Mine operators are currently in a situation where market forces are acting to reduce profit margins and at the same time, regulatory bodies are insisting on improved mine safety and stability. This means that ground support must be made more cost efficient while maximising operator and equipment safety.A key aspect of ground support efficiency is the 'in the ground' performance. This paper discusses the factors that influence the way rock bolts and cable bolts perform. It highlights the need to know how support efficiency varies in different ground conditions.

The volumetric method of estimating hydrocarbon resources and recoverable reserves is and probably will remain a dominant method in petroleum engineering. The method is technically very simple, but has one main problem: how to express, measure and properly handle the variable and complex uncertainty of each estimate. The computer age brought in the Monte Carlo Simulation method which enables correct arithmetic operation using data with specified probability distribution. However, several problems are still not solved uniquely and still exist. For instance, the determination and description of the distribution of single parameters, the determination of the degree of dependency between parameters (e.g. hydrocarbon saturation-porosity), and standard probabilist- ic definition of generally used categories (e.g. proved, probable, possible). Methods for handling these problems are discussed.

The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited have recently commissioned a 14 Megawatt power station adjacent to its underground coal mining operation at Appin NSW. The power station is fuelled by methane gas extracted from the coal seams 500 metres below the surface. The methane is compressed and cooled prior to its injection into the combustor of a single shaft gas turbine. The turbine is coupled through a reduction gearbox to an alternator. There is sufficient power generated to cover colliery load, with any excess being exported to Prospect County Council, which is the supply authority for the south western region of Sydney.

The sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie goldfield have long been looked upon as' refractory, involving special metallurgical treatment. For many years two kinds of treatment have been practised-(l) wet treatment, including fine grinding, amalgamation or concentration of the free gold, concentration of the sulphide minerals with subsequent roasting and cyanidation, and cyanidation or bromo-cyanidation of the residue from the concentrating operation; (2) dry-crushing of the ore and roasting the whole of thecrushed ore, amalgamation of the gold in the calcine during fine grading, followed by cyanidation. The wet treatment was advanced a stage further when, in 1929, the Lake View and Star Ltd. adopted large scale flotation. As a consequence, however, further metallurgical problems were introduced. This paper covers the investigation, ,of one of the most prominent of these problems.Flotation preceded by strakes was satisfactory to a point.The flotation concentrate consisted largely of auriferous pyrite and tellurides, and the gangue minerals in the concentrate were practically barren.Several sources of loss of gold values were, however, found to be associated with this circuit, viz.-(a) There was the loss of gold in the flotation tailing.(b) Loss by dusting during roasting of the flotation concentrate.(c) Loss of gold in the cyanided residue.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The products of Lower Miocene calc- alkaline activity on the east coast of Northland, New Zealand are described and contrasted with coeval rocks of the northern North Island. These rocks, the Eastern Volcanic Belt (EVB), occur in four main centres aligned north-west to south east as either plutonic/hyabyssal bodies or as agglomeratic piles and dyke intrusions. Significantly the plutonic members always occur to the north-west of the volcanic members, probably indicative of differential uplift along faults (upthrown to the north) aligned perpendicular to the EVB. A full basalt-rhyolite (diorite-granodiorite/ adamellite) spectrum is represented, with a temporal progression towards the silica-rich endmembers indicated by cross-cutting field relationships. Modal mineralogy parallels this trend, consisting of two-pyroxene, hornblende, biotite, quartz/alkali feldspar modal assemblages, and with rare occurrences of olivine and garnet-bearing volcanic phases. Chemically the EVB is medium-K, calc-alkaline (with respect to AFM and total-Fe/MgO vs. Si02 indices) and quartz and hypersthene normative. The thirty two available K-Prisotope dates indicate that activity was largely confined to the Lower Miocene (24Ma-16Ma), with an apparent younging towards the south east. Initial B7Sr/e Sr ratios (0.70335- 0.70679) are indicative of a continental- arc-type setting, however it is unlikely that a straightforward tectonic reconstruction for this part, of the Pacific Margin is possible. Evidence from xenoliths, both petrologic and isotope, within EVB magmas and from regional geologic studies suggests that hypotheses pertaining to a volcanic arc sited over a subduction zone may hold little relevance in this case. The review concludes that the EVB developed from the partial melting of a geochemically evolved lower crust as indicated by xenolith evidence. This occurred in response to thickening initiated by a short-lived obductive event in the uppermost Oligocene, and controlled spatially by pre-existing basement structure. Intra-suite chemical and mineralogic variation reflects not only crustal variability, but localized differences in physico-chemical conditions best illustrated by the rare occurrences of olivine and garnet.

The aim with this paper is to discuss experiences from the ongoing research project ‘Attract: A roadmap to attractive, inclusive, and safe mining workplaces’. The project’s aim is to analyse possibilities, effects, and consequences of the green and digital transformation in the Swedish mining industry from workplace, socio-technical and gender equality perspectives. The research project (2022–2025) at Human Work Science at Luleå University of Technology is financed by the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation (a joint venture by the national research funds Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency). The project includes a multidisciplinary research group of five senior researchers and five PhDstudents and a broad repertoire of methods, eg literature reviews, qualitative interviews with both managers and workers, workplace observations, workshops, surveys, and project seminars where the researchers and the company representatives together analyse the results. One important part of the project is the applied approach where the researchers work together with two mining companies and one subcontractor company. The project has two parallel main subprojects.

Open pit mines in the Yilgam Craton have unique hydrogeological characteristics resulting from a combination of geology, mineralisation and the complex and extended development of the regolith. The principal features of this geological relationship are:ò deep and complex multi-stage development of the weathering profile; ò steeply dipping rock layering;ò supergene enrichment; andò mining across the regolith/rock interface.These features result in large changes in permeability horizontally across rock layers; vertically through the weathering profile and along-strike in association with mineralisation and the mineralised Structure.

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

The start up operations of Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie nickel smelter encountered troubles due to the high magnesia content of the concentrates. The flash smelter slags, with higher than normal magnesia content, had a much higher melting point than the normal low-magnesia, predominantly fayalite slags usually produced in nickel smelting. Investigations were made of the structures, melting points and viscosities of the Kalgoorlie smelter slags, as produced, and with additions of silica or lime.

The New Southern Railway (NSR) involves the excavation of approximately 10 km of single bore tunnel from Tempe Reserve, Tempe, to Prince Alfred Park (PAP). PAP is located just south of Central Railway Station in SydneyÆs Central Business District (CBD). From Tempe Reserve the alignment takes the tunnel under Sydney Airport including the main north/south runway. Sydney Airport is approximately 8 km south of the CBD. The NSR is being constructed by a private group, the Transfield Bouygues Joint Venture (TBJV). Transfield is a major Australian contractor and the French contractor, Bouygues, is providing the soft ground tunnel construction expertise and is also responsible for the design of the concrete segmental lining. This paper sets out to present in some detail the issues involved in tunnelling under the airport and in particular under the north apron, the main north/south runway and the new elevated roadway. The paper concentrates on these three areas on the airport with an emphasis on the following. The risks involved and measures taken to minimise the risks in tunnelling under the International Terminal north apron (with Jumbo Jets parked immediately above). Secondly, settlement predictions, settlement and runway operation criteria and the actual settlements that have occurred on the main north/south runway. Finally, the criteria that was developed during the construction of the deep bored piers for the elevated roadway at the Domestic Terminal as the TBM passed through this area of construction activity.

The existence of Gabal El Kahfa ring complex, located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, has been ascertained from aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric survey data as well as by aerial photography. Two maps for -the net aerial radiometric measurements reduced to ground level and aerial magnetic data corrected for the regional normal gradient of the earth's magnetic field have been constructed. The aeroradioactivity data have been interpreted geologically and analyzed statistically to outline various radiometric units and compute their charac- teristic statistics. The ring complex showed a circular radiometric feature and yielded a radiometric mean background and a standard deviation of 6.48 and 0.89 pR/h respectively. Besides, the observations showed a normal distribution. The aeromagnetic data have been reduced to the north magnetic pole, then filtered to produce the regional-and residual-component maps. Statistical trend analysis was conducted for the tectonic linea- ments resulting from the three magnetic maps, to define the structural framework of the area under study. This statistical study proved the exis- tence of trends in the east-west, northwest-south- east, northeast-southwest and north-south directions. The ring complex is characterized by a circular magnetic feature, whose average relief is 2150 nT. It is included within a high east-west trending magnetic zone. The latter represents a deep-seated uplift or anticline which is bordered from all sides by some faults of different trends.

Cyanide has been used for over a century worldwide for gold extraction. However, the presence of several metals and metalloids in ore requires greater amount of cyanide for an efficient gold recovery due to their solubilisation in conjunction with gold. The extraction residues are discharged into tailing storage facilities (TSFs) and may cause bird mortality if there is exposure to cyanide-bearing wastewater exceeding the toxic threshold. The toxicity arises from free cyanide released from weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide complexes. The International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC) has deemed 50 mg/L of WAD cyanide released into TSFs to be safe for wildlife protection. However, this concentration is based on observations of an apparent lack of toxicity rather than a toxicological approach. The National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) identified in 2010 that there is a lack of toxicity data to properly assess the environmental significance of cyanide levels at gold mines. Lack of knowledge for the toxicity of free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes to wildlife led to consider alternative direct assessment techniques for designating safe levels. Whilst toxicity may be assessed by using young chickens with animal ethics approval, the traditional bioassay approach to assess cyanide toxicity is impractical for gold mine TSFs. Bioassays using algal species such as Euglena gracilis, a unicellular alga, are widely used for ecotoxicological studies. A unique feature is that the Euglena gracilis Z cell has plant-like while SMZ cell has animal-like characteristics. Waste rock dilution causes mill feed grade to be lower than mineral resource grade. In nickel mines relative grade decrease (dilution) may be tens of per cent because of irregular ore boundaries and weak wall rocks. Five per cent dilution costs millions of dollars annually in medium size underground mine. In Outokumpu Group selective bench and fill stoping, cable bolting/shotcrete-skin support and fast ore boundary definition (OMS-logg in-hole logging or sludge sampling) are the key tools in dilution control. Commitment of the whole organisation to keep dilution low is also needed. Dilution sources and effects are discussed with examples of the dilution control methods applied in Outokumpu mines.
