PART 1The quantity of dust present and the methods used for suppression of dust in metalliferous mines has, in recent years, received considerable attention from mining engmeers in various parts of the world. Shortly after the publication of the General Report of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, in 1916, the officers of the Broken Hill South Limited started investigations into the conditions of the dustiness of the air in the underground workings. As the methods used are not generally known in Australia, the writers are of the opinion that the present is an opportune time to place them before members of the Institute. A large amount of the subject matter of this paper has been drawn from the 1916 and 1919 reports of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, the paper of Mr. Innes published in "The Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Mrica"; also various articles appearing in the Journal of Industrial Hygiene, and the American Journal of Public Health. A great deal of research work into the cause, prevention and estimation of mine dust has been made by the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee of South Africa, and officials of the United States Bureau of Mines. The writers considered it advisable to begin the investigation at the South Mine with apparatus and methods developed by the South African Committee.Through the Australian agent of the Cape Explosives Company, inquiries were made preliminary to procuring the necessary apparatus for the determination of dust, from South Africa. "Unconventional gas resources, including coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs, can be located above and below aquifers that provide groundwater for agricultural, industrial, urban and other uses. Development of these resources may, therefore, lead to potential impacts on groundwater supply.Management of reservoir/aquifer interconnections necessitates a program of focused data acquisition. For example, groundwater transfer from shallow aquifers to underlying CSG reservoirs may occur where CSG-containing units subcrop beneath shallow aquifers, possibly at significant distances from operating wells.Arrow Energy is undertaking studies of connectivity between aquifers including an investigation in collaboration with the Queensland Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment to evaluate connectivity between the Condamine Alluvium (CA) and CSG-containing Walloon Coal Measures (WCM).The Condamine Valley hosts highly productive agricultural land with groundwater resources heavily utilised for irrigation. Water demand outstrips available supply and groundwater has been subject to restrictions on further development since the early 1970s. Developments that could have an additional impact on groundwater resources in the CA are of major concern to local landholders. This paper describes: planned field investigations at two sites: 1. Stratheden, where pumping from the WCM will be undertaken 2. "Minerals, minerals, minerals. Elements occur in the earth as minerals. If local physical, chemical and structural conditions are conducive to concentrating these minerals to sufficiently high abundances in the earth’s crust, a mineral deposit will form. If technology is available to extract metals from the minerals economically, then you have a mineral resource that will be mined and processed. Determining which minerals are present and quantifying their abundances, textural characteristics (grain size and shape) and how they are intergrown with each other is the realm of the mineralogist. Geologists use this mineralogical data to understand how the mineral deposit formed, how to find high-grade zones within the deposit and where to find other mineral deposits. Metallurgists use this data to design, operate and optimise processing facilities to extract metals from the minerals. The types, quantity and precision/resolution of the mineralogical data required by geologists and metallurgists are different, but are not mutually exclusive of each other. Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database.

The ownership, management and employment structures operating in the Australian minerals industry have dynamically evolved during the last 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes, from an exploration and mining geology perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological expertise and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services.For all companies - big and small - two key issues resulting from these changes are the management of core geological intellectual property (IP) and competitive advantage. This is because there are less experienced geologists at exploration and mine sites, there are fewer head-office technical service teams to support mine sites, exploration teams are smaller with less specialists employed, and there is an ever-greater dependence on contract and consulting services.This paper reviews and explores these issues with an industry-wide geological context, then provides a case study of how Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) has dealt with these issues in exploration. Newcrest has grown from a one-mine company with an Australian exploration focus, to a large global company with multiple operations and an extensive international exploration portfolio. This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill, considering mainly the role and specifications of the fill used but including brief description of fill preparation and placement. Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and cesting campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. Results of a fill research programme conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented, involving both Portland cemented hydraulic fill and altei._acive, cheaper, additives for cementing hydraulic Fill.

This paper highlights strategies used at the Barrick operated Kibali Gold Mine (KGM) to improve the drilling accuracy and blasting effectiveness for longhole open stoping. The mine currently uses Solo DL421 for the required stope drilling and has experienced an average deviation of 10 per cent. Strategies are raised to eliminate or at least mitigate the adverse effects of blasthole deviation and the impact of blasting induced effect at the stope faces including the stope crown. The integration of deviation trends in the design would allow the actual blastholes to be established within their required positions to then facilitate a proper energy distribution with the eventual production blasting. The implementation of stope undercutting reduces the hole length from 35 m to 30 m which in return decreases blasthole deviation by 3 per cent. Another strategy adopted to improve the drilling accuracy is to slow down the penetration rate with the use of several operating approaches, including 135 MPa percussion pressure, 65 rev/sec rotation speed and 17 MPa feed pressure. To this penetration rate, a constant k factor is applied to increase the rate when the bedding inclination is less than 45° from the horizontal or when the hole length is under 10 m. This reduces deviation by a further 4 per cent. Where the rock mass is highly jointed it is advised to use the average penetration rate over the entire length of the hole. Furthermore, the paper shows the effect of deviation on the blasting results through a prediction of fragmentation blasting model optimised with reduced deviation and highlights the effect of presplit mining and timing delay on the blasting effectiveness. Although the size pattern increases with deviation, a strategy pertaining to timing delay with blasting would be to align to the work of Grant (1990) where the optimum hole to hole delay is found to be between 7–10 ms/m of spacing, while the optimum delay between adjacent ring varied between 110–160 ms. Stabilisation of crowns and wings will perform with the implementation of presplit blasting.

Following civil war in Sierra Leone, London Mining Plc obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. The Sierra Leone Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by a few companies since the 1930s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the preceding operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960s. There are two virgin ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings accumulated from previous operations. The Marampa tailings operation (Phase 1a) is being implemented first with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mt/a in a Phase 1b. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Further expansion (Phase 2) that includes the development of the virgin deposits is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production. Outotec partnered with London Mining to develop the magnetic separation flow sheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa tailings (haematite) material. The flow sheet development process started with sample characterisation and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flow sheet configuration, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, demonstrates the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit for iron ore tailings.

Most of the operating steelmaking capacity currently relies on conventional, coal-based steelmaking processes. Currently, direct reduced iron (DRI) is only produced in regions where energy is available at low cost. To align with net-zero emissions goals, steelmaking capacity must transition to loweremissions steelmaking technology. Direct reduction of iron ore will get one of the preferred methods in the future due to its high technology readiness. New reduction technologies include hydrogenbased direct reduction processes. To ensure optimal efficiency during DRI production and to cope with newly developed technologies, processes need to be monitored more frequently and accurate. Traditionally quality control of raw materials and DRI has relied on time consuming physical testing, wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of DRI that defines its properties is not frequently monitored. Process monitoring and quality control of DRI is possible by using modern X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. In addition to the metallic iron content (Femet), metallisation (Metn) and the total carbon content (Ctot), XRD analysis also identifies the overall mineralogical phase composition. This allows additional information about the reduction process and enables fast counteractions on changing raw material mixtures. The benefits of the quantitative determination of the phase composition and the calculation of process critical parameters to produce DRI will be demonstrated with a case study

The treatment of preg-robbing gold ores has always been a technical challenge in the gold industry. Early solutions included removal of preg-robbing carbonaceous material by flotation, the addition of kerosene to æblindÆ/passivate the surface of the preg-robbing component, and the most effective of all options, roasting the ore. Unfortunately gold ores have become more complex and roasting has environmental challenges, so other methods of treatment have had to be found. Volcanogenic massive basemetal sulphide and gold mineralisation of predominantly low sulphidation style has been located within Lower Tertiary basaltic and felsic volcanic and sedimentary sequences at Ufuo, in the Left April River area, northwest Papua New Guinea. The four discrete massive sulphide bodies, which have been so far identified, occur within a 3 +5 km area situated within a north west trending structural corridor. The sulphide bodies are all localised on the margins of the corridor where the bounding major through going faults are transected by regional faults. Mineralisation is characterised by massive pyrite-bornite-sphalerite-barite-quartz-anhydrite deposition with later galena-tennantite-chalcopyrite. Minor phases include enargite, goldfieldite and bismuth sulfosalts. Jasperoidal silica lenses and bioturbated sediments are closely associated with the massive sulphides. Basemetal sulphide mineralisation is also closely associated with phyllic-style quartz-sericite- altered host rocks underlying the massive sulphide lenses. This mineralised phyllic alteration is localised to fractures, veins and breccias that cross-cut propylitic style alteration characterised by quartz, epidote, chlorite, adularia and zeolite. The mineralised system possesses several hydrothermal features consistent with a copper-rich submarine exhalative volcanic hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) system, ie discrete massive sulphide bodies with abundant barite, associated jasperoidal silica and bioturbated sediments. However, exploratory drilling of the alteration zone underlying each of the massive sulphide bodies has not identified a well-defined zoned alteration pipe that is characteristic of such systems. The alteration is also similar to that of a porphyry-related low sulphidation system in which phyllic alteration has overprinted a regional propylitic style assemblage. The presence of sporadic enargite (and ?tennantite/tetrahedrite) suggest there were intermittent pulses of acid fluids in the system probably derived from exsolved magmatic SO2 which flowed directly to the surface along reactivated faults. The occurrence of tellurium and bismuth minerals is also consistent with a magmatic contribution to the metalliferous hydrothermal fluids. It is proposed that the VHMS orebodies are the products of submarine exhalative deposition generated by a crystallising magma emplaced within crust of on-going tectonism. Ufuo mineralisation is similar to many VHMS deposits elsewhere in that it is unclear whether the metals are derived from the magma directly, or via seawater leaching of the wallrock. Additional studies such as oxygen isotope analysis may assist in resolving this issue. If the metals are shown to be of direct magmatic origin then there may be good prospects for discovering economic-grade porphyry-related mineralisation at depth below the massive sulphide deposits.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulphides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralization. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphio column and mineralogy of the sediments.

The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.

Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. It is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5 Mt per annum. Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. These data form the basis for forecasting and on-going systems analysis which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions, visual grade estimates and draw point sampling are routinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Draw point recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Statistical variance controls are also employed to analyse mine and plant performance and guide actions.

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. Production scheduling of open pit mining is a key area as it deals with the management of operating cash flows of mining companies. The efficiency of long-term schedules is usually assessed with economic criteria such as net present value (NPV), discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) and payback period, which are not sufficient on their own for revealing the complex picture of the decision-making process.This paper offers a thorough analysis of the most important contemporary criteria of long-term production scheduling, as way to provide the mining practice with a new approach to the decision-making process. The list of criteria includes technological, economic and probabilistic ones. A detailed case study is provided aiming to illustrate the applicability of the criteria for comparing the scheduling approaches regarding the economic interests of a mineÆs owner and contractor. The results obtained can be used for revealing new trends in the current methodology of open-pit production scheduling optimisations.

This paper presents an assessment of the Robertson (2010a) method within the CPTu inversion parameter framework of Been et al. (1987), using CPTu calibration chamber data presented by Jefferies and Been (2015) and in other literature to assess the validity of the method, with particular focus on applicability of the method to TSFs (i.e. its applicability to loose silts and silty sands). The assessment demonstrates that although the method estimates values of k consistent with calibration chamber data, the method estimates values of m that are generally 1.5 to 2 times greater than calibration chamber data. As a result of this, the method generally overestimates Ψ for values of Ψ less than 0, and underestimates Ψ for values of Ψ greater than 0. This may result in both overly conservative assessment of materials as potentially liquefiable and unconservative predictions of material behaviour for loose materials.

It is predicted that underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin will have a significant rise in heat problems as mines aim to increase production, depth of extraction and length of longwall panels. At an actual Bowen Basin mine, extended longwall panels greater than 4 km in length are planned to be mined at depths with a virgin rock temperature (VRT) of more than 40¦C. Research has been completed into the reasons for the substantial increase in temperature at the face for underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin. An analysis into heat loads produced at the Bowen Basin mine for the development and production phases shows a significant amount of additional cooling will be required to ensure safe working temperatures. All of the major sources of heat, which included both natural and mine induced heating, were considered for the analysis. Maximum heat loads were assessed, together with peak intake surface temperature to determine the maximum cooling capacity required at a Bowen Basin mine. These maximum heat loads were assessed for a specific longwall panel, Longwall A, which extends to over 4.1 km in length and at a maximum depth of over 330 m, resulting in a VRT above 40¦C. The cooling system positional efficiency was analysed, determining that underground cooling via an indirect heat exchanger was preferred to increasing the capacity of the current bulk air cooling (BAC) on the surface. A preliminary cost analysis was also detailed which compared the cost of additional BAC compared to implementing underground cooling.CITATION:OÆConnor, T, Kizil, M S and Belle, B, 2013.
