Full aerodynamic design development of the proposed fans for the enlarged primary ventilation system at Mount Isa Mines Limited was initiated before tender specifications were prepared. Theoretical and analytical design studies were made of many possibilities to determine the optimum proposal. Major considerations were efficiency, simplicity, standardization, and mechanical feasibility. Model testing and experimental work covered blading design, inlet shape, diffuser and tail fairing dimensions, instrumentation requirements, ancl noise studies.Theoretical and predicted performance estimates were prepared for the three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans.

An efficient filtration plant can be designed only from an adequate knowledge of the filtration characteristics of the material to be handled; if these characteristics can be expressed in the form of an equation the work of design is simplified immensely. The literature of the subject contains numerous equations which have been developed by various workers to express their results, usually obtained from a 'Very limited class of material, and from moderately thick pulps. Such expressions have been found quite unsuited for use in the case of thin, very free filtering pulps.In 1926, Underwood put forward an equation having a general for m, and which, he was able to show, provided a satisfactory expression of the data obtained and published by a large number of earlier workers. This equation has been found a very satisfactory and useful tool for the study of a variety of filtration problems. Clyde Materials Handling (CMH) and WorleyParsons have developed a concept for a flash furnace feed system using the specialist pneumatic conveying equipment expertise of CMH and the flash furnace process experience of WorleyParsons. CMH has developed a proprietary volumetric feeder (called a Rotofeed), which is extremely accurate and overcomes many of the problems inherent with loss-in-weight screw feeders and drag chain conveyors, previously regarded as state-of-the-art. Initial indications are that the Clyde-WorleyParsons feed system could deliver the following benefits to flash furnace operation: accurate pulseless delivery of feed material to the head of the burner leading to improved combustion performance and process stability; highly accurate split to the individual quadrants of a conventional burner tube, or provision of a smooth hollow curtain to a burner without guide vanes; decreased pressure pulsation in the furnace due to improved combustion control and performance; and decreased temperature fluctuations in the furnace due to improved combustion characteristics and hence reductions in refractory thermal stress and wear.

With production at Olympic Dam scheduled to commence in June 1988, it has been necessary to install a complete underground ore handling system capable of removing two million tonnes of material annually from the mine. The system comprises mucking from stope drawpoints, truck haulage to underground storage, primary crushing, conveying and hoisting. On the surface, material is conveyed to stockpiles at the Metallurgical Plant. Mining of the numerous special excavations within the system was incorporated into the mine's ongoing development program prior to the underground construction phase. Utilisation of a decline from the surface enabled versatile construction equipment to operate at the underground sites as well as simplifying the transportation and delivery of construction Materials.

Consideration was given to the.applicab on of a solvent extraction circuit to be'included in the process'for the-recovery of a high grade product from.:-the Rum Jungle Creek.South uranium ore body.The economics of two alternative processes, firstly the Eluex process which uses an ion exchange process followed by solvent extraction.-of a.high grade sulphuric acid eluate, and secondly a process using direct solvent' extractioh of pregnant leach liquor, were studied. There was a small cost advantage favouring the Eluex process but when other factors were considered, the installation of a direct solvent extraction process appeared the better long term investment. A solvent extraction plant was installed at Rum Jungle in 1962.

Studies of 13C/12C ratios of carbon dioxide in seam gases and in secondary calcites show that 1. In mines prone to carbon dioxide outbursting, the source of this gas is external to the coal. 2. Faults draining reservoirs of magmatic or primary carbon dioxide, rather than intrusives, are the most likely points of entry of carbon dioxide into mines. 3. The higher the concentration of carbon dioxide in seam gas and the wetter the mine, the lower the likelihood of secondary calcite occurring as a filling in cleats, fractures etc. 4. A -role played by carbon dioxide in promoting outbursting may be the conversion of calcite to soluble bicarbonate, the removal of this in mine water and the subsequent weakening of the resistance of the bulk coal to stress.

This paper aims to show alternatives to the estimation methods used for finding the parameters in GyÆs well known model for sampling variance in the case of particulate materials. Many experiments designed for gathering data on the sampling variance for specific mineral deposits allow the experimenter to use approximations in the calculation of the parameters of the mathematical model involved, which sometimes can be very useful. However, there are some instances where approximations lead to biased estimates of the parameters, and consequently, lead to errors in the establishment of the sampling protocol and treatment of quality control data. In the present work, an alternative is presented for computing the parameter values based in any experimental set up, without the need for any simplification. The method was derived using the method of least squares and evaluations are made using the usual tools in this kind of methodology: residual analysis and evaluation of the fit by means of a plot of calculated versus experimental variances. With the aid of these tools, one can better evaluate the structure of the experimental errors in such applications, and the adherence to the proposed model. In addition, it is possible to perform hypothesis testing for the equality of different sampling procedures in terms of sampling variance. The full mathematical details are given, together with an algorithm for applying the method, which can be implemented easily using any computer language. An illustration of the method is shown, considering the international work done in ISO/TC 102. This example is a determination of the minimum sample mass to be collected in iron ore shipments, in order to achieve a specified sampling precision.

The use of monitors to assess equipment performance is carried out on a routine basis in many industries. The benefits gained through process control in knowing exactly how the equipment is working far outweigh the initial capital costs of the monitor. In the mining industry several dragline monitors have been developed and installed on equipment through out the world, but to date none has been fully accepted by the industry. This paper describes the use of a sophisticated monitoring system which incorporates an onboard processor to assess both dragline and blast performance. The results of a case study are presented and an indication of the potential of the monitoring system to optimise mine production is given.

Martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits that show no trace of hydrothermal alteration may extend to more than 200 m below the permanent water table and are typically saprolite with evidence of exposure to the physical, chemical and biogenic processes of soil formation restricted to the low-grade goethitised upper levels. Typically no evidence of the prior presence of chert bands is discernable within the ore yet it has been assumed that these ore deposits derive from cherty banded iron formation (BIF) through supergene leaching of the chert bands and thus classified as supergene iron ore deposits. The fact that chert bands are absent and that these ore deposits are highly weathered does not prove supergene leaching of the chert bands. Quartz is one of the most resistant minerals to chemical weathering within the saprolite and large scale dissolution of quartz is absent from all other quartz-bearing saprolites, yet this unlikely process is accepted without question as the origin of the most abundant form of high-grade iron ore deposits. It is proposed that martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits formed only from BIF in which chert bands were absent prior to weathering. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A Devonian metallogenic province is extended northwards from central Queen- -sland to the Burdekin Basin in the Charters Towers Gold and Mineral Field. Devonian sediments of the Burdekin Basin are intruded by mineralised quartz felspar porphyry which occurs as pebbles in Upper Devonian conglomerate. A mineralised volcanic complex lies on the crest of an anticline in Devonian sediments.Red siltstone is slurried and reduced to pyritic hornfels over folded limestone.A thick wedge of volcanogenic conglomerate overlain by marine shale lies on the mineralised rim of an ocean which suffered cataclysmic changes during Late Devonian times.

To counter depressed world nickel prices, a continuing effort is being made at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to reduce unit production costs. One major area in which production costs can be reduced is the substitution of coal for fuel oil. Two areas where this has been achieved to bring about a saving are, the addition of coal to flash furnace flux to reduce supplementary fuel oil requirements in flash smelting and the replacement of two oil-fired air preheaters with a coal-fired unit. These actions have resulted in coal replacing 67% of the current fuel oil requirement in flash smelting at the Kalgoorlie .Lckel Smelter.

A regional scale prospectivity model was developed for Papua New Guinea (PNG) to identify areas of porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Weights of evidence modeling techniques were used to determine spatial correlations between porphyry Cu-Au mines and predictive maps created from available spatial data. These predictive maps were then combined into a final prospectivity map. Despite limited regional scale data the model has successfully identified areas of known porphyry mineralisation as prospective and has also identified areas where new mineralised systems may be discovered with further exploration. Borehole radar is a proven geophysical technology that can be used to map an orebody ahead of mining. This paper will present a case study, where borehole radar is being used within the mining cycle to map out orebody blocks, both as a strategic and tactical tool. Refined equipment and procedures now enables a slimline borehole radar tool to be deployed on the end of drill rods, making it easier and faster to deploy in an underground mine with minimal impact on the mining process. Boreholes are drilled in advance of mining; cover holes to ensure the competence of the hanging wall and geology holes to determine the location and grade of ore are two such examples. All of these boreholes can be entered using a borehole radar tool to map geology and structure ahead. The radar data can provide images of the orebody as well as help detect potential water bearing structures that could impact on safety at a mining face.

Several methods are available for inspections of mine shafts. These involve use of inclinometers, moving beams, inertial platforms and decelerometers. Inspections which use decelerometers are of most interest since they allow assessment of conditions of shaft steelwork, conveyances and the shaft itself. This assessment is based on recording and analysing dynamic behaviour of shaft conveyances. Sample inspections of several WA shafts confirm feasibility of using this method for periodic shaft Inspections.

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

Problems of the creation of an automated cartographic system for environmental condition estimation and forecasting in mining region are discussed in this paper. The Geographic Information System (GIS) ARC/INFO is offered as the platform for such a system. A breadboard model of the system was tested on the example of Kemerovo province (Kuznetsk coal basin), the most ecologically impacted mining region of Russia. As a result parameters of territorial distribution of integrated adverse environmental impact of the industrial enterprises are reviewed. Administrative regions of Kemerovo province were rated according to a degree of environmental pollution. Further, specific weight of various industries in pollution of region is determined.

The mining production rate of two million tonnes per annum at Olympic Dam required greater servicing capacity than was available with the existing Whenan Shaft. To increase servicing capability a Service Decline was constructed from June 1986 to June 1987 extending 2000 m from the surface and linking up with inclining development from the existing Whenan Shaft workings. The decline was used for access of all men and materials during the construction phase of the ore handling system. During production, most mine servicing will be via the decline with hoisting of rock through Whenan Shaft.

Techniques appropriate to petrographic image analysis are being developed using digitized backscatter electron images of well characterized mineral assemblages obtained from a Cameca scanning electron microprobe. Emphasis is on developing descriptors for size, shape and association of mineral grains as these all convey important information concerning the nature of rocks and the processes that have operated upon them. Processes, for example, that could indicate the proximity of mineralization. For convenience, the work is being carried out on the PDP11/73 host computer of the electron micropt be, although it is recongnized that such a multi-user environment is not appropriate for practical image analysis. The eventual aim is to develop a low-cost microcomputer-based package for quantitative description of mineral textures and rock fabrics as an objective aid to the petrographic analysis of ores and host rocks.

Mining of the southern 1900 copper Orebody presented a challenge due to the complex geology, geometry and simultaneous extraction of the nearby lead/zinc/silver orebody. An integrated and co-operative approach was adopted, involving geology, geomechanics, mine planning and production personnel. Successful extraction of the first 1900 Orebody stope, T496, together with the extraction of the first two lead/zinc/silver panel stopes in the immediate hangingwall of the 1900 Orebody stope was achieved as a result of this approach.
