Diamond drilling is a relatively new commodity in terms of drilling. The first known diamond drilling activities were carried out in the Swiss Alps around 1863 when the Swiss engineer M Leschot designed and made a tube with a diamond set face which was used in probing ahead drilling for the Mont Cenis tunnel (Figure 1). Craelius AB which today is a part of the Atlas Copco Group was formed in 1886. The name Craelius is a family name and the founder of the company was Per Anton Craelius (Figure 2). He went to the United States to study this new technology using diamonds to extract core samples and when he returned to Sweden designed his first diamond drilling machine. It was a man-powered drill needing a crew of six men, two to crank the unit, one to feed, two to power the flush pump and a foreman (Figure 3). As time passed through research and development, the original design was improved and manpower was substituted for steam engines and later combustion engines or electric motors (Figure 4). During the 1930s the drills radically changed designs and took the form of the short stroke drills which to a certain extent are still in use today. The original design of these drills have been refined during the years, hydraulic chucks, gear boxes and other improvements have been added.

The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.

FaulIing west of the Mount Isa mine is described and is shown to be related to three groups of folds that have been recognized in the area. The first period of faulting postdates the first generation folding; these faulIs are regional faults (tectonic discontinuities) which are folded by second generation folds. The faulting accompanying the second generation folding divides the area west of the Mount Isa mine into four structurally and metamorphically identifiable blocks. The most prominent of these second generation faults is the Mount Isa Fault, which is characterized by a number of distinct zones of intense second generation folding and the presence of localized layers of mylonite. Only limited evidence for brittle deformation has been observed and the major movement appears to be associated with the plastic deformation of the rocks. Confined to the areas of second generation folding in the Mount Isa Fault are numerous third generation kink folds. A detailed description of the Mount Isa and other faulIs is presented together with evidence for their existence. The displacement accompanying this faulting cannot be established because of the complexity of the structure.Postdating these faults and all the folding of the area are minor cross faults.

Past experience with fully bonded cable dowels placed as a means of reinforcement in highly stressed crop pillars at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine indicated such support was not fully effective. Typically overbreak of the crown occurred leaving long lengths of cables hanging from the back stripped of grout and rock with the potential load carrying capacity of the cables not having been fully utilised. This mode of behaviour had been observed in the cable dowelled crowns of three longhole open stopes (EROS) mined to the No. 12 level at NBHC. A system of support with improved mechanism of load transfer from rock to cable and capable of full utilisation of cable strength was proposed for the crown pillars of future Stopes.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is a society of engineers and scientists formed in 1893 (incorporated by Royal Charter in 1955) to advance science and engineering in the mineral industries, and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas to enhance the professional excellence of its members. Members are drawn from all sections of the industry - private enterprise, government, research, education, and the support sector, including consultancies, manufacturers and suppliers. From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gippsland Mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695 kg of gold, which at 1980 prices represents a value significantly in excess of $200 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subsequent occupants of the lease produced an additional 160 kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. Norwich Park Mine commenced production of export coking coal in November 1979. Attention to consumables control was limited during the early running of the plant. Once higher than anticipated magnetite consumption levels were confirmed, efforts were directed at determining the causes. Extensive plant sampling, monitor- ing of operational procedures and plant modif- ications have led to a significant reduction in magnetite usage.

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy have been used to study a range of solid state and aqueous solution species which are of interest in extractive metallurgy. In the solid state new Cu(II)/CN'/NH3 complexes have been detected, iron impurities in kaolin characterised, aluminium substitution in hematite and goethite quantified, and the crystallinity and orientation of zircon determined in heterogeneous crystals. In aqueous solution metal cyanide complexes and equilibria were readily characterised, the thermal decomposition of SO2 monitored and products identified, and complexation of AI(III) by hydroxycarboxylates observed. Attempts to monitor the early stages of the gelling of silicate solutions were less successful, with only changes in the gel being detected. However, the degradation of 12-tungstosilicic acid was readily monitored as a function of both time and pH.

The Truong Son Fold belt in Indochina hosts the significant Sepon gold-copper district (Laos) and the similar gold-basemetal districts of Phuoc Son and Bong Mieu (Vietnam). With over seven years of exploration, Toronto-listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc, is one of few foreign companies that have to date made a substantial investment in mineral exploration in Vietnam.Much of this work has been conducted along the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture, on the south-eastern limb of the Truong Son Fold belt on the Vietnamese side of the border with Laos. These programs have produced a significant number of gold prospects at varying stages of exploration development. The Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture is a major Paleozoic subduction zone that extends from northern Laos, through Central Vietnam and out into the South China Sea.It represents a Lower Mesozoic collision zone between the Paleozoic-age Truong Son fold-belt terrain to the north, with the crystalline terrain of the Pre-Cambrian Kontum Block to the south. Since its formation, it has been a locus of deep faulting, continental accretion, intensive intrusive activity and mineralisation. This paper briefly discusses the geological setting, structure, metamorphism, mineralisation, exploration history, and proposed mining development of the Olympus Phuoc Son Gold Project, with particular reference to the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky suture.

This paper examines the various stages of development and design work which were necessary to develop the cemented rock fill system for copper mining at Mount Isa. The reason for a cemented sand fill development program together with details of the test work undertaken are briefly outlined. The testwork associated with the selection of a suitable local rock to supple- ment the cemented hydraulic fill is discussed, as is the method for underground placement and mixing of the graded rock with the cemented hydraulic fill. The design features of the final system which incorporates a graded rock handling system and a cemented hydraulic fill reticula- tion system is outlined.

An increase in pig iron output by 50 per cent was aimed at after re-lining No.2 blast furnace of NAKAYAMA STEEL WORKS. This had to be achieved by increasing both the furnace volume (from 673 to 757 m3) and its productivity, Without equipment for high top pressure operation, high productivity was mainly attained by the following three measures; (1) improving the gas flow characteristics by maintaining a high ratio of agglomerated ores, increasing the strength of sinter and coke, and optimizing the charge distribution, (2) decreasing the fuel ratio by low Si operation and the use of hot blast, and (3) oxygen enrichment. In addition, the tapping controls for pig iron and slag were intensified. As a result of the above measures an excellent hot metal output of 2.7 tonne/m3/day was attained in April 1979 (monthly average).

The average installed refrigeration capacity on South African gold mines has increased by about eighteen per cent annually for the past 15 years; both the number of installations and their duties have increased. One consequence of these large refrigeration installations is that careful attention must be paid to the system for distributing cold water. In these distribution systems, devices which minimize the temperature rise of the water delivered to the underground workings and which also reduce the pumping requirements for returning the water back to surface are used. In this paper the suitability of these various devices are examined and with the aid of a specially developed computer program their optimum operating conditions are determined. In addition the optimum combination of surface and underground refrigeration plants is examined for a hypothetical mine at various depths and the importance of pump efficiency on total distribution costs is discussed.

Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

Mt. Newman Mining Company Pty. Ltd.3 oper ates the Mt. Whaleback iron ore mine in the Ham- ersley Iron Ore Province of Western Australia. The present rate of production of high grade hematite iron ore is 33 million tonnes per year. Mining is by open cut quarrying,with 15m high benches. The present quarry operations will be extended to a large oval pit to win over 1400 million tonnes of iron ore. The pit slopes will extend up to 500m in depth and the perimet- er of the slopes will exceed 15km. Sixty per- cent of the ore is below the water table, which presently lies 45m below the general plain level Dames & Moore, rock mechanics consultants designed the pit slopes during early mine devel- opment to ensure an economic and safe operation.

A study is presented of the theoretically possible initiation systems for outbursts and the subsequent propagation mechanism.Previous occurrences of outbursts and their correlation to the theoretical system are described. An estimation of the energy release from two energy sources, gas strain energy and rock/coal strain energy, is presented and the relative importance of each source in the severity of outbursts. Summary: The description of mechanisms of outbursting follows the examination of these phenomena at Collinsville in Bowen No. 2 mine and at Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater. Quantitative material contained in the paper refers to Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater. Clearly from the work carried out to date gas release has a major part to play in the out- bursting at both of these collieries. In the case of the December 1 1978 outburst at Leichhardt Colliery energy release estimates place gas strain energy release contributing eight times the energy of that from rock/coal strain energy. Even the normal outbursts at Leichhardt Colliery appear to show this trend. Estimates of energy released are for comparative purposes between gas and rock strain energy and the values obtained may be regarded as approximate.

Blast fragmentation can have a significant impact on the profitability of a mine. An optimum run of mine (ROM) size distribution is required to maximise the performance of downstream processes. If this fragmentation size distribution can be modelled and controlled, the operation will have made a significant advancement towards improving its performance. Blast fragmentation modelling is an important step in Mine to MillTM optimisation. It allows the estimation of blast fragmentation distributions for a number of different rock mass, blast geometry, and explosive parameters. These distributions can then be modelled in downstream mining and milling processes to determine the optimum blast design. When a blast hole is detonated rock breakage occurs in two different stress regions û compressive and tensile. In the first region, compressive stress waves form a æcrushed zoneÆ directly adjacent to the blast hole. The second region, termed the æcracked zoneÆ, occurs outside the crush one. The widely used Kuz-Ram model does not recognise these two blast regions. In the Kuz-Ram model the mean fragment size from the blast is approximated and is then used to estimate the remaining size distribution. Experience has shown that this model predicts the coarse end reasonably accurately, but it can significantly underestimate the amount of fines generated. As part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P483A Mine to MillTM project, the Two-Component Model (TCM) and Crush Zone Model (CZM), developed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), were compared and evaluated to measured ROM fragmentation distributions. An important criteria for this comparison was the variation of model results from measured ROM in the fine to intermediate section (1 mm to 100 mm) of the fragmentation curve. This region of the distribution is important for Mine to MillTM optimisation. The comparison of modelled and Split ROM fragmentation distributions has been conducted in harder ores (UCS greater than 80 MPa). Further work involves modelling softer ores. The comparisons will be continued with future site surveys to increase confidence in the comparison of the CZM and TCM to Split results. Stochastic fragmentation modelling will then be conducted to take into account variation of input parameters. A window of possible fragmentation distributions can be compared to those obtained by Split. Following this work, an improved fragmentation model will be developed in response to these findings.
