The Hodgkinson and Broken River Provinces form the northern part of the Tasman Orogen. They are separated by a broad belt of Late Palaeozoic igneous rocks, but were probably originally continuous. They are bounded to the west by a system of major faults (Fig. 1) which separate them from the Georgetown Province. Although largely Precambrian, the Georgetown Province includes probable Siluro- Devonian granitoids, and in the south adjacent to the Broken River Province, metamorphosed Early Palaeozoic(?) volcanics and sediments of the Greenvale Subprovince. South of the Broken River Province, the Lolworth-Ravenswood Province includes probable Precambrian rocks, Cambro-Ordovician volcanics and sediments, and voluminous Ordovician to Early Devonian granitoids. The first systematic studies of the provinces were the 1:250 000 scale mapping programs by the Bureau of Mineral Resources and Geological Survey of Queensland (White, 1965; de Keyser and Lucas, 1968). These and subsequent regional studies were reviewed by Arnold and Fawckner (1980). Remapping by the Geological Survey of Queensland since 1982, and a concurrent regional study of the deformation by Hammond (1986) have provided much new data. In June 1995, BHP announced that it would build a Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant and associated beneficiation, materials handling and infrastructure facilities at Port Hedland, Western Australia. This plant, the first direct reduction plant in Australia, will convert beneficiated iron ore fines into metallic iron for briquetting into HBI. The reduction plant will be based on the FINMET fluid bed technology jointly developed by Fior de Venezuela and Voest-Alpine Industrienlagenbau. Electric Arc Furnace steelmakers in the Asia Pacific region will be the principal customers for the product. This paper presents an overview of the facilities to be constructed by the project as well as discussing some particular technology and design engineering issues associated with the project.

A probabilistic approach is proposed for updating open pit slope sta- bility based on successful performance. The suggested approach is developed within the framework of Bayesian probability theory. In seeking solutions to geomechanics problems consideration must be given to inher- ent variability of shear strength parameters and to the errors in the esti- mation of these parameters. The latter can be significant and may lead to consistent overestimation or underestimation of the values derived from site investigation and testing. Conventional deterministic methods of slope stability analysis do not allow systematic modelling of uncertainties in applied loads or in shear strength parameters. Within a probabilistic framework indicators of stability may be calculated, e.g., the reliability index and the probability of failure. Based on observation of slope per- formance at any given stage of a project, the mean or the standard devi- ation (or both) of a shear strength parameter may be updated. Consequently the indicators of stability can also be updated. The appli- cation of such an approach is demonstrated by an illustrative example.

As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS¬ Expert system together with three VisioRockÖ online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS¬ is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia PacificÆs (MMPT-AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS¬ logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). A nuclear technique utilising the gamma-ray resonance scattering process is used at Isa Mine for the determination of copper in drill core and bulk mineral samples. The Copper Bulk Analyser (CBA) provides quick and accurate non-destructive copper analysis of drill core at costs two to three times cheaper than conventional chemical techniques.The almost immediate availability of sample results enhances the efficiency of the mine geologist in the duties of grade control, design of diamond drilling programmes, and input to planning. The unit has proven to be a reliable and accurate production tool requiring a minimum of technical support.

In flotation, the property that is exploited to effect the separation of a mineral from an ore is referred to as its floatability. Assessment and quantification of ore floatability is of fundamental importance in modelling and simulation of flotation circuits. This paper describes the design, construction and operation of a new laboratory flotation rig that has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to determine the floatability of different ores on a small-sale. The rig is designed for continuous operation. The major features of the rig are highlighted in this paper. An unique characteristic of the rig is a 9.1 L conditioning vessel. This provides a mixing regime close to plug-flow which avoids complications such as different collector coverages for similarly sized particles (which would considerably increase the complexity of ore floatability determination). The main advantages of this rig when compared to conventional batch flotation cells include better control of the chemical environment and the ability to determine froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery with increased accuracy. Preliminary tests undertaken with a high-grade lead/zinc ore from BHP Cannington are presented demonstrating the good level of reproducibility obtainable in operating the equipment.

Human habitation of the Pacific Rim began when mankind began migrations out of its place of origin in the Rift Valley of Central Africa c. 4million years ago. This migration was erratic and largely controlled by advances and retreat of the various Ice Ages which, while limiting advances in areas of intense cold, at the same time aided migration thro-ugh the creation of land bridges as ocean levels declined during periods of glacial advance (Fig.l).Mankind began its trek to the Pacific from Africa across India then north into southern China and south into Indonesia (Fig.2). In part, these migrations stimulated early technological develop-ments to fulfill needs and adapt to environmental conditions; thus, these nomads developed stone and bone tools, animal skin clothing and the use of caves and other simple shelters. The earliest evid-ence of mankind's use of fire can be found at Zhou-koudaian near Beijing, c.400,000 BP.From China, the completion of the Pacific Rim's population can be attributed to the last Ice Age that dropped the ocean level by more than 300 feet and created land bridges about 40,000 BP allowing migration across the Bering Strait into Alaska and to Australia from Indonesia. The American migration reached Mexico about 30,000 BP, and by 6000 BP the occupancy of the Pacific Rim was complete when the first human settlers reached the southern tip of Chile.

Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Four quartz latite rheoignimbrite units (units I to IV) mapped in the Goboboseb Mountains have been traced to their eruptive source, the Messum intrusive complex; this is a complex multistage ring structure (18 km diameter) with well defined gabbroic, monzonitic, and syenitic intrusive phases, and a central ring zone containing mixed rhyolitic to latitic agglomerates. Three of the four quartz latite units are correlated with the upper and lower (2 units) Springbok quartz latites outcropping some 90-130 km north of McIsum. This implies minimum volumes of 300-500 km for wits I and III (Lower Springbok) and 2200-2600 km for unit IV (Upper Springbok). This latter unit is still ti 300 m thick at its outcrop limit, some 130 km from Messum. Each of the four units represents single cooling units. Lithologically, each can be divided into three zones: A basal, dark grey to black flinty or glassy zone, often with highly attenuated fiamme (ressembling flow banding); a central massive and strongly recrystallised zone; and an upper variable zone which exhibit breccias, contorted flow banding, and amygdaloidal to pumiceous clasts. Their overall characteristics tend to be intermediate between ash flows and lava flows. The rheoignimbrites are interpreted as the oproducts of dense, high temperature (950¦-1100 C) ash flows which underwent rheomorphism and lava-like flow prior to their final cooling.These large scale eruptions are related to the initial rifting of Africa and S. America, possiby in response to a major hot spot.

The use of long-hole in-seam drilling techniques for seam gas drainage ahead of mining was introduced to the Australian coal industry by ACIRL in mid-1981. ACIRL's research program has involved the development and demonstration of drilling and borehole survey technology in addition to evaluating the gas drainage potential of long-hole in- seam boreholes. This paper presents the results of the long-hole drilling carried out to date in the Illawarra District of the New South Wales coal fields. Drilling experience in relation to both vertical and horizontal directional control of the drill string, drill performance and borehole survey techniques are discussed. In addition, results of gas drainage effected by the long boreholes are presented. Future potential and requirements for further development of this technology are Reviewed.

The comminution process indicates that the most energy-efficient comminution system would be one where the particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. Contrary to the free falling gravitational (vertical) flow in crushers, the grinding millÆs energy efficiency essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles, which in turn depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) operates. The essential function of a pulp lifter is to transport the broken material and slurry from the discharge grate out of the mill. Hence, the design optimisation of pulp lifters affects not only the energy efficiency and throughput of autogenous grinding/semi-autogenous (AG/SAG) grinding mills, but also contributes other process benefits such as improved wear life and operator-friendly steady and smooth mill operation. Following its introduction in 2006, OutotecÆs patented Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLÖ) design has been retrofitted at existing sites and also installed in some new ones around the world. This paper will provide operational experience and data on how the TPLÖ design has allowed AG and SAG mills to operate efficiently.

The design and selection of components for belt conveyors is a well known procedure and many handbooks, catalogues and design manuals offer a wide range of detailed information which can be applied to most of the known conveyor problems. The aim of this paper, however, is to investigate the various methods of conveyor drive configurations, and incorporate the latest technical achievements in the control systems, particularly for high capacity conveyor systems carrying ore from pit to processing plants where the lowest maintenance, operating and initial costs are of major importance. Past experience has proven that multi pulley drives can reduce initial capital cost of a conveyor; this leads to the need for better torque control during startup, running, stopping and load sharing. Many methods of torque control are available and have been used in the past. All types have their advantages and disadvantages and must be considered when designing a conveyor or conveyor system. However the recently developed solid state electronic soft start controls utilising AC squirrel cage induction motors are gaining acceptance, especially for a conveyor system where the same control and logic system can be used to transmit startup commands to more than one

Segmental tunnel linings are becoming more common in Australia. One current project employing a segmental lining is the City West Cable Tunnel (CWCT) in Sydney. The project has been commissioned by Energy Australia and is currently being constructed by Thiess Pty Ltd. The project includes 1.6 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven, segmentally lined tunnel. The majority of the CWCT will be excavated through Hawkesbury Sandstone. The tunnel is required to carry a 132 kV electrical circuit under SydneyÆs central business district (CBD), between Haymarket and Energy AustraliaÆs City North Substation on Sussex Street. The segmental lining has been designed as a 3.2 m internal diameter, 200 mm thick universal ring with six trapezoidal segments. The design and detailing of this segmental lining presents some noteworthy challenges, including exposure to saline groundwater, and the exclusive use of steel fibres for flexural and tensile concrete reinforcement. This paper describes some of the key elements of the segmental lining design. These include:the case for choosing segmental linings over other forms of tunnel construction;the major design checks required of a segmental lining including ground loading, hydrostatic loading, joint bearing, joint rotation, ram loading and the early strength lifting case;the benefits of using steel fibres over conventional steel reinforcement;the design approach used for steel fibre reinforced concrete;the application of 3D computer modelling in the design;the provision for components including connector dowels and gaskets;the design for passive fire resistance; andthe design for durability of steel fibre reinforced concrete in a saline environment. Segmental lining design requires the application of specialist design approaches. Input is required by the construction team, as the methods of demoulding, handling, transportation and installation impact on the lining design. As the segmental lining is functioning as immediate ground support and also a permanent lining, high standards of manufacture and construction quality control are required to ensure that the 100-year design life is met. The requirement for a watertight tunnel means that detailing and installation of the EPDM gaskets is of importance.

The current copper ore handling systems in use at Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 33 years old and have hoisted over 160 Mt at a rate of around 6 Mtpa. The mineÆs production profile is increasing in line with the optimum life of mine plan to over 6.6 Mtpa, which requires a system utilisation and reliability above that previously achieved. Copper ore is hoisted up the U62 shaft, which forms the central part of the U62 ore handling system. In theory this system can cope with the duty planned if the bottleneck is only the U62 winder. To achieve the planned production rate will require increased focus on reliability of each component in the ore handling system so that ore is available at the shaft for hoisting whenever the shaft is available, and the shaft is available for the maximum practical time. Increased availability will be achieved through the outcomes of the study of each component in the U62 system, and the internal ore handling systems that deliver ore from as far as 2 km laterally and 700 m vertically from the U62 shaft. The true capacity of each component is being determined and current performance is being measured with the aim of improving performance through root cause analysis and engineering out the causes of delays. The program began in March 2004 and this paper describes the progress achieved as of April 2005.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become.more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width- to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

An airlift pump is fitted to the screw conveyor of a decanter type centrifuge in order to pump out soft cakes which are difficult to discharge from a standard decanter. The new patented2 design improves separation performance and allows more stable operation, particularly when operating the decanter as a thickener.

New Zealand is an exposed part of a sub- continent that was detached from Australia when the Tasman Sea opened in the Late Cretaceous. The pre-separation rocks occur in three main belts. A western belt or terrane was part of Antarctica, was continuous with southern Australian rocks, and was moved eastwards in the Mid Devonian. A central belt of Hokonui and Caples rocks can be correlated broadly with the Gympie Terrane of eastern Queensland. It was an island arc, fore-arc basin and accretionary wedge system, and it was accreted to eastern Australasia in the Mid Triassic. The third belt consists of Torlesse rocks and was possibly emplaced over the Caples rocks by at least three pulses of strike-slip, in the Triassic, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous. The three episodes of strike-slip can be correlated with regional events in eastern Australia. Pre-Cainozoic New Zealand was an amalgam of terranes that had moved eastwards from south of Australia and southwards from east of Australia.

With increased pressure for companies to cut costs during design of new mineral processing plants, overall plant design has changed over the last decade with less design for feed blending and less installed surge capacity. This has changed the operability of new mineral processing plants, where disturbances due to variable ore types have resulted in the evolution of new control techniques. These techniques are necessary to maintain stability and optimise the performance of these new plants. This paper describes the benefit of applying these new control techniques in a new mineral processing plant in Australia utilising RockwellÆs ControlLogix system architecture.
