Mining and treatment of gold ore in the Ashanti region at Obuasi, Ghana has been continuous for more than 100 years. Earlier production from this world class deposit can be traced far into the history of West Africa's gold trade. As part of a general development and expansion program, Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (Ghana) recently undertook a program to heap leach oxidized near surface ore. Kappes, Cassiday & Associates was given a major role in the design, equipment supply, installation and start-up management of the 3000 tonne/day heap leach. Unusual conditions included a high annual rainfall and an ore which could be characterized as a soft, decomposed, water saturated schist. Production began in March 1990. Startup problems and their solutions are discussed.

Macroscopic and microscopic studies of the outburst-prone Gemini Coal (Bowen Basin) showed that outbursts were associated with a localized inertinite-rich ply. Previous studies of the Gemini Coal had shown a general relationship between desorption rate, regarded as a good measure of outburst proneness, and inertinite content of coal samples.Desorption rates increased with increasing inertinite content and were highest for inertodetrinite-rich samples. These results suggest that inertinite content and composition play a significant role in outbursting and may be useful in identifying outburst-prone coals, which could be confirmed by desorption measurements.Consequently outburst-prone areas in the Upper Permian coal measures ofthe Sydney, Gunnedah and Bowen Basins have been defined using a combination ofthe parameters, inertinite content, depth ofcover and coal rank. In the Upper Permian, inertinite-rich coals are confined mainly to the top of the coal measures, except in the Sydney and Gunnedah Basins where an inertinite-rich interval (Bayswater Coal and correlatives) is also present towards the base of these measures. Only a small area ofthe central Sydney Basin, butmuch ofthe north-eastern and north-central part of the exposed Bowen Basin is considered outburst prone on the basis of these parameters.The most outburst-prone inertodetrinite-rich lithologies have a patchy and unpredictable distribution in the top of the Upper Permian coal measures. They can be defined only by sampling and petrographic analysis at the subsection level.

The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance. This research project came about as a result of ICI Australia offering a scholarship to a final-year mining engineering student at the Western Australian School of Mines. A signifi-cant part of this year of study is devoted to an industrial project and consequently one of the conditions of the award is that the successful applicant pursue a research project of interest to the donor company.Having selected the project and the most appropriate final year student, a steering committee composed of representatives of ICI Australia, Kalgoorlie Mining Associates, the Mines Department and the WA School of Mines was set up. This committee is largely responsible for planning the main thrust of the research work whilst the detailed planning and day-to-day activities have been largely the responsi-bility of the research student, his academic supervisor and senior staff at the Mt Charlotte Mine.

To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

Using a Jarrell-Ash "Compact" direct reading spectrometer, analyses were made of a wide variety of rocks ranging from acidic to ultrabasic types. Statistical evaluation suggests that accuracies comparable with the values obtained by the rapid chemical methods used by the United States Geological Survey will be obtained.The spectrographic method involves fusion of the rock with lithium tetraborate, strontium being incorporated in the flux as the internal standard. The resulting bead is ground with graphite and pressed into a pellet. The counts obtained on two standard pellets are used to correct for instrumental drift.Background readings are made at 4109 Å and corrections for background are made to all lines. Corrections for matrix interferences, both by chemical suppression and optical enhancement, are made. The three corrections of drift, background, and matrix are incorporated into one general expression which has been programmed on magnetic cards, each element requiring a separate card. The cards are placed individually into a desk top computer (an Olivetti Programma 101), which enables true counts to be calculated from the "readout" counts, and the element concentration is then obtained from computer-printed tables by referring to the appropriate value of true counts versus concentration. These tables were prepared by making a polynomial regression analysis of the spectrographic results from 50 standard and analysed samples, a curve of best fit being chosen for each element.The regression coefficients, usually of a fourth or fifth degree equation, together with other relevant data, were fed into a large computer, programmed to print out tables of concentration versus true counts. This technique enables the results obtained to be based on mathematically-derived values rather than on hand-drawn calibration graphs, giving greater inherent accuracy. The technique has been shown to give results of good accuracy and acceptable precision suitable for many geological and geochemical exploration programmes involving the analysis of many rock samples of different types.

Access roads for haulage, construction or maintenance purposes are discussed with particular attention being given to the un- sealed "all weather" form of construction for Off-Highway applications. The service conditions experienced by the surfaces used in these roads is examined. These conditions are discussed in terms of the conventional engineering properties used for natural gravel material selection. Experience gained during the construction of a pipeline access track is used to illustratE material selection guidelines based on geological input and an understanding of good construction practices. Although the unsealed gravel road is the back-bone of the rural road network in Australia, in general, traffic loadings are relatively low compared to the off-highway unsealed haulage road. The cost of the haulage/access road construction component is one important factor in project planning which needs careful consideration. It is no longer acceptable that the initial rough exploration track be gradually upgraded so that it will eventually carry construction and maintenance traffic safely and efficiently. The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.

In southeastern China, offshore Tertiarybasins are buried underneath the broad continental shelf areas from Taiwan to Hainan Island. These basins bear relatively similar characteristics of structure, stratigraphy and tectonics. Based on age and tectonic framework, these Tertiary basins are divided into two groups of Paleogene basin and Neogene basin (Fig.1 and 2). However, observations of extensional structures indicate that the Paleogene basins are rift basins; and the predominant structural features are NE-SW trending half grabens and fault blocks. In a regional scale, these half grabens and adjacent uplifts represent a horst-and-graben structural style. Neogene basins are downwarp basins lying on the tilting continental shelf. Late Tertiary sequences are relatively undeformed but locally with minor folding and thrusting during the Pliocene-Pleistocene.Seismic stratigraphy and well data indicate that the Early Tertiary strata are commonly tilted and disturbed as nonmarine to marginal marine facies deposited in the wedge-shaped half grabens; the Late Tertiary strata are generally parallel undisturbed marine facies accumulated in the enlarged downwarp basins overlying the infilled half grabens. In general, three major regional unconformities formed during the Late Cretaceous, the Late Eocene and the Middle Miocene. Widespread extrusive basaltic flows are commonly associated with these unconformities.

Tiwest employs several methods to assess the quality of heavy mineral concentrates in ore and process samples. Mineralogy is determined using a method called MA98, developed in conjunction with JKMRC over the last three years (Zhang and Whiten, 2001). A range of other techniques are also used to characterise ore, heavy mineral concentrates and mineral products. MA98 is the culmination of efforts since 1989 to determine mineralogy from chemical analysis without recourse to heavy liquid fractionation, which has traditionally been used to discriminate between light-heavy , zircon, rutile and leucoxene. The major advance with MA98 is the use of statistical mass balancing for all chemical species, as opposed to reliance on key chemical species for each mineral. Three magnetic fractions are analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, with a minerals balance performed for each. Heavy mineral concentrates processed by this method include drill samples, process samples from the wet concentrators and Dry Mill, and mineral products. TBE can be avoided for higher heavy mineral grade samples since quartz is determined from SiO2 balance. In this sense the method is sufficiently universal and robust to cope with a wide range of sample types and compositions. The MA98 algorithm provides abundant information in addition to mineralogy, including TiO2 and Fe2O3 grades of ilmenite and leucoxene, and concentrations of weakly magnetic zircon and kyanite. Information such as this is invaluable in tracking different minerals through the processing plants. Other ore assessment procedures used by Tiwest provide for modelling of orebodies by mineral sizings, Fe in zircon, and FeO and U+Th in ilmenite. Microscopy is used to provide important qualitative information such as grain shape, surface staining and degree of cementing. These quality measurements are included with mineralogy in geological ore models and are available for mine scheduling. In using the above methods to characterise heavy mineral concentrates, Tiwest is better placed to predict and monitor plant performance and product quality from any ore zone.

The'treatment of the South Alligator valley uranium ores passed through three phases dictated by economic circumstances during the years 1956- 640 In the first phase high grade ores were treated by hand sorting and wet gravity separation for recovery of high grade concentrate to meet a United States Atomic Energy Commission (U.S.A.E.C.) contract for plus 50 per cent pitchblende concentrates. Secondly tailings from the gravity plant and some high grade ores were trucked to Rum Jungle and sold to the Australian Atomic Energy Comm- ission (A.A.E.C.). Thirdly solvent extraction plants were built at Moline (previously Northern Hercules) by United Uranium N.L. (UOU.N.L.) and at the South Alligator River by South Alligator Uranium N.L. (SOA.U.N.L.). These were the first solvent extraction plants designed in Australia, as earlier plants used the ion exchange process for recovery of uranium oxide. The plants were small, indeed the S.A.U.N.L. 15 ton per day plant was possibly the smallest commercial plant known, but they operated efficiently with good recoveries, and were placed on a care and maintenance'òbasis when contracts were filled. Sulphuric acid was supplied in bulk to both plants by the A.A.E.C. from the 30 ton a day acid plant at Rum Jungle. Gold was recovered as a by product of uranium ore from the Moline plant.

Methane and fire hazards have a vital effect on work safety and continuity of mining plant operation. In the 1990s, the SMP hazards monitoring and ventilation control systems, based on continuous measurement of air parameters, were put into operation at nearly 30 Polish mines. These systems provide continuous measurement of methane concentration within the range of zero to 100 per cent with automatic switching off of electrical energy immediately after detection of potentially explosive conditions. Early detection of coal spontaneous combustion and open fires is made by continuous measurements of CO, CO2, smoke and O2 content in mine air as well as temperature changes in air and rock mass. The essence of the system is intrinsic safety of all underground instrumentation and uninterrupted central power supply from the surface. All abnormal and critical states are signalled to the mine control room. These trigger alarm and emergency procedures. The computer based ventilation monitoring and control system also performs the function of an expert system for fire detection and underground fire fighting. The mine control operator (dispatcher) makes use of stored data in computer escape route schemes and procedures for the safe withdrawal of miners from hazardous areas. The operator can put in motion intrinsically safe alarm signalling units and banners with programmed messages indicating escape routes.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. However, the answers to various quantitative questions in mining operations is often limited by the capacity of the GIS to process appropriate spatial data. The efficient operation of a large underground mine demands that an adequate GIS be put in place.

Long-hole drilling technology has rapidly advanced this decade beginning with rotary drilling/pump down camera surveying and culminating in down-hole motor drilling with cableless electronic surveying over the past two years. With the latter system, a high level of directional control is achievable in boreholes up to 1000m long. Past long-hole drilling across the industry has seen a mixture of success and failure. With these experiences, new and improved techniques and equipment have evolved. A number of long-hole drilling options are available as variations on the basic rotary and down-hole motor methods. They involve different levels of cost and equipment and vary in their suitability in different geological environments and definition of targets. Long-hole drilling is mainly target applied, either in defining geological structures in greater detail, or proving important mining areas such as longwall blocks, to be free of structures. Successful drilling hinges on a combination of drilling expertise, quality and appropriateness of equipment, understanding of geological conditions and good colliery support. Drilling expertise forms part of sound interpretation through keeping relevant records, understanding the reasons for changes in drilling conditions and implementing specific tests such as coring. The final interpretation builds upon all other available geological information. There is still scope for research into improved techniques and equipment. The use of long boreholes for geophysical surveys has high potential.

Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.

In Northland, Coromandel, Taupo and Canterbury, weathering and hydrothermal alteration of Cenozoic volcanic rocks has resulted in the formation of various types of clay deposits. Subtropical weathering of rhyolite in the Matauri Bay area (Matauri and Mahimahi deposits) in Northland has formed high quality halloysite deposits. The Matauri Bay halloysite is mined and processed to produce reputedly æthe world's whitest clayÆ that commands a high price in niche ceramic markets. In the Coromandel, some argillic alteration zones contain kaolinite clays (at Hahei) and advanced argillic alteration zones contain kaolinite-gibbsite-pyrophyllite assemblages (at Pumpkin Hill and Lookout Rocks). In addition to known halloysite and kaolinite clay deposits, there is also economic potential for smectite clays produced by hydrothermal alteration of volcanic rocks. Bentonite (mainly ferriferous-beidellite) is mined from weathered basaltic ash in Miocene lake beds at Coalgate in Canterbury.   We have compiled interim mineral deposit profiles for bentonite in basaltic ash, halloysite in rhyolite, kaolinite in altered rhyolitic rocks, kaolinite-gibbsite-pyrophyllite clays in advanced argillic alteration zones and for smectite clays in argillic alteration zones. These deposit profiles include geological and mineralogical attributes, which are linked to the underlying volcanic, hydrothermal and weathering processes that have produced the clay minerals from their source volcanic rocks. Further work on refining the deposit profiles includes characterising the composition of selected deposits to determine spatial trends in mineralogy and geochemistry.

Performance driver trees or KPI trees are reasonably well-known tools for analysing performance in mining operations. However, the tools are often not user friendly. They may be technically correct but they are often clunky. This means they donÆt promote simple management decision-making and donÆt encourage businesses to make them an integrated part of optimising their operations. This paper describes a simple but effective driver tree process and tool that has been successfully implemented and used to aid decision making across a number of mining and processing operations. The important aspects of employing driver trees to assist in management of operations are to ensure that the chosen solution:includes a reporting solution, provides the bottom line impact of the performance indicators, automatically gathers the necessary data that reconciles with existing reports, and is built around a review process that fits with existing management processes. An adequate solution enables operators to identify where there are performance gaps and to quickly prioritise the urgency for addressing these issues. Two case studies are chosen to illustrate the critical success factors of implementing a performance driver tree solution. The first is a large, complex open pit operation. The driver trees, reporting and management processes were initially established for the mining and processing aspects of the operations. Once the initial solution was bedded down, a follow-up project was carried out to establish the equivalent solution for the support areas of the business. The final solution covered stand alone performance driver trees for mining, processing, engineering, maintenance, health and safety, human resources and finance. These individual driver trees were integrated into a total solution that showed how all of the identified KPIÆs impact profit and quantified the dollar impact of all variations. The reporting solution that was put in place automatically creates prioritised lists of variances for the business to address. The second case study is a performance diagnostic project where driver trees were used to assess where gaps in performance were occurring, and then to evaluate the impacts of proposed initiatives.

The Ranger uranium mine has operated in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory since 1979. The mine's water management system was designed to cater for the wet-dry monsoonal climate and to satisfy the recommendations of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry - Second Report, 1977 (The Fox Report) with respect to environment protection. The Fox Report advised that the aquatic ecosystem of the region must be protected and that the mine should collect all runoff from disturbed areas. Furthermore, the mine was to operate as a no-release system until release standards, based on the experience of several years of operation and on the results obtained from monitoring and scientific investigations, could be established. Monitoring and research data have now been collected for a decade. it is evident that lower-than-expected concentrations of chemical constituents are present in the runoff waters which are retained on site. Standards have been established for the release of these waters to the streams when in flood during the wet season. Mine water quality data and release standards are presented. It can be confidently concluded that controlled release will not cause detriment to the aquatic ecosystems of the Kakadu region. The Ranger operation has demonstrated that environmentally responsible management of mine waters is feasible for future mining ventures in the Kakadu region.
