The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomical. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

"Biological leaching can be used to enhance the recovery of gold and silver from refractory ores, concentrates and tailings. The method liberates precious metals associated with sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite making them amenable to cyanidation. The chemistry and features of biological preoxidation leaching is discussed. A summary of the results obtained on various ores, concentrates and tailings is presented.INTRODUCTIONRefractory precious metal ores in which gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite are becoming more important to the mining industry. This is due both to a depletion of simpler, free-milling ores and to a significant increase in the price of gold in recent years. Whereas many ores can be directly cyanided with gold solubilizations over 90% obtained, the refractory ores respond poorly to direct cyanidation and require decomposition of the precious metal-bearing sulphide minerals to increase recoveries.Decomposition of sulphides by oxidation prior to cyanidation can be carried out by several means. The oldest method is roasting which removes unwanted ore constituents by high temperature oxidation and volatilization. In Canada, for example, roasting is used at Giant Yellowknife (Connell and Cross, 1981). Another method gaining increasing acceptance is pressure hydrometallurgy which uses aqueous oxidation conducted at high temperature and pressure. Homestake Mining Company have recently completed construction of a plant incorporating pressure oxidation at their Mclaughlin property in California (Guinivire, 1984)."

The world wide growth dynamics and the continuously growing demand for energy, results in increasing energy prices. Looking from this point, the efficient exploitation of fossil fuel deposits has become a more important factor to the production of energy raw materials than ever before. This shall be reached by an increase of the automation degree of the bucket wheel excavator in the open pit mining as well as a quality increase of the entire mining process chain. A further optimization of this operation can only be achieved by gathering additional information about the input parameters. The earlier and more exact the description of the input parameter, the greater the effectiveness of the entire process chain. To address this major issue, the RWE Power AG assigned the Institute for Transportation and Automation Technology with the research project "SIMT, Sensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the Interfaces" [Kes07]. Presently, the control of the bucket wheel excavator is carried out manually by the operator, as well as the visual identification of the different geological layers and the energy raw materials. In this paper, a sensor-system is introduced, which was developed in order to transfer the manual material identification and detection of interfaces into an automatic online procedure. A special challenge and the main focus of this contribution is the integration of this sensor system into a bucket of the bucket wheel excavator. For measuring procedures where direct contact with the in situ material is necessary, the sensor has to be integrated into the bucket. Since direct contact with the material is not necessary, it can be integrated next to the bucket wheel. The results of a preliminary study show that although there is a broad spectrum of sensor technologies for material and interface identification, only a few are suitable for an application in on-line measuring at the bucket wheel excavator. Taking into consideration the demands on the sensor technology, the studies carried out and comparable applications of individual sensor technologies which have already taken place in practice, the integration of the following measuring systems have been realized: ground penetrating radar / reflection measurements, geo electric, resistance geo electric technology. The solution developed in the research project offers for the first time the direct integration of sensor systems into the bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. It will now be possible to test other measurement methods and sensors, not only for the ones already mentioned. As an example the integration of a triaxial accelerometer to measure the solid borne sound and vibrations concerning the cutting of different materials will be shown.

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. The EKATI Diamond Mine has successfully completed the development and commissioning of the Panda Underground Project to extract the ore below the Panda open pit. The dominant kimberlite domain of the Panda Underground, intermixed olivine-rich and mud-rich resedimented volcaniclastic kimberlite (RVK), is very similar to the kimberlite domain characterizing the open pit portion of the pipe. A sublevel retreat mining method is in operation underground at Panda; near-vertical blast rings are drilled and blasted into an open void. Broken ore is mucked with load, haul and dump trucks (LHD?s), sized underground then moved to surface through a conveyor system to the process plant. An advanced feasibility study is in progress at the Koala Underground Project. The Koala pipe is geologically more complex than Panda. The pipe below the open pit is comprised of at least five distinct kimberlite domains. There is a 100 m thick zone of incompetent low-grade mud-rich RVK between the open pit and the stable high-grade olivine-rich primary volcaniclastic kimberlite where mining will be initiated. As a result, it is proposed that Koala will employ sublevel caving; each blast ring shot would be confined and mucked in sequence to maintain the cave of the over-lying low-grade RVK ore. The sublevel cave method seeks to safely defer the mucking of the low grade ore to the latter part of the mine life.

Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within layered metagabbro zones of the Sinarsuk deposit, West Greenland. The main oxide minerals are vanadiferous magnetite and ilmenite, comprising 30% to 90% of the rock volume and the ratio of magnetite to ilmenite ranges from 3:2 to 4:1. Ore microscopy shows that magnetite and ilmenite vary between 0.2 mm and 4.5 mm in grain size, but locally they are coarser grained. Grains are subhedral to euhedral and annealed suggesting that they will liberate very well upon grinding. Electron microprobe analyses indicate that magnetite grains are homogeneous and have a vanadium content, in different mineralized samples, ranging from 1.93 wt% to 2.68 wt% equivalent V2O5. Ilmenite hosts abundant and variably sized hematite lamellae, and it has vanadium contents ranging from 0.32 wt% to 0.59 wt% equivalent V2O5. Preliminary beneficiation of two composite bulk samples shows the samples can be beneficiated fairly easily using low-intensity magnetic separation at a coarse grind (106 microns to 600 microns) to yield a vanadiferous magnetite concentrate. The presence of hematite lamellae in ilmenite prevents recovery of a satisfactory ilmenite concentrate. The most likely beneficiation flowsheet would encompass a primary mill (SAG or rod mill), which would grind to about 600 microns, followed by a rougher magnetic separation stage. The rougher magnetic concentrate would be reground in a ball mill until suitable liberation is achieved. The reground material would then be cleaned in further LIMS stages. However, further laboratory testing is required to establish the final beneficiation program. This work demonstrates the value of mineralogical investigation in guiding and explaining the results of beneficiation processes.

Mill tailings, containing iron sulphides in particular, pose an environmental concern since they constitute a potential source of acid mine drainage which can damage vegetation, harm soil and living organisms, and contaminate groundwaters. Proper disposal of acid generating tailings is therefore an important issue that must be addressed and resolved in a satisfactory manner. Placer Dome Canada operates a 4000 t/d gold cyanidation facility at Musselwhite mine, in northwestern Ontario, where the mill tailings have been classified as acid generating. This study was conducted to explore the effectiveness of froth flotation in removing the sulphide minerals from these tailings and producing a low-sulphur, non-acid generating material that could serve as a capping material for previously deposited tailings. Laboratory semi-batch flotation tests were carried out in accordance with an experimental design procedure, and a computer simulation program was developed to facilitate the evaluation of flotation performance. In this investigation, pH, collector concentration, and airflow rate were considered as the relevant flotation variables, and their effects were examined both experimentally and by simulation. Results have demonstrated that flotation can successfully desulphurize the Musselwhite mine tailings and render them non-acid generating.

"The operations of Bethlehem Copper are situated in the south-central interior of British Columbia at an elevation of 4900 feet above sea level. Main road and rail transportation systems pass through Ashcroft in the Thompson Valley, which is 28 miles by road from the minesite. The operation was the first low-grade open-pit porphyry copper mine in British Columbia.The minerals are chiefly chalcopytite and bornite, while the rock is principally feldspar and quartz. In the outer fringes of the orebodies some pyrite is present. Average grade of mill feed is 0.55% copper.History of Milling Operations Production commenced in December 1962 at a rate of 3,000 tpd in a plant that comprised two-stage crushing followed by rod and ball milling. Production ratings were increased to 6,000, 10,000 and 12,000 tpd by the addition of a further stage of crushing and more rod and ball mills. When the last expansion was completed tonnage throughput exceeded the 12,000 ton designed rate and was stabilized at 15,500 tpd.However, recovery did not meet expectations at the expanded rate because of coarse flotation feed. Capacity in the rod mill circuits exceeded the subsequent fine grinding capacity, resulting in poor liberation. Studies were initiated to improve recovery without decreasing throughput.Description of Operation Prior to Pebble Milling Crushing with primary, secondary and a closed tertiary stage proceeds at a scheduled 20.5 shifts per week. Fine ore screened on 1/2"" x 4"" apertures is stored in a 30,000-ton bin ahead of two 12.5' x 15' rod mills. Rod mill discharge joins secondary ball mill (one 10.5' x 14' and one 11' x 14') discharge for classification in a single 50"" cyclone which closes the secondary mills. Overflow from this cyclone is split between three third-stage ball mill-pump-cyclone circuits (two 11' x 14' and one 12.5' x 15'). Prior to addition of the two pebble mills the flotation feed was produced by this three-stage grinding system. Grinding criteria are shown in Table I."

The Somita plant processes low sulphide gold ore in Burkina Faso with a CIL process. After experiencing recurrent low gold recoveries, Somita undertook an investigation on the source of the problem. COREM conducted a mineralogical study on different pit samples. A series of tests was also conducted on a composite sample from the plant which shows a content of 3.4 g/t in gold and 0.48 % in graphite. A reference test in laboratory resulted in a recovery of gold of 75%, similar to plant recoveries for the evaluated ore. In these tests, even if cyanide is not deficient, it was diverted mainly into iron cyanide complex, copper cyanide complexes and by graphite adsorption. Causes of low recovery were also identified and quantified. Solutions to increase gold recovery were suggested such as increasing gold dissolution kinetics by O2 or by lead nitrate addition, change in activated carbon addition point location to the 1st cyanidation tank and finer grinding to increase liberation. Increase in the pH could also contribute to reduce cyanidation consumption. Following these recommendations, Somita changed carbon addition from tank 2 to tank 1 in the CIL circuit. This change led to an increase of more than 5% in gold recovery. A system for the addition of lead nitrate is also under implementation at the plant and benefit will be evaluated in 2013. Finally, pit management for cyanidation will be done based on mineralogy instead of gold content in the future.

"Ecological Engineering, a biotechnological approach to the decommissioning of base metal mining wastes, is being tested on two pits (Gloryholes) in Newfoundland, Canada. Pit #2 has an average pH of 3.5 and flows into Pit #1 where, through additional ground water contribution, the pH is circumneutral, ranging between 5.5 to 7.The AMD in Pit #2 originates from underground workings and exposed massive sulphide on the pit walls. The overflow from Pit #1 averages about 10 L/s with less than 0.2 mg/L of Cu and 40 mg/L of Zn.Ecological Engineering utilizes organic substrate as a source of carbon and nutrients for microbial populations which can generate alkalinity and reduce metals. In 1989, limnocorrals (enclosures of 4 m diameter and approx 3 m depth) were placed in both pits to test the most suitable organic amendment (peat and sawdust). Microbial alkalinitygeneration was evident 95 days after placement of the amendment on July 4, 1989. The pH had increased after 120 days from 3.5 to 4.5 and by day 480 the pH was 7 in limnocorrals in Pit #2. Zinc concentrations in the limnocorrals in Pit #2, dropped from an average of 35 mg/L to about 2 mg/L or less, by day 480.A scaled-up experiment has been under way since August 25, 1990, where 390 m3 are treated in pit #2 and 750 m3 in Pit #1. One hundred eighty days after placement of the amendment, zinc was reduced in the acid Pit #2 from 40 mg/L to 15 mg/L. Research is underway to determine those factors which limit microbial activity."

"IntroductionLaboratory and industrial grinding tests have shown that the process of size reduction of metal containing ores can be significantly influenced by chemicals added to the slurry being ground.,The terms grinding aid or grinding additive refer to a substance which, when mixed into the mill contents, causes an increase in the rate of size reduction. The increased rate can be used to grind a higher feed rate to the desired product size or it can be used to produce a finer product size at a fixed rate. Whether the use of a grinding aid is justified in any given situation depends on the cost of the substance versus the improvement of output or product quality obtained with its use.A wide variety of grinding additive mechanisms have been suggested in the general mining literature (1,2,3,4,5,6,7). The prevention of particle agglomeration, slurry cushioning of grinding media impact, grinding media coating, changing the strength of macro porous rocks, and chemical adsorption on flaw surfaces to change bonding forces and surface energy have all been suggested. More recently, some grinding additive work has been carried out (8,9,10,11) which suggests that the use of efficient chemicals to control the fluidity of dense slurries is a viable economic approach to achieve improved grinding rates. These increased grinding rates are achieved with no increase in power to the grinding mills and apparently with no increase in media consumption costs. Unlike much of the previous work with grinding additives, this recent work is accompanied by a rather complete engineering characterization and prediction of performance capability. The chemicals involved were chosen so as to efficiently control the viscosities of slurries under conditions of high shear yet not adversely affecting flotation, flocculation, and other downstream surface chemistry operations."

"1. Introduction Mattagami Lake Mines and Orchan Mines operate zinc copper mines adjacent to one another near Matagami, Quebec, situated approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Rouyn-Noranda. (Note: Mattagami Lake and Orchan are in the process of being absorbed by Noranda Mines and will become Noranda Mines-Matagami Division). Both concentrators began operations in late 1963.The Mattagami Lake concentrator is capable of treating up to 3,500 metric tons per day of massive sulphide ore with a mineral composition shown in TABLE 1. The Orchan concentrator consists of two separate circuits - the Orchan circuit with a capacity of 1,050 metric tons per day and a custom circuit with a capacity of 825 metric tons per day. Throughout its operation, Orchan has custom milled ore from several smaller deposits in the Matagami district."

"A moveable flotation miniplant was designed and constructed at the research laboratory of Inco Technical Services Ltd. to address the need for flowsheet development with a limited amount of ore (such as drill cores). It consists of one rod mill, two regrind ball mills, one vibratory screen, 24 flotation cells of various sizes and two Venturi aerated flotation columns. The setup has continuous monitoring capability for pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity and temperature in conditioning tanks and flotation cells. Various options regarding flotation reagents, circuit configurations, and fineness of primary grind and regrind can be readily evaluated. The throughput of the miniplant is 20 – 30 kg/hour ore.Unit operations such as flash flotation, magnetic separation and gravity concentration can also be evaluated as an integral part of an entire flowsheet development.This communication describes the basic design features of the miniplant and some examples of applications are given.INTRODUCTIONInco operates numerous mines in Sudbury and Thompson and will shortly bring the Voisey’s Bay mine into production. It has long been recognized that the ores from different mines or from different depths of the same mine can give different responses in flotation. There is a growing need to properly evaluate the ores before feeding the mill to maximize the return of the mine/mill operation. Inco Technical Services Limited at Sheridan Park, Mississauga, Ontario has developed a batch laboratory procedure to address this issue. The results are considered in the overall economical assessment of new mine operations.For ores that cannot be processed by the existing mill operations or that will be processed by a new mill, it is necessary to develop a flowsheet that can maximize the economical return of the mine/mill operation. While recognizing the importance and contribution of the laboratory batch flotation procedure, it does not generate reliable data for flowsheet simulation and design. A full-scale pilot plant campaign is normally required to obtain the design data but often this is not possible due to a limited amount of ore obtainable from the drill core. A small-scale pilot plant (mini pilot plant or miniplant) capable of processing 20-30 kg/h ore can provide this data prior to a full-scale pilot plant campaign. A miniplant can also be used to optimize the circuit configurations, reagent additions and recycle options of process water before pilot plant work and can be used to test a different flowsheet configuration for an existing mill before re-piping a plant circuit."

"New or improved mathematical models of mineral processing machines are published almost on a monthly basis. Often, these models can be calibrated from bench-scale test results and programmed using spreadsheet software to simulate different designs and operating conditions in open-circuit configuration. However, since mineral processing plants frequently operate comminution, separation and/or extraction machines in closed-circuit configurations, open-circuit simulations often have limited applicability.The simulation of closed-circuit configurations necessitates the programming of an iterative loop to bring the circuit to equilibrium. This can be done by using spreadsheet software but often requires advanced programming skills. As an alternative, LIMN® software, which simplifies the programming of closed-circuit configurations within spreadsheets can be used. This software was specifically designed to turn a Microsoft EXCEL® spreadsheet into a closed-circuit modeling and simulation platform with minimal programming.During the past few years, the Mineral Processing Group at the Noranda Technology Centre, has used this software for numerous projects which include the simulation of multi-stage cyclone circuits, closed-circuit regrinding and locked-cycle flotation tests. Using these projects as examples, the flexibility and the easy to use nature of the LIMN® software is demonstrated.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing engineers routinely have to make predictions regarding comminution and separation processes. Predicting the appropriate dimensions of equipment and the process response to changes in operating mode are probably the most common situations that they face. In all cases these predictions are expected to be rapid and accurate.Predictions made by engineers are frequently based on mathematical models. Many first principles, empirical, semi-empirical, steady state and dynamic models of mineral processes can be found in the literature. In fact, new or improved mineral processing models are continuously being proposed and in spite of this variety, process engineers often have to either develop their own or tailor existing models to suit their particular needs."

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Maricunga mine in Chile presents an ideal opportunity to apply the SART process to a heap leach operation. Given increasing levels of cyanide complexed copper in current pregnant solutions from Maricunga heaps (over 300 ppm Cu), there is a need to reduce these levels and decrease cyanide consumption and cost. Additionally, a means of disposing of this copper is required, preferably as a saleable product. The well published SART process applied to gold-copper cyanide solutions was selected as it allows rapid precipitation of cyanide soluble copper as a relatively pure copper sulphide. The process also allows effective recovery and recycle of cyanide back to the heap leach operation.This paper reviews the SART process chemistry and presents a summary of SART bench-scale and pilot plant testwork completed by Kinross. Key design parameters and engineering aspects of the proposed plant at Maricunga are discussed. SART plant operating costs and net revenue analysis are included and illustrate the compelling economics of installing a SART process plant. Even without this ability, centrifugal concentrators are finding wideningapplications in precious metal concentration:1) PRIMARY GRINDING CIRCUITSEnhanced gravity concentration technology has largely replaced jigging as the technology of choice in precious metal grinding circuits worldwide. The benefits of using a centrifugal field to concentrate both coarse and fine gold are well documented but the placement of these machines within grinding circuits is still evolving. Conventional wisdom dictates that the best location for enhanced gravity machines is cyclone underflow on account of the elevated grade found in this stream when compared to cyclone feed or overflow. Plant operating experience at both large and small scale indicates that there are compelling arguments to place ENHANCED GRAVITY MACHINES on cyclone feed instead. At least two new plants, presently in the detailed design stage will incorporate gravity circuits that treat mill discharge or cyclone feed, Teck Cominco’s Pogo and Newcrest’s Telfer Expansion.Current Conventional PracticeThe current stream of choice for enhanced gravity concentration within grinding circuits is cyclone underflow although recent information indicates a swing toward cyclone feed. The supply of clean copper ores, which have high copper concentration and low impurities like arsenic, has declined year by year. Therefore, both mine and smelter sides have to consider how to remove impurities like arsenic. We focus herein on arsenic as an impurity because it is an extremely important issue from the environmental point of view. Approximately 150,000 t of arsenic is input into the copper industry every year. A small part of it is mainly treated in the smelting side. For instance, Ministro Hales Limited, which is a mining corporation in Chile, has performed the calcination process to remove arsenic from ore with high-arsenic content. In the process, flue gas is washed by water, and the final residue is treated by a hydrometallurgical process. Many processes for arsenic removal in various stages have been proposed, and several bottlenecks exist to achieve it. One of the difficulties encountered is getting an assessment of the process, which depends on the countries and/or areas of operation. The standardization of the assessment procedure will be desired in the near future to keep the same environment standards all over the world, and now is the time to start making discussions on this matter. This will be the first step in making an international assessment procedure for arsenic treatment in the copper industry. INTRODUCTION Using the term “sustainable development” without any scientific basis can give people a false sense of security. Engineers and scientists must analyze the total mass flow of energy and materials and estimate local drain on the environment as well as the global impact of a particular industrial activity to ensure sustainability on this planet. The operations of the mining and smelting industries have a strong effect on the environment even if they provide useful materials for human beings. The copper mining and smelting industries have brought about serious environmental problems in the past. For example, the Ashio mine pollution caused big damage to the agricultural sector near the Ashio area in Japan in the late 19th century. One of the most serious problems at that time was SO2 emission because copper ore is sulfide, and the smelting process basically results to sulfur oxidation. The resource balance from a copper smelter in a year, assuming a total production of 16 million tons, can be summarized as follows: discarded minerals, 30 billion tons; sulfur, 16 million tons; iron oxide, 8 million tons; additional smaller amounts of other metals, electricity, and fuel.

This paper deals with specifying and evaluating fans for mine ventilation projects. Topics such as fan and equipment design life, operating points, and operating conditions are discussed. Common operating problems, such as vibration, parallel operation, mechanical failure, erosion, corrosion, and deficient fan performance are covered. Apart from identifying the potential operating problems, likely causes and suggested remedies are given. Fan type, fan accessories, and likely system effects and fan testing are discussed. Suggestions on what should be covered when evaluating different fan options and proposals and suggestions on the verification of supplier claims and guarantees, including cost of operation, the evaluation of initial capital cost, estimate on maintenance costs, and likely replacement expenditure over the life of the fans. In addition, fan reliability, operational flexibility, suggested construction details and fan vendor past history and experience are reviewed.
