A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. The combined quoted ore reserves at the end of December 1991 was 14Mt grading 1.8 g/t gold

Research to develop the use of L.D.slag as an aggregate in road construc-tion is described. The chemistry and mineralogy of L.D. slags are shown to be generally similar to S. Yorkshire arc furnace slags, which have been success-fully used for road construction for many years, although both free lime and iron contents were found to be higher. Physical and mechanical properties are good but the slags' high density will result in lower "covering capacity"."Weathering" in stock piles is shown to significantly reduce free lime levels fairly rapidly although around 50 per cent of the mean "fresh free lime" content is still present even after two years treatment.

BHP BillitonÆs Yandi channel iron deposit has a large resource of approximately 1.3 billion tonnes. This is a bulk mining operation with a high degree of selectivity not being practical. In contrast the deposit geology is a complex interrelationship of primary channel facies, secondary enrichment of iron and a secondary redistribution of the major contaminants. These variations in geology and alteration can occur over ranges of hundreds of metres down to knife edge contacts. In addition, differences in primary facies and mobility during alteration often result in the iron and contaminants having different patterns of enrichment and depletion. Despite the scale of these operations, if the geological domaining is not optimal, significant errors in the resource estimate of grades and tonnage will occur. Getting the geology right has become a common clichT among mining professionals. However, in many situations, obtaining optimal geological domains for resource modelling is best achieved when there is input from geology, statistics and geostatistics. In this paper, moving window statistics are utilised to see through locally high variability to identify trends that assist in locating difficult to identify geological boundaries. After the creation of geological domains, univariate and multivariate statistics and principal component analysis assist in validating and characterising geological domains. Finally, variography and domain contact analysis are used to analyse the nature of the boundaries between geological domains. At the Yandi channel iron deposit, the inter-relationship between geological and geostatistical analysis has resulted in significant improvements to geological domaining and the treatment of domain boundaries during estimation of iron and contaminates.

This paper deals with change strategies on brownfield and greenfield sites in extractive industries. It draws upon contemporary experiences across Australian, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG). Change strategies can be used when owners of an extractive industry operation want to optimise their resource. This paper draws upon many tried and proven theories and practices, including the findings of the Tavistock Institute (Trist, Emmery, Bamford, Jaques), as well as the concepts of Adult Learning espoused by Malcolm Knowles and is supported by learnings of Australian based management consultants. This paper reviews a range of approaches that have succeeded in the integration of systems, machines and people, with the key corporate objectives of: increasing productivity; decreasing cost; improving on-time delivery performance and achieving long-term survival. Such integration needs to be measured to show the outcomes from the change strategies and the authors have worked within many measurement regimes and metrics but for the most part, found that JaquesÆ set of metrics being æquality, quantity, resources and timeÆ has gained currency across many Australian operations. This paper contends that investing money in machines alone without a commensurate investment into the people side is counter-productive. Further, if there is not an understanding of processes, ie stable and capable, core and support processes, then all that new technologies will do, is to make what is done badly, only quicker. Recent interventions for the most part, have been cognisant of this balanced approach towards change management. The change strategies described are across extractive industry implementations, using a number of tools and techniques drawn from Continuous Improvement and Six SigmaÖ (registered trade and service mark of Motorola Corporation, USA).

A substantial cost is invested into the data collection phase of any exploration or development program; notwithstanding, it is impractical to expect a database of information can be collated to ensure a perfect geological interpretation. The question then becomes, is there a possible alternative interpretation and what is the likely impact of the variations? Modelling in 2005, of the Cosmo lode at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia led to consideration of the philosophical implications associated with resource management. It was concluded that several plausible geological models could be constructed from the known geological database. To varying degrees, this predicament is common to all geological reconstructions, as several alternative geological models can be generated at almost any stage that will impact on the resultant resource estimation and mine plan. The significance of that variation and the associated risk of multiple geological models (MGMs) requires due consideration. What is being suggested is that using plausible multiple geological models advances the holistic understanding of a mineral deposit within the bounds of the data collected, providing fluidity for updating geological knowledge and building inherent variability into the design and planning departments where variations of the geological models may materially impact on the resource performance.

Recent field experiments in the United Kingdom (Buchanan, 1979) have shown that the in-seam technique is capable of detecting a 1m fault in a 3m seam, at a range of 280m and with a resolution of ¦40m. Comparable tests in Australian collieries are proceeding. Although the practicality of an implementation of the technique on a routine basis remains to be demonstrated, the potential of the technique for the prediction of outbursts clearly warrants detailed examination. This potential will,depend, inter alia, on the level and scale of variations in elastic (and anelastic) properties of bodies of coal undergoing stresses associated with mining. Available data, mainly from studies of the seismic properties of gas saturated reservoir rocks, confirm the intuitive view that stress increases give rise to increases in seismic wave velocity and decreases in wave attenuation, markedly at low stresses (as pore spaces close with little resistance) but less so as stress increases. Such increases are of the same order as aniso- tropic effects, but should provide impedance contrast sufficient for detection by in-seam seismic methods. At higher stresses, cracks form within the rock mass. Results from research on earthquake prediction provide some clues to the behaviour of sedimentary rocks sub- jected to large stresses. Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. This paper is intended to give the reader an overview of: Rosebery Mine operations,Rosebery underground refrigeration project,technical difficulties associated with implementing an underground refrigeration system, andkey learnings to date.

WMC Resources Olympic Dam Operation located in South Australia, is a poly metallic underground sublevel open stoping (SLOS) mining operation with a current annual production rate in excess of 9.0 Mt. Stope size, geometries, geotechnical considerations, drilling and blasting are critical components in stope performance. These factors are further influenced by stringent ventilation requirements due to the presence of airborne radioactive contaminants from uranium mineralisation. Stope planning is complex and mass blasting methodologies have been trialled at Olympic Dam with the view to reducing the frequency of stope blasts, improving stope stability, productivity and ultimately improving overall stope performance. A key aspect in the ability to undertake underground mass blasts of this scale is the application of i-konTM electronic initiation technology by Orica. In the past two years in excess of three million tonnes has been initiated utilising this electronic technology, with an average blast of 250 000 t ranging to the largest to date being 580 000 t. By providing flexibility in blast designs, the use of electronic detonators has allowed mass firings over multiple sublevels. This has resulted in a significant reduction in stope extraction steps compared to conventional pyrotechnic firings. The benefits of this reduction in the number of stope blasts are wide ranging from improved stability of interim stope voids between blasts, reduced blasthole damage, improved blast vibration management and reduction of complex changes to ventilation systems for blasting.

The geotechnical and environmental aspects of heap leaching are very closely tied during design, operations and closure. Potential environmental impacts from heap leaching are mostly due to land disturbance and water quality issues, including both groundwater and surface water. Water quality issues are mostly related to containment design, which is primarily a function of proper sizing of the facilities and site specific liner design. Geotechnical analyses is the dominant discipline in providing cost efficient, operationally effective and environmentally sound heap leach facility designs. Much has been published on geotechnical aspects of heap leach design, for example Van Zyl, Hutchison and Kiel (1988) and Van Zyl (1987). This paper will emphasize a few specific aspects related to the geotechnical and environmental consideration for heap leach projects. These aspects are: ò site investigation; ò containment design; ò slope stability; ò heap flow dynamics; and ò closure design. Design of a heap leach project must consider not only the operating life but also closure and post-closure considerations. As a matter of standard practice, designing for closure is an extremely important concept. Not only is it important for environmental aspects, but experience also shows that projects designed for closure will be overall more economical for the total life cycle of the project. Closure considerations are also important during project feasibility evaluations to ensure that total life cycle costs are evaluated.

The fine grained complex orebody at Elura contains galena, silver and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite; sulphides account for about 90% of the orebody. A differential flotation circuit is operated to con- centrate lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The metallurgical performance to date indicates the need for improvement. The lead section has been sampled in detail to comprehensively assess its overall performance and to define problems associated with lead and silver flotation. The substantial amount of pyrite in the feed dominated the perfor- mance of each stage of the separation. It was responsible for extensive dilution of all concentrates and, as a consequence, for very large circulating loads. The rougher concentrate contained 68% pyrite some of which was rejected through the three stages of cleaning to 39% in the final concen- trate. However, this was still sufficient to hold the assay of this product below 45% Pb. Size by size behaviour shows that flotation rates of the valuable minerals, as characterised by their rate coefficients, were low through- out the circuit. There was a significant deterioration in these rates between rougher and cleaner I stages which resulted in large circulating loads between these stages. There was practically no recovery of coarse valu- able minerals to the final concentrate. The dilution of the final concen- trate by non-sulphide gangue was not a major problem. If the recovery of the galena and silver in the +38¦m size range could be raised to that of the - 381Lm size range, galena recovery would rise from 78% to 86% and silver recovery would improve from 46% to 59%. The Pb grade of the final concentrate would remain the same.

Interactions between structure and lithology in the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone controlled the style of gold mineralisation at the Macraes mine. Large volumes of rock in some mine pits have most gold disseminated in hydrothermally altered schist, rather than in quartz veins. Mineralisation was initiated in the latter stages of metamorphism. Pods of massive schist rich in quartz and feldspar are surrounded by more fissile schist consisting of interlayered micaceous and quartzofeldspathic schist. Later shears have been partly controlled by the micaceous schist, and anastomose around pods of more massive schist. Micaceous schist was replaced by pyrite and arsenopyrite, accompanied by recrystallisation of phengitic muscovite under lower greenschist facies conditions. Gold occurs in sulfides and with microcrystalline quartz formed during minor silicification. Massive schist is locally mineralised along sulfidic microshears which have phengitic muscovite largely illitised under sub-greenschist facies conditions. Mineralised massive and micaceous schists were overprinted by cataclastic shears, with addition of graphite and more sulfides. Mineralisation occurred during a transition from ductile to brittle deformation regimes as the schist was uplifted in the late Jurassic.

It will describe the processing of the different ores, issues faced and operating and technical innovations that occurred during that period. This will include: commissioning on very high grade Cu ores, treatment of high Sulfur feed ores (~46 per cent S) and the effects of the installation of a Detritor Mill on the process.

Three, and possibly four, distinct types of quartz-vein associated gold mineralisation are recognised in New Zealand. They are: epithermal, schist-hosted, metagreywacke-hosted and metamorphic core complex associated types. Each has a unique geological environment and structural regime which has provided the gold source, scavenging mechanism, emplacing mechanism and geometry. Each has a characteristic suite of associated metals and trace elements. The first three types form economically important gold deposits while the fourth type have been historically worked for gold and base metals. Intense exploration is currently being focussed on all four types.The epithermal type is typified by the extensive vein systems of Martha Hill, Karangahake and Golden Cross and numerous smaller examples. The veins were deposited in a near surface active volcanic environment from deeply circulating hot water. Their structure is tensional, veins are vertical-to sub-vertical and have limited depth. Their geochemistry is identical to that in active felsic hydrothermal centres in the central North Island. Major minerals are gold, pyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and argentite.

With increasing demand for more efficient production from the underground coal mines in the Southern Coalfields- of New South Wales, their design and operational aspects are constantly being reviewed and improved. One key area in such pursuits is the reliable design of stable and yielding pillars. The current designs of pillars based mostly on experience leads to unnecessary sterilisation of coal or strata control problems. To explore such mine design problems, computer based modelling is increasingly being applied. In the study described in this paper, the object was to determine the particular width of pillars separating three roadways in a panel at which the pillars yielded completely and their loads largely transferred to the unmined coal at the flanks of the panel. This was approached through a computer simulation of the behaviour of the strata around a panel, in which the three roadways were separated by pillars of progressively decreasing width. A computer program called FLAC based on the finite difference method was used to simulate the relevant strata behaviour in vertical sections. The appropriate in situ values of the deformability parameters relating to the coal seam, roof and floor were determined from the back analysis of some displacement measurements in such a panel. The process involved successive modelling of a vertical section through such a panel,starting with realistic values of the parameters and varying them until the measured and the modelled displacements agreed closely. Based on the results of the numerical modelling, the width of a yielding pillar for the given conditions is Suggested.

Material hardness and environmental factors can limit or restrict conventional blasting techniques and this has led to advancements in the performance and efficiency of ripping. Not all materials can be ripped, however today's technology and experience can help make a reasonable prediction. A ripping versus blasting decision will depend on the total volume of material to be moved, the production capabilities and costs of the ripping tractor(s) and on the size and relative efficiency of drilling and Blasting.

Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. The present day configuration of the deposit results from constructive thrust repetition of what may have been a single ore lens and destructive along-strike disruption controlled by rheology.CITATION:Blenkinsop, T G, Macklin, D and Hammond, R, 2015. In the present work, the process of dephosphorisation of stainless steel was developed in laboratory scale by adopting a high frequence induction furnace, using BaCO3 base flux. By using BaCO3 - CaO - BaC12 - Fe2O3 Flux of about 110 g/Kg-metal, 30 per cent dephosphorisation degree was obtained a stainless steel containing 18,8 per cent Cr and carbon between 0,08 and 2,0 per cent. In addition, a dessulfurisation degree of 89 per cent was achieved too.

Most base and precious metal mineralisation in the Gympie Province is genetically linked to intrusion of branitoids of Late Permian to Late Triassic age. Most lodes are hydrothermal quartz and quartz-calcite veins at intrusive contacts, within either the granitoids themselves or the country rocks, and commonly associated with dykes. Other types of intrusive related deposits are disseminated porphyry type Cu, base metals in skarns, and Mo in quartz pipes and veins. Although the Late Permian-Late Triassic granitic intrusives can be subdivided in terms of age, it is not yet possible to relate deposits of particular metals or styles to granites of a specific age on a regional scale.Some significant mineralisation is not associated with granitic intrusions. This includes the Gympie goldfield, by far the largest known deposit within the Gympie Province. Gold occurs in quartz veins crosscutting Early Permian volcaniclastic sediments and also in NW striking fault zones. The source of the mineralisation is unknown. Gold and silver also occur in epithermal, disseminated and breccia hosted deposits within Late Triassic continental volcanics. Epithermal Hg mineralisation at Kilkivan may be related to Early-Middle Triassic volcanics.

The St George orebodies are situated within the tectonically disrupted eastern limb of the Boogardie Syncline.Highly disturbed rafts of banded chert formations occur within a sequence of felsic volcanic tuffs. The chert forms the hostrock for the gold mineralization.The gold distribution within the irregular and narrow banded chert formations is erratic and patchy. The average gold content of the two orebodies is between 3 - 4 g/t Au.Economic mining of these relative small, irregular and low grade St. George orebodies can be carried out by using a highly selective mining method.The highly selective mining method uses an excavator as the principle mining tool. Blasting, breaking and loading of the rocks is done in a different way than by using a front-end loader as with the conventional mining method. Simple, and therefore cheaper, blasting breaks the rocks and lifts them up without major displacements.
