The Wannaway Deposit is a structurally modified komatiite-hosted nickel-sulfide deposit. Until recently, nickel sulfide accumulations surrounding the Widgiemooltha Dome had been studied with a focus on understanding volcanological aspects of komatiite flow regimes and nickel-sulfide accumulation. Although volcanological features can be observed at Wannaway they are overprinted by several generations of structures associated with multi-phase deformation of the Dome. On the mine scale, two significant deformational events can be distinguished that control ore distribution. The first deformational event is represented by the formation of a layer parallel foliation within the footwall metabasalt and boudinaging of the ore into two distinct orebodies (mega boudins) during a north-south compressional event. Evidence of a second compressional event (east-northeast-south-southwest) is defined by reverse > dextral thrust-folding of the ore zone. The latter deformational event focussed the sulfide ore into thrust front positions where folded ore sequences are mined with stope widths up to nine metres wide. Later stage compressional and extensional deformation phases are observed but have minor, localised effects on the geometry of the ore zone. Four orders of control on the geometry and distribution of ore are interpreted through a combination of primary and secondary features observed at Wannaway. Extending the structural aspects of the secondary overprint features into areas of potential mineralisation has not only defined targets for extensions to the Wannaway Deposit, but has also aided to delineate high grade mineralisation and aid mining decisions. Obtaining an understanding of the volcanological conditions of formation, and more importantly, the structural evolution of the Wannaway region has been an integral part in optimising production.

The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.

Surface oxidation of sulfide minerals, such as that found in the regions of a sulfide ore body near the water table, can have a significant impact upon flotation. This theme has been explored for Merensky ore type sulfides where an ore containing pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite was thermally oxidised and the role of potential remedies investigated. Back-scattered scanning electron microscope images are presented showing the oxidation layer which formed in the mineral surfaces. These oxidation layers were depleted in both sulfur and iron with incorporated oxygen. Flotation recovery rapidly decreased with increasing oxidation, particularly after 27 days and reached a plateau after 50 days. Up to 27 days, this effect could be partially overcome with higher collector additions. Oxidation had more impact upon the finer size fractions, particularly for pyrrhotite. For more heavily surface oxidised samples, ultrasonic treatment prior to collector conditioning was found to improve flotation recoveries. This treatment had the greatest effect upon chalcopyrite particles. Sulfidisation was successful in restoring the flotation recovery of the heavily oxidised sulfide minerals. Longer sulfidisation conditioning times were not conducive to good flotation recoveries of both oxidised pyrrhotite and pentlandite due to oxidation of the freshly formed sulfide surfaces. For maximum flotation recoveries of oxidised pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, different sulfidisation conditions are indicated. It appears likely that in a mineral processing operation treating oxidised Merensky type ores, two stages of sulfidisation employing different conditions would be required.

The mechanism of caving is of interest to the mining engineer only in areas where he is directly concerned. One area is surface subsidence which is outside the scope of this paper. Another area is at the face where coal is being extracted and where control of caving is of vital importance. Coal mining systems have been developed with many considerations in mind, but in this list of considerations, strata control has seldom been given much importance. Research is in progress in Australia to endeavour to determine an optimum sequence for coal extraction underground. As information becomes avail- able from this work it is hoped that appropriate methods of controlling caving in various strata conditions will be devised. When this is done, equipment may be introduced to permit the mining operation to proceed under optimum conditions for strata control, rather than devising a mining procedure to suit the equipment available and methods developed for other reasons.

A series of laboratory flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various depressants as arsenic (and zinc) depressants in the lead cleaner stage of the NBHC mill at Broken Hill. The depressants used included potassium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, sodium hypochlorite, potassium ferricyanide and two Cyanamid commerical depressants, Aerodepressants 610 and 633. A standard roughing stage was completed before the addition of the reagents in the cleaning stage. All reagents tested produced significant arsenic depression, with the best results being obtained with the addition of potassium cyanide and sodium hypochlorite. Some of the depressants activated the zinc in the process of arsenic depression. The best result was obtained with the addition of 90 g/t potassium cyanide at a pH of 10 when arsenic recovery was only 1/4 that of the value obtained for the standard test.

The flame front is a narrow region in the iron ore sintering bed where coke particles combust. The maximum flame front temperature is as high as 1400°C. At high temperatures, the sinter mix components react to form melts, which facilitates material coalescence and the formation of dense sinter particles. It is well-established that flame front speed is an important factor influencing sinter productivity, sinter quality and fuel rate. In this work, the effect of suction, coke addition and mix moisture on flame front speed was studied in a pilot-scale sinter pot and also using the outputs of a recently developed theoretical model, which takes into account most of the significant physicochemical processes in sintering. Airflow through the bed has a large influence on flame front speed. A power law relationship between these two parameters means that increasing sintering airflow rate will lead to increased flame front speed, but the increases become smaller at higher airflow rates. Sinter pot test results showed that increasing coke addition decreased green bed permeability and increased flame front temperature, which resulted in increased flame front resistance and decreased flame front speed. Studies also showed that green bed properties are sensitive to sinter mix moisture level. SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

Brunswick Mine is one of the largest underground zinc/lead mines in Canada, producing 3.4 million tones of ore annually. As mining activities advance to deeper levels, ground pressure also becomes greater. To cope with the highly stressed ground, the mine has taken some strategic measures to ensure the targeted production level. Such measures include the implementation of a pastefill system and transferring the mining method from primary/secondary stoping to pillarless pyramid stoping. With the pillarless mining method, stope sizes become smaller and the number of active stopes is also less than before. In addition, mining sequence and cycle time have to be strictly followed according to production schedule. The blasting project described in this paper tackles one of the steps in the mining cycle aimed at shortening the blasting cycle time in a stope. Furthermore, this project was conducted and managed with the Six Sigma initiative in Noranda which was implemented in the fall of 1999. Like a typical process review, the blasting operation was examined by breaking it down into many steps that can be quantified and measured. Each activity was then correlated with different factors associated with blast design as well as blast operations underground. It was found that the utilisation of voids plays a key role in the blasting cycle time. With improved void utilisation ratio, blasting cycle time has been reduced from an average of 12 shifts to ten shifts per stope. This improvement translates into approximately 180 000 tonnes of ore being blasted without any increase in manpower. This paper presents the technical aspects of the study, as well as some operational issues and improvements made during the project.

The reasons for choosing autogenous grinding for the new Warrego concentrator of Peko Mines N.L. are discussed and the ores to be treated in the concentrator are described. The mill was designed on the basis of pilot tests carried out at Cobar and the performance of the mill has been most satisfactory both in its metallurgical and mechanical aspects. An empirical technique has been developed to predict mill performance for change in feed rate or feed size and a mathematical model of the mill is being developed for simulation and control work. The weight and size distribution of the mill load was determined at one set of operating conditions for use in the mill model.

The requirements for the controllability of metallurgical processes are increasingly becoming the focus of both industry and research. Advances in this field of research not only impact the stability of processes but often also influence the quality of the final product. One important way to examine processes in-depth, and thus show potential for improvement, is to describe them using physicsdriven models. In metallurgy, thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions of interactions between individual components of a system are often used to describe and analyse important metallurgical phenomena across the entire process. However, for the creation of physics-based models, boundary conditions and process variables must be implemented to enable a description that is as realistic as possible. The collection and generalisation of boundary conditions and process variables is, therefore, an important step towards functional models. The focus of this study is the determination of mass transfer coefficients between all components in a steel/slag/refractory system. For this purpose, experimental and theoretical methods are applied. Laboratory scale experiments are carried out in an induction furnace, and the mass transfer coefficients of the defined steel/slag/refractory system are calculated from changes in the chemical composition of the various components. Additionally, a calculation of the mass transfer coefficients based on dimensionless quantities is carried out. By comparing the values of the mass transfer coefficients determined theoretically and those determined experimentally in the trials, the suitability of the calculation is examined. The collection of mass transfer coefficients provides essential findings for future kinetic descriptions of inclusion modification based on the effective equilibrium reaction zone (EERZ) approach.

Structural mapping of pit walls can be performed using digital images and photogrammetry software, but the performance is limited by weather and environmental conditions including dust, rain and light. On the other hand, active sensors such as terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and total stations (TS) suffer from vertical orientation bias and occlusions when persistent discontinuities dip at the same angle as the scanner line-ofsight. The recent development of the compact light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems has made it possible to mount these sensors on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones which offer the potential to overcome limitations that are inherent in existing mapping systems. This study details the research involving integration and application of an advanced UAV-LiDAR system for structural mapping of a highwall. A state-of-the art laser scanner with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and real-time kinematic global positioning system (GPS) was integrated on to a UAV. The system was first tested in a laboratory condition. Then the UAV-LiDAR system was employed to map a highwall of a coal mine. The planned flight trajectories tested the system at variable distances from the highwall face and at various speeds. The raw data collected from individual sensors were fused, filtered to remove noise, and segmented to produce a surface scan model. Finally, the point density and surface coverage were measured using the surface scan model of the highwall. The parameters were compared with equivalent measurements computed from a reference TLS data. The study demonstrates the capabilities of a UAV-LiDAR system to generate accurate and occlusion free data for mapping highwall geological structure with very quick and efficient flights in the field. Despite nearly a half-century of continuous production, the low-grade iron ore (taconite) deposits of North America remain economically competitive sources of raw materials for the domestic steel industry. The continued viability of these mature integrated mining-concentrationagglomeration complexes requires highly efficient utilisation of assets, especially the mineral resource. At Cleveland-CliffsÆ five North American managed operations, enhanced ore characterisation techniques are playing a critical role in their continued success. Due to the low-grade nature and complex mineralogical composition of these deposits, ore characterisation cannot solely rely on assay grades. Historically, taconite ore characterisation has augmented assay grades with bench-scale concentration tests to quantify recoverable mineral. The economic necessity for improvements in mill efficiencies and final product quality has mandated significantly greater knowledge of ore-related impacts. Cliffs Technology Center has met this challenge by developing a variety of novel iron ore characterisation techniques. The applications developed include both in situ and laboratory procedures, plus unconventional data integration methods uniquely suited for these deposits. This paper details the evolution of these novel ore characterisation techniques and their application to each phase of the operation: mining-concentrating-and pelletising. The improved ore characterisation techniques have contributed to successes at individual Cleveland-Cliffs managed operations including mineral recoveries exceeding 95 per cent and productivity increases exceeding ten per cent while consistently achieving customer product quality objectives.

The settlement and drainage behaviour of co-mix, or mixtures of waste rock and tailings, are examined in a column study. Three co-mix profiles were observed for settlement, drainage, and pore water pressure response. A fourth profile with waste rock and no tailings was also observed for settlement. Co-mix consolidated faster than predictions for tailings alone, and maintained a saturated void space relative to waste rock alone. Practical benefits of co-mix as a waste disposal technology may include faster time to consolidation than tailings, a reduction in total settlement of placed material compared to tailings alone, and a reduction in acid drainage by limiting the flow of water and oxygen through maintenance of a saturated void space.

Water is a defining feature of the Pilbara. Its management was and remains vital for the pastoral industry which European settlers established when they first came to the Pilbara, and for the mining industry which now dominates economic activity in the Pilbara. Water availability in the Pilbara is, however, problematic. Severe droughts and major floods can occur at close intervals. In response to this uncertainty, the Department of Water undertook a Prefeasibility Study to determine, at a high level, the water requirements and opportunities in the Pilbara region. This paper reports on the outcomes of this study and the water integration opportunities in the region, identifying the sources of water supply and offers possible options for managing this water sustainably for the present and future demand. A range of supply opportunities is reviewed including: dewatering from mining operations, surface water, and desalination. All opportunities were subject to order of magnitude costing, including capital, whole of life and retail unit pricing with preferred options receiving further interrogation through triple bottom line (TBL) analysis to prioritise solutions. Options were also subject to intangible quantification (IQ) including benefits from the reduction of carbon emissions to ensure that the preferred option is based on factors other than just the least cost. Demand analysis was undertaken to identify current and future requirements and were assessed through review and integration of regional and sub regional master plans and consultation with mining, agriculture, industry and the community. The paper concludes that the viability of a Pilbara integrated water supply scheme depends on the development of a financial mechanism involving both government and industry participation models. The agreed scheme formed the basis of a submission to Infrastructure Australia for funding assistance.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

Solids suspension is important in the design and operation of mechanical flotation cells, and is a necessary precondition to particle collection. Most of the fundamental hydrodynamic research that incorporates some aspect of solids suspension was done by Arbiter, Harris, and co-workers, or Schubert and co-workers. However, a need for research into solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells exists, since very little has been done since the late 1980s; a time that also coincides with the advent of round mechanical flotation cells and the subsequent dramatic increases in maximum flotation cell sizes. In this work, concentration profiles and critical impeller speeds, Njs, were measured in a 0.124 m3, round cell fitted with a 0.150 m, Bateman impeller mechanism. Two solids size fractions (75 - 106 and 150 - 250 ¦m) were tested, in ungassed and gassed conditions (JG = 0, 1 cm/s) and at various impeller speeds (300 - 900 rpm). The effectiveness of solids suspension was quantified in three ways in terms of extent of off-bottom solids suspension, suspension height (extent of solids distribution), and variation within the solids distribution, which together present a complete quantitative picture of solids suspension and distribution within the cell. Consistent trends were found when these effectiveness criteria were considered against relative impeller speed, in terms of percentage of critical impeller speed, N/Njs. Off-bottom solids suspension is complete at or above 100 per cent of Njs, with significant sedimentation occurring as the impeller speed drops below 60 per cent of Njs. Suspension heights consistently reached a level equivalent to 90 per cent of the tank diameter at the critical impeller speed, and dropped off significantly as N/Njs dropped below 60 per cent. The variation in the solids concentrations within the sampled profiles showed consistent trends in two-phase but not under three-phase conditions. The paper concludes that the critical impeller speed, Njs, commonly used in the design and operation of standard stirred tanks, is a very useful solids suspension benchmark for describing all aspects of solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells and should be correlated to system conditions.

The demand for iron ore has increased significantly in recent years, with new iron ore sources being mined to meet this demand. As the composition of sinter blends changes with the availability and cost of iron ore, so too does interest in the impact of new ore types on granulation and ultimately productivity. This paper describes a study into granulating characteristics of seven iron ore types, including various hematite and goethite ores. The effect of ore type on feed moisture requirements, green bed permeability, green bed strength and granule size distribution was examined for single ore blends containing coke, flux and returns. The ore size distribution was varied in these blends and its effect on granulating characteristics examined. It was found that the optimum moisture requirement of the ore was more dependent on ore type than ore size distribution, but ore size distribution (and specifically intermediate particle loading) had a greater effect on green bed permeability. The saturation moisture value for an ore was found useful in predicting both optimum granulation moisture and green bed permeability.

Sasol Roche Blasting Services (SRBS) has undertaken a process of trialing and evaluating the use of the SMI electronic initiating system with the specific purpose of being able to fully quantify the benefits of the system over a pyrotechnic system. After an initial trial of three shots in mid-2001, it was decided that to fully quantify the system, a complete strip would need to be fired using the system so that any losses due to ramps or end walls would be the same for both scenarios. The results have shown a significant improvement over the use of pyrotechnic initiators in several key areas including percentage cast. Through the use of survey results, the increase in cast and subsequent net improvement in blasting has been quantified. These trials have set out to compare each system in comparable situations to determine the real benefits, if any, of the electronic system over the pyrotechnic one. As the percentage cast is relatively easy to quantify using modern survey techniques, it was decided that this would be the principle method of comparison. However, while the assessment only included survey results, any improvement in fragmentation size and consistency would have flow on effects on reduced running and maintenance costs.

The history of potential large scale development at Stawell in northwestern Victoria dates back to 1914, when Great Boulder Mines Limited, of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, took up options on some of the major mines in the Stawell Goldfield. Despite this and other attempts by various groups over the next thirty years, mining activity on the field gradually dwindled to the retreatment of old mill tailings.A static price for gold and indifferent drilling results prevented a major effort towards reopening the field until the late 1970's. A renewed exploration effort led to the discovery of sufficient reserves to justify installation of a carbon-in-leach gold treatment plant.
