A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.Low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation at Ridge Mountain occurs within the Oligocene to Miocene volcanic rocks comprising andesite, porphyritic dacite and diatreme breccia. A diatreme breccia complex with a NE–SW elongated orientation covers an area of 3.0 × 1.7 km. Four main stages of mineralisation were identified, comprising: E–W- to NW–SE-trending quartz-chalcedony veins with disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold. N–S- to NNE–SSW-trending breccia veins with quartz matrix and disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. NE–SW-trending quartz and calcite veins with disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. ESE–WNW- to ENE–WSW-trending quartz veins with disseminated pyrite. This stage is only mineralisation that is hosted by diatreme breccia and clearly postdates.Quartz veins of the first, third and fourth stage are less than 2 m wide. Only breccia veins of the second stage are up to 10 m wide. Gold is present in all stages as microscopic inclusions in quartz and sporadically in pyrite. Macroscopic gold can be seen in the first and second mineralisation stages. An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

Misiman society is matrilineal and despite relatively long contact with Europeans and mining, it retains its traditional consensus style of decision making. Many Misimans at least understand English, and this has encouraged comfortable communication between the people and the company (Misima Mines Pty Limited). Company care in monitoring the environment (mostly using Misiman staff), its policy of maintaining a largely Misiman workforce, and its emphasis on training and safety, have all created an environment compatible with Misiman society. In addition, the company has constructed and/or upgraded community facilities such as the airstrip, roads, the health centre, police station and schools, and has actively promoted local business endeavours. All these initiatives have been accomplished by constant dialogue with the largely Misiman workforce, and with the Misiman people, both before and during implementation. Constant, careful communication, using traditional Misiman consensus methods, appears to be the key to continued community acceptance of the project.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

For stockpile design, the flowability and structural interfaces are critically dependant on the stress conditions throughout the pile. Historically, the predictive methodologies for stress determination have been too conservative, which adds inefficiency to the stockpile reclaim interface selections, especially for live reclaim stockpile systems. In addition, accurate pressure profiling throughout stockpile is essential to correctly design the stockpile support structures, which are buried within the stockpile. Such buried structures include trestle legs or columns to support load-out conveyors or the roof of bulk storage sheds. Improved methodologies with respect to the development of the hoop stress condition which exists in material ædrawn-downÆ within the stockpile has been developed. This hoop stress approach has significantly improved the live capacity prediction to over 90 per cent accuracy and improved rathole structure prediction within live reclaim stockpiles. Additionally the methodologies in estimating the vertical and circumferential stress variation acting on buried stockpile structures have been significantly progressed, with experimental testing shown good agreement with the theory.CITATION:Williams, K C, Roberts, A W and Prigge, J D, 2013. A President, soon after he is appointed, sees looming ahead of him the Presidential Address; and in something approaching despair wonders what he can possibly talk about which might hold the interest of his audience. After various casts about, it occurred to me that perhaps prospecting, and more particularly prospecting in Australia, might provide a subject. This is because, 'in the first place, 'prospecting is passing from the stage of chance surface discovery to that of systematic search applying scientific methods to theproblems involved, and in the second, it is the section of the industry with which I have been concerned through much of my: working life. As it makes an address of this sort more interesting if it includes specific reference to actual experience, I hope you will bear with me in such references to actual prospecting as I may use to illustrate the argument. Prospecting has always carried the glamour of sudden wealth. The picture of the prospector engaged, perhaps for years, in fruitless search suddenly coming on riches beyondhis hopes is, deeply etched in the Australian imagination. In few other places has the fervour of prospecting run higher than it did in Victoria in the generation beginning little more than a century ago following the discovery of gold.People arrived from overseas in great numbers. Most of them proceeded to: the goldfields. They moved in thousands from new find to new find. In 'so doing' they determined much of the course of the State's development. The experience of prospectors led them to formulate all sorts of theories little impeded by awkward facts, to account for the apparently unpredictable occurrence of gold.The ideas which men followed, occasionally to success, and which they were prepared to back with all they had were strange and, various, many stories are told of them.

With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. "Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.

Results are reported of a study of the reactions occurringin the combustion of chaIcopyrite particles underconditions simulating those in the shaft of a flashsmelter.The reactions were studied using kinetic and mineralogicaltechniques. Reactions. rates above 500°C wererapid, most of the reaction taking place in less than 50ms. Final products were copper-iron ferrites with spineltype structures. Probable reaction mechanisms are discussed.

The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

A massive cobalt-containing pyrite orebody occurs in banded albite-quartz-biotite rocks at Thackaringa, some 30 km SW of Broken Hill. Because of the world-wide shortage of cobalt during the late 1970s, serious consideration was given to the development of a suitable flow-sheet to recover the cobalt from this ore. Details of a pressure leaching process in which more than 90 per cent of the cobalt is extracted from a pyrite concentrate are presented.

Geotechnical input is interwoven into the mining process at George Fisher South Mine from the planning and design of working areas to the closure of worked out areas and maintenance of life of mine and long term excavations. The methodology used consists of a mixture of application of established theoretical principles and guidelines derived from successful historical experience. In the development stage, including long term infrastructure excavations, the process takes into account the expected life of the excavation, usage and expected stress changes during its life span. On the stoping stage, the design process takes into account the local rock mass conditions, geological structure setting and previous experience in a particular orebody. Due to the high variation in age of currently used excavations, a rolling monitoring and risk assessment process for long term and life of mine excavations and infrastructure is maintained. This paper has as an output the process that must be followed to ensure an excavation on the highly dynamic mining environment at George Fisher South Mine is blasted and maintained in compliance with applicably commonly accepted safety and industry requirements.

A description is given of preliminary work done to identify the problems inherent in electrochemical oxidation of metal sulphides, and particularly in the use of powder compacts as anodes in electrolysis. Lead flotation concentrate pressed into a compact can serve as an anode for direct electrowinning of lead according to the reaction PbS -7 Pb2+ +So +2e. No pYrometallurgical step is required, and sulphur is recovered in elemental form.In the experimental work, electrical conductivity of the compacts was achieved by addition of 5·5 per cent of graphite. After compaction at 10-20 tons/sq. in. the anodes were strong and remained intact throughout the electro-oxidation period. Perchlorate electrolyte was used, but fluosilicate electrolyte is also applicable. A sheet of pure lead formed the starting cathode.As anode potential increased above 1·0 V (v. SHE) PbS04 was formed in increasing amount. At 0·90 V, Pb2+ extraction efficiency was 85 per cent. Anode potential was kept low by electrolysing at 60°C and 15 mA/sq. cm., and by improving the porosity of the compact. Other metal sulphides (Zn, Fe, Cu) in the flotation concentrate also oxidize and release metal ions to the electrolyte, which would need to be purified prior to deposition of lead.Power requirement in a laboratory cell was about 0·24 kWh per lb of lead extracted.

Stowing has been successfully used in many countries as a means of controlling surface subsidence, minimi ing incidences of spontaneous combustion, maintaining gate road stability and maximising coal recovery.Australian experience in stowing is limited but in the future increased extraction of thicker and/or multiple seams by longwall operations and resolution of conflict of alternative land u'ses may necessitate the use of stowing in coal mining. At present there is little incentive for mining companies to introduce and operate a stowing system because costs have to be borne by the individual companies and benefits spill over to society and the State. Cost sharing by the industry and State incentives may overcome the problem of cost disincentive.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

Stope back conditions in the cut-and-fill stopes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited often deteriorate to such an extent that, because conventional rockbolts are not able to maintain safe working conditions, square-set timber is installed. An attempt to eliminate this costly procedure has involved the use of long grouted rockbolts using high tensile prestressing wire. These bolts were developed in conjunction with the prestressing engineers of BBR (Aust.). This form of support has improved the back conditions, maintained safe working conditions, and delayed the introduction of timber in a number of stopes.Production from these stopes has been maintained at its previous level (at a rate approximately double that of a comparable timber stope).
