The attrition-leaching process aims at improving leaching performance when formation of passivation layers at the surface of leached particles is a severe limiting factor, as discussed recently by Julcour and coworkers (Julcour et al., 2015). This paper proposes a geochemistry-based modelling scheme for deriving the window of possible operating conditions for the attrition-leaching process to match the properties of the processed ore. The rationale is that the attrition-leaching process maintains the surface of reacting particles in an unpassivated state by continuous mechanical removal of surface leach layers, so that the process reactions can be modelled from thermodynamic equilibria throughout the duration of the process. The strength of the proposed modelling approach is that it bridges the gap between the properties of the ore and the process operating conditions. The present paper exemplifies the proposed process modelling route for derivation of the attrition-leaching process operating conditions in the context of the leaching of silicate ores, matching model predictions against controlled laboratory experiments. It is shown how thermodynamic modelling, when used in conjunction with a solid knowledge of the phases present in the system, can assist with deciding upon suitable process operating conditions. As an example, this firstprinciple modelling approach predicted that steel grinding medium would be converted into siderite (FeCO3) under a wide range of operating conditions, which led to questioning this initial choice of grinding medium for the attrition-leaching process under mineral carbonation conditions. It is emphasised that the same approach could be applied to ores of greater economic significance.

"The Malartic gold camp includes the Malartic Gold Fields, Barnat, East-Malartic, Canadian Malartic and Sladen mines. From 1935 to 1984, these mines have yielded 212 403 kg of gold. They occur within a 900 m wide belt of highly sheared, dislocated and faulted volcanic and sedimentary rocks (Piché and part of the Pontiac groups) herein named the Malartic Tectonic Znne (MTZ). The zone trends WNW-ESE and separates two lithotectonic sedimentary domains, the Cadillac to the north and the Pontiac to the south. The sedimentary domains are characterized by their coherent fold generations consisting of open to tight reclined and recumbent F1 folds that have been refolded into series of asymmetric upright F2 folds. A flat-lying schistosity (S1 ) and a vertical pressure-solution cleavage (S2) are ubiquitous throughout. Discrete sets of brittle and brittleductile faults are synchronous and parallel to each of these two fabrics.The MTZ trends N320° in the northwestern sector of the town of Malartie, changing to N2800 at its easternmost extremity. The Malartie and Sladen faults constitute its northern and southern boundaries respectively. These two faults also bound another set of faults oriented N305°. Throughout the MTZ, the faults at N280° and N320° and those at N305° outline a series of anastomosed motifs that constitute the principal structural feature of the Malartic district. Locally, a fourth set of minor faults at N065° combines with the other three prominent sets. All these faults have disrupted the gold-bearing volcanic, sedimentary and intrusive rocks encountered throughout the MTZ.The MTZ comprises numerous lozenge-shaped blocks of komatiites and basalts or greywackes and black shales which are cut by disjointed dikes, sills and small intrusions of felsic and mafic rocks. The latter includes gabbro, diorite, lamprophyre, monzonite and pegmatite. They frequently fill conjugate sets of fractures. In some areas, they are clustered into coalescent intrusions. The present morphology of these intrusive bodies( cube, chocolate-tablet boudin, parallel epiped and cigar) is not representative of their primary forms but the result of late shearing and faulting indicative of a major tectonic event subsequent to their emplacement. The intrusions were injected during a brittle stage of deformation related to the F1 folding but prior to the development of the F2 folds and subsequent tearing and shearing by late brittle and brittle-ductile faults . The ultramafic and mafic rocks are intensely altered to serpentine, tremolite, actinolite, carbonate, biotite, hematite and pyrite according to the nature of their proto/it h. In the vicinity of the MTZ, all lithologies exhibit mineral assemblages indicative of the upper greenschist or lower amphibolite facies of metamorphism.The structural evolution of the MTZ involved superimposed folding, shearing, transposition, mylonitization, brittle and brittle-ductile faulting. Each lenticular motif results from the combined effect of conjugate sets of shear zones that outline lozenge-shaped blocks where strain markers indicate different strain states from cores to margins. Bedding in ultramafic flows and/or sedimentary rocks is either NW-SE or NE-SW within the blocks but, in the vicinity of the Malartie and S laden faults, it has been rotated to become subparallel to the faults.Ore shoots are most commonly associated with altered and deformed bodies of diorite and monzonite, or some mafic and ultramafic schists and, at the Canadian Malartic, Sladen and East Malartic mines, with metasedimentary rocks. The shoots occur in close proximity to the various faults of the MTZ but the gold itself is intimately associated with pyrite, biotite and carbonate in halos bordering fractures crisscrossing the different host rocks. It is important to define "adequacy," and the most useful definition is a continuing availability of mineral materials under cost and other conditions which imply no significant burden on the achievement of otherwise attainable levels of consumption and well-being. For current decision making, it is sufficient to consider adequacy just to the end of the century, with some regard being given to then remaining mineral inventory. A comparison of cumulative demand projections to the year 2000 with already identified reserves ( economically recoverable amounts in known deposits) suggests little reason for concern with world adequacy of iron ore, aluminum, manganese, chromium or potash. Conservative estimates of "prospective" reserves (amounts producible at today's prices, but yet to be discovered) suggests that there are ample quantities of virtually all other mineral resources as well. A probable exception is oil and gas, of which there may be scant amounts remaining after the turn of the century. However, there is an evident sufficiency of substitute forms of energy, though it is difficult to see just where developing technology will take us. The critical questions have to do with the increasing dependence of the industrialized countries on external sources of supply , coupled with a new international politic s which complicates the problem of insuring timely development of, and access to, remaining deposits. In this context, Canada, a still mineral-rich nation, is in one of the more favorable positions.

The fishery of this section of the North Atlantic is a vital resource to which a major oil spill or blow-out would impose an intolerable burden, This means that production systems must be designed and built to be fail-safe.The experiences of mining in Bell Island and Cape Breton have shown that it is possible to operate beneath the ocean floor, and this technology may hold the key for safe, reliable and economic production, This paper attempts to define particular problems and outline possible solutions.IntroductionOUR DISCUSSION is subject to the assumption that large hydrocarbon reservoirs will be discovered in the sedimentary basin of the Labrador continental margin. The petroleum industry has not attempted to operate in a harsher area. The Labrador coastline is exposed to North Atlantic storms and icebergs year’round, Arctic pack ice occurs up to six months of each year. However, there is no doubt that, if sufficient hydrocarbon potential is outlined, development will proceed."

"IntroductionThe Maurice Bay deposit is one of a number of uranium deposits that have been found in recent years in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan (Tremblay, 1982). This deposit, along with the others, belongs to the unconformity type deposits (Beck, 1977). They are, for the most part, polymetallic, being characterized by a suite of metals which include U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, V, Ag, Au, Pt-group elements, S, As, Bi, Se, Te, and Mo, some of which, besides U, are present in economic concentrations (Amok, 1974; Ruzicka, 1975; Tapaninen, 1976; Hoeve and Sibbald, 1978; Dahlkamp, 1978). The Maurice Bay deposit was known to be a small low grade deposit in which the ore was essentially monomineralic, consisting mainly of pitchblende (Harper, 1978). However, the occurrence of trace amounts of some of the elements common in the larger polymetallic ore bodies (e.g. Key Lake, Cluff Lake D) was anticipated. Thus a lithogeochemical sampling project was undertaken in 1979 across part of the Maurice Bay deposit (Harper, 1979). Major oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, Na2O, MnO, P2O5, and TiO2) and a group of the most common trace metals (U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, As, Au, V, and Se) were analyzed to determine whether any elemental patterns (halos or depletions) could be detected which would reduce the number of pathfinder elements needed for exploration purposes. In addition to the above metals, Th was also checked because some conglomerate strata in the Maurice Bay area are known to be thorium-enriched (Harper, 1978). Only the trace metal distributions will be discussed in detail in this report.General GeologyThe Maurice Bay area is underlain by three major groups of rocks, the White Lake metamorphic complex, an unnamed granodiorite complex, and the Athabasca Group, described previously (Fig. 1; Harper, 1979). Table 1 summarizes the stratigraphic features as deduced by geological mapping and the examination of drill cores."

"Labrador City is located in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland-Labrador, approximately 965 kilometers north-east of Montreal. The mine and beneficiation complex of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, known as the Carol Project, is situated 535 metres above sea level in a climatic region characterized by cold winters and short, cool summers.HistoryThe Iron Ore Company of Canada commenced work in the area in 19 4 9' however, it was not until 1958 that the decision was made to proceed with mining operations. The ore body consists of Specular Hematite (Fe203) and Magnetite (Fe304) with small quantities of Limonite and Geothite. The average grade of the ore bodies is 39% iron.The mining facilities, crushing plant, and concentrator were in operation by the early part of 1962. In the summer of 1961, a decision was made to build a pelletizing plant adjacent to the concentrator. This plant was designed, erected and placed in operation during 1962 and the first half of 1963. Since the completion of the pelletizing plant, additional expansions to both the pellet plant and concentrator have taken place in 1967 and 1973. Today, the Carol Project has the capacity to produce 20 million tonnes of concentrate from which 10.5 million tonnes of pellets can be produced.The period 1980-85 spans a period of energy crisis, world-wide recession, and a consequent re-structuring of the North American steel industry as it struggles to survive in an arena of excess world steel making capacity, government subsidized industries, and the increasing competition from overseas and from developing countries.The media headlines over the past few years echo the woes of the industry and the strategy plans for survival of the fittest. Today's buzz words are foreign competition, steel import quotas, joint ventures, employee participation, work rules, quality, productivity, and state of the art technology."

"In projects involving resource development and plant optimization, the use of in-mine geophysics can deliver considerable benefit. The value proposition lies in using very high resolution downhole measurements to model process-plant outcomes. The calibration procedure used to convert in-situ physical properties into process engineering parameters is illustrated using two iron ore projects. Data correction was related either to orebody structure or mineral formation. The deliverable from this approach is a series of high-definition sections indicating the variability of ore delivered to a front-end separation plant and parameters for mine scheduling and stockpile design needed for maximum product yield.RÉSUMÉ Dans des projets de développement des ressources et d’optimisation de l’usine, l’utilisation de la géophysique minière peut engendrer des bénéfices considérables. "The Ferderber gold deposit is of Archean age. It consists of a series of gold-bearing quartz lenses within a shear zone that crosscuts the central part of the quartz dioritic Bourlamaque batholith. On average, this zone strikes N70E and dips 65SE. The Ferderber shear zone, which hosts the ore lenses, has been affected by a succession of tectonic events. A possible early period of brittle shear, accompanied by the formation of quartz lenses, resulted from strike slip movement along the zone. These early quartz veins were subsequently folded and boudinaged during reverse movement that accompanied a prolonged period of ductile shear. More quartz veins were emplaced in the shear zone at this time; these were also deformed by the thrusting. The latest tectonic event to affect the shear zone was a period of brittle fracture.Early dextral strike-slip movement on the shear zone is suggested by the local occurrence of Riedel shears, the preferred association of ore with east-northeast oriented segments of the zone, and by the apparent en echelon arrangement of some ore lenses. The most important event, a reverse movement, is indicatedby the attitudesoffoliation, folds, boudins, COS tectonites and slip planes. The late brittle fracturing formed narrow gouge filled faults, locally flanked by brecciazones, whichrun generally within and parallel to the shear zone, and also conjugate fractures that crosscut the zone.The Ferderber and six other adjacent gold deposits were formed in a structural regime dominated by a generally horizontal north-south regional compression. The Y axis of the strain ellipsoid is east-west and varies from horizontal to a plunge of 25 0 w."

"AbstractThis paper describes the geological procedures used to evaluate two mineable high-volatile C bituminous coal seams at Coal Valley , located in the outer foothills belt of the Rocky Mountain Eastern Slopes in west-central Alberta. Lexco Testing Ltd., the exploration arm of Luscos: Ltd., owns and operates an all -weather geophysical logging system which provides gamma, focused density , single-point resistance and caliper logs in a single pass. A mathematical analysis for a theoretical interpretation of the single-point resistance log confirms empirical research that bed boundaries are located at a point 10% from the bottom of the curve. A unique and efficient triple-tube, wireline rotary coring system cuts an undisturbed 0.076m- diameter core in a plastic liner at recoveries exceeding 90% . Although only 10% of the total footage is cored, it provides vital analytical and geotechnical data, and, when integrated with the geophysical logs, improves the quality and extends the usefulness of interpreting both sets of data. All data are programmed to produce computerized structure contour, isopach, isoratio and isoquality maps, and volume calculations.General IntroductionTHE COAL VALLEY AREA is located in the outer foothills belt of the Rocky Mountain Eastern Slopes, 60 miles (96 km) by road southwest of Edson, Alberta. Luscar Ltd. holds leases which total 49,000 acres (19,830 ha) , of which 18,300 acres (7,410 ha) have been assigned to the Coal Valley mine area (Fig. 1 ) . There are two Paleocene high-volatile C bituminous coal seams initially developed for mining within a total stratigraphic interval of 750 feet (230 m ) (Fig. 2 ). These seams strike generally NW, and in the undisturbed areas generally dip westerly from 10 to 30 degrees."

The methods of harvesting copper from stainless steel mother plates has been investigated from fundamental and operational experience perspectives. At least five different harvesting techniques have been identified that have different effects on product quality, current efficiency, current distribution, growth morphology and ease of stripping. Each method is examined from fundamental principles to understand what occurs during the harvesting process and why the particular effects are manifested. Experience from plants operating the harvesting method is provided to show that the fundamental understanding is relevant. Best practice harvesting method and harvesting management are described.

With an increase of mining depth, a series of mining-induced hazards such as rockburst, coal and gas outburst, roof collapse, and water burst are getting more serious and more frequent. The intrinsic mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards is the damage and unstable failure of rockmass or coal seam. The most distinct difference between deep and shallow levels is the so-called three ‘high’ (H3) conditions, i.e. high geo-stress, high fluid pressure and high geo-temperature. Therefore, the response of rock or coal to the deep mining operation is a phenomenon involving thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) processes. Most importantly, mining excavation may vary the rock stress condition greatly, which may be a key factor to trigger the mining-induced hazards such as rockburst. In this regard, it is of great significance to clarify the damage and failure mechanism of rock and coal under coupled THM conditions, in order to clarify the rock failure mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards. Thereafter, the mining-induced hazards cannot be predicted with confidence by considering each process independently. Of course, the requirement to include coupling of these processes depends on the specifics of the mining-induced hazards under consideration. For example, the water inrush is considered as a coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) process, in which the unstable failure of rockmass occurs under the combined contribution of geo-stress and water pressure. As for the coal mining at depth, in addition to high geo-stress and gas pressure in coal seam, the high geo-thermal condition that may greatly change the adsorption / desorption of gas and gas flow should be taken into account. Firstly, a general-purpose mathematical model for rock damage and failure process under coupled THM conditions is formulated based on damage mechanics principle, and it is solved by finite element method (FEM). In this model, the deformation and damage of rock, fluid flow and thermal transfer in rock would interact with each other, one process affects and initiation and progress of another. Then, the model is used to predict the mining-induced water outburst, where it is simulated as coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) problems. Based on the numerical simulation, the dimension of water-proof pillar is designed. Finally, the gas drainage from deep coal seam is numerically evaluated, where the coupled coal-gas interaction considering the effect of gas adsorption/desorption, gas flow in coal seam and geo-stress and geotemperature, is comprehensively taken into account. The proposed model could be used for clarifying the mechanism of mining-induced hazards in deep-level mining.

THIS paper deals with the subject of inbye power as the mechanical . engineer sees it, and invites discussion, particularly from the electrical engineer. At the outset, it will be necessary to clear the ground a little by some definite statements. In this question of compressed air versus electricity for the transmission of power and driving of machinery in underground workings, we must see that there are definite fields that compressed air on the one hand, and electricity on the other, can fill to much greater advantage than the other, and in which there can be little or no direct competition, at least for the present. It is under conditions where these fields overlap, and as to where the line must be drawn between the two, that the respective merits of each must be considered. Steam was the first means used to transmit power from the surface of a mine to drive underground machinery, and so long as distances were short and means possible to ensure fairly efficient use of the steam, and where the fire hazard was not in evidence, it gave fairly efficient service. I have in mind an instance during my own connection with the mines-a duplex pump at the shaft bottom at Princess colliery, driven by steam, and which used the steam compound and condensing; and, but for the mechanical difficulties, it was a not inefficient proposition. The steam was taken direct from the surface boiler-plant through a line down the shaft, and used directly at the pump, being in effect a straight conversion from coal to steam to work done. It was the mechanical arrangement, and failure of the pump in that direction, that led to its removal and replacement by something better in the way of an electrically driven turbine pump. Given modern mechanical arrangements, such as a steam-turbine drive on a high-speed turbine pump, and all other parts made in accordance with best practice in the art of steam generation and use, a steam-driven unit fully as economical would have been obtained. But the central electric supply station, and all that that means or promises (not always the same), turned the scale against steam.

The Mineral King Mine, owned and operated by Sheep Creek Mines is located in the Purcell mountain range of southeastern British Columbia. Production of lead and zinc concentrates commenced in 1954 some 60 years after the initial discovery. Low cost mining methods have been employed to extract 16,0C'O tons of ore monthly from large ore bodies formed by replacement in limestone. Extensive areas in the limestone are yet to be explored and success in the search for new ore bodies is anticipated.

"GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

"Dust samplers are based on different principles. The konimeter is based on the number of particles counted; mining applications are based on routine sampling; and the photometrical evaluation of samples is used after the pre-separation of particles above 5 micron by the mining konimeter. In special cases, the Draeger sampler is used for quantitative analysis. General trends are toward larger samples, concentration on a weight basis, fractionation into size groups by different techniques and an analysis of composition. Standards or TLVs already exist in all industries. Surface industries base their criteria on concentrations and quartz contents in particles below 5 micron. The mining industry uses the tyndalloscope routinely to determine concentrations; concurrent] y, the rock content, as deter-mined by ashing samples, is obtained by konimeter.Threshold limits are related to the rock content in respirable fractions and tyndallometrically determined concentrations. The TL Vs are based empirically on Landwehr's ""dust values,"" as agreed upon with the Mines Inspectorates. Recently, and in accurate sampling, dust samplers have been used that count the dust in two fractions -above and below 5 microns. Mineral composition is determined either for all minerais or just for quartz. In assessing the dust hazard by Landwehr's ""dust values,"" all minerais are taken into consideration; in coal dust sampling, however, only the quartz content is taken into account. Efforts are now being made to co-ordinate the different assessment methods, arriving at uniform MAC values in agreement with those of other countries."

"The Cordillera contains numerous porphyry deposits and prospects, many containing economic quantities of copper, molybdenum, gold and tungsten. Over the lost twenty years, different phases of exploration have been driven by individual commodity prices and new discoveries. Exploration methods have remained largely unchanged since the 1960s and 1970s with the range of techniques chosen for each situation depending on the stage of the program, the type of porphyry target and the local environment. Improvements or changes to techniques have resulted from awareness of specific features in new deposits or regional problems. During the last ten years much of the emphasis has been on the re-evaluation of known porphyry deposits with more exploration in areas previously recognized as prospective. Re-evaluation of known deposits has resulted in increased reserves, often with improved gold grade, and the discovery of new zones. Several new deposits have been discovered including gold-only deposits of probable porphyry affinity.Research related to porphyry deposits has followed trends in exploration and has been directed toward the type of deposits that have been of current interest. In addition to research on specific deposits and areas, general research related to porphyry deposits has addressed three broad themes. The first theme involves the role of tectonic processes and the nature of source regions. Although different in detail, recent tectonic models suggest that a tectonic change or hiatus may be important for the generation of metal-rich magmas from various source regions and subsequent fractionation that permits volatile saturation. The second theme is based on magmatic processes, particularly the generation of a volatile phase enriched in metals. This research supports the general orthomagmatic model for porphyry deposits and has helped to define the influence of specific variables in the generation of different types of porphyry deposits. Finally, research on alteration and mineralization has provided evidence for different types of fluids and fluid processes involved in the formation of porphyry deposits. These data also support the orthomagmatic model but indicate additional complexity in magmatic-hydrothermal systems including the role of external fluids. Although important advances have been made, research has had a limited impact on exploration.Exploration and research on deposits that occur in the peripheral and upper parts of porphyry systems have been important over the last ten years. Although considerable advances have been made, the relationship of different styles of peripheral mineralization to magmatic processes in the core of the system remains ambiguous. An improved understanding of the processes that generate zoning, peripheral mineralization, and the surrounding alteration envelopes would be beneficial to exploration."

This work describes the preparation of yttria-calcia doped-ceria precursor material, its sintering in DC and AC field methods, and characterization of sintered electrolytes with respect to the ionic conductivity. Doped precursor materials were prepared by a controlled co-precipitation process. Sintering of prepared, pelletized particulates was carried out using three different methods such as: 1) conventional; 2) spark plasma sintering; and 3) an alternating current field at 1125°C (AC assisted sintering). The mechanism involved in the conductivity improvement as a function of defect density, grain boundary area and phase stability will be discussed. INTRODUCTIONThe performance of SOFCs depends highly on the properties of materials. Subtle variations in the composition, microstructure, or density of SOFC components can considerably alter the power output capabilities of fuel cells. Early SOFCs utilized zirconia based electrolytes but efforts in lowering the operating temperatures of SOFCs have prompted investigations into several other oxygen ion conductors – often modified with dopants to either promote the formation of oxygen vacancies or to stabilize a vacancy rich high temperature phase – such as bismuth oxide, lanthanum gallate, and ceria.The transport of oxygen ions through the electrolyte first begins with diffusion into the material. While this is generally a surface kinetics phenomenon, it is safe to say that it is highly dependent on oxygen pressure and vacancy gradients. The role of the cathode in SOFCs is to reduce oxygen at the electrolyte surface creating an O2– ion gradient which induces permeation into the material. Once inside and under the influence of a potential field, O2– ions migrate by a vacancy hopping mechanism, Catlow, C.R.A. (1990), effectively exchanging positions throughout the matrix until they reach the anode and react, thus leaving the matrix."

"Shales are highly anisotropic in their mechanical behavior. The strength ( ??1) of anisotropic shales depends not only on the magnitude of the other two principal stresses ( ??2, ??3), but also on the bedding plane orientations (?) relative to the principal stresses. In this study, the role of the intermediate stress ( ??2) on the strength of shale is evaluated using new data from triaxial compression and extension tests. To understand the failure behavior of shales, we have carried out triaxial compression tests ( ??1 > ??2 = ??3) on two organic rich mudstones, at different confining stresses and loading angles. We first fit the triaxial compression data with Jaeger’s plane-of-weakness model, and find that the model is able to represent the strength behavior of anisotropic shales reasonably well. We then carried out five triaxial extension tests ( ??1 = ??2 > ??3) for a high strength-anisotropy shale, and two extension tests for a low strength-anisotropy shale. Results from the compression and extension tests for failure along the weak plane shows that the role of ??2 is not significant for weak plane failure. However, for the low strength-anisotropy shale, the failure strength of the intact rock (i.e., at ??= 0o and 90o) for compression and extension tests were significantly different. This indicates that for intact rock failure, the role of ??2 is important and cannot be ignored.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, various researchers have studied the roles of ??2 for failure of isotropic rocks. (Mogi, 1967 and 2007; Colmenares and Zoback, 2002; Al-Ajmi and Zimmerman, 2005 and 2006; Haimson, 2009; Ma and Haimson, 2012). The findings from these studies show that the effect of ??2 on the strength of isotropic rocks is generally significant, and cannot be ignored.Since the role of ??2 in the failure of isotropic rocks was recognized, other researchers attempted to extend some of these isotropic failure criteria to anisotropic rocks, but with limited success (e.g., Tiwari & Rao, 2007; Singh et al., 1998; Zhang and Zhu, 2007; Pei, 2008). Smith and Cheatham (1980), on the other hand, conducted true-triaxial experiments on the Green River Shale and used a J2-I1 type relationship to predict the strength behavior, but without considering the effect of the three-dimensional orientation of the weak plane on strength. Therefore, unlike for the case of isotropic rocks, additional studies need to be done to determine the role of 2 on the failure of anisotropic rocks."

Introduction An apparatus that will measure the surface area of a few of the simple minerals with a high degree of accuracy has been described by J. W. Bell (1). His apparatus consisted essentially of a photometric device that would measure the turbidity of fine particle suspensions. Turbidity, in this case, was considered as a function of surface area. Bell's method of surface area determination seemed to offer possibilities of extension and improvement to the point where it might approach a general method of particle size measurement. Theoretical and Practical Considerations of the Photometric Method In order to illustrate how turbidity may be considered as a function of average particle size, and to indicate the type of results expected from a photometric method of particle size measurement involving turbidity, the following theory may be hypothecated. Simulation techniques have offered significant boosts toward a cost-and-time-optimized planning of construction projects by enabling project managers to effectively comprehend the behavior of projects. Using historic data from projects of like nature, simulation considers uncertainties involved in a project through accommodating the stochastic modeling parameters. However, the heavy reliance on the statistical data and not taking into account the context-specific features of the project cause the degradation in the realism and accuracy of the simulation models. Similarly, the extent to which a historic pattern could be retrofitted to new projects will decrease in line with the growing uniqueness of the projects and the novelty of construction methods. Furthermore, the existing real-time simulation frameworks are not capable of distinguishing the transient environmental changes, with minimal long-term impacts on the productivity, from the influential changes that will greatly impact an operation. In addition, existing simulation tools are devoid of location awareness, resulting in the inability to consider safety threats in their representation of the project. To address these issues, this research proposes a framework based on the integration of new tracking technologies used in Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) with simulation-driven 4D modeling methods. The proposed framework automates the adjustment of the simulation model based on the updated data from the site, and thus transforms simulation from a predictive tool used at the planning phase to a proactive monitoring platform usable throughout the planning and construction phases. A prototype is developed to test and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
