole database."

"Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. The degree of accuracy relative to plant mill operation depends upon how representative the sample is of the total mill feed.The results of the Bond closed circuit rod and ball mill grindability tests (3) are given in grams of product sized material produced per revolution of the test mill. In developing a method to evaluate plant operating data and results from his grindability test, Fred Bond developed the ""Third Theory of Comminution."" The young field of nanotechnology has as its objective the design and construction of useful devices made of nanoscale materials. Objects or structures which have at least one important dimension in the range 0.5 to perhaps 50 nm may be considered to be in the nanoscale domain. These sizes lie far below the 200 nm or so that can be resolved with an optical microscope, and are closer in size to the 0.3 nm diameter of individual atoms. Nanotechnology, which is the study and exploitation of these tiny structures, is attracting keen interest at present. The excitement is motivated by the observation that control of matter at the nanoscale holds the promise of faster computing, better medicines, and smarter materials. In this paper, the physical phenomena on which this optimism is based are broadly discussed and explained. Where appropriate, examples of the rather different and curious properties of gold at the nanoscale are used to illustrate the points covered.

"A new mineral sands operation is being developed in Georgia by Southern Ionics, Inc. (SII). Prevailing mineralogy and certain design constraints required detailed testing and circuit analysis to create a robust separation processes. The floating wet concentrator plant (WCP) and mineral separation plant (MSP) flow sheets were designed based on historical testing information and recent SII test campaigns on various composite feed samples. The flow sheets were finalized through rigorous process and orebody sequence modeling.The process uses traditional physical separation equipment; however a new MT spiral, the MG12, was selected for use on board the WCP for roughing duty. The MG12 spiral is a two-stage, twelve-turn spiral that has been proven to achieve very high recoveries of heavy minerals. The floating plant includes feed desliming operations, a central MT surge bin for optimum spiral circuit feed control and ancillary operations for concentrate and tailings handling. Scrubbed heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is then transported to the MSP for concentration of the titanium and zirconium bearing mineral fractions.The testing, flowsheet development, and plant design will be described and explained, and a brief summary of the current project status will be given.IntroductionSouthern Ionics Inc. (SII) is a privately held chemical manufacturing company, founded in 1980 by Milton Sundbeck. SII focuses primarily on the sale of specialty and intermediate inorganic chemicals. Hydrogen fuel cells are a known technology, having been applied to stationary (e.g. equipment, buildings, and power plants) and vehicle applications (e.g. transit buses and space shuttles). There is currently a growing need to provide alternate power systems to diesel fuel for underground mining vehicles to improve underground air quality and reduce production costs and greenhouse gas emissions. To date, however, fuel cells have not been exposed to underground mine air and physical conditions. A testing program was carried out to provide information on the vulnerabilities of fuel cells as part of a number of proof-of-concept projects to apply hydrogen power to underground mining vehicles. The fuel cell type of choice for the industry, the proton exchange membrane, would function at the range of surface operations, and use hydrogen that is stored under low pressure and risk. A small fuel cell stack was tested in a cooperative project between CANMET, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, Inco, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Sandia National laboratories, and H-Power. This article will review the tests carried out to measure the effects from high humidity, mineral dust, diesel emission gasses and diesel particulate matter, as well as from shock and vibration provided to the unit in underground conditions at Inco?s 175 Orebody minesite and Stobie mine. The test results provided will show that the unit was not affected by the underground conditions; physically and electrically, the unit performed without any reduction in operation or adverse effects imposed

"""Pilot Plant Operations"" is a final-year core course given to the Metallurgy and Materials Science students at the University of Toronto. This course involves a laboratory study of an industrial project at an industrial site. Details of this program are discussed and reviewed after eight years of experience. IntroductionEducators in the field of Metallurgy and Materials Science have long agreed that ""hands-on"" experience is an important component in the education of metallurgical engineers. This philosophy is reflected in the undergraduate curricula of most metallurgical schools. The major problems encountered with laboratory-associated courses are the requirements for equipment, space and funds for both purchase and maintenance of equipment. For example, consider an exercise in crushing and grinding treatment in a mineral processing laboratory. Such operations require the handling of tons of material and often equipment of large size. The problems of storage of ore, methods of handling and maintenance of equipment are a few of the concerns facing the department. Considering that metallurgical departments at universities are, in general, relatively small, the support to purchase and maintain largescale equipment becomes an annual budgetary concern. In reality, universities today are not geared to operate mini-pilot plant equipment, either in terms of space or personnel.For the above reasons, in 1972an undergraduate core course called ""Pilot Plant Operations"" was introduced to the fourth year curriculum in Metallurgy and Materials Science at the University of Toronto. This course consists of I to 2 full weeks (8 hrs per day) of pilot plant laboratory study at an industrial site on a project of mutual interest with the industrial organization whose facility is being used. The first 5 years of the program were carried out at the pilot plant facility at the Ontario Research Foundation; Stelco's Research Centre in Burlington, Ontario, was used for the last 3 years. The nature of the projects undertaken during the 8-year period is shown in Table 1."

The polyurethane used in Tyrethane® Products will be compounded in a variety of chemistries and different heat treatments will be used to develop best mechanical properties to handle specific applications. It is rarely necessary to modify the screening equipment to enable you to install the Tyrethane® Product although it may be desirable to take some steps to improve the service life of hold down components such as Clamping Strips or Tension Members. Those parts can be encapsulated in polyurethane if necessary.To fabricate the Tyrethane® section we have three basic building blocks. They are: (1) Small molded segments having square or slotted openings, (2) Reinforcing material and (3) the raw liquid polyurethane."

The zinc pressure leach plant at HBM&S's operations is now in its fifteenth year of operation. Current pressure leach operation is steady at a concentrate processing rate of around 26.5 tonnes per hour. A new cellhouse with a design capacity of 124,000 tonnes per annum and the capability of expansion of up to 154,000 tonnes per annum was commissioned in July 2001. The potential to expand the capacity of the pressure leach circuit and associated processes, as well as the purification circuit and casting plant, to meet the maximum capacity of the cellhouse has been investigated. This paper reviews current operation of the zinc plant, as well as the possibility of a capacity increase without major process modifications or major capital expenditures.

"The development of on-stream analyzers (OSA), such as those based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF), has been key to improve metallurgical performance of flotation processes. However, since these analyzers are shared between several streams, they typically provide grade measurements every about 10-15 minutes. In general, this frequency is too long compared to process dynamics and so, implementing an efficient feedback control strategy based on OSA can be difficult. In addition, due to the limited capacity of OSA systems, several important intermediate streams are not analysed, but could provide relevant information about the state of a flotation circuit.To overcome this problem, vision systems have been developed in the past to predict concentrate grade based on froth color – this could be very useful to control flotation performance between OSA measurements. However, applications reported in the literature typically use univariate summary statistics of the full red, blue, and green color distribution of froth images, while RGB images are truly multivariate. Although, in some cases, grade prediction was achieved with reasonable accuracy, one may, by using only summary statistics, miss important information about the state of the flotation process.This paper investigates the application of Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) concepts to flotation froth images. These techniques are based on multivariate statistical methods such as PCA and PLS, which have the ability to analyze large databases (such as digital images) and summarize the relevant information content of the data into a small number of latent variables, capturing the most important features of the images for concentrate grade prediction. The potential of application of these methods in the mineral processing industry is illustrated using a few industrial case studies."

Barrick Goldstrike mine utilizes a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit to simultaneously leach gold into solution with cyanide and adsorb the gold-cyanide complex onto activated carbon for further refinement. If the gold bearing ore contains a significant amount of native carbonaceous material, gold cyanide can be adsorbed at these sites instead of onto the desired activated carbon and the gold is effectively lost to tailings in a detrimental process known as "preg-robbing." The preg-rob effect is considerably reduced by treating the ore with a surfactant, which is hypothesized to adsorb to and passivate the native carbon surfaces. Past laboratory and pilot studies have consistently demonstrated significant gains in gold recovery after treating carbonaceous ore with surfactant. With success in bench and pilot scale testing, a plant trial was conducted at Barrick Goldstrike to evaluate the feasibility of using an alkoxylated fatty amine surfactant (Ethomeen T/12) to aid in the leaching of high preg-robbing ores. This paper analyzes the performance of the surfactant during the plant trial in addition to the problems that occurred during the trial period. Suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

"A 4-ft.-diameter shaft has been drilled to a depth of 2,790 ft. in strong, hard, basic Precambrian rocks at Lynn Lake Manitoba. This was done on the property of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for the purpose of ventilating and developing the ""N"" orebody, which is located approximately 4,000 ft. south of the Farley shaft.The drilling was done under contract by two drilling companies. Peter Bawden Drilling (1964) Limited drilled the initial 12:1,4-in. pilot hole to a depth of 3,000 ft. Shaft Drillers Limited of Canada then reamed the hole to 4 ft. in diameter to a depth of 2,790 ft. At this point, the reaming was stopped because of the difficulty in passing a change in direction in the line of the pilot hole. The hole was completed by driving a raise 200 ft. from the 3000 level to the bottom of the 4-ft. hole using an Alimak raise climber.Cuttings from the reaming operation were directed into the 12:1,4-in. pilot hole, where they fell to the 3000 level and were removed by a mucking machine and standard mine development cars.The elapsed time from the start of the pilot hole to the completion of the reaming operation was ten months, with an average advance of 279ft. per month. There was a two-month delay between the completion of the pilot hole and the start of the reaming operation.The 12:1,4-in. hole was drilled in an elapsed time of 45 days from the time of setting up the rig. The average advance per day was 66.8 ft.The reaming operation was done in an elapsed time of 194 days. A one-month delay required to repair damaged equipment left 163 days for the drilling and setting-up operation, for an advance per day of 17.1 ft."

"The Linatex Dewatering System is a compact, low capital and maintenance cost matched set of processing equipment suitable for solids recovery, dewatering and desliming sand-like materials in the range 3/8"" to 325 mesh ( 1). Since its introduction to North America in the early 1970s, various elements of the system have been successfully installed in a variety of applic11tions both in Canada and the U.S.A. Examples are chosen from the coal, fine aggregates, iron ore and industrial minerals industries.II. Elements of the Linatex Solids Recovery System(A) The Linatex Separator (See Fig.I)The Linatex Separator, which is the heart of the system, is a specialized type of hydrocyclone designed to give a self regulating rope discharge product. It has the familiar cyclone geometry of cylindrical and conical section, tangential inlet, apex and vortex finder. The apex is enclosed in a unique patented automatic underflow regulator consisting of a collapsible rubber sleeve, and the overflow line is a siphon-leg, with a controlled air bleed valve. The siphon leg is adjusted so as to balance the internal negative pressure acting as a closing force on the underflow regulator against the mass of slurry pressing down on it from the cone section of the Separator. With correct adjustment the underflow regulator will close drip-tight on a water only feed. As solids accumulate in the apex of the cone the weight of solids counterbalances the vacuum and cat1ses the underflow regulator to open and discharge classified material at a controlled density."

This paper introduces the development and application of a new cable anchor - Cable-Lok for pre-stressed cable bolting in mines. Cable-Lok is a spring-loaded cable anchor suitable for the drill hole diameter of 50 and 65 mm (2" and 2.5") in medium soft rock to hard rocks. The cable anchor is automatically set on installation and the cable can be tensioned immediately to provide active and primary support throughout its length. Post-grouting can be conducted independently. In comparison with the conventional cable bolting, Cable-Lok anchor will greatly speed-up the cable bolting circle and decreases the cost of cable bolting. Cable bolting anchored with Cable-Lok anchor has wide application in mines, e.g. pre-stressed cable bolting in large span drifts and intersections for permanent rock support, or in hanging walls or stopes for temporary support, or cable lace anchoring etc. This paper introduces the principle of pre-stressed cable bolting and the specifications of the Cable-Lok anchor, presented the testing results in laboratory and the application cases in mines.

"Ore sorting has been quite successful in providing a separation means in the rock size range of 1 to 6 inches; a range where mineral dressers do not have many options. The industrial minerals and recycling worlds have embraced this technology. However, ore sorting has not found wide application in the base or precious metals mining industry. One reason for this is thought to be the reliance of most sensors on rock surface characteristics, not very useful in case of sulphides, non-existing in case of gold. Microwave heating, however, is specific for sulphides and graphite (or carbonaceous matter) embedded in the rocks; washing or even drying does not appear necessary. Separation can be done afterwards by already existing ore sorting technology using infrared sensors. Test results on six Nevada gold ore samples are presented in detail. Some simple test procedures are also presented for those wishing to explore the microwave potential of sulphide sorting in their own operations.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing in the base metals industry most often involves upgrading of the ore, concentrating the valuable mineral fraction by classic methods, such as flotation. Since the liberation of minerals in the ore occurs mostly at or below the 100 micron level, the industry has been living with fault lines, so to speak, between blast hole spacing (10,000 mm), run-of-mine ore size (100 mm) and beneficiation size (0.1 – 0.01 mm). The acceptance of ore sorting will inevitably lead to the revisiting of the following questions: “Exactly how much below ore grade rock ends up in the mill because the geologists or the miners cannot define the resource boundaries more precisely? How can the economics of dilution be improved? How many ore grade rocks are lost with the overburden?”"

A brief outline covering the shovels and draglines in use in the open-pit mines of Western Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon, is given, followed by the procedure for the selection of the correct wire rope for each application. Such fa ctors as wire rope constructions, lay directions and types of cores are mentioned. Once the correct wire rope has been selected, there are variousfactors that can affect the service fife ofthe rope and the reduction ofdown-time during rope change-overs. Factors such as hairpin winding, types of Becket loops, and shovel drum and bail adaptors are described.

In 1995, Louvicourt mine started one of the first paste backfill operations in Canada. From 500 000 t in 1995, the annual paste backfill tonnage produced reached 800 000 t in 1999. The maximum throughput of the surface plant (including binders) is 3500 tpd with a final density of 75% to 76% solids which gives a slump of 15 cm to 17 cm. Following the start-up of the paste backfill plant, the backfill strength performance levels were well below the pilot plant’s predictions. The introduction of ferrous slag, laboratory tests on various binder ratios with or without additives, and the desliming of the tailings enabled us to optimize the mix and operation costs. Primary and secondary stopes are filled respectively with a paste containing 4.5% and 2% binders in a mixture of 20% cement to 80% ferrous slag. In certain stopes, the binder ratio may vary from 2% to 7%, but always in a ratio of 80/20. Six years after start-up, or 4.5 Mt of paste backfill later, this paper discusses the present operation and the major changes that have occurred over the years to optimize both the operation and the paste fill quality.
