"Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Les mésocosmes des marais artificiels traitant des eaux usées, contenant du chrome hexavalent (Cr(VI)), exposés à des champs magnétiques de faible intensité (60 Hz, 56,5 × 10-6 Tesla) ont produit 100 % plus de biomasse que le contrôle non exposé. "As rock engineering moves from continuum to more discontinuum approaches for modeling, the engineer must make decisions regarding the degree of complexity to simulate for a given application, balancing the level of structural detail within the rockmass model with computational cost and result accuracy. It is important to consider that model does not need to include all the existent fractures and that representative geometrical properties for a given rock mass volume can be defined including only major structural entities.Within this paper, the scale-dependency associated with the geometrical properties of fractured rock is investigated utilizing a Synthetic Rockmass (SRM) approach with a view to characterize such ground to aid in the design of geotechnical works. In terms of process, the concept of the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) is used to determine the equivalent structural properties of the rockmass in order to justify the applicability of far-field behaviour of such ground. A large size Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) measuring 60m x 60m x 60m has been generated using the structural data obtained from LiDAR scanning of the Brockville Tunnel, Ontario, Canada. A number of DFN samples of varying sizes are extracted from the master network, generated using MoFrac, in order to be used as a the basis of the structural analysis of the rockmass. Volumetric measurements for the density and the intensity of jointing are employed in order to approximate the geometrical REV for the networks.In this paper a complete methodology of how to generate a DFN from LiDAR data and its analysis in order to determine the size of a geometrical REV is demonstrated. For the specific rockmass found in the area of the Brockville Tunnel, a geometrical REV measuring 3.5m x 3.5m x 7m is established. The results are generally in good agreement with the in-situ observations."

"Sensor-based sorting technologies have potential to pre-concentrate low grade subeconomic ores through discarding the barren waste particles. However, the inability of sensors to accurately discriminate ore from waste is a barrier to prevent their wide applications. The present study focuses on the development of more intelligent sensing systems by using correlation and regression analysis of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor responses on the copper ore samples obtained from Chile. The responses obtained through XRF scanning were reported both in the form of counts and the grades of elements. Linear and multiple linear correlation analyses were made between the XRF counts and the copper grades obtained through chemical analysis. Both the heterogeneity of the ore particles and the matrix effect in the XRF measurement are discussed in the study.INTRODUCTIONSorting can not only discard waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recover metal bearing ore particles that would be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include reduced energy consumption, water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Knapp, Neubert, Schropp, & Wotruba, 2014; Kobzev, 2014; Lessard, de Bakker, & McHugh, 2014; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013). X-ray fluorescence belongs to sensor-based sorting technologies and Xrays are a high energy-high frequency form of electromagnetic radiation inhabiting the region between the ultraviolet radiation and gamma rays (Shackley, 2011). Recent XRF sorting studies on low grade copper ores were carried out at MineSense Technologies Ltd. aimed at increasing the capacity related to improving the understanding of ore heterogeneity as the basis for developing semi-bulk or bulk sorting systems (MineSense Technologies Ltd., 2016)."

DURING the summer of 1953, test work commenced at the Sullivan Concentrator with a view to the modification of filtration practice by the inclusion of wet cyclone classification of the lead concentrates, with separate filtration of the underflow and overflow products. Formerly, practice was conventional and the equipment employed comprised one 50-foot diameter thickener ?with the underflow routed via a 20-foot stock tank to two 8-foot by 12-foot Oliver filters. Heating of the filter feeds to 40° C. and the use of mechanical slappers on the filter drums ?have both been standard features of Sullivan practice for years. Both of these have been retained. Currently (February, 1956), lead concentrates are being classified into sands and slimes by 12-inch cyclones with the underflow, at 75 per cent solids, being fed to No. 1 Oliver filter. The overflow is thickened to 75 per cent solids and filtered separately by a No. 2 Oliver filter . The tonnage split is approximately two of underflow to one of overflow. The overflow contains 75 to 80 per cent of the total minus I 500 mesh slimes in the feed.

"With rapid deterioration in the urban environment caused by air pollution, the possibility of chemical reaction between dimension stone and the industrial waste gases present in the ambient atmosphere remains. The chemical reaction can cause expensive damage to building stone; it is essential that a stone evaluation for use in construction should assess the possibility of this type of decay. This paper endeavours to develop testing procedures for evaluating stone decay in polluted environments. Such tests can accompany other standard tests used in dimension- stone evaluation."

The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

The Star Lake property, located 115 km northeast of La Ronge, Saskatchewan is underlain by metamorphosed andesitic tuffs and flows which have been intruded by the dioritic to granitic Star Lake Pluton. Gold mineralization on the Star Lake property was first discovered at Ru h Lake by E. Beveridge in 1959 and by M. and E. Hird in 1961. In 1960 E. Partridge discovered Kahn 18 and Kahn 28. In 1982 the SMDC-Starrex joint venture completed geophysical and geochemical urveys including magnetics, VLF, IP/Resistivity, vegetation, bulk till and oil sampling, followed by drill testing of pecific targets. To date the most ignificant depo it is the 21 Zone which contain drill indicated reserves of 230,000 tons grading 0.5 oz/ton Au . The 21 Zone con ists of quartz with 5-10% (locally > 30%) drusy pyrite, minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, chalcocite and arsenopyrite. The 21 Zone is enclosed by a 25-50 m wide band of mylonitized monzonite. The mylonite occurs in the central portion of a 300 m wide northeasterly trending zone of brittle deformation .

In the province of Alberta the coal measures dip at so many different angles, between the horizontal and the vertical, that many different systems of haulage are in use. I will, however, only touch briefly upon the general -systems in use, and devote the major portion of this paper to a discussion of endless-rope haulage and its adaptibility to various conditions in coal mines; dealing in particular with the endless-rope haulage that was installed at Brule during the month of August 1923. In coal seams that are approximately level, and newly opened, hand-putting or tramming from the face is the cheapest, but when the mine is further developed tramming is out of the question, and the use of ponies is the next consideration. The time arrives, however, when mining reaches a point where the economical haulage of coal by horses cannot be done profitably, and then some system of mechanical haulage must be installed. The installation of any system should be carefully considered before any particular type of haulage is adopted, because a great deal depends upon the grade or dip of the seam. Motor haulage is impossible to operate profitably on a grade of over 6 per cent and, while it is possible to use ponies, on short runs, up to 9 per cent, some other means of main and secondary haulage must be installed when a 9 per cent grade, is exceeded. I will, therefore, deal first with secondary haulage, because even though a main haulage is established, secondary haulage can be used to feed the main haulage.

"Multi-scale simulation in coupled fluid flow- geomechanical systems is a computationally efficient method for numerically solving large poroelastic systems. When using multi-scale methods, care must be taken in ensuring consistency when information is exchanged between systems that have a different discretization. Here a method is presented which provides consistency between the pore pressure being calculated on a fine scale fluid flow domain and upscaled to the coarser scale geomechanical domain and the pore volume change being calculated on the coarse geomechanical domain and down-scaled to the fine fluid flow domain. Central to this process is the characterization of the mechanical properties of the poroelastic system at both scales.Another advantage of the method presented here is that it is applicable to hydraulically disconnected but laterally drained (i.e. multi-porosity) layered systems as well as hydraulically connected, layered systems. Thus it can be used in geological situations where thin shale streaks or hardpans impede flow between laterally extensive, hydraulically conductive units. This is significant as the pressure evolution of such a hydraulically disconnected, laterally drained system can be very different than a hydraulically connected one as shown here. INTRODUCTIONA multi-scale treatment of fluid flow and deformation is a key enabler when simulation of poroelastic phenomena is limited by computational resources. As the spatial domain of the geomechanics model is usually larger than the fluid flow model, it is desireable to use a coarser discretization in the geomechanical model compared to the fluid-flow model. This type of multi-scale simulation requires a consistent up-scaling of pore pressure from the fine scale fluid flow model to the coarse scale geomechanical model and down-scaling of pore volume change from the geomechanical model to the fluid flow model (see Figure 1)."

Inter formational sliding of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is an important reason that leads to the instability and fracture of rock mass in this stratum. There are no specific research achievements on bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation. In order to study the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types. This paper using the software of particle flow code (PFC) and JRC model to establish several typical structures of different roughness coefficient of surface morphology based on the laboratory tests on silty mudstone and marlite in Badong formation. A great deal of numerical shear tests were carried out by ball production, radius expansion and servo infliction. The research results are as follows: First, shear strength of Badong formation is found to vary between that of silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes by analyzing shear strength of the homogenous bedding planes and inhomogeneous rock types, we can find that the shearing strength in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the shearing strength of silty mudstone isotropic planes. Second, the basical friction angle of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the basical friction angle of silty mudstone between isotropic planes. Third, based on the experimental results, an expression is obtained to describe the relationship of the ratio of shearing strength between bedding planes of two different rock types and isotropic planes in soft rock, the rock combination coefficient, and the roughness coefficient. This study has important significance for further research on the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types.

"The Agrium Kapuskasing Phosphate Operation mines and processes up to 6,000 t/d of phosphate ore. Run-of-mine crushing to minus 6 inches is done in a toothed roll-crusher, while grinding is done in a SAG/ball mill circuit with no coarse recycle classification of the SAG mill discharge. The primary grinding mill is an 18 ft. diameter x 9 ft. EGL, 1500 HP variable speed SAG mill and the secondary mill is a 13 ft. diameter x 21 ft. long, 2000 HP fixed speed, ball mill. When hard ore was treated, the SAG mill restricted the tonnage that could be ground. When soft ore was treated, the ball mill and spiral classifier overloaded and restricted throughput.Recommendations from a plant benchmark and an ore hardness testing program, on how to better utilize installed energy in the Agrium SAG mill when treating soft ore, and how to obtain best results when treating hard ore, were checked in a pilot plant investigation in the 3 ft. diameter Starkey-PRO Pilot SAG Mill. Correlation between the ore hardness testing and the results from the 3’ Pilot SAG mill was very good. In addition, the work indicated the results that could be expected for the different ore types when using either smaller SAG discharge grates and/or a vibrating screen with 10 mesh square opening cloth.INTRODUCTIONAgrium Kapuskasing Phosphate Operation consists of a 6800 t/d open pit mine and a concentrator, near the Town of Kapuskasing in Northern Ontario. The two major ore types are sandy ore and cemented ore. Sandy ore is fine, soft and easy to grind in the SAG mill while cemented ore is harder, more blocky and difficult to grind in the SAG mill. The ratio of sandy to cemented ore in the deposit is thought to be in the order of 80:20 but can range as high as 5050, so it was important for the grinding circuit to have the ability to treat sandy ore alone."

The separation efficiency in a mineral processing plant is generally assessed and reported in terms of elemental assays constituting the minerals of interest. However, different minerals comprising of same elements behave differently under similar process conditions. Thus, it is imperative to track the mineral composition thank elemental composition of different streams in a processing plant. The availability of automated mineral analyzers such as QEMSCAN and TESCAN in recent times has made it possible. However, due to the high cost and expertise required, their adaptation in day to day monitoring of operations is not yet a common place. X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile fitting (Rietveld Refinement) is another technique which can provide estimates of mineral proportions in a sample. The results of Rietveld Refinement however are affected by coating of fines on coarse particles, method of sample preparation, particle size distribution of sample, elemental substitution in mineral crystal lattice. In the present work, we propose a simple and efficient method for quantitative estimation of minerals in iron ores using elemental assays and thermo-gravimetry analysis data. The minerals (hematite, goethite, gibbsite, kaolin and quartz) are identified using powder XRD analysis. It is also observed that goethite contains Al substitution in the crystal lattice. The samples were analyzed for %Fe, %Al2O3 and %Silica using chemical analysis. The measured Loss on Ignition (LOI) in the sample is contributed from goethite, gibbsite and kaolinite phases. LOI from gibbsite and goethite occur in temperature range 250–350°C and LOI from kaolinite occur in temperature range 400–700°C. According, LOI are determined in two different temperature ranges that are 100–400°C and 400–850°C. We have used the data to successfully determine the mineral compositions of iron ore samples. We have also employed a data reconciliation algorithm on the calculated data for further improvement and consistency of our results. Our method is very convenient for quick estimation of mineral proportions in a sample. The proposed method can also be used for quantitative phase estimation in bauxite ores and red muds.

These reporting standards are recognised and adopted world-wide for market-related reporting and financial investment.The IRT is not an international reporting code and does not supersede existing national reporting standards. Rather it is a guideline that encapsulates the content of these standards for the benefit of the international mining industry and its various stakeholders.The template is a 'living document' that is continuously updated and improved as new national laws, rules, codes and guidelines are created or amended.The International Template is advisory only and where national codes already exist, these will take precedence. The International Template is intended to assist those countries that either do not have a reporting code or whose code is outdated, to produce a new code consistent with international best practice. It also provides a consolidated version of national codes that reflects their compatible international components and may thus be used in comparisons with other international reporting systems. "This is the third in a series of articles about the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO). The first article was an interview with Niall Weatherstone, Chairman of CRIRSCO (CIM Magazine, February 2008) the second described the background and goals of CRIRSCO (CIM Magazine, March/April 2008). In 2007, CRIRSCO was adopted as the Reserves and Resources Task Force of the International Council on Mining and Metals. This decision by ICMM has resulted in an increased level of funding for CRIRSCO and the ability to advance its objectives. In mid-October 2007, CRIRSCO members met in London England to discuss the status of each of the member countries’ reporting codes and the progress of various CRIRSCO projects. Update on national reporting codes Australia: The last update of the Australian JORC Code was in 2004. While there are ongoing discussions about issues that arise from the application of the latest version of the Code, there are no plans to update JORC in the near future. Canada: The Canadian Securities Administrators revised National Instrument 43-101 in December 2005. At the same time, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum published updated Resource and Reserve Definitions that are incorporated by reference in NI 43-101. CIM is continuing work on developing Best Practice Guidelines to assist practitioners in the estimation of Mineral Resources and Reserves. South Africa: The South African Mineral Reserve Committee is currently awaiting an update of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Limited Listing Rules, which will incorporate both SAMREC and SAMVAL (South African valuation guidelines). The official launch of both codes is expected in 2008. Europe: The Pan-European Reserves Reporting Committee expects to release a consultation draft in 2008. Emphasis is being placed on industrial minerals and aggregates, which constitute a very large industry in Europe. Chile: The Chilean Certification Code was approved in early 2008. As part of the Code, a National Commission is being established to screen and review reports on a random or specific basis. United States: The Society of Mining Engineers updated the SME Reporting Guidelines in 2007. The Securities and Exchange Commission has not accepted these more up-to-date definitions and guidelines. The SME committee will continue to discuss the incorporation of these Reporting Guidelines with SEC. SME has also established a class of membership, a Registered Member, which includes disciplinary measures for non-compliance with the SME guidelines."

Arsenic bearing minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13), which may associate with major copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and bomite (Cu2FeS4), usually report to the copper concentrate in conventional flotation due to their similar flotation properties. Arsenic in a copper concentrate causes environmental problems and also problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical process. Voltammetric studies were carried out to investigate the oxidation characteristics of enargite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bomite. Contact angle measurements and micro-flotation tests were conducted to examine the flotation characteristics of enargite and chalcopyrite under controlled pulp potentials. Selective flotation of enargite from chalcopyrite under varied pulp potentials was conducted to investigate the feasibility of arsenic removal from a copper concentrate. The test results indicate that the non-arsenic bearing copper minerals ( chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) were easier to oxidise than arsenic bearing minerals ( enargite and tennantite) in an alkaline solution. Enargite floated well at a potential as high as +0.45 V vs. SCE while chalcopyrite was completely depressed at a potential higher than +0.43 V vs. SCE. Selective flotation revealed that enargite can be successfully removed from chalcopyrite through controlling the pulp potential at +0.30 ~ +0.50 V vs. SCE.

Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.

With these words, Preston Cloud begins a recent editorial, in Science(l), in which he presents a brief resume of some of the findings of the Committee on Resources and Man of the National Academy of Science-National Research Council(20.Their report, which is based on a two-year study by an extremely competent group and consists of some 250 pages of text, is even more far-reaching and sobering than the report on Energy Resources(3). It begins by quoting Sir Macfarlane Burnet as follows:""There are three imperatives: to reduce war to a minimum; to stabilize human population, and to pre-vent the progressive destruction of the earth's irreplaceable resources.(4)"

Introduction In presenting this paper on the water-power resources of the Province of Manitoba, it was considered that a brief resume of the power resources of Canada, of the power already developed, and its utilization in the industries 9f the country, would be of particular interest in showing the rapid progress that has already been made. Amongst Canada's national assets, water power occupies a foremost place because of the facilities it provides for the development of her other great natural resources. The rapid development of the mining, pulp and paper, and general manufacturing industries, and the concomitant growth in urbanization, with its numerous demands for domestic, commercial, and municipal service power, have combined to stimulate hydraulic development to a point surpassing even the most sanguine predictions of a few years ago. With the bringing into operation during 1928 of hydraulic turbines aggregating over 550,300 h.p., and of a further 378,400 h.p. in 1929, Canada's total hydraulic development at the end of 1929 amounted to over 5,700,000 h.p., and in this year, 1930, the active construction in hydro-electric plants throughout the country totals in excess of 1,600,000 h .p.

Chemical conversion coating is a process to create thin oxide/hydroxide film containing several inorganic/organic compounds by way of chemical deposition reaction. In case of the application to Mg mobile electronic housings, the film should possess a good electric conductivity while keeping adequate corrosion resistance and working as a paint base. The use of toxic/hazardous chemicals is strictly prohibited from the environmental aspects. This paper describes the recent trend of conversion coating used for Mg electronic housings and analyzes critically from the point of surface technology. The importance of cleaning process and understanding of surface microstructure are particularly emphasized with several experimental results.

Saskatchewan, and the Box property of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, are located on lake Athabasca nine mines from Beaverlodge townsite.Previously, all Eldorado freight was delivered by barge at the Lodge Bay portage, hauled across the portage, and across Beaverlodge lake by small Northern Transportation Company barges, which involved many handlings.In 1952 the port of 'Bushell' was established at Black bay. This is a particularly snug harbour, well protected from the main body of the lake and with good foundations for docking facilities. A Butler building, 300 ft. by 60 ft., and tank farms provide storage at the port. A •road from Bushell to the main Beaverlodge operation, a distance of twelve miles through rugged terrain, was built by the Saskatchewan Government. The cost was shared by the Saskatchewan Government, the Federal Government, and Eldorado and other mining companies.Along this road are located the properties of several enterprising mining companies and near the midpoint lies the ambitious budding town of Uranium. This road has made portaging unnecessary and palletized freight loaded at Waterways, Alta., is now loaded directly on trucks at Bushell and delivered to the point of consumption."
